Probably more of a wreck than a push but that's what we're here for, right?

So I was gonna post a bump, but then I realized I'm the judge for this one: whoops. ZephyrPhantom | no render provided | Unstable Glade Land - Forest
(Tap: add a green) Unstable Glade enters the battlefield with a rift counter on it. (Whenever a permanent with a rift counter on is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, it does 1 damage to target opponent.) | A simple twist on a basic for land-reanimator deck. | ameisenmeister | | Coppercliff Academy Land
Tap: Add two blue. Spend this mana only to cast spells or activate abilities during another player's turn
FT: A flow of ideas rushes through this city of schools, and every little gem gets caught in the nets of its scholars | Counterspell.land. I'd call it a push since you can't fetch it and it forces you to play at instant speed or lose out on the mana tempo it gives you; that's not too much of a challenge for blue but there'd still be more occasions than not (in my estimation) when you'd want four mana on your turn compared to eight mana on your opponents (assuming you hit all four copies). |
I'm gonna give this one to ameisenmeister because the goal was to push a basic land, and Coppercliff Accademy feels more like an island than Unstable Glade feels like a forest.

Thanks for the win (and sorry for the late reply). Now it's on you to push Zephyr Spirit to the top!
Have fun!

Some of my choices probably hurt me, but I wanted to keep the same cost, rarity and power/toughness.

Zephyr Perserver a generic and a blue creature - spirit guardian
Flash When you cast Zephyr perserver during combat, target attacking creature does not untap during its controllers next untap step. Whenever Zephyr Perserver block, return it to its owner's hand.
FT: An especially dedicated spirit can indefinitely forestall any with hostile intent.

Judging time!
Well, this is probably not a common, seeing how much is going on there. The card all in all is fair, but I wonder whether withdraw is a real keyword or just a flavor word.
This looks like a pain to play against in limited. Which is why I'd really like to know which rarity it is. Assuming that it's an uncommon, the card is a nice streamlined version of Zephyr Spirit with a cohesive set of abilites.
That name... I see what you did there. Turning a weak card into some kind of global effect is a good way to push it and I like what your card's doing. It isn't obvious what players are supposed to do with it but with some thinking, the ideas start flowing. My immediate idea would be a deck with lots of etb effects on cheap creatures and unblockable creatures pushing in for damage. Now, if there'd be a way to put this card into a Stonebrow commander deck...
{And the winner is...} zephyrphantom with the card zephyr phantom! The card was just too clean and elegant to not get the win.
Thanks everyone for participating!

Thanks! For the next challenge, I wanted to pick Phasing or Mercenaries, but the former has gotten a lot of attention in recent times, so the latter it is. Your next challenge is to push ANY creature with the creature type Mercenary. Those familiar with Mercardian Masques will know that the set introduced two thematically opposed factions: Rebels and Mercenaries. One proved to be a very good and potentially busted strategy for the Standard for its time - the other was not. I'm expanding this to include the whole faction because much like Rebels, Mercenaries tried to have a series of interesting toolbox effects, one of which was the off-color (E.g. Seahunter as one of the potentially 'better' examples). Since this is a faction-themed challenge, you may make as many Mercenaries as you like as long as they're all based on existing designs. Good luck!

With the latest Mechanical Color Pie article stating that Black is secondary in rule-setting and casting off libraries, and tertiary in permanent stealing, I decided to push Rebel Informer towards something that can more directly compete against Rebels in the Mercadian Masques block—by bending Shadow of Doubt into an Aven Mindcensor effect and give it a conditional sort of Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter effect. After all, if you want to match the power level of the Rebels, why not play Rebels?
Rebel Informant Creature — Human Mercenary Rebel If a player would search a library, that player searches the top four cards of that library instead. : Target player reveals the top card of their library. If it's a Rebel card, you may cast that card this turn and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell. 1/2

Soldier of Misfortune (based on: Soldier of Fortune + Ob Nixilis, Unshackled). A black or a red Creature - Goblin Mercenary
Whenever an opponent shuffles their library, they loss 3 life. A red, a black, and tap: target player shuffles their library. 1/1
| Soldier of Fortune, fucking with blue's top of the library shenanigans and advancing the game state | Rebel Snitch (based on: Mercenary Informer) Two generic and a black Creature- Human Rebel Mercenary
Hexproof from white. Two generic and a black: Put target nontoken Rebel on the bottom of its owner’s library. 1/2 | Mercenary Informer just feels like an unfair advantage given to the rebels, so I added a faction swap. | Mercenary Cavalier (based on: Mercenary Knight) Three Black Creature - Human Mercenary Knight Horsemenship Mercenaries you control have horsemenship and get +1/+1 Whenever Mercenary Cavalier or another mercenary enters the battlefield, an opponent may discard a creature card. If they do, sacrifice that mercenary.
4/4 | Mercenary knight is a very lack-luster creature: a 4/4 for 3 with a downside? Nah. How about a 4/4 lord for 3 with a psuedo-downside. |

