Welcome to one of the MSE forum's oldest games: the Challenge Game! This is a rolling game - it goes post by post, and you can drop in at any time. Here's the deal: - You start by giving the card above yours a rating out of 10 and a brief critique - a couple of sentences will do, but you're welcome to go more in-depth if you like.
- That card will have been accompanied by a challenge, such as "Make a three-colored noncreature card". You will make a single card that fits that brief and post it along with a new challenge for the next person.
- Then, at the end of your post, you'll add a new challenge for the next poster.
A few rules: - Challenges should not request more than one card.
- Challenges based on specific third-party IPs or real-world elements are discouraged, in case respondents don't know what you're talking about. If you insist on posing one of these, please make sure to provide an alternative challenge alongside it.
- You cannot respond to your own challenge, or the challenge set by someone responding to your own challenge. Basically, wait at least two posts between entries.
- In the event of a "ninja", i.e. two people posting responses to the same challenge in quick succession, the first poster's challenge takes precedence, but the next poster is encouraged to rate both.
I'll get us started! Up: (This is where I'd critique the previous challenge if there was one.) X/10. Pelagic Librarian Creature - Octopus Wizard Brainwave - At the beginning of your end step, scry X, where X is the number of cards you've drawn this turn. "Captain Cyla awoke this morning to find all the books missing from her cabin and mysterious dark stains on the walls." - Dreadnought Szalin , first officer's log2/2 Next: Make a three-colored noncreature card.

Previous: 9/10. Interesting card with an interesting mechanic. I can see this being slotted into a lot of control decks. Necromantic Ritual Rites Enchantment Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may sacrifice it. If you do, counter target spell. : Exile target card from a graveyard. You may play that card. If that card would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead. Next: Make me a land that makes some kind of token.

Necromantic Ritual Rites: Good card, something that Grixis would really like to have. Cards that have Flash or that can generate tokens at any time basically turn into counterspells. I'm sure there are ways to abuse this so you can just lock someone out for good, but it probably involves at least two other cards. And I can't fault a card for being OP when used along side Card A and Card B. The second part of the card is pretty neat too and works very well alongside the first portion, but not so much so that it becomes a single card power house. 10/10 Debris Field
Land - Swamp Forest ~ enters the battlefield tapped. When ~ enters the battlefield, each opponent creates a land token named Ruins. (It has " Add .")
Next: Create a Saga that depicts a classic, real-world fable/fairy tale. ~Zuty

Up: Neat design in that it gives you flexible colors at the cost of ramping your opponents, though I feel this would definitely find a home in group hug decks. 8/10 I actually did one of these earlier Escape From Egypt Enchantment- Saga I: Creatures can't attack and their activated abilities can't be activated until your next turn. II: Until your next turn, whenever a player taps a nonbasic land for mana, it produces that much instead. II: Each opponent chooses a creature they control. Destroy each other creature they control. Next: A common nonbasic land

Pelagic Librarian: 8/10. Brainwave is a solid mechanic, though quite similar to mindmeld in my perpetually-in-design set Safiria, and I would totally run it in my Ezuri, Claw of Progress, Commander deck. Also I read “Captain Cyla” as “Captain Cyka”.Speaking of Safiria, have a preview of Core 20xx: Aigwerion Mismar! Set Upon Instant Set Upon deals X damage divided as you choose among X target creatures and/or players. Next Challenge: Design a card that gets actively worse the more creature-centrically you play.
I hate when my Internet goes out. But the above is staying because I'm too lazy to delete it. Escape From Egypt: 8/10. Solid WU Control Saga. Kinda glad it's not real because I loathe playing against control. Urza's Front OfficeLand — Urza's , : Draw a card. This ability costs to activate instead if you control three or more other Urza's lands. Next Challenge: Design a card that gets actively worse the more creature-centrically you play.

