Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and forty-third challenge! The winners of the "Condition Zero" poll were Aarhg (top left), aquonn (top right) and Tygerius (bottom) with...And the challenge issued by one of our winners was... WotC doesn't like the old downside mechanics, but the design space still remains. Design a card with an old downside mechanic. Old Downside mechanics include: Cumulative Upkeep, Phasing, Echo, Fading, and Vanishing. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

So we must use one of the five mentioned keywords? Nothing like Lord of the Pit's drawback?

My submission for this week, i was considering adding an ETB effect to it, but judging that it can already trigger other creatures effects every turn, i decided against it.

So we must use one of the five mentioned keywords? Nothing like Lord of the Pit's drawback? I feel like using the listed mechanics was probably intended, only because it quickly becomes a grey area what rules text constitutes an old-style drawback.

So we must use one of the five mentioned keywords? Nothing like Lord of the Pit's drawback? I feel like using the listed mechanics was probably intended, only because it quickly becomes a grey area what rules text constitutes an old-style drawback. I'm leaning that way as well, but it's not 100% clear from the way the challenge is worded. I'll just stick to one of the five mentioned ones.
Edit: Card added below!
This is a bit of a riff on Quicksilver Amulet. It has the potential to sometimes be more powerful, but you also run the risk of being completely blown out by something like Naturalize.

While working on potential card designs, I found out that Fading and Vanishing are basically the same mechanic. Unrelated, here's a card with Vanishing:

Flo00"You missed of between number and bushido." Thank you grammar has been corrected "I find it very confusing to have the counters have the same name as the ability. Unless they work like flying counters, granting the ability as a rule." That was what I was going for. Just like Menace or Flying counters. but we know that a creature with two flying counters doesn't give the creature double flying. (which would be weird, how would that even work lol" but this way if Kitsune Deathblade has two bushido counters on it, Kitsune Deathblade would have Bushido 2, not two instances of Bushido 1.

emteedy: Nice. Reminds me of Chronozoa. Yours is slightly better than Chronozoa, because it costs less, and you get the copy almost immediately, but it's also slightly worse, because each new copy needs more mana to be paid, so I'd say they're about even.
Aarhg: Interesting, but I worry about potential memory issues. I'm sure the players can work something out, but I still worry.
My entry:
Veteran Haggler Creature--Human Cumulative upkeep (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.) Spells you cast cost less to cast for each age counter on Veteran Haggler. Cumulative upkeep costs you pay cost less for each age counter on Veteran Haggler. ------------------------------------------- " for that? You must be mad!" 2/4
All my other cards with cumulative upkeep actually use it to benefit you, stretching the definition of "drawback" beyond all reason, so I thought I'd pick the only one that stuck at least partially to the spirit of the Challenge.

Tolaria Freshman Creature - Human Wizard Echo—Discard a card. (At the beginning of your upkeep, if this came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep, sacrifice it unless you pay its echo cost.)When Tolaria Freshman enters the battlefield, draw two card. Expectations at the Tolarian acadamy are high, and a lot of freshmen drop out during their first year.3/2

vstrange: You missed of between number and bushido. I find it very confusing to have the counters have the same name as the ability. Unless they work like flying counters, granting the ability as a rule. Maybe use training counters instead? sdfkjgh: So because of the last ability I pay for the first counter and then from then on? Seems kind of busted for making all your spells cheaper.

Demented Recollection Enchantment Cumulative upkeep—Mill a card. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.), Sacrifice ~: Return target permanent card from your graveyard to the battlefield. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. "To think I had almost forgotten about you." —Zur the Enchanter

@fermant - Is that a colorless enchantment? ----- I imagine my entry would be used in some kind of superfriends style deck. I hope it appeals to people. Phasing is weird enough that even on a mythic it warrants reminder text. At least for the normal variant. Fullart planeswalkers get to trim away the messy italics and have larger ability text

spazlaz I think we're sticking to using one of the five drawback keywords mentioned in the challenge this week, but aquonn will have to chime in with the final word on whether more general drawbacks are fine to use as well.

sdfkjgh I expected it to reduce the cost that I have to pay per counter. Or in other words the cost that is printed on the card. I guess your version works as well.
