War: By The Sword (Free for All) Art by Rayven Studios Rules:
Given that this is the first War on the new forums, I'll restate the rules for Wars here for convenience: - Each round, the Arbiter (me) assigns a challenge. Participants make a card trying to beat that challenge. The Arbiter then rates those cards and participants get Valor like normal.
- Functionally this will sometimes look like an attack on a location, in which case the challenge is to respond to that card.
- Other times, I might have an actual challenge and no card.
- For this War, whoever generates the most Valor before the end of the War (I anticipate 4 rounds, give or take 1) gets a Trophy.
- The Trophy for this war is the ability to Conjure from Signature Spellbook: Selem, featuring some revised versions of cards I've already made for BB, and some new ones. (I'll put it on planesculptors after the War)
Atlani will be participating narratively but not mechanically. Current Standing:
Lothaire 26
Cygari 25
Aelewin 25
Arandu 25
Doer 24
Anne 24
Argel 22 Cayli 21

A 50 minute march from the small town of Hocfeld lies a cold, barren field. The site of a recent battle whose soldiers have all since died, left, or both. Ruined flags and broken spears lie discarded in the snow, and arrows poke out of the ground where they’re not buried in bodies. The countless frozen corpses on this field wear one of two colors: the deep red of the Western Knight-General, or the light blues of the Northern Magus-General. Their chain mail has already begun to rust, and the bodies of the horses have been torn apart by wolves, crows, and whatever else stalks in the dark nights of the Arena. A warrior native to the Arena stands in the middle of the field, holding a finely crafted bastard sword made from obsidian and marble. Their shoulder-length hair billows in the wind, chain armor covered in bloodstains. “Well? I held up my end, brought you to this godsdamned field. What do you have for me?” You've done me quite a service, Xaja, and I promise you again, it will be my final request of you. And it is well past time for me to come through on my promises, no? I guarantee that you shall be known as a legendary fighter: one who fought both mortals, gods, and what may be in-between.
“That so? I don't see no riches, 'less you're plannin' to have me sell off the rust.”Don't you? I feel quite a bounty approaching. Though, thinking back on it, perhaps we have different tastes. Perhaps I should've specified it wouldn't be gold I'd be bringing you to. I, certainly, will be treasuring the ensuing battle.
"You dragged me halfway 'round the world just to go 'n' cheat me!?"The warrior looks around to figure out what battle Selem was referring to. Round 1: Xaja, Stonebender Eternal Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Haste Whenever ~ attacks, you may discard a card or sacrifice a Mountain. If you do, ~ deals 3 damage to any target. 5/3

Round 1: Xaja, Stonebender Eternal Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Haste Whenever ~ attacks, you may discard a card or sacrifice a Mountain. If you do, ~ deals 3 damage to any target. 5/3 "Such is their habit!" A voice calls from nearby. Turning to face it, one would see a knight in gleaming armor atop their steed, but for Selem, the light would bend, and reshape itself into familiar armaments: a coat, a cloak, some mismatched pieces of armor, and a belt bearing several swords, seemingly recently forged. The steed begins to advance at a walk across the now barren battlefield, as Syr Lothaire continues, "It was here that we first met, and that is the reason they have returned here, and dragged you with them. You are soon to be replaced!"
With one hand on the reins, and another on a sword but not yet drawing it, Lothaire stands on the brink of charging into battle, but waits for a moment longer. The Blacksmith Betrayed Legendary Creature — Human Artificer Flash When The Blacksmith Betrayed enters the battlefield, you may change the targets of target Aura spell, instant spell, sorcery spell, triggered ability, or activated ability. If the source of that ability is an Equipment on the battlefield, you gain control of it. 2/2
Turning Xaja's bolt back on her.
Xaja, Stonebender Eternal — This is on the fairly strong side, and the fact that it can target creatures and is an effective reach of 8 really worries me. Otherwise it's an elegant way of representing geomancy. 7/10

Round 1: Xaja, Stonebender Eternal Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Haste Whenever ~ attacks, you may discard a card or sacrifice a Mountain. If you do, ~ deals 3 damage to any target. 5/3 A big cat witth a big sword in his back approaches the field. He knows about the sword and has been following its trail for a few days after his conversation with the Tarkiran woman. His original plan had been to return it to her, for she was a friend of Michi, and a friend of Michi was his friend, but after recent developments... I meow be in need of another weapon meowself. The sword in his back dissapears, now a dagger in his paw. "I don't meown to replace you meow dear... Just to get you some company." As he gets closer to he center of the battlefield, he sees both the prized sword, its wielder and the fiery knight who was present in the battle against the creatures of the Elsewhere. "Thing just got really spicy." The cat hides between the corpses, as he makes his way towards the warriors, staying hidden for the time being. Patience is a virtue of the hunter. Sometimes it¡'s better to let them fight, and then reap the rewards.
Doer, Bounty Hunter Legendary Creature - Cat Assasin Whenever an opponent casts a spell, that player loses 3 life unless they discard a card or sacrifice a permanent. Whenever an opponent discards a card, draw a card. Whenever an opponent sacrifices a permanent, create a Treasure token. 5/4
Xaja, Stonebender Eternal: Yeah, maybe 8 damage on the attack on a 4-drop is a bit too much, but I like the concept and how it works kinda like a reverse Valakut. 7/10