Up: Your post seems to lack the tap symbol. I think a land that doesn't produce mana shouldn't be . Even if this produced mana, it shouldn't be. Aside from that, I think it's a good card and an interesting way to use the Urza's type. Creativity Invertix Creature - Elemental Play with your hand revealed. Creativity Invertix’s basic power and toughness are equal to the number of noncreature nonland cards in your hand. , tap, Discard a land card: Draw two cards. */* ok, I see that tap symbol somehow doesn't work as a t between double colons. Next: A split card with one mono-color part and one two-color part of different colors.

Creativity Invertix: I like it very much. Showing your hand is a small price to pay for what it does. A little disappointed it doesn't have any keywords on it, but that's more of a nitpick. 10/10 Grin Instant Change the target of target activated or triggered ability with a single target. (Mana abilities can’t be targeted.)/// Bear It Instant Exile the top card of target players library. If the exiled card is a creature card, that player creates a 2/2 green Bear creature token. Up: The pun in Bear It is beautiful, XD, and it's cool that you can target yourself with that half if you need to. I'd stick this in my Animar deck. Keeper of the Underground Sea Creature - Merfolk Druid : Add or . 1/1Challenge: Make a double-faced card where the two faces don't share any card types. EDIT: Okay, the old codes don't work anymore. Where can I find the new codes? EDIT2: Thank you CanterburyEgg!

Hey, Quazer! In the BBCode editor, click the Smileys button, third from the right. You can click the dropdown in its menu to sift through all of our smileys by code. The main changes are that colors require capital letters, and smileys are wrapped in double colons rather than single now.

Up: I don't know if you are aware that Urborg Elf exists? (Also, there is Druid of the Anima.) Keeper of the Underground Sea should definitely be common. While it's worse than the mentioned Elfs, I think it would definitely make sense in the right set. It feels like from somewhere in between Ixalan and Shadowmoor and for that it makes totally sense as a Merfolk. Wooden Chalice Artifact At the beginning of your precombat main phase, put a +1/+1 counter on Wooden Chalice, then add for each +1/+1 counter on Wooden Chalice. If Wooden Chalice has three or more +1/+1 counters on it, transform it. ----------------- Sap Spirit Creature - Spirit Whenever Sap Spirit attacks, you may remove a +1/+1 counter from it. If you do, add for each +1/+1 counter on Sap Spirit. Until end of turn, this mana doesn’t empty as steps or phases end. 0/0 Next: Tomatoes!

Up: Tomatoes. IDK, I'm too lazy to find cards with fruits on them. (Also everybody says tomato is a vegetable, therefore tomato is a vegetable.) Pyretic Titan Creature - Elemental Erupt (Each land you sacrifice while casting this spell pays for or one mana of any color that land could produce.)When it raises, everything follows.5/5 Next: A conspiracy card with a new keyword. UP: Well who saw that one coming? Love the flavor, not sure about the balance. Life's Light Creature - Avatar ~ gets +X/+X, where X is your life total. Gaining life is useless they said, it only prolongs the inevitable they said. I'll show you inevitable.-17/-17 I mean Serra Ascendant was not broken enough in commander. Next: Try fixing Annihilator.

Up: Honestly seems kind of weak outside of formats with a higher starting life total, like EDH that you mentioned. Obviously is optimal on turn-2 when you haven't done anything to lose life yet. I feel like it could carry lifelink in exchange for a higher cost. Ulamog's New Crusher Creature - Eldrazi Annihilator 2 (Whenever this creature attacks, destroy target permanent with converted mana cost 2 or less.)~ attacks each turn if able. 8/8 Next: Create a Saga card for one of the guilds of Ravnica.

