So I ended up going through a list of stuff I know and I found most of it probably wouldn't meet the criteria of popular. Then I had an idea for something that might mildly qualify, and so I went with the main cast of Digimon Tamers and what many consider its best character. Also a meme. Some information: -This would go in a reminder card, but creatures with digivolution always have four stages: they begin at a rookie, advance to champion, advance to ultimate, then advance to mega. They have the properties of whatever stage they are on, or the closest one below it. -The label would be stage not level on the boxes, but the mainframe editor didn't let me edit that And this last one is just an extra for fun. It's not part of my entry for this contest, but it was funny. {{If you know, you know}}

Thanks a lot emberfire17!
Next challenge is to make four cards that go 1-2-3-4 in some way. This can be as subtle or as obvoius as you like.

Idea wins by default. I think affnity on a card that costs 1 generic mana is a bit strange. For quadruple strike, there kind of is firstest strike as an option.

That's a good suggestion and thank you for the win, even if it was just a default Flo00 . Shame there were no other entries. For the next challenge, make a set of at least 3 cards, where one cards requires the rest specifically to be cast or enter the battlefield.

Primal Hyrda Creature - Hydra Primal Hyrda enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. Whenever Primal Hyrda attacks, put a number of +1/+1 counters on each other creature you control equal to Primal Hyrda’s power. 0/0 Primal Cantor Creature - Elf Bard : If a creature named Primal Hydra would enter the battlefield under your control this turn, it enters the battlefield with double the number of counters on it instead. Whenever you cast a spell named Primal Uprising, untap Primal Cantor. 1/2 Primal Uprising Sorcery Mill two cards for each creature named Primal Cantor you control. Return a creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it.

Primal Hydra- A perfectly serviceable card comparable with Cultivator of Blades. Primal Cantor- Both effects are too dependent on the other two cards with no real means of fetching them, and while the effect is strong I don't think it's strong enough to justify the risk of this basically being a chump blocker at best. Primal Uprising- A good design for a card that interacts with a specific card, in that it is boosted by its presence in a significant way, but nothing too broken and the card still works without it. Victory goes to Flo00 by default.

Thanks for the feedback!
Next: Make 4 or more cards that have a flavor and mechanic connection. Each card type may only be used once among those cards.
I'll keep this open until there are at least 3 entries... even if it takes years. (2 default wins in a row; seems like this game is dying.)

Book Burner Barbarian Creature - Human Barbarian ~ must attack each turn if able. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, ~ gets +2/+0 until end of turn. She finds a dragon's heart in every book. 1/1 Behind the Bookcase Sorcery Target creature you control can't be blocked until end of turn, investigate, then scry 2. What secrets lie behind the bookcase? Is it a secret doorway? An old hidden map? A piece of chewed up gum? Only one way to find out... Rapidfire Interrogation Instant Target creature gains double strike until end of turn. ( It deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.) Investigate. ( Create a Clue token. It’s an artifact with “, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.”) "Where is he?! Who is he?!" Biblioplex Search Orb Artifact When ~ enters the battlefield, investigate. , Exile ~: Return target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand. Assembling the Team Sorcery If you control exactly one Pilot as you cast ~, copy it. Create a 1/1 white Human Pilot creature token. Daredevil's Trial Instant ~ deals 3 damage to target creature. That creature gains double strike until end of turn. Ambitious, but rubbish.O'Neal, Racing Ace Legendary Creature - Human Pilot When ~ enters the battlefield, search your library and/or graveyard for a Vehicle card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you search your library this way, shuffle. Whenever a creature you control crews a Vehicle, target creature gets +1/+0 and lifelink until end of turn. 2/4 "On my so-called ninety-fifth life and counting."The Lihux Artifact - Vehicle Ward Whenever a creature crews The Lihux, put a lap counter on it and draw a card. {melono}Book Burner Barbarian: Solid common creature. Behind the Bookcase: Strong for a common, but not too strong. I guess some decks would play this just for a 1 mana investigate + scry with some extra. Rapidfire Interrogation: Also strong but not too strong for a common. Biblioplex Search Orb: Good "seal" type of card. Overall: I like all the flavor texts. They don't connect the cards directly but I can still see a story playing out here. I like how you made all commons yet all of them together makes quite a strong combo.
{Idea} Venuvian Steel Fortress: I'm going to assume this works like the other bid life cards and only the high bidder loses the life. Interesting that you allow for euqal bid and then give the controller the choice. Strong land with an interesting potential downside. Akfus/Curses: Fun build around effect to make your deck as type diverse as possible. Also nice that the horror is kind of an ultimate but isn't achieved though loyalty. Since their name is Akfus, shouldn't the backside be called Akfus's Curses? One Senator to Spark a War: Fun idea to make a creature with aftermath. Makes it a bit arkward that the sorcery part is hanging there when the senator is on the battlefield, but I wouldn't worry too mcuh about it. Interesting cost on Spark a War, both the phyrexian mana and the optional sacrifice to get the card online if you didn't manage to do it by other means. Bloodrain Massacre/Trauma: Looks like a brutal tool for muliplayer games. In a good way. Overall: Impressive that you managed to get all card types (save tribal) on 4 cards. It's a very dense package. Seems to be quite the grim story that's unfolding here. Mechanically Akfus is the only connecting element here. {ZephyrPhantom} Assembling the Team: Simple spell with an interesting tribal effect. I like that it combos into inself, but kind of only once. Daredevil's Trial: I'd really like to have this for my Zurgo deck. Good card that doubles as removal and combat trick for big enough creatures. O'Neal, Racing Ace: Nice vehicle tribal card. I like how you can distribute the lifelink among multiple targets if you use more than one crreature to crew. The Lihux: The card draw seems pretty strong. If you have at least 4 untapped power you can just tap all your creatures at end of turn to draw a card for each. Seems almost like an Azami tha doesn't care about creature type. Overall: Nice that you made one of each rarity. Clear mechanical and flavor connection. I really like all three entries. You explored the restrictions in very different directions. {winner} melono wins with a simple but effective combination.