Round 1: Xaja, Stonebender Eternal Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Haste Whenever ~ attacks, you may discard a card or sacrifice a Mountain. If you do, ~ deals 3 damage to any target. 5/3 Argel arrives, wiping off the dust from the hour long walk. Looking around, it was clear he was not the only one who showed. This was of no matter, his objective was clear and they were standing in the middle of the field shouting. "You again! Thought you got away, huh? Turned tail and fled? Think again! How many people have you stolen from and ran, huh?" As Argel shouts all this, he draws his sword, holding it to his side as it crackles to life with light electric blue sparks. Intimidating Ignition Instant Choose one — • Intimidating Ignition deals 3 damage to target creature. • Target creature can’t block this turn. Draw a card.
I don't think we technically rate you until the end of the whole War normally (probably because you won't always necessarily be making a card), but I'm going to do it for posterity since others seem to be anyhow. Xaja, Stonebender Eternal: 7/10. Very very strong. Just a 4 mana 5/3 haste is nothing to joke about, but one that makes 0 cost lightning bolts out of your lands, in hand or on field, to close the game out? Especially being as a 4 drop is probably the top of your curve anyhow in the aggressive deck that wants this. Maybe too strong. Really enjoy the concept though. Maybe a 4/3 or 3/3?

I thought Doer had gone to chase that monster without me, but no, it's just a silly little warrior and their silly little sword. I'm almost tempted to just sit back and watch." Cayli alights on a nearby banner with a flutter of wings. "Oh, look at you. You can barely even handle your own sword. What do you think you'll be without it?"
Dishearten Instant Target creature gets -3/-3 until end of turn. When it dies this turn, its controller loses 3 life. Xaja, Stonebender Eternal I love this card but it seems really really strong. Practically a better Glorybringer. Other people have basically already said everything there is to say. 7/10

A tumbleweed meanders along at the outskirts of the battle. Lothaire and Cayli may be able to pinpoint the peculiar presence, but for now the coyote hides itself away from everything else but the sword, for whom it makes itself very well known. The sword and the knight weren't quite like itself, but they were similar enough that this engagement was cause for scrutiny, particularly with the other attentions that had now been drawn here. Calm Before the Storm Enchantment When Calm Before the Storm leaves the battlefield, create a 4/4 Sand creature token that's green, blue, and red.
Whenever one or more creatures you control die, sacrifice Calm Before the Storm.
Mirage (You may cast this spell as though it had flash for its mirage cost. If you do, sacrifice it at the beginning of the next cleanup step.) Xaja, Stonebender Eternal - love the geomancy mechanic, the powerlevel is probably a touch over tho 7/10

They are uneasy, stripped of the power that ensured their strength in competitions martial, but remain confident in their skill. While he seemed to be displeased by the remnants of the battle around him, that had not prevented him from deciding to snack on some kind of fruit as he walked towards everyone else.
Arandu chewed thoughtfully at the tense encounter, a few familiar faces, though little rapport to rely on, and everyone else was a mystery of their own to him.
With a sigh, he finished his snack before his hand wrapped around a capsule hidden on his person, readying himself for what was no doubt about to be a melee."Trouble always seems to find you," he murmured to himself, notably not deciding to leave despite his disinterest in the fight itself.Ornery Packbeast Creature — Beast Trample When Ornery Packbeast enters the battlefield, create a Food token. Xaja, Stonebender Eternal: The potential for 8 damage out of the gate is quit intimidating, and the ability to sacrifice and discard makes stopping this ability a bit difficult aside from removing Xaja directly. 6/10, while interesting, potentially swingy.