Up: I'd add "defending player controls" to the reminder, else it could be that you have to hit your own stuff. Nice fix of annihilator. Based on the original Ravnica Books: Project Kraj Enchantment - Saga (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III.)I: Distribute two +1/+1 counters among any number of target creatures. II: Distribute four +1/+1 counters among any number of target creatures. III: Create a 0/0 green and blue Ooze Mutant creature token, then move all +1/+1 counters from all permanents onto it. {two bonus Sagas}Summoning of Rakdos Enchantment - Saga (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III.)I&II: Sacrifice a creature, then put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. III: Create a 6/6 black and red Demon creature token with flying, trample, haste and “Whenever this creature attacks, each player sacrifices two nondemon permanents.” Vampire’s Schemes Enchantment - Saga (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III.)I: You may exile another target permanent you control until Vampire’s Schemes leaves the battlefield. II: Each player sacrifices a legendary creature. III: For each opponent, return target creature from that player’s graveyard to the battlefield under your control unless that player discards two cards. Next: A double-faced card with a keyword never seen before on a DFC.

Up: The card seems a little weak. Then again it is a common. However, this is almost like a suspend 6/6, but not really. I like the idea though. The pother cards are oozing with flavor. No keywords used before? So made up keywords count? Ramesh's Ritual of Ascension Legendary Enchantment Vanishing 3 (This permanent enters the battlefield with three time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter from it. When the last is removed, sacrifice it.) You have hexproof. When ~ leaves the battlefield, if it had no time counters on it, return it to the battlefield transformed.
Chosen by Ramesh Legendary Enchantment Hexproof When a creature you control becomes the target of a spell or ability, exile it. Return it at the beginning of the next end step. When a creature dies, transform ~.
Next: Tribe matters card that cares about a non tribe color. (If too stringent: Tribe matters card for a new tribe.)

Up: I like this as a build-around, but I'm not sure how long one can keep creatures from dying to make use of it, and with a 3-turn delay it's unlikely to be active more than once. It's also worth noting that the exile effect is a double-edged sword (think Eternal Scourge) without enough ETB effects to justify it -- To me this feels like a combo piece, which might be what you're going for. In draft it would likely go late until someone found a way to break it, or unless the format has a high density of ETBs and/or an ability to recur them multiple times in succession. In short: It's has a lot of potential in the right, narrow environment (and little potential in the wrong one). This: Innistrad / SOI werewolves are a RG tribe that have a natural synergy with blue, because you can cast nothing on your turn to flip your team, holding up instant-speed countermagic, card draw, and tempo effects. Werewolves are also DFCs, making them perfectly suited to this challenge. {Jayfis Bine, the Hunter} We have Wolf Spirits, but not a Werewolf Spirit. This card also introduces a new mechanic: He has partial control over the transformation process. This would be most at home in SOI draft green-blue splash red or red-blue tempo splash green, both of which are archetypes that can use a bit of help, while still being perfectly playable in RG or RG splash U. The flavor still leaves a bit (a lot) to be desired. I'm not sure how he's supposed to turn into a spirit and back again to a human, or how the spirit would give team investigation. I don't think Reach has ever been printed on a DFC. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Next: Make a DFC that starts as an Aura. I always wished Skin Invasion were playable, and this is a chance to fix it. If this is too narrow: Just make an Aura that doesn't sacrifice card advantage. Edit: Sorry Flo00, I submitted the entry a bit too soon. I was already editing it to add the review and challenge but you were too quick for me.

Up: That's some quirky Temur shit right there. I wish the backside had flying to mirror reach on the front, but I like the weird tribal and differing transform enough to gives this an A-. Daylight Cloak Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has hexproof. At the beginning of each end step, if no spells were cast last turn, transform CARDNAME. /// Moonlit Mantle Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has trample. At the beginning of each upkeep, if a player cast two or more spells last turn, transform CARDNAME. Pain Acolyte Creature- Naga Shaman Whenever ~ attacks or blocks, put a -1/-1 counter on it. , Remove a -1/-1 counter from ~: Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn. 0/5

Up: I was wrapping my head around what an enchantment could do with just keywords. Brilliant work. Grixis Ascendancy Enchantment Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard, put a 1/1 Zombie creature token onto the battlefield. Each creature card in your graveyard has unearth. The unearth cost is equal to its mana cost. Next: Create a card that shows what it would be like if one of the Guilds of Ravnica had the civic function of one of the others (For example Rakdos running the religion/banks, or Gruul running the legal sectors.)

