Thanks for the reminder vizionarius Unfortunately I don't know if I can do a full judging this week. moweda wins for having the most graceful take on the 'might of the masses' flavor of Citizens that also sends it in a flavorfully fresh direction. Runner ups are emberfire17 for making an interesting lord design and sdfkjgh for scaling up a blue design fairly well (though a maid that powerful is kind of suspicious flavorfully) seen my robotic waifuDorothy Wayneright in action. |

Idea {Spoiler}
Sane Klink-Klanker
I really, really like this guy. It's aggressively costed but seems more or less in-line with other strong 1 CMC 2/1 creatures. I think where this design really shines is in the addition of Bloodthirst. It becomes more useful past the first few turns of the game, and the combination with haste allows for interesting decisions. Do I hit them with direct damage so I can attack with him this turn? Do I want this guy as a cheap blocker? If so, cast him after attacking already. Really cool card that looks super fun to play with. My only issue is I don't understand his flavor at all. melono {Spoiler} Nitpicking Wizard This is a really interesting card, with some definite versatility. 1/2 for feels strange for some reason, I'd rather see 1/1 for . Especially since this creature will likely be played primarily as a combat trick, and the possible effects are simply not that strong. But as a bigger issue, this just doesn't strike me an ideal Human Wizard, which I would expect to have something more wizardy than an ETB tax effect. Very decent card but not necessarily what I was looking for in this challenge. {Spoiler} Jobbing Mage I like the effect a lot for a Vedalken Wizard but this type of card seems like it usually fits better at  because it's such a strong build-around-me card for limited play. I think 1/2 seems more likely for a blue wizard and would help sustain the effect a bit longer. Overall, though, really fun card and I could see that effect being printed. Some really nice entries in this contest, so congrats to all! The winner is:

sdfkjgh{Spoiler}On paper I think this card is balanced, but the fact it makes nonlegendary tokens of any nonland means it can copy itself. Not only that, it does this every phase. If you play this on the precombat main phase and your opponent is not able to immediately respond to it, you could now have 8 creatures. Its gonna be harsh on your life total, but I think even a bit of lifegain could probably get you over the edge to where it's a stronger Biowaste Blob or Scute Swarm, mana cost aside of course. Naturally, the mana cost is a big factor (and part of why I would say this is overall balanced at least on paper), but once it hits the battlefield the effect stacks so quickly that I think it would be too oppressive to be fun for anyone else at the table. Even if this wasn't the case, the frequency with which it makes copies could mean raising armies, easing on combos, and generally making strategies that mean they either wrath or die. Aside from that are only a couple more minor issues, namely that I think making copy tokens is a bit against the spirit of the prompt, and also not the best render... Well, the render issue's not one to really discount any 'points' for since it's not like renders are mandatory here, but on the other hand even if it's not against the word of the prompt it still just copies something. {Spoiler}A haunting image, both the literal image and the image of flavor the card conveys with the name and effects. I think this thing might be a little undercosted considering it's a 3/3 and while it does have a downside, it's a lot harder to interfere with the hand and having something in your hand doesn't cost mana (not in the immediate sense anyway). You don't need to cast Chromanticore to give this thing 5 keywords unlike a typical keyword copier. Even a humble vampire nighthawk will give you a nice package. Seeing as cards like that exist with those stats, I don't think this need to increase the cost by that much, but at least I think would be appropriate. {Spoiler}This card seems very very very weak. Gaining a type until end of turn, at the cost of mana and then an opponent you can't even choose gets control of it? All of this on top of stats that aren't particularly great for its cost, considering how often blue gets such stats with stronger effects at less mana. Maybe there's some way to turn this card into a combo piece, but if there is th ecard doesn't seem to give much immediate incentive to do so. {Spoiler}Doesn't have a lot of shapeshifter flavor in my view, but it's not entirely absent either. Overall it's a simple but effective design and I think it would need some playtesting to figure if that's really a good cost for it. Winner {Spoiler}Victory this time goes to gamma3 . While Flo00 's definitely deserves an honorable mention, ultimately gamma's design edges it out on balance.

Not much to say otherwise. 7/10{ fluffydeathbringer - Subjugator of the Wilds}I like that you challenged yourself to pick an unusual spellcasting class for vampires. Flavor is nice, and the ability is solidly  . Well done. 8/10{ sdfkjgh - Thunderdrinker}Not gonna lie, I was hoping someone would pick a spellshaper. You lose some points it spellshape your own card, rather than a well known existing card. Still looks like a fun design. 6/10{ SilentKobold - Emevera Embalmer}Nice repeatable recursion. Not personally a fan of Allies, but it fits in nicely. Seems appropriately costed considering the cards you're getting back are probably also Allies. 7/10{ Idea - Massacre Bargainer}You're suffering from smalltext a little bit here - as much fun as it is, I'd probably cut the flavor text to solve that. Your last ability here is a bit confusing. I had to reread it a couple times to understand what it was doing. I'd probably make it this turn instead of until next upkeep, making it easier to word and also for balance. It also just doesn't feel totally cohesive - it cares about -1/-1 counters and then the last ability doesn't do anything with them. 5/10{ melono - Dark Magician}Aside from the (possibly unintentional) Yu-Gi-Oh callout, I love love love the flavor here. This card is hilarious to me, and seems fairly well balanced to boot. Pulling rabbits out of corpses is the kind of stupid, silly, slightly dark humor that I love. 9/10A lot of cool designs here - I had fun judging this! If you read the full judging, it should be no surprise that melono gets the win, with fluffydeathbringer as runner-up. Good job everyone! |

gamma3 , just got clarity the design of the abilities there was intended as a mirror of sorts to the keywords. She has wither to inflict -1/-1 counters so she doesn’t take them herself, and with lifelink whoever she damages is at least partially paying for the spell you cast. Either you pay, she pays, or you have to find some victims. As for the timing ti cast things not being until end of turn, I recall there was a specific reason why I changed out of that… but I can’t recall what that reason was.

Continuing with bones, next challenge: Create a common or uncommon Skeleton creature with a not-seen-before regeneration/coming back from the dead ability on other Skeletons.