Ratings: Blacksmith Betrayed: 7/10. From what I could find, red is supposed to have more limits on it when it does stuff like that (i.e. “...with a single target.”) (And Xaja’s they/them but I didn’t take points off for that) Doer, Bounty Hunter: 6/10. The p/t makes me think it’ll be attacking, but the text makes me think it’s being most useful staying out of combat; also feels like it should cost more or have a less useful body or both. Intimidating Ignition: 8/10. Very interesting compared to Jaya’s Greeting. Dishearten: 8/10. Sure Calm Before the Storm: 9/10. I like playing it for its Mirage cost, and while the death trigger is weird in Temur, I kinda like it, since you’d theoretically have enough creatures fighting for one of them to die. Or it's hybrid, so you just play it in red aggro. Spirit of War's Wake: 8/10. Ngl with the context of land destruction and discard from Xaja it took me a while to realize it fits best in mill, not that I took points off for that. Ornery Packbeast: 8/10. Made me look up the word Ornery
Deep in the wood, a lone warrior rides atop a galloping leopard, bow at the ready, arrow knocked. Ah, Syr Lothaire, how kind of you to join us.
Welcome back, Aelewin! It does seem that you are more shade than elf, this time, poor thing. Let’s see if we can’t get you fixed up after this, hm?
The dragonknight returns! How exciting. Between you and me, I think they’ve lost count. “You…” Xaja uttered, staring at Argel. How’d he… you! You brought ‘im ‘ere, didn’t you? You brought ‘em all here to kill me!!
Not all of them. I’ve never even met some of them. The cat’s new, and it’s been a solid few months since I’ve even seen a coyote.
Liar…
Why would I lie about- oh, well, yes, I did expect the dragonborn, the silhouette, and Lothaire to be here. Do keep in mind that the good syr can hear us. Though for all our uninvited guests, I believe we are missing one invited one. A shame.
Aelewin, Cygari, and Doer might notice a fourth figure crawling around the brush with them: A young woman whose blonde bangs poke out from the hood of her cloak. She looks around but fails to notice the animals or shade alongside her, though she does seem to notice the tumbleweed. Once she thinks herself hidden, she pulls out a notebook and a pencil, and begins drawing, glancing frequently between the fighter in the center and her rendition of them. Oh, I really really hope they all stay over there if they’re gonna fight.
All those nearby hear the voice in their head at the same time: Ladies, gentlemen, noble syrs… and various animals. We are gathered here today to celebrate the tragic soul before you. For you see, it has been ages since I’ve had a good fight, and ages more since I’ve been wielded by a planeswalker. I hope to kill two birds with the same proverbial well-sharpened stone. It is my intention that they who slays the bull shall receive its horn; to the victor goes strength, power, glory, riches, and millenia of wisdom.
Xaja tenses and looks nervously between Cayli, Lothaire, and Argel, not seeing Doer or Cygari yet. The woman in the brush freezes, so as not to catch their eye. Atlani, on the other hand, crashes through the underbrush, drawing her bow and aiming a black smoking arrow at Xaja. “I believe you have my sword.” She quickly realizes she is not the only one here, and lets her bowstring loose a small amount. “Argel, Aelewin, Syr Lothaire: I do not know what he may have told you, but I would be grateful for your help in getting him back to me. This offer extends to you, as well, Miss!" She shouts to Cayli, "I am Atlani Swiftblade, one of this blade’s former wielders.” Warkhan's Authority
Sorcery Create a 3/3 white Orc Warrior creature token, then each other player may create a 3/3 white Orc Warrior creature token. For each player that does, create an additional 3/3 white Orc Warrior creature token. Ah, there she is. “That’s it! I’m startin’ this gods damned fight before my odds get any worse!” Xaja impales the ground with the stone blade, driving it all the way up to the hilt into the ground, which causes tremors as though the field were a trampoline, and they had just landed after a high jump. Wrath of the Geomancer
Sorcery Wrath of the Geomancer deals damage to each creature and planeswalker equal to the number of lands you control. Round 2:(Do please clarify which of the options you’re going for, just so I don't misinterpret) - If you want to help reunite Atlani and Selem, make a card that protects your new 3/3 white Orc Warrior from Wrath of the Geomancer.
- If you think Xaja should hang on to Selem, at least until the situation develops further, make a card that synergizes with Wrath of the Geomancer.
- Otherwise, (such as if you want to take Selem for yourself) make a card that defends against Wrath of the Geomancer OR Warkhan’s Authority.
Bonus Points:Selem is a generous host: he’s more interested in the competition being close than in one fighter slaughtering the others. Each round I’ll give a bonus challenge for those in last to get bonus points to catch up. Lothaire and Doer, as the two in last, if your card(s) can defend a 1/1 blue Citizen in addition to whatever other option you choose, you will get 2 bonus points added to your ranking. (Not to valor cuz that could end up being more than 10/10 and I want to avoid that) Note that the narrative of your response is not required to interact with Yenna at all in order to get the points for this, and while narratively, Cygari and Aelewin should also have access to this, since they notice Yenna, they're already ahead and don't need the points.

