I don't think this saying is all that popular nowadays, but it was one my Grandma told me which really stuck with me. It was "É melhor perder um minuto na vida do que a vida num minuto." Translation is on the flavor text:  |

The saying in the card's flavor text is a translation of the latin phrase "Qui gladio ferit, gladio perit", which is a reformulation of a warning made by Jesus from Matthew's evangel. It simply means that those who harm others should expect to receive harm themselves. Its italian translation is "Chi di spada ferisce, di spada perisce."
Lady The wording should be "Shooting Sparrows with Cannons deals 5 damage to..."

Deal 5 damage to target creature with toughness 2 or less. "Sir, isn't this just a little overkill?"
"Man skal ikke skyde spurve med kanoner." translates to "Don't shoot sparrows with cannons" and it basically is something you say to someone who brought a tool that's much more advanced than needed for the job, or someone who's about to seriously overdo a simple task. I feel like I can do better than this, but it is a start. |

A friend of mine made a game about phrases in other languages that make no sense when you translate them literally. One that felt most odd to me was "Who doesn't know an eagle should roast it." Supposedly in Arab that means something like "Do you even know who I am?" Inspired by this, here is an eagle that you can roast when you don't know it (a.k.a. discard it). To be fair, those are all creatures. Enchantments need to be stronger because they don't impact the board at all. To be fair, I mostly play Limited so I can't really say anything about whether it'd be good in something like Modern. |

First of all, you don't need to change your post even though anyone thought yours was broken. This is a poll game so you can win it even if yours was a 19 damage Lightning Bolt as far as most voters thought it cool. Btw, I'm in favor of sd. The effect is almost Growth Spiral so it is simply an one drop card that can repeat a two mana spell for two mana. It is not so far away from a one mana enchantment with " : 3 damage to any target". And imagine this move: Turn 1: Set a land and cast it. Turn 2: Set a land and activate it. Put a land onto bf and draw a card. You can deal with your opponent's aggro creature with your Fading Hope or Shock or so. Turn 3: Set a land and activate it. A land enters bf and draw a card. You can use 3 mana to defend you from aggro opponent's creature. Or if your opponent's deck is not fast, you can reactivate it and set a land and draw a card then repeat it once more. Not always this move will be realized, but it is not a rare case. Can you imagine a vision to win against this deck? Even aggro deck can't beat it unless you destroy the enchantment at turn 1 or 2. Otherwise, the opponent repeats draw and ramp without any tempo loss. And if your deck was a control, it is more hard. They already drew four extra cards and have seven lands at the beginning of their turn 4. Even in limited, nothing will change. It will be MVP in most games. Like Dockside Chef has a two mana ability inferior to Deadly Dispute, it needs a weaker effect if you wish to balance it without changing the casting cost and activating cost. But once again, it doesn't mean you need to change your post. Not everyone will think it broken and not everyone avoid to vote to a broken card. |

That's a very specific sequence of cards though (3-4 card combo at minimum not counting the fact you need to draw into lands) and not a good demonstration of how the card would work in practice. I think what twintania gave was a much better example for why this is probably too strong. Logically speaking, this card is considerably better than Gretchen Titchwillow in that it's much cheaper mana wise and can't be interacted with as easily. It's true that one's an uncommon and the other is a rare but the power gap between these cards is probably way too big for that - we're probably approaching Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath levels of good here with the current cost, maybe better. In other words, I think we're past the point where this is "powerful but interesting" and approaching the territory of "WotC would probably not print or ban this", which I think is a good case for weakening the card a bit. The most practical way would be to be fix by costing it similar to Gretchen - or casting cost and an activation cost of should work fine and make it a reasonable card for any Standard environment. You could however play with Daij_Djan's suggestion a bit and cost it more aggressively by having the lands ETB tapped, which I think would make it more interesting - something like or casting cost with an activation cost of or (but the lands enter tapped). Alternatively, you could try and keep the ability activation aggressively cheap at but add an additional cost like sacrificing a permanent or discarding a card of some kind (e.g. a green creature, a Forest, etc...). (I still think the casting cost needs to be or minimum). There's a lot of things you could play with here to change the card, which I think makes it very interesting overall. |
