Inside a library, a small selection of books lies open on the floor, while others are seemingly floating in the air, or the eye more versed in soul or spiritual-related matters, are being held by bound spirits. The bottom half of those spirits trails back to the one they are bound to, the mass of shadowy mists known as Soumaw, currently in the process of carefully absorbing a book into its body. Perhaps, it believes, it may find some clue regarding the prophecy at this library. After all, libraries are known to be places where people come to obtain new knowledge, stored in the pages of the books. Soumaw is already finding this at least somewhat worth the time, even if it doesn't end up finding those clues, as some of these books seem to contain instructions on some spells. One in particular caught its eye. It repeats the words in the book without really understanding their meaning, though it is aware of the intended effect. Purple light seems to flow through the shadow that make up its body, and then that light is released, forming a cubic shape with several arcane inscriptions upon it. The barrier should interfere with outside-in spellcasting and general intrusion, if the description in the book was correct, giving Soumaw more time to continue consuming books for potential clues.

Chakos enters the library, looking around to see what this place was. "Unmarked, no staff of any sort..." before his attention was caught by the ruffling of pages and the various wooshes of magic. He follows the sounds and turns into a row, seeing the floating books and the purple mass seemingly absorbing a book. "You! Unhand these tomes now!" he says, ignoring the black spark that caught on his skin as a result of casting his own spell. Soumaw turned its head in response to the shout, just in time to feel the warning sensation of the ward, just in time to experience the spell of magic that was thrown at it. The books the ghosts around it were dropped, and there a splitting feeling in Soumaw's mind, as if for a fraction of a moment the shadows that composed it were not bound to itself. Soumaw had a glimpse of a sensation that compelled it to push the book down faster rather than pulling it away, welcoming the pages into its own shadows, and it was far from sated. It was what akin to what beings of flesh and bone would call... ... Hunger. It was as though Soumaw's body recalled the sensation of what it used to be, and what it used to do, seeming to inflate into a wall of dark mists before its newfound conscious brought it back into a smaller and more stable form, expelling the remaining mists forward, like a curtain of black swallowing the path ahead. It should do little more than cause some confusion, but then again Soumaw wanted a moment to recompose itself and that should suffice for it.
(Forgive me for turning it into text, just felt unnecessary to have the image twice, just me being anal) Perfectly fine, don't worry about it. I do prefer to make renders, but if you'd like me to I can start just making the text instead. Backup Suppression Field Instant " style="max-width:100%;"] All nonaura enchantments lose all abilities until end of turn. Learn. Two mana might be two much though, maybe slap a "sacrifice this to do something" on top of it just so it isn't dead sometimes? 7/10. Certainly looks like an interesting strategic play, very blue. You'd have to time it very well, though even without that you might get away with not being punished by two-way enchantments you cast even if your opponent is not playing them. Again, very blue. On a personal level I'm really not a big fan of learn, but I'll account for that to try to not let it affect the rating. I'll give this card an 8/10.

Beginner's Hex: 9/10. This would be a 10 if it were a sorcery. It being an instant means that if you learn it your opponent has to keep it in mind at all times, even during combat. But the effect is niche enough that it doesn't have quite the level of memory issues that, say, an instant-speed damage spell Lesson would.
The dog walks across the street to meet you, remaining slightly cautious. Perhaps it's never seen a drow before?
Mutual Curiosity Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature an opponent controls
When ~ enters the battlefield, target opponent creates a token that's a copy of it. Whenever enchanted creature deals combat damage to a player, its controller draws a card.

"Pah. I have lost focus here. I am needed elsewhere."
Null Reincarnation because it's been years lmao
At the waters edge, a building manifests into view. Marble pillars, marble walls, lined with gold and platinum accents. It seems to beckon to those who see it, the bridge across the water like a hug with open arms. But where did this building manifest from? Is it someone's building? Or is it something of it's own? There's only one way to find out.
As you approach, a sign near the entrance to the building becomes visible. No matter what tongues you know, or what tongues you don't, one word becomes visible to you immediately, the letters in brilliant gold, beautifully and lovingly carved into the marble backdrop of the sign as it sways from it's chains above the main entrance to the building. It reads...
Larynia.

The question remains unanswered verbally. The faint sound of chimes seems to come from within the open-sky building, though the atmosphere remains eerily quiet. From the open archway that leads inside, the statue of the warrior on the far side... begins to move. It only moves an arm at first, and then raises its wrist and curled fist. It unfurls its pointer finger, and then furls it back into its closed fist, beckoning the angel to come closer, to step within the pristine walls. Beckoning Statue Artifact , : Goad target creature. Exploration Angel: Solid card. Feels real. Could probably be a 4/5. 9/10

Beckoning Statue: 8/10. I like the first ability, but the second feels weird to have on an artifact. It is very good that it's exile (one mana artifacts are very easy to bring back), but holding up five mana to deal 3 damage which they can see coming feels awkward. Just in a "I better have something else to do with that 5 mana" kinda way.
That seems to be as good an invitation as I'll get.
The angel steps within the walls, moving to investigate the statue, but keeping a watchful eye on the environment around him.
Surely the statue has some kind of master, or company? It can't possibly be alone here, can it?