Aelewin glowers, draws their blade, and lunges for Xaja, instinctively shifting into shadowform to dodge the wave of tremors, the quake passing right through them-Oh wait.Aelewin is sent spiralling by the wave of geomantic energy, still dreadfully unused to combat without their umbrakinetic abilities. The tremors send them sprawling on the floor, and for a tense moment, they are still. But shadows or not, Aelewin has a warrior's heart. They rise, shakily, and look to Atlani. Considering their options, they decide to make a stand. The elf dashes towards Atlani, glimmering blade flashing in the sunlight as they take a stand beside the warrior of the Mardu."Greetings, friend Atlani."
They hold their blade staunch, standing not in shade but in light, alongside their ally.Wrath of the Geomancer: Seems entirely reasonable. Good flavor. 9/10
Glimmer of Valor Instant When you cast this spell, any number of other players of your choice may copy it. Target creature gains indestructible until end of turn. You may gain life equal to its power. If you don't, draw a card. Casting Glimmer to protect the orc, giving a copy to Atlani and Yenna

Doer jumps from stone to stone as the tremors hit. The presence of Atlani changes everything. I knew she had show up, but it was almeowst hoping she wouldn´t. What should I do? The cat dodges some more stones, ending up just next to Atlani. I meown, she helped Michi. A debt is a debt. And using a meowgic sword that is not meow meowgic sword to fight meow battles feels... wrong. Doer unsheathes the Weapon, it turining into a curved sword much like Atlani's. "Morning meowstress! The Meowghty Doer at your service! Let's get your sword back, shall we?"
The Cats' Determination Sorcery For each player, choose friend or foe. Creatures each friend controls gain protection from the color of that player's choice until end of turn. Until end of turn, if a source would deal damage to a creature a foe controls, it deals double that damage to thar creature instead. "To protect all of our friends!" "And to bring swift, merciless death to all of our enemies!" Choosing friend for myself, Atlani, Yenna and anyone else who joins team Atlani to prevent the damage from Wrath by choosing red. Foe for everyone else to make sure that Wrath kills everything in its way.
Wrath of the Geomancer: Yeah, this is a good wrath. 8/10

Liar…

Even before the tremor is planted within the earth, Lothaire wheels slightly and charges for the brush. In a flash of light, rider and steed seem to snap forward, and in the same flash, the coat, cloak, and mismatched pieces of armour vanish from Lothaire, and reappear upon Yenna, freezing her in place until the gallant knight can sweep her into the saddle as they ride by, notebook in hand and all. When the light fades, the knight is in their usual shining armour, directing their steed to leap over Xaja's attack—Yenna is free to move now, though still radiantly armoured. For her, the battlefield seems brighter now, the beams of light from the clouds casting different shadows than she had seen just moments before.
Once the tremor is cleared, Lothaire calls out to Atlani, "Very well! Aim carefully now!" They ride to place Xaja between Atlani and themselves, and quietly add to Yenna, "Stay safe," before leaping from the saddle to bring a stabbing longsword down upon Xaja. Without its original rider, the steed now turns to carry Yenna away from the battle—though the reins still are tantalizingly within reach.
Steed of Light Enchantment — Aura Enchant creature When Steed of Light enters the battlefield, creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn. Enchanted creature gets +2/+0.
//Enchanting the Citizen token.
Lothaire is helping Atlani (option 1)—for now. Wrath of the Geomancer — This is basically just a red wrath, with rare exceptions; it can be difficult to take advantage of these exceptions, however, without fine control over the damage. Nothing too outlandish though, considering how many similar wipes red has gotten before. It's alright for representing geomancy still. This gets a neutral 8/10.

This was starting to become a full on skirmish, and anything could happen between the discordant combatants present here. He'd prefer not to take sides here, but that woman with the sword in the middle seemed determined to force the choice, and Arandu was nothing if not decisive.
Firstly, the tremors. While technically not capable of pure arcane spellcraft, Arandu did know how to theoretically prevent further activity in the ground beneath them, it had taken a few lessons from one his colleagues on Pacha Marka to learn the trick, but he'd devised a clever way with the minimal input of Q'ayrumi required. The minimal was, unfortunately, always at least a full capsule, and he'd eventually run out of ones he'd brought with him, and he'd hate to start having to scavenge from his working materials. A problem for later Arandu, present Arandu had other issues to deal with.
Pulling it from within his cloak, his hand was already alight as the material began to unfurl in his grip. Gritting his teeth, he rushed forward, attempting to keep his footing as he neared the geomancer trying to unfurl this entire battlefield, before he fell to his knees, a mixture of necessity and convenience from the seismic activity. Close enough, it would have to be. Already the capsule had been shaped into what appeared to be a crude dagger, which Arandu promptly stabbed into the ground and forced past the hilt, the glow from his hands already beginning to emit from below the soil. "Please don't panic," he said, to no one in particular, but loud enough that a few people might hear him over the sounds of combat, "this won't hurt anyone!" The tremors continued, but Xaja would find it quite difficult to pull any more material up from the ground, for good reason. Spreading from the point where Arandu had stabbed into the ground, notably he was now running away from that spot towards one of the fighters, Aelewin, it seemed, thick, fibrous vines began to tear up the ground, stabilizing the earth and preventing it from coming apart, the long strands of biopolymer and arcane will strong enough to hold the earth together even as Xaja tried to shake it apart, at the cost of making the whole middle section where she was standing a nightmare to traverse. "Hello Aelewin," Arandu quickly greeted, turning from the elf to face the likely enraged by his counterplan Xaja, "didn't expect to see you here, but neither did I expect anything else." Adverse Stability Instant Counter target spell. If that spell had mana value 4 or greater, draw a card. “Yes, the spell is quite solid. Allow me to show you how to exploit that.”
(Helping Atlani, though indirectly, it seems) Wrath of the Geomancer: Red counting lands is both interesting and scary, and this does scale up as the game goes on, compared to Anger of the Gods. I'd give it a 7/10 for balance concerns, but its a solid concept.

