{ gamma3}A simple Simic Shrine. It's one of my favorite playstyles, so I'm here for it. { Flo00}Probably a bit undercosted, since it's one mana less than Idyllic Tutor and gets you a land as well, even if it does get you a more restricted enchantment. That said, I think we do need specific Shrine tutors, as opposed to wider enchantment tutors, if Shrine tribal is really gonna take off. { SilentKobold}A mana dork that can grow pretty big. Honestly, if they insist on reprinting Ajani's Pridemate, I really don't see much of a reason this couldn't see print, especially on a return to Kamigawa or a supplementary set. { viriss}I mean...c'mon. Bear Monk. How cool is that? That aside, getting a counter on cast is nice, especially since it gets you a card, and allows the bear to get big without getting out of control big. I'm glad you didn't end up changing the design, because I think they both have their own merits. { Daij_Djan}One of the first cards that really drew me into Magic was Sakashima the Impostor, so seeing it in Shrine form is pretty cool. It allows you to double-down on whatever Shrine effect best suits your strategy, and even supports Shrine tribal by slowing down other playstyles, so all in all, I'm pretty here for it. { thaneofglamis}This Shrine is playing with fire. Obviously, the more Shrines you have, the more choice you have, but you're also just gonna be pouring cards into your graveyard. And when that's on every draw, not just once a turn, that's gonna get dangerous quick, even for black. {Winner}I think every card here is good, a few very minor flaws aside. This wasn't an easy decision, but I'm gonna give the win to viriss, mainly because of perceived balance, partly because Bear Monk, with gamma3 and SilentKobold as very close runners-up in no particular order.

Sadistic Wretch Creature - Devil Level up Whenever Sadistic Wretch is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to you. 3/2 LEVEL 1-4: First strike 4/3 LEVEL 5+: First strike Whenever a source you control deals damage to you, Sadistic Wretch deals that much damage to target opponent. 5/4 Yea, that last box is pretty squeezed. Note that it keeps the second ability all the time since its not in a level box.

Wish I had space for flavour text on a leveler. Tried to tell the story of an orphaned warrior, driven further by the tragic deaths of his mentor and love interest to become selfless guardian.

Hey, psst, ZephyrPhantom. This is the Golden Game. Only multicolored entries here Also your card has a really hard case of the Gitrog problem: It goes easily infinite during cleanup.

I was trying to make a Radkos Orc but at some point I kept cutting out the part for balance reasons, lol. Thanks for the heads up.

thaneofglamis Making flash flashier! Nice build up, but the cost might be a little too high at 14 mana total. Just going for 1 and 2 might work better. I also like that you went to an ability that doesn't exist yet, but kept it at rare. Flo00 I'm liking these level up creatures with an initial ability. But spite and first strike work against each other. So that's harder to make work. And at 12 mana total just to do equal pain... that's a hard sell. Jartis I like the use of snow mana for the level up cost. The two abilities are harder to balance out, a creature needs to survive an encounter with the Warlord, and then, meet again just to get exiled. Maybe giving ice counters just for leveling 1-4 and then doing 5+ would be more... useful? SilentKobold Oh another alternate level up cost... and a fellow ally at that! I'm feeling the indestructible for self, but for all your creatures?! That's a harder thing to balance. I mean Avacyn cost like 9 mana (though she does do more). Winner Jartis

SilentKobold Oh another alternate level up cost... and a fellow ally at that! I'm feeling the indestructible for self, but for all your creatures?! That's a harder thing to balance. I mean Avacyn cost like 9 mana (though she does do more). Yeah, it was a pretty difficult balance. I reasoned that the sorcery speed of the level up giving a serious weakness to instant speed interaction, especially those that bypass indestructible, was enough risk to print it at a low cost with a body that's still reasonably susceptible to toughness reduction effects. That said, it would still require a reasonable amount of attention during play-testing and certainly doesn't slot into every standard environment. Anyways, congratulations Jartis, we await your next challenge

Thanks for the win. Yeah, maybe 1-4 should tap to put an ice counter on something, but it didn't feel thematic enough. Idk, I might come back and rework it if I ever actually get around to doing a set XD
Anyway, next challenge, design a creature with an Adventure that is a different color. For example, a creature that only costs white mana with an adventure that only costs green. The adventure and creature can share a color as long as they are at least different somehow, like a white/blue creature with a white/green adventure.

Created this for a COTW a few weeks back and still really like the design so I guess I'll reuse it here. Ideally this would have fit into a cycle of adventure dragons showcasing the struggle between the clans and the broods during FRF. Being playable with in both the clan and brood colours, the cycle would've also further eased the transition between the KTK and DTK limited environments.

And here it is: { SilentKobold}The adventure is a very cool, flavorful white effect, and the dragon is a really solid rakdos design. I might argue it's a bit undercosted, even at 5 cmc, but that metric changes over time, so I'm not gonna judge it too harshly. { Flo00}I'm not sure we've ever had a card count things in exile, especially not one that didn't necessarily put them there, but it is an interesting design space, and I do have to assume it would be white to do it. The adventure is a solid black effect, and the creature seems really fun to run. { viriss}If Wizards ever do a set with Nintendo like they did with Godzilla, I could see this being an actual design and then sticking Link on it in the showcase. I like the combat tricks here; saccing faeries that have blocked to pump your creature and block some big targets. There's a lot to play with, here. Sidenote: I appreciate the use of the 1/1 blue Faerie tokens that already exist, rather than creating a new similar token just to get the Navi flavor. { Sanfonier of the Night}I do love enchantment creatures, personally. This is a good design. My only gripe might be maybe tie the creation of the snake token to being cast from exile? Maybe make more of them if it's cast from exile? That's probably where I'd take it. But like I said, solid. { thaneofglamis}Hey, hey. Simic, token copies, populate, I'm here for it. I love the idea of copying my opponent's best creature, and then making another one. I also appreciate that the statline of the creature accounts for the possibly crazy value of its ability. I do wonder why you went with a cast trigger, rather than an etb, though? Not a bad decision, necessarily, but definitely not one you see often. { ZephyrPhantom}Interesting take. I'm not sure how a sorcery can go on an adventure, but we'll run with it. I do wonder about the color choices here. They're not breaks, they're not even really bends, but they are unusual at common. Usually blue is the color that taps and white is the color that targets tapped things. Like I said, not to say white and black can't do their respective jobs, here, it's just a bit off at common. I do appreciate the one-two punch this card has to offer, I'm just not sure it works as an adventure, as opposed to Aftermath. {Winner}This one took a bit to get going, but once it did, the competition got pretty hot. I'm gonna give this one to thaneofglamis, with Flo00 as runner-up.