Tyftw! Yeah, they are strong commons cuz I went for cards alike current strong common cards, like Raking Claws and Slip Through Space. Anyhoo, next challenge: Create three cards that make use somehow of an existing mechanic you like. Whether they are using the mechanic itself or give/use resources for/from the mechanic. Also, if it isn't obvious, mention the mechanic as well. PS: Mechanic may be interpreted in the broadest of ways. Like "attacking" is also a mechanic, but so are keywords.

The intended mechanical cohesion there was about every card having a way to make you lose life and making an opponent lose life, and I tried exploring different ways to do it. Akfus and Bloodrain Trauma were intended partially as cohesion cards that were supposed to highlight the two running mechanical themes. I suppose it didn't quite work out as well as I hoped, though.
Current contest entry: I chose the mechanic "Blocking" for two reasons. One, there's rarely a chance to pick it as a mechanic since mechanical stuff is usually talking about keywords. Second, I love blocking as a mechanic as it is both one of the most unique things about magic that I can't think of a single other card game that has it, and also one of the things that make love this game the most. The reason is simple: It's an inherent defensive advantage. Blocking means the defender has the decision on what resources to use to protect their life and which ones are too important to risk. It also means the attacker has greater risks and can't just swing into the optimal targets at will. This set up is pretty great for someone who prefers longer games, more controlling strategies and the like. A defensive advantage won't win you the game, but it can give a chance to strategies that aren't just racing the opponent down. I was originally going to make four cards, then checked the contest again and only had three. I tried to show the different kinds of blocking in MTG, walls, chump blocking, deathtouch blockers, but ended up skipping on the normal blocking. Now, without further ado:

Smol judge: Idea - As I feel like current designs favour attacking over blocking, these are very refreshing to see (especially the fortress, counterattack is a neat keyword), and would be great in long range control/combo decks that need their blockers in order to survive long enough. vizionarius - I know Gold tokens used to be a thing, but you have to face it... they're "treasures" now. Still interesting takes on using the concept of gold. Also, Goldsmithy is just waiting to combo off. Giving the win to Idea for blocking out the bad vibes.

elchetibo {Spoiler} I very much like the sequence here, and it's a classic I would say. Fearless Rookie- Simple stats and keyword common, not much to say here. Peerless Soldier- Effectively adding battle cry onto the previous for one extra mana cost. I see little reason to make this uncommon, but otherwise it's balanced. The flavor also feels a little wobbly, but I suppose they are inspiring the others with their skill? Nameless Veteran- I think you're rather underestimating the difference between temporary PT and +1/+1 counters. Your card isn't quite slapping Archangel of Thune with Sera's Blessing because you can't put your forces except with the one attack, but I think a one-time counter pump can be easily put at 3 mana, while a repeatable one would go at 4 or 5. Consider the body and this having and giving vigilance and I think it should be a 6-mana card. This would break the sequence you're going for, but the alternative would be toning down the card's effects. I'm also not sure how the 'Nameless' part of the name works with the flavor. melono {Spoiler} There are a few problems, but I quite enjoyed how these cards came together, and the theme of the catterpillar to butterfly is another nice classic. Consuming Caterpillar- Considering Chronomaton, I think you could lower this card's cost by . Yeah this doesn't cost a mana to use and you potentially get a food token, but exiling a card from your GY is arguably a bigger cost, not to mention a condition that limits the number of times you can do this even across turns. Really the initial stats are the only reason I don't say it would be one mana. Wall of Cocoons- I think the card works well balance-wise, but the flavor and mechanics seem rather unattached from each other. I'm really not sure what it's supposed to be conveying. The caterpillar seems to give you life via food tokens by eating, but this one gives life through... flying creatures? So they are feeding on the cocoons or something? If the idea is that it's making butterflies that still doesn't make much sense given it's not producing a new flyer... Corpseflower Butterfly- Probably very overcosted here. In terms of base power and toughness that's most definitely the case and while the power-increasing ability can really escalate it's also something which requires set up, and even with that set up you still play this card that is relatively slow (no immediate board impact beyond existing) and is basically a vanilla in a lot of ways. Speaking of that ability, I can't help but feel that's not really a white ability and would be more at home in green or red. I really like how it works with the other cards though, particularly how it turns Caterpillar's ability into " , exile (...): Put a +1/+1 counter on ~ and possibly make a food token too". Winner {Spoiler}Both entries were close, but ultimately while I think elchetibo did a better job doing a sense of progression among the cards and I think they have better balance overall, melono 's cards work better together in mechanical terms and tried some more interesting effects. Nothing wrong with simple cards or effects of course, but I do appreciate it when cards do something a little more engaging. I am giving this victory to melono though it really was a close call.

Unearthed Treasure Artifact - Treasure When ~ is put into your graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield, you may put it onto the battlefield tapped under your control. , Sacrifice ~: Add one mana of any color. Blood Extractor Artifact Whenever the first creature dies each turn, create a Blood token. Blood you control have " , Sacrifice this permanent: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control." Murder Investigator Creature - Vampire Detective First strike Whenever a creature dealt damage by ~ this turn dies, put a +1/+1 counter on ~ and create a Blood token. Each Blood you control is a Clue in addition to its other types and has " , Sacrifice this permanent: Draw a card." 3/3 I hope the Bloods from Murder Investigator count as Clues for the sake of this challenge (due to his static, they are technically Clues when they get created). The idea is a pauper EDH with him as the commander.