The coyote bounds across the peaks of geomantic waves, making small but eventual progress towards the sword. This engagement posed a curious set of problems. While the others did not seem interested in playing by the rules, Cygari still intended to.
The coyote slinks around Xaja, now visible to the geomancer. Where Xaja directs her strikes, dust devils will spin up, creating short-lived columns of spinning, burning sand.
Instant Target player chooses any number of lands they control. Each of those lands becomes a Desert, gains " : Add ," and loses all other abilities. Warkhan's Authority - these kind of cards are always rough. in 1v1 its gonna be one overpriced Orc unless somehow your opp can make it worse for your, and edh isn't gonna be a lot different, and then in 2hg its three super underpriced orcs. 7/10

As Xaja drives their sword into the ground and burning sand whips up into a frenzy, another figure emerged from the brush and charged towards Xaja, her black eyes primed on the geomancer. Then another warrior emerged from the same bush. And another. Soon an entire squadron of insect-eyed soldiers wielding spears and other weapons charged towards the geomancer, braving the sand and the quaking earth to face them in battle. One final warrior emerged from the brush and walked up to Atlani, drawing a jagged sword. She smiled."Ready, old friend?"Ancient Legion Creature - Skeleton Army

Well, I had wanted the sword for myself, but perhaps a powerful friend could be just as good, and I'd probably earn myself some bonus points with this Atlani helping get it back to them.Argel knew these tricks, and he knew how to avoid them. It was no limitless resource he was pulling from to do it, but it was a move he had practiced many times and felt almost second nature when in danger by this point. His knees bend slightly and the wind swirls around his feet as he bounds up and away from the ground attack. Its going to be best to stay back for now and see what the others do. Perhaps I can help them to wear the bandit down. I really can't hope to beat them in a fair fight, that last one wasn't going great and that was when I had a singular goal and no other people to worry about becoming collateral. Watch, and wait. Even if it is running my patience dry, I know its the correct thing to do."What's wrong, got your hands full? Why don't you try to piss fewer people off next time!"Inspire a Hero Instant Target creature gets indestructible until end of turn. If that creature has Level-up, you may activate Level-up at instant speed until end of turn. -card that protects my new 3/3 orc warrior from Wrath- Wrath of the Geomancer: 8/10. Fair enough. I think it could even get away with being 4 mana, but perhaps that is pushing it too far. Maybe it'd work out at 4 if it was just Mountains? Rating Wrath since it seems people are only rating one and thats the one I'm responding to the most?