As the angel steps foot in the arena, a portcullis slams shut behind him. From the holes in the floor that lead to the shockingly pristine waters come a quiet rumbling, followed by two marble golems coming from either side of the far end of the arena. The four golems march together and form a line, holding carved marble spears, tipped with gold. They begin to march toward the unwilling combatant, stoic and poised for combat.
The space over the arena walls is visibly clear. But something makes this place feel enclosed despite the open view of the sky.
Test of Mettle Battle - Skirmish
(As a Skirmish enters, choose an opponent to protect it. You and others can attack it. You still control it.)
Creatures attacking Test of Mettle have trample. When Test of Mettle is defeated, you may draw up to two cards then discard that many cards. For each nonland card discarded this way, create a 3/1 red Golem creature token with trample. 3 (me when there isn't a battle defense symbol in the symbols list: )
(I see why they don't do these often. Wording them in a way that isn't hard to make sense of is difficult.)
Piabellan Vigil: Seemed weak at first, vigilance makes it better, kinda clunky to read though imo. 8/10

Test of Mettle: 10/10. Introducing single-sided battles that just do a thing when they die is cool, and kinda feels like a better design for the type. "Creatures attacking ~ have trample" is very cool. My only minor gripe is that I could see it at two mana, since you do still have to kill it.
Santen jumps a little at the slam of the portcullis, and he becomes aware of the invisible enclosure.
That's probably not a good sign.
He reacts far less to the golems, looking toward them as they rise, but appearing relaxed by them, if anything.
Ah, just some constructs. But the marble is so finely chiseled, and their gilded spears... It will be a shame to damage them.
The angel draws a golden bow from his shoulder, and finds an arrow from the quiver at his hip. He knocks the arrow, but pauses before drawing.
"You don't suppose we could talk things out, could we? I understand constructs such as yourselves might want to get up and stretch a bit, but you're coming at me rather aggressively, I'd hate to break you." If his words have no effect on the golems, he will draw, taking aim at the closest golem, the tip of the arrow becoming engulfed in light, and fire. "Well, I tried."
Blinding Bolt Instant Choose one: - ~ deals 4 damage to target attacking or blocking creature. - Exile target token.

The golems will not respond and will continue marching in their line formation. The arrow shatters one of the golems, and due to their proximity, shatters both golems next to it. This leaves one golem marching towards the angel. It continues on, unfettered, by the death of its comrades. At least, you could have assumed they had "died", until their pieces begin to move on their own. Faint wisps of red and gold streak the air around the marble chunks as they whirl upward, grinding against each other, forcing pieces to fit together that normally would not.
They soon form to become a giant golem, half as tall as the gilded walls, towering over its smaller companion. "Demand... challenger..." it seems to grumble out through it's core, as it has no mouth. Its spear, however, has transformed into a much longer sword, and with surprising agility it leaps forward, attempting to slash at Santen.
Marble Forge Artifact When Marble Forge enters, create a colorless 1/1 Construct artifact creature token. , Sacrifice X Artifacts: Create a colorless X/X Golem artifact creature token. X can't be 0. Activate this ability only during your turn. The statue at the back of the arena remains still, although in the excitement Santen had likely missed that its pose has already returned to its original state, no longer beckoning or taunting.
Blinding Bolt: Solid white card. Feels in pie, has modal use. Technically I think it should probably say "exile target creature token" to stay in pie, but I think noncreature tokens you want to exile exactly one of are a rare enough use case that it's probably fine as is. Actually the more that I think about it white gets to remove everything but lands and walkers on spells like this so never mind, those cases are very few and still probably in pie. I talked myself into it. First mode is boring (but well designed!) but the second mode makes it an interesting common so 10/10.

On a relaxing day off, though never unarmed or unarmored, Argel finds himself strolling past what becomes increasingly obvious to be a building of beautiful architecture. This is ruined suddenly by the sound of fighting breaking out inside, a bright light from over the top of the wall, and the sound of... stone exploding apart? Whatever this might be, his curiosity is piqued. He attempts to wander around to find the entrance before finding that his path is blocked by a closed portcullis. Not like something so simple to stop him, yet he's unsure if his assistance is even needed. The character whom seems be holding the bow looks to be handling themselves quite well against what appears to be just stone constructs. Perhaps this is a training grounds of some sort. Still, might as well check. "Are you just training with these statues, or might you like a hand?" Argel hollers out. (Attempting to assist the attack, though he can come back another time or otherwise attack Larynia individually if you'd rather, gurfafflekins ) Lend a Hand Instant You and up to one other target player each create a 1/1 red Dragon Warrior creature token. They gain first strike until end of turn. Everyone could use some help from time to time.

The large statue with its blade in hand takes the arrows into its chest, and is damaged but remains standing. "Yeeess... a challenger you are..." it grumbles out, slashing again towards the angel. The small statue darts forward as the Angel is distracted, aiming to get a stab into him while he's distracted. "And a challenger awaits at the door step..." comes a deep grumbling, seemingly from around the arena entirely. As Argel watches, a hand of ceramic raises from behind him and pushes him into the arena, the portcullis slamming shut behind him once again.
Several more marble golems arise from the pools beneath the arena, eight more to match the doubled attendance of challengers.

