I made a card for another challenge and I was struck by the idea of an angel dragon creature. And that got me thinking, some of the coolest canon cards are cards which are rare or even unique combinations of creature types, Vanafar is the only ooze wizard, [Malfegor] is the only demon dragon, and so on. So here's the game. You'll be prompted with two creature types that have appeared together on a small number of cards, let's say five or perferably fewer (the spirit of the competition is to pick relatively common creature types that have just never been paired together, but I'm not going to expressly ban nephilim and other obscure types like coward, because there could be interesting design space there). A valid submission: - Must have both creature types in the typeline (so cheesing the prompt with changeling in the textbox doesn't work) but the creature types can be in any order as long as order it isn't canonically established.
- May have any unspecified type or super type (If creature isn't specified, tribal spells are fair game but they still have to meet the prompt)
- May use any additional creature types (race and class) in addition to those required by the prompt, unless requested otherwise by the issuer of the prompt.
- Be the only submission you make for consideration.
The contest will be judged by how well submissions hold up as magic cards and how well submission marry the two types mechanically and/or flavorfully. Besides that, standard game faire: the issuer of the prompt judges, and the winner of the prompt issues the next prompt. And I'll start us off with the type combo that prompted the idea. Show me a: Creature - Angel Dragon.

Interesting challenge concept.
Taking the most obvious design for this challenge (render to be addded later):
EDIT: Added render.

The first thing that came to my mind was a dragon rider - except this time, the pilot can 'eject' if things go horribly wrong: Twin-Wing Legionnares Creature - Angel Dragon Knight Flying, double strike When ~ dies, create a 3/3 white Angel Knight creature token with flying and first strike. 3/3 The Scale Riders of the 49th have a proud history of treating their mounts as equals. Should one fall in battle, their rider will avenge them.

Interesting contest idea! My submission (potential render later): Righteous Flame-Wing Creature - Dragon Angel Flying, vigilance Whenever CARDNAME attacks, you may pay . If you do, CARDNAME deals 2 damage to each tapped creature defending player controls. 4/4

hydraheadhunter Speaking of dragon - angel hybrids, this is a real, albeit impossible to obtain or use legally, card: scryfall.com/card/htr18/3/sol-advocate-eternal?utm_source=mw_MTGWikiIt's part of the celebratory Heroes of the Realm series. - Hmmm, we traditionally think of angels to be white and dragons red but there are technically mono-black and mono-red angels and mono-black dragons... Broken Halo Monstrosity Creature - Angel Dragon Horror Flying, haste CARDNAME has intimidate as long as you have no cards in hand. Discard a card from your hand: CARDNAME gets +2/-1 until end of turn. A dragon and a fallen angel were twisted by unholy magic to form this forgotten abomination of Bolas' design.4/4 Not too sure about the power level/rarity and I know the colors aren't typical but red angels and black angels do exist in mtg.

I got distracted. Sorry. So, anyway, judging. Daij_Djan's {Divine Dragon}
Divine Dragon is indeed the most obvious design, but tropes are tropes for a reason, and honestly it works. I would have liked the firebreathing effect to cost hybrid mana to show that its embodying both colors of mana in its breath. ZephyrPhantom's { Twin-Wing Legionares} This card tells a story, and I like the story it tells. I'm a little confused by why angels would need flying mounts flavorwise, but it works mechanically, so I'll suspend my disbelief. Gamma3's {Righteous Flame-wing} A nice combination of white's do things to tapped creatures and red's burn creatures. It might be a bit too efficently costed for my tastes, but it's a good match for the challenge. Marquis of Snakes's {Broken Halo Monstrosity} It's a chunky boy with a really interesting blend of firebreathing, madness, and hellbent. But, it already has flying and giving it more evasion for the cost of having no cards in hand feels both weak and awkward, because it doesn't give you options post-blocker declarations. I really do love the direction you took it, but I think you may want to tune the card's mechanics a bit because in addition to that bit of awkwardness, I'm just not really feeling the angel creature type represented in the card's mechanics.
Winner {spoiler} After a lot of hemming and hawing, I'm going to give it to ZephyrPhantom . Thank you all, and I look forward to the next round.