Ah, good Syr Lothaire, you were right about one thing… Xaja slashes at Lothaire, trying to catch them by surprise. …I can do much better than that peasant girl.
Atlani, meanwhile, seems almost confused as allies upon allies spew out of the forest. “I’ll admit I was not expecting this much support, though I am no less grateful for it. I almost wish I had a speech. In lieu of that, let’s not keep Lothaire waiting for us.”She begins riding toward Lothaire and Xaja, trying to get closer for a better shot. Oh, boo. I see you've gotten some new toys of your own. But yes, let's get you off that cat, have some good old fashioned hand-to-hand. The most normal looking Xaja is the one beelining for Argel, lacking in purple crystals, adorned in stone plate instead of steel chain. Oh this is barely approaching a fair fight. I'm sure everyone here can handle themselves quite well. Go wild, dragonborn.
The final Xaja approaches Arandu, wielding two wooden poles, at either end a chain with a stone dagger at the other end. I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure. How many little tricks can possibly fit in that cloak, I wonder?Elsewhere, Yenna grabs the reins of Lothaire’s horse, driving it back toward the battle. She draws the hastily-made blade she brought with her, but waits awkwardly at the outskirts of the fight, and crouches down so that if it weren't for her radiant armor, without a second glance one might almost think the horse had no rider. I… I’m in no position to fight, but watching is almost literally the least I can do. Oh, the flower!
Yenna feels the back of her head to ensure the “hairpin” Arandu had given her was still there, and removed it to ensure it was still glowing with mana. Surely someone can make use of this, oh, but who’s in the right here? Definitely not Xaja, probably not Selem, and Lothaire... I guess they did give me the horse and armor, but they also made those spirits... Maybe they didn't know the spirits would attack me? No, they had to think it would happen. Eugh, and Atlani had him first, I think, but she's scary… gods, I can’t even do “enemy of my enemy” right yet. I’ll just… hang back.
After a few moments of indecision she leads the horse around behind the gathering, hoping to be able to sneak the flower to someone approachable and low on mana. Duplicate Defense Instant For each creature attacking you, create a token that’s a copy of it except it’s an Illusion in addition to its other types, it’s not legendary, and it has “if this becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it” and “at the beginning of the next end step, sacrifice this.” Bonus Points:Anne, Arandu and Cayli: +2 points (in ranking, not Valor) if you can kill multiple Xajas / Illusion tokens. Her siblings attempt to rush in to help, but Anne gestures them off with a panicked "RUN!". As she sits there in pain, Anne's body begins to harden and solidify, chitin plates and limbs beginning to emerge from her seemingly human self. After a few moments of struggling, Anne collapses to the ground, still. ...Then her body bursts forth like an explosion, splitting and growing alike as any resemblance to anything human is quickly replaced by arthropod visages. Multiple centipede-like heads rise up on myriad limbs as the sand begins to drastically heat, at some points melting into small pinpricks of molten glass. Their eyes turn to the geomancer clone, who quickly begins to burn or melt depending on its composition as they release gouts of flame from their many mouths. Countless combatants, all with their own quirks to deal with their specific target, including the one in front him. Though he wasn't exactly sure what the two polearms were supposed to be for, anything inconvenient about their use didn't exactly matter in a one on one encounter, which is exactly what he'd been set up for. "It's just a convenient way to hold the one trick, if I'm being honest," he admitted, already taking steps back away from his designated enemy, "it just so happens it has plenty of uses." His hand was already wrapped around yet another capsule, though his face betrayed an annoyance in his actions. Just how many of these had he used already in these struggles across the plane? At the going rate, he was going to be out of materials before the winter ended, and he'd planned to at least be self-sufficient off of what he had already. Arandu was going to have to make do with what he had available.
The polymer strands he'd seeded in the ground were still viable, though not for any complex he'd usually employ. But this battlefield was not the place to get creative, Arandu needed results, fast, as much as it irked him to be once again on the offensive. Reaching through the vines closer to him, he extended his empty hand forward, and the ground around the Xaja duplicate in front of him erupted as the polymer vines tore up through the ground then shattered, embedding countless shards into the stony duplicate in front of him, where they would burrow, settle, then expand into the surrounding material, enough to compromise the construction, and more than enough to cause it crumble if its master tried to move it further.
Duplicate Defense Instant For each creature attacking you, create a token that’s a copy of it except it’s an Illusion in addition to its other types, it’s not legendary, and it has “if this becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it” and “at the beginning of the next end step, sacrifice this.” The blade is pulled out of position by the knight-general's axe, though disappears from her hand in a flash of purple light, reappearing in the other, ready to slash down into the spirit at a hopefully unexpected angle.
As soon as Xaja disappears, Lothaire pivots into a defensive stance, pulling their longsword into a halfsworded overhead guard where it can counter the slash with a circular sweep. The knight adjusts their footing to account for Xaja's new position, then backs away slightly when they lose their opponent's position in the swirl of dust. Can you? Peasant or mercenary, you use the same predictable techniques. I may have been mistaken about your tale—perhaps you are the reason your wielder is so often slain!Once it's clear that Xaja intends to duel them, Lothaire shifts to a lower stance for their guard before lunging for a series of halfsworded stabs, hoping to use their superior reach and leverage to force their way past the opponent's guard. Should Xaja try the same teleportation trick again, Lothaire will punish the repetition by sidestepping and shifting back into an overhead counter as before, except this time followed by a wide slashing riposte from the shoulder. Elsewhere, Yenna grabs the reins of Lothaire’s horse, driving it back toward the battle. She draws the hastily-made blade she brought with her, but waits awkwardly at the outskirts of the fight, and crouches down so that if it weren't for her radiant armor, without a second glance one might almost think the horse had no rider.
Nervous as she may be, pride seems to infect Yenna at a touch of the reins. Perhaps she would be easier to miss on the steed hidden by the blinding radiance? Should she give a second glance to her own weapon, the blade may still be hastily made, but of no lesser quality for it, and seems to be a shining companion for both the armor and steed. Such is the strength of the Radiant Order's conjurations, and the people of this land.
Unseen Squire Enchantment Creature — Spirit Soldier Flash
Bestow Enchanted creature gets +1/+2.
1/2
This can be used to win what would otherwise be a marginal trade, or to fizzle an illusion and get a small creature out of it.
//Note: Had to replace a previous design since it broke character restrictions.
Duplicate Defense — I would have dismissed this as destroying all attacking creatures unless you have an instant speed response, but it's a bit more complicated than that; large toughness may be exempt, but then there's also multiple blocking. All in all, it's a fairly intricate form of anti-aggression that doesn't bend blue too much to do it, and seems to at least cost as much as a proper boardwipe. Perhaps it's too intricate though, seeing how many possibilities you'd have to calculate for more unusual uses of this. 8/10