Whenever a creature you control attacks a battle, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

Aerial Protector: Sure. Solid white protector card. Good. 8/10 Lend a Hand: In a vacuum, this card feels really bad. In a 1v1 format this is 3 mana for a 1/1 at instant speed. Even in a team based or political format, it's two 1/1's with temporary first strike. They could probably just have first strike and it would still be an iffy card. 4/10.

The portcullis opens in response to the second challenger.

Test of Prowess: 9/10. I think this usually just sees play as a Lightning Helix, but if you're making a dedicated battle deck then sure the other words help.
"Oh, if anything, I think they're using me for training, a hand would be much appreciated."
Santen fires next at the large golem's arm, hoping to make it drop its sword. The hand which held the arrow, now empty, holds up a peaceful palm, which moves to intercept the smaller one's lunge. The golem's spear will connect with a small barrier, only half-way conjured, which the angel uses to parry, tossing the spear to the side.
Evidently in danger on the ground, Santen will take off into the air, though not terribly high, staying at roughly eye-level with the taunting statue at the back of the arena, a perfect height to watch over the eight fresh golems as they emerge.
"Especially if they're going to multiply..." he complains as he proceeds to fire at the golems and provide air support for Argel, should he enter the fight.

Shoved by a giant ceramic hand and the portcullis behind him, Argel is left without an escape plan. No way out but through. "Wait, you didn't activate them or anything? That's slightly concerning." Jogging forward and unsheathing his greatsword from his back, Argel lets loose a loud roar to see if he can draw the attention of at least a few of these constructs. Lightning begins to spring from the heels of his greaves here and there as he moves faster and more gracefully than anyone in armor that heavy should. He prepares himself to take a forceful swing at any statue that my try to swipe at or stomp on him. Scaled Charger Creature - Dragon Warrior Haste When ~ attacks, creatures you control with at least 2 level counters gain menace until end of turn. 2/2

However, the force of the arrow knocked the arm off its trajectory and the sword smashed into the floor, narrowly missing the duo. It is slow, and the speed of the lightning greaves leaves him unable to keep up, leaving the smaller statues to leap at Argel. The resulting swing causes shattered marble to fall away from him, scattering on the floor.
As Santen flies into the air, more shattered golem pieces reassemble. They form a statue in the shape of a demon, its marble wings beating heavily and somehow keeping it afloat. It releases a shriek and attempts to dive bomb the angel, blindingly fast --
"Enough..." comes a grumble from the back of the arena. The cacophony of limbs and noises immediately halts, as the marble statues halt their assault. They seem suspended, frozen in midair, unable to be damaged or shattered. The statue at the back of the arena slowly begins to move of its own accord. It takes steps forward, sword at its side, not attacking. The marble golems shatter and make their way back behind the statue, laying in a pile.
Battle (You defend a battle. Your opponents may attack it.) Whenever combat damage would be dealt to you, prevent that damage, then remove that many defense counters from The Lull of War instead. When The Lull of War is defeated, exile it, then create three 1/1 colorless Golem artifact creatures. "War, ironically, does have its moments of peace." - General Zod

"You are... worthy challengers..." grumbles the voice, coming from the statue, though its lips remain stony and unmoving. "This place... craves bloodshed. Carnage. Pain." it says. It raises its sword to its chest, visually splitting the golem down the middle. "You may leave... if you do not... and survive... you may come and go from here as you please..."
Angelic Protection: Interesting Fog variant. Honestly though could maybe cantrip? I guess it can shut down burn kinda hard but sometimes it just doesn't do anything, shuts off damage based wipes. Hard to say. Might be a "better" card overall if it cost 1W and cycled itself? 8/10. Scaled Charger: Of all the things I was expecting to see, giving Lighthouse Chronologist menace was not on my list. Seems a little parasitic in design but hey, most mechanics are. In a void, this card is pretty bad because level counters are largely a relic and are used on enchantments now. Giving the benefit of the doubt and saying it's in an environment where level counters exist a lot, it's an aggressively designed card but I feel like getting two level counters on things is not usually what aggressive decks are doing. Overall, no idea how to properly judge it. 2 mana 2/2 haste though so not abysmal but not the best ratio. 7/10.

The Lull of War: 9/10. This feels more enchantment than battle, but it's still cool.
The angel tenses as the demon lunges for him, only relaxing when the statue finally begins to speak. As it does, he pulls an arrow from his quiver and fidgets with it, twirling it around, but stays in the air.

This character has been focused primarily around designing new Level up cards, though with the twist typically that there is a static p/t, becoming more of a progressive modal creature like Classes of current.)Argel dodges out of the way just barely, taking a breath before turning around and seeing the statues that leaped at him suspended in midair. Hearing the voice, he turns around to hear it out, now that there was less action happening. "I don't see why not. A good bit of exercise goes a long way towards keeping one ready. Or that's what my master used to tell me, despite my protests." Argel holds his blade strikingly similar to how the statue is but more aggressively, and rolls his shoulders. He seems ready for the next move, whatever it may be.