Up: Seems good, although you might want to change the first ability to "Whenever a non-token creature is put into a graveyard from anywhere, create a 1/1 black skeleton creature token" since in it's current state, unless i'm misunderstanding something, it can easily go infinite with certain sacrifice effects like Ashnod's Altar and Altar of Dementia. My Card: Rakdos Inquisitor Creature - Human Cleric Hellbent- When Rakdos Inquisitor enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices a creature if you have no cards in hand. 2/2 "There's a certain twisted justice in the way he punishes crimes against buffoonery. disgusting and yet somehow admirable."-Tajic, Blade of the Legiondecided to go with the "Rakdos in charge of religion" example. Next: Create a card that could fit well in Ravnica Allegiance (feel free to create a new mechanic for a guild, since we don't know what the actual guild mechanics are yet.)

Up: The design feels very well-executed (pun intended). Fleshbag Marauder for less with a hoop seems very playable, especially in aggressive decks which can use the Hellbent more often. I might even make it a 3/1. Orzhov Locket Artifact : Add or , , sacrifice Orzhov Locket: Draw two cards. Or to be more serious: Skarrgan Raiders Creature — Human Berserker Trample 3/2 Another common hybrid cycle seems likely. Next: Design a card inspired by Shakespeare.

|
|
Post by ZephyrPhantom on Oct 7, 2018 21:50:48 GMT
UP: Insert joke about GU destroy target creature here. That said, Skarrgan Raider is a nice sensible design that could go in a variety of sets. Banish to Covenant Enchantment When Banish to Covenant enters the battlefield, choose one: - Exile target creature an opponent controls until Banish to Covenant leaves the battlefield. - Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a nonland card from it and exile that card until Banish to Covenant leaves the battlefield. Referencing "get thee to a nunnery" from Hamlet. Next: Give me a Phyrexian. Old, new, red, white, purple, anything goes, as long as it's Phyrexian.

Up: Probably the part of that play my high school class remembers the most. Good choice with a straightforward mechanic. Now...let's get a little crazy Mishra Compleated Legendary Artifact Creature - Artificer , Exile Mishra Compleated: For each artifact you control, create a token that’s a copy of it. 4/4 I debated several ways to make this card feel powerful (because Mishra kinda is) but not too powerful. I debated making the ability cost normal mana, doing the classic WWUUBBRRGG but in Phyrexian, making it an ETB ability but exiling them at the end step (probably the most sensible but least fun option), but this is what I settled on. Probably not balanced as well as it could be...or at all, possibly, but it's fun, and at the end of the day, that's what the game's supposed to be. At least that's what I'm telling myself XD Now, for the challenge. They're putting MtG into D&D with the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica later this year...why not reverse that? Next: Create a card that represents something from Dungeons & Dragons (a powerful magic item, a major character, a deity, etc) If you don't know D&D that well, a quick internet search will give you something to work with. There's liches, powerful wizards, etc.

Previous: A guaranteed T1 4/4 in a format like Commander, where 6 life is nothing? Yikes. If you dropped the Phyrexian mana, it'd be a very neat little design. C+I wanted to do the Sword of Kas, but it's really hard to word the old-school irony of the thing¹. So instead, have another classic: Raistlin Majere - Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Hexproof Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, you may surveil 2. If you put all of those cards in your graveyard, target creature loses indestructible this turn. 1/1 Because he has to kill Takhisis and the other gods somehow. Next: Take a look at this thread. Pick one of the archetypes there, and make a card that obviously fits one of them. ¹ It's sole purpose was to kill Vecna, and it was a spectacularly powerful anti-undead weapon... that lost all of its power in the presence of Vecna or his artifacts.