Duplicate Defense Instant For each creature attacking you, create a token that’s a copy of it except it’s an Illusion in addition to its other types, it’s not legendary, and it has “if this becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it” and “at the beginning of the next end step, sacrifice this.” The Xaja nearest Cygari was now the Xaja nearest no one as the coyote vanished from its position.
Cygari reappeared sitting behind the crystal-eyed Xaja, now visible to anyone looking the right way, and hopefully, Lothaire. The red light streaking from the coyote's eyes faded away to black and it nodded its head to Lothaire. They awaited a response.
Weight of Power Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature Enchanted creature gets +5/+5. Enchanted creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step.
unlocking Mirage (the set) to conjure a playset of Meddle. if lothaire somehow figures out what Cygari is doing, Weight of Power is being cast at a token Xaja and Meddled a bunch to blow up more. otherwise it goes on the Squire (or whatever that's enchanting) Duplicate Defenses - would feel better if this had white or maybe black or red mixed in there since this can one-sided wrath with upside really easy for blue. 7/10

The vines sprawl up and the shards dig into the Xaja clone, tearing it apart as it tries to fight against them. So it does.

One of the clones thrusts forward with his spear, which quickly veers off course as Atlani bashes it with her shield. The other moves to follow up but is tackled by the leopard, who spares no time sharpening her claws on the crystal, and Atlani sinks her blade into the final Xaja. Her mind is quiet. The blade is pulled out of position by the knight-general's axe, though disappears from her hand in a flash of purple light, reappearing in the other, ready to slash down into the spirit at a hopefully unexpected angle.

However, that final attack would never connect, as the blade flew from Xaja’s grasp and landed in the snow nearby. “You… WORTHLESS STRAY” Doer succeeded in removing Selem from Xaja’s arm, but had to now contend with the other, as Xaja throws their arm, charged with the remnants of Selem’s power, striking towards Doer in an attempt to backhand and send him flying back across the field. Xaja’s eyes dim, returning to their normal shade of gray. Regaining awareness, Xaja looks around, seeing first the massive avatar of Hyxotl, then the glowing horse and armor, before noticing that Lothaire is focused on them, promptly backing away, and tripping, landing on their back. Their eyes show fear, though that fear shortly melts into peace. “Ha! Heheheh, heh… you want that sword so damn bad, go ahead and take it, I guess.”In the distance, Atlani remounts her beast and rides towards Selem, though the distance affords some time to those who might take him for themselves. She pauses a moment in her thoughts to notice the unusual amount of confidence, considering the situation. Is this…? No, I can worry about that later. “Ha! Heheheh, heh… you want that sword so damn bad, go ahead and take it, I guess.”In the distance, Atlani remounts her beast and rides towards Selem, though the distance affords some time to those who might take him for themselves. ... pacifistwestwoman It seemed the crux of the conflict was now at a tipping point, and this was the perfect time for Arandu to step in. "Is it necessary to continue this conflict," Arandu asked, raising his voice to the best of his ability so that those close and somewhat further away would hear him, "I do not deny the effort that has been put forth to conclude this in favor of yourselves, but I must question whether you still must act as if you cannot come to an agreement as to what comes next?" The planeswalker stepped closer towards the sword, though only to put himself at the center of everyone's attention, and not to (intentionally) appear as if he was going for it himself. "But if the reward of continuing to fight over a singular possession is only the possession itself, should we not interrogate the means we seek to claim it?" He looks over towards Yenna, a flash of recognition before he recomposed himself and return to addressing all who might hear him, "I will not attempt to deny whatever reasons you might seek to own this blade, it is clear your history with it goes to before my presence on this world, but as a participant in this bid to see it reclaimed or taken by another, it is my part to see it concluded." He looks to Doer, who though he recognizes as someone who attempted to pilfer from his encampment, at least appears to be guarding the blade rather than attempting to take it. "You come forward with illusion you have only two choices before you. Fight for this blade, or fight for someone who does. But I must ask if there is not another means resolve all of this? The conflict is done, the blade's challenge has been met. I acknowledge this sword is an object, and a person, of great interest to all present, but I must ask you all, please.."
"Can't we just talk this over?"Diplomatic Measures Instant — End the turn. During each player’s next turn, that player skips their combat step. "And before I forget," Arandu added, his eyes scanning around himself quickly before he finished, "I do still have control over the earth surrounding myself and a bit further out, so if you were curious as to how I might enforce such a negotiation, now you are aware."
Yenna, the Illuminator: 10/10, cute Auras/Equipments matters card.