Cateran Overlord Creature--Horror Mercenary Lifelink Sacrifice a creature: Tap Cateran Overlord. It gains indestructible until end of turn. , : Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a Mercenary permanent card. You may pay life equal to that card’s mana value and put it onto the battlefield. If you don’t, you lose life equal to the number of cards revealed this way, then repeat this process, treating the last card revealed this way as though it wasn’t a Mercenary. 4/4
So, the idea of Cateran Overlord is a good one: something that can get pretty much any Merc from your library. The only problem is the execution: they were so focused on "Hey, Rebels go up, Mercenaries go down" that they either forgot, or never even realized, that they could make Mercs care about anything. Plus, the Overlord itself is costed right out of playability by all but the most dedicated of kitchen tablers.
I remembered one of the GDS multiple choice test questions talking about how 4/4s for four are the most impactful creatures in Limited, so that was Step 1. Step 2 was replacing regen with the currently-favored indestructible pseudo-regen; I originally had the lifelink included with that, but decided to just let it have lifelink naturally, to fully offset the last ability.
The last ability's wording was giving me fits until I hit upon the disregard Merc status clause. Just try to imagine how it would've been worded without that. I explored and abandoned at least four different wordings before the disregard Merc epiphany.
Now, you really can find any Merc you want, you just have to be willing to pay the cost.

Crown-Hunter Hireling Creature - Ogre Mercenary When Crown-Hunter Hireling enters the battlefield, you become the monarch. As long as Crown-Hunter Hireling attacks the monarch, creatures that player controls can’t block. 4/4 I didn't want to push it too far, so if you manage to remove this while its attacking, you can block again.

viriss - A super pushed engine but given the generally terrible quality of Mercenary cards they could use it. Interesting that you can activate as much as you want as long as you have mana and life. I think with the current state of Mercenaries this would be good enough to earn it a spot in lower tier Modern even if you have to wait a turn before it gets online. Nice that the ability cost prevents immediate Dark Ritual abuse. MonkeyChewToy - Nasty hoser, but given the prevalence of Rebels at the time, I think it'd be pretty justified and it helps the card to be a valid sideboard card outside of its intended use. An interesting revision of the card that lets it do more than just support or hose a tribal. hydraheadhunter - Solder of Misfortune - interesting way to turn it into a hoser for tutors/fetches/etc... I like it. Rebel Snitch - Man, informers were popular this round, huh? I guess I see the appeal, though to me it feels mostly the same as its source card. Mercenary Cavalier - Now this is a very interesting lord, threatening to turn a board state into a game winning situation at the cost of making it very difficult to do so. I think this would be an interesting jank option to try and make into a serious wincon, whether it would be just for 8rack, combined with Haakon, or just with cheap Mercenaries. sdfkjgh - This plus Phyrexian Unlife could make for some powerful combo stuff, which I like a lot because even if it wasn't intended it's a very useful angle for the card to have in older formats and its relatively high mana cost means that Legacy has better things to do, but this could still score wins out of nowhere. Otherwise a straightforward powerful mercenary engine like the Overlord was probably supposed to be to begin with with surprise combo potential. Flo00 - A more straightfoward reversal that plays out like an interactive Sun Quan, Lord of Wu. There's something to be said for interesting simplicity though and I think this card could actually see print, even if its push isn't as big or wild as the others. What interests me is that the big conflict is between "What is most reasonably exciting" and "What would actually get printed" in these set of submissions, because most cards excel at one while being kind of okay in the other. 1st Flo00 - I think there's honestly something to be said for a card that does its push gracefully even if the push is relatively weaker than the others. The resulting card is much stronger than its original and would be played often in Commander for big swings and politics. In that sense I think it strikes the best balance between the two categories. 2nd hydraheadhunter - Your reimaginings were especially interesting but I feel Snitch brought down the quality a bit. I would love to see how the other two cards actually performed in Modern though. 3rd sdfkjgh - Admittedly I think the unintended interaction really carries this one for me, but it's still an interesting card advantage engine in its own right.

Instant Choose one — • Counter target blue spell. • Destroy target blue permanent. Storm I like this, but I've got a rulings concern. 700.2g A copy of a modal spell or ability copies the mode(s) chosen for it. The controller of the copy can’t choose a different mode. (See rule 707.10.) 707.10. To copy a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack; a copy of a spell isn’t cast and a copy of an activated ability isn’t activated. A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and additional or alternative costs ...
|
I imagine you'd want to add "You may choose new modes for these copies" clause, so that you can put them towards a range of spells and permanents instead of a range of one or another.

Thank you, I didn't know that rule. That's very understandable. The comprehensive rules are as vast as they are deep, and I truly doubt anyone fully comprehends them (I myself run afowl of them all the time; most of the comprehensive rules I know about I only know because they've lost me games). and considering that magic is Turing complete and therefore subject to the halting problem, it's questionable if anyone ever truly can fully comprehend their entirety... Wizards themselves semi-regularly run amuck of them themselves and have to do revisions to the rules and/or errata to cards.
But, if I may make one more suggestion, and this wouldn't affect how the card works, I'm just nitpicking cosmetics; per 601 Casting Spells, and more specifically 601.2b and 601.2c, mode is decided before targets, so I think the reminder text would more smoothely reflect that if it were written like (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn. You may choose new modes and new targets for the copies.) You of course don't have to listen to me, and again I'm just nitpicking because that's one of the things I'm notorious for, in so far as I'm notorious for anything.
Also, so you're aware, it's possible to edit posts you've made on the forum. Typically, when people directly incorporate feedback (as opposed to have a discussion about feedback), you'll see them edit the post that has their original entry (sometimes with a thank you @ the feedback giver to ping them) rather than putting the revised card in a new post down thread. It just helps keep the thread that tiniest bit more tidy. It's not a requirement or anything, just a behavior that a lot of people on the forum choose to do as a courtesy.
