Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and twentieth challenge! The winner of the "Unbreakable Bonds" poll was ziolang with...And the challenge issued by our runner-up was... I'm a fanatic for the designs Wizards makes for coin flips, dice rolls, or just randomness in general, because it takes a lot of creativity as well as design talent to nail one of the cards to make them playable, fun, and yet not too powerful. So, my challenge for this week is to design a card that uses a dice roll, coin flip, or the word "random" in its rules text. Happy designing! Note: As this challenge is pretty close to CotW #70, please don't reuse one of your entries from that contest. ~Daij_Djan To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

To start things off, this was inspired by my old entry as an attempt to do die rolls in black border Magic:
{Outdated Entry} EDIT: Actually, ignore that card - I'm not really happy with the power level span it offers.
EDIT 2: Take a look at this one instead. Taking the inspiration from my old entry in a different (and much more interesting) direction.

fluffydeathbringer : What's the deal with the p/t box?
Can anyone suggest an illustration for this:
Disorienting Journey Instant Choose one at random— • Put target creature on top of its owner’s library. • Put target creature on the bottom of its owner’s library. • Exile target creature, then return that card to the battlefield under its owner’s control at the beginning of the next end step. —————————————————————————————— “Wha happan?”
EDIT: Added render thanks to mixedrandomj & @daij_Djan:

Oh cool I just made a bunch of dice cards. I will go with the one that stacks the odds of rolling a dice since I think just a random number between 1 and 6 is too swingy to be healthy by itself. Loaded Dice Enchantment If you would roll a die, instead roll two of those dice and ignore one of those results. , Discard three cards: Roll a six-sided die and draw cards equal to the result. In games of chance, if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.sdfkjgh : Modal choices are made before targets are chosen and costs are paid, right? Can't you just fail to cast the spell if you roll the wrong mode, return the gamestate to before you began casting the spell and try again?

kinotherapy: I'm not entirely up on such minute intricacies of the rules as you seem to be. Considering each mode has the exact same set of a single target creature, and the only difference is what happens to that creature, I'm inclined to believe the rules implementation is kept to a minimum of difficulty. If I'm wrong, please do not hesitate to disabuse me of my ignorance.
Hell, do it even if I'm right. Ignorance is something to be quashed, not celebrated. Unless it's ignorance of a bad show or some dank memes, as those are trivial enough to ignore.

Ok I think I got something for this. Will make a render later maybe but for now. Wild Rebellion Enchantment All creatures have "At the start of your turn, choose a player at random. You may have this creature deal damage to you equal to its power. If you don't, that player gains control of this creature"Welp I'm gonna change this. Wild Conjuration Sorcery Each player reveals a card from their hand at random. If a player reveals a land card, that player puts it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, that player casts the card without paying its mana cost. P.S. sdfkjgh Thisor This Onemaybe? Just some ones I found if you want to use them.

Here we go... Wooden Mox Artifact : Flip a coin. If you win the flip, target player adds . If you lose the flip, you lose the game unless you pay . "For young wizards it's just a pastime. For the archmages it's a deadly game."
EDIT: Wooops, missing image, I'll load it asap. kinotherapy : Thanks for the advice, now that I have read that part of the comprehensive rules, it's clearer. I hope this EDIT fixes the issue.
EDIT: Render added... I don't know exactly how to insert an image, suggestions are welcome.

sdfkjgh : I was genuinely asking, I don't actually know the answer. I'm not sure how you'd indicate that the random choice is supposed to be made on resolution instead of when you cast it. NivOridocs : There's a problem here in that if you lose the flip while paying costs for a spell / ability, you might find yourself unable to cast whatever it was you were trying to cast and make an illegal action (which I'm certain this time does reverse the gamestate to before you cast the spell. I have no idea what happens to the penalty payment). Luckily this already happened in Unstable so you can easily fix it by making it target a player instead of just working on yourself. This works since it turns it into an activated ability rather than a mana ability so that it can only be used before you begin to cast a spell / activate an ability. (also you've got all week to add a render so there's no rush)

mixedrandomj: Thanks. I think I'll be using the 1st one, as Escher is a little too obvious. Do you know who did the 1st one? I'd hate to get snipped for lacking artist's credit.
kazerima: You should really change the name of one of the sides, as two different cards with the same English name is an Un- only thing.

Well, it does have random in it's last chapter: Please tell me if the card is undercosted and why. Also, do you think the knight token should have haste or not?

I quite like this entry. It's pretty good and VERY flavorful. I think the cost is about right since it has a drawback to compensate the strong initial abilities.

@ sdfkjgh: That image sure is hard to track down. It seems like Kevin Lafin was the original artist but I'm not 100% sure.

kazerima : You should really change the name of one of the sides, as two different cards with the same English name is an Un- only thing. The idea though is that it's a massive wurm that's so big you have to fight either its head or tail, they're two halves of literally the same being. I could just rename the other half "Worldcoil Wurm's Tail", but it kind of sticks better flavor-wise this way. Also, die rolls and coin flips are also traditionally Un-Mechanics, so it still seems fitting.

Cogwork Pestling Artifact Creature - Pest Draft this card face up. At any time during the draft, you may turn this card face down. If you do, all players draft their next card at random. ~ cannot be blocked. 1/1

sdfkjgh Nice. Looks good. I would totally use this with art and all. I got some decks that would love to use this. One question, is that flavor text intended?
|
|
|
Post by sdfkjgh on Jun 15, 2018 1:56:12 GMT
mixedrandomj : Yes, that flavor text is completely intentional. If you've ever been concussed, if you've ever been surprised by a perplexing situation, that flavor text is meant to convey such confused surprise. Just out of curiosity, what sort of decks do you run that want this? I could be convinced to have you on as a guest writer for Dicking Around in Tosche Station.

Having a tough time finding art that isn't already from a real magic card, but here is what I've got: Reckless Slaughter Sorcery As an additional cost to cast CARDNAME, sacrifice a creature you control at random. Destroy up to two target creatures. "Whee! That was fun!"Art-less render: {Spoiler}