The snow leopard Atlani was riding puts some distance between them after Atlani dismounts. The two Xajas facing Atlani move to flank her, though she backs away and moves to the side, preventing the effort. Are you spread thin, or do you not want to kill me? I have to think you’d have done it by now.Sometimes I like to have fun with it.I am not some mouse for you to trap in a corner. It disappoints me that you respect me so little. Why? I am millenia older than you. You wouldn’t respect an infant in a fight, would you?The Xajas poke and prod at Atlani with their spears, which are blocked by her shield and parried by her sword as the three of them continue moving away from the others. I would respect a former colleague. Especially one with such unfinished business.Unfinished business? Comparatively, I had been taking you on a field trip of the multiverse. There are so many planeswalkers here with such strong sparks. Some real fighting could get done. But will they help you?The two struck as one, more suddenly than Atlani had anticipated. She had hoped to block both with her shield, but the space between the spearheads lead her to block one, the other sliding off the edge of the shield and landing in her shoulder. Atlani winces, though otherwise seems not to mind. Their strength will draw His attention! Will it? You have been trying for centuries! They strike again, this time Atlani manages to dodge one spear and block the other. The snow leopard begins silently running up behind the spearmen And I will search for centuries more. Fighting. Growing. Evolving, until He takes notice and sees fit to retrieve Me. To wield Me once more. And I can offer you dragons to struggle against. Allegedly centuries old. What greater tale than killing ancient dragons? Come with me back to Tarkir.
Ohohoh… you should mind your tongue while you still have one.Xaja blocks Lothaire’s attacks with a combination of parries and dodges, with each parry leaving a glow at the point of contact on Selem. Once he felt he had accumulated enough of them, the glow began to spread itself thin across the blade, then onto Xaja, who began to parry and dodge faster and faster, eventually beginning a counteroffensive, which Lothaire could easily block at first, though after a point it was uncertain whether Xaja’s arms was simply teleporting around, as Lothaire simultaneously blocked a hit from the left, they saw, unprepared, one coming from the right- Without any joke or remark, the weapon switches to a long dagger, and the cat slashes at the geomancer's wrist, trying to disarm her.
Heheheh, heh… you want that sword so damn bad, go ahead and take it, I guess.”In the distance, Atlani remounts her beast and rides towards Selem, though the distance affords some time to those who might take him for themselves.
…Right. I can do this! I’ve got a magic horse, magic armor, a magic flower, and a… did Syr Lothaire enchant my sword? She pauses a moment in her thoughts to notice the unusual amount of confidence, considering the situation. Is this…? No, I can worry about that later. Yenna, wary of Lothaire and Xaja, and unfamiliar with Doer and Cygari, raises her sword as she approaches.
He looks over towards Yenna, a flash of recognition before he recomposed himself and return to addressing all who might hear him...
Sparks fly from Lothaire's gauntlets as they take hold of their longsword's blade with their other hand, in order to catch Selem on the hilt. Thanks to Doer's intervention, however, all the hilt meets is air. There is a moment of unnatural stillness in the Knight's movement, as though a record has skipped, while Doer makes their declaration, and Xaja concedes the battle. Doer, the hunter, the breaker of reality, the reveller of Rakdos, and the slayer of eternals. To think that such a presence would interfere now, of all situations, and to make such a choice. The Knight moves again, carrying their longsword as though bearing a standard in procession, with a glare cast toward Xaja as they pass the mercenary by—they allow the unarmed adversary to flee, but make no secret of their intention should the adversary not accept mercy. Arandu speaks now, with a plea for words rather than a decisive battle. Lothaire retorts, with a voice that effortlessly echoes across the field. "An outsider such as you could say little about how we should resolve our differences in this place—this is the Arena; we do not need your intervention to honourably settle this matter." Lothaire slowly walks toward Selem, but stops at a respectful distance away from Doer. "Still, I am surprised that this should be the choice one such as you makes. Doer, you know what evil that cursed blade has wrought; this very battle is the product of its schemes, yet you would still pass it to another. Perhaps we may put an end to its bloodied chain, and ensure no one should have it, for what remains of eternity." Lothaire makes no motion that they are about to attack, and waits for Doer's reply.
As Yenna draws closer, an idea takes root in her mind: she has the strength to take the sword for herself. Her original intention had been to decide who should have it, but what if she were the one most deserving of it? If she could find no one else who could be trusted, there could be no better option. For all the valour and virtue she has proven on this day, it would be a just reward.
Regalia of the Hero Eternal Legendary Enchantment — Aura Enchant creature
This spell can't be countered.
When Regalia of the Hero Eternal enters the battlefield, create Selem, a legendary Equipment colorless artifact token with "Equipped creature gets +4/+0 and has menace and trample" and equip . Enchanted creature gets +4/+0 and has vigilance and indestructible.
Lothaire still stands before Doer and the blade, but their lack of aggression will not dissuade them from moving to defend Yenna should anyone attack her. Would Arandu be willing to harm her?
Out of respect for the legendary warrior Doer, Lothaire chooses to live by the sword—but what will Yenna choose?
Yenna, the Illuminator — Lack of specificity on the discounting makes me worried about this developmentally. However, I appreciate the tech you're using for the keyword granting. 9/10(At the time of this post, Lothaire's max MV is 6)