Thanks for the win! Your next type combination is Wasp Insect (but still preferrably wasp-themed!) and one of your choice: Cleric, Warlock, or Wizard. (I.e. "Warp Cleric", "Wasp Warlock", and "Wasp Wizard" are all valid typelines.)
Good luck!

Wasp isn't actually a creature type, but here's my entry: Acolyte of Parasites Creature - Insect Cleric , Sacrifice a nontoken, non-Insect creature: Create a 0/1 colorless Insect creature token with " , , Sacrifice this creature: Create a 1/1 green Insect creature token with flying and deathtouch." 2/3

I've changed "Wasp" to the proper type "Insect", to reflect the appropriate typing of Wasp cards.

Stingy Necromancer Creature - Insect Warlock Flying Whenever Stingy Necromancer deals combat damage to a player, that player gains a grief counter. Then reutrn target creature card with converted mana cost X or less from your graveyard to your hand, where X is the number of grief counters on that palyer. 3/2 I imagine grief counters to work a bit like experience counters but on the opponent with multiple cards referring them and able to distribute them in different ways. It still works if there is just this one card though.

Eumidian Queen Creature - Insect Wizard At the beginning of each end step, gain control of each creature you own. Untap them. 3/3 I hope it's not too far fetched for a prominent member of a hive mind to be a wizard.

thaneofglamis - An Aristocrat sac-type creature that tries to double your sacrifice value, very interesting and fitting for the color combination. Might be a bit complex but I think that is fitting for its rarity; I think the symbol was a good call to balance things out here, as it keeps the card from getting too out of hand complexity-wise while balancing out the value it gives. I like that you took inspiration from something in reality people might not be 100% familliar with - if this was a real card and Gatherer still worked, I imagine the factoids about Parasitoid Wasps would be one of the most popular comments. Flo00 - Good demonstration of the grief counter mechanic that doesn't feel parasitic - I could easily see this as a one off in an EDH precon. It does seem a bit on the slow side, but it does come with a guaranteed flying body that might make it an okay 2nd-5th pick in Limited depending on what the other cards are. While I think the card might end up mostly as Limited filler, that's not a bad thing if the card itself is well designed for that role. SilentKobold - An interesting Seedborn Muse variation that uses a simple effect to capture the idea of a hivemind. I know this card is constrained by the types given in the challenge but I think it would've been better if it was a Cleric (or perhaps even a Druid, if you want to tweak this post-challenge) and kind of only gets saved by Xira Arien's existence. I think a single line of flavortext or a render would've addressed this slight disconnect, but otherwise it's a fairly plausible card that could be easily reflavored into any set (and as is seems perfectly fit for a specific setting or a Time Spiral set). ameisenmeister - Small wording typos here and there (Insect should be capitalized, Sacrifice after should be capitalized), but it's not the end of the world. I like that the third ability words in any deck, makes it flexible for Limited without forcing you into Insects if you somehow didn't get any. A repeatable 2 damage for 1 mana sac outlet might be a bit pushed though - Tymaret, the Murder King, Lyzolda, the Blood Witch, etc... make me feel like this effect would be safer at . 1st: thaneofglamis 2nd: Flo00

Guess who forgot about this one? viriss - Caravan Great Hound
This is a fine uncommon with a fun keyword, supports aggro tokens and sacrifice as it provides four bodies for three mana. Not much to say on it, although a set with a lot of human and dog tribal support would be cool. gamma3 - Pouncing SabertoothOk, this is the absolute bare minimum of a card. Sorry, but this is too boring for me to hand any points to. viriss wins. Was the disinterest in this challenge because of my prompt?
