Hey all, Inspired by the Set Theme Game, I thought it would be interesting to explore magic's expansive multiverse from another direction: PlanesThe rules are simple and fairly standard: - Each week, the challenger chooses the plane where the submitted plane cards are located. Custom planes are permitted, providing the challenger provides a blurb of the setting for the submissions to build upon. - At the end of the week, the challenger judges the submissions on both flavour and mechanics, and selects a winner; the next week's challenger. So without further ado, your first plane is: Amonkhet

NaktamunPlane - Amonkhet Whenever a creature you control dies, gain 2 life and draw a card. : Whenever you roll , sacrifice a creature, then create a token that's a copy of it, except the token's a white Zombie with no mana cost in addition to its other colors and types.

I'd rather avoid starting this off with just two entries, so I'll leave this open for another day if anyone wants to get any last minute entries in.

Sadly, I'm not really as creative as I'd like to be - so I'll use an older design:
For those that don't know / remember, Atuum was my own take on an Egypt like plane, so I think rebranding the plane card is fine here Effects taken from Desert and Desert Twister.

The Lazotep Mines Plane - Amonkhet At the beginning of you upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on each non-Zombie creature you control. Whenever you roll , exile target creature card from a graveyard. Create a token that’s a copy of that card, except it’s a 4/4 black Zombie.

The Lost Pyramid of Calo'zalPlane - Amonkhet Whenever a creature attacks, put a -1/-1 counter on it. Whenever you remove , you may remove all -1/-1 counters from target creature, then add one mana of any color for each counter removed this way. Taking inspiration from Ozymandias/Ramesses II, aka the guy who had a "Look at my works, ye mighty, and despair!" poem written after him, combined with The Great Pyramid of Giza. I wanted to make it a "raid site" referencing the implied "archaeological Egypt" theme WoTC has implied they wanted to do for next time. The -1/-1 references notorious traps and diseases found in the pyramids that plagued discoverers and started the myth of the pyramids being cursed. The chaos effect is a lucky creature finding treasure and managing to escape the traps Indiana Jones-style, albeit tweaked a bit so that it's straightforward to understand and useful for politics.

Plenty of excellent designs to start off this challenge. It's going to be hard to pick a winner. { fluffydeathbringer}The flavour is on point with this one, showcasing how integral the 'unworthy-dead' were to the societal structure of Naktamun. While the chaos, on it's own, is fairly inconsequential providing minor graveyard and token synergies, the synergy of with the static ability efficiently gives it a more generic use while building effectively on the aforementioned flavour. { thaneofglamis}Good use of the Amonkhet mechanics to represent the flavour of the area, especially for a relatively unexplored region of the plane. While overall the static ability is a bit low impact compared to most planes, the chaos certainly keeps players from being too greedy diluting the impact of the ability over too many creatures. { Daij_Djan}A nice reference to the OG deserts though I would've at least liked to have seen the plane changed to Amonkhet for the challenge. Overall a simple and clean design that captures the emptiness of Amonkhet's expansive deserts. { Flo00}The return of the Eternals is certainly very appropriate for a chaos ability, though perhaps the static ability would've been better suited as a zombie buff than non-zombie hate. This is because Lazotep only affected zombies in any meaningful capacity (its original use was even to seal them in tombs) and while the two abilities synergise effectively mechanically, the flavour just seems a little off. { ZephyrPhantom}I've always like the use of planar cards to expand upon the regions of plains only alluded to in their expansion representations. This certainly does so quite effectively and treasure hunting could certainly be a theme of a Return to Amonkhet set now that the people of Naktamun have been forced to flee into the desert. Mechanically the abilities synergise well and don't detract from the flavour creating an altogether solid design. {Podium}Winner:ZephyrPhantom Runner-up:fluffydeathbringer

We haven't visited Segovia yet so I thought I'd have some fun making mini-giants. Tried to still make them seem giant from the perspective of the plane's shrunken inhabitants.

Valley of Tiny Ambitions Plane - Segovia Whenever a player would add two or more mana, they add half that much mana, rounded down instead. Whenever a player would draw two or more cards, they draw half that many cards, rounded down instead. Whenever you roll , add and draw two cards. Yes, the chaos ability will effectively let you add two different mana and draw a card.

My bad, a lot of things happened in between then and now. I don't have time to judge this one in-depth unfortunately so for the sake of the keeping the game going: 1st: viriss - I feel like this would be the most plausible direction WOTC would go in should they want to follow up to the plane. Feels like you emulated the plane's ability to control everything's size very well. 2nd: Flo00 - Not sure if this is a reference to Marshmallow's never-finished Segovia set or not but either way I think it's a solid idea. I just don't like the ambiguity of the chaos ability and would've at least liked to have seen that as reminder text. Probably would've been better to go with add five of any color instead. 3rd: SilentKobold - Cool idea mechanically but I think this is a flavor fail for Segovia which explicitly shrinks things. Feels like it should be a different plane instead and the Giant Knights should be human.

Frozen Harbor Plane - Kaldheim During each player’s untap step, that player chooses a permanent card type. Only cards of that type untap during that untap step. Whenever you roll , untap all permanents you control. Planar scry 2, then planeswalk. (To planar scry 2, look at the top two cards of your planar deck, then put any number of them on the bottom of your planar deck and the rest on top in any order.) I realized without the scry and walk this is almost The Eon Fog, so I put a little extra on it. I guess the harbor collapses into the blind eternities when it melts?

What the heck, it's been a year, Planechase doesn't get enough love: let's revive all the games (also check out Planechase, Uncharted which is the fast-firer version of this game (which I didn't know this existed when I made PU). The Mists of Istfall Plane - Kaldheim If an untapped creature would die, tap it instead. It is a spirit in addition to its other types, gains flying, and does not untap during its controllers untap step for as long as you remain in The Mists of Istfall. When you planeswalk away from The Mists of Istfall destroy all spirits. Chaos. Whenever you roll chaos, untap all spirits you control. They gain indestructible and vigilence until end of turn. At the end of the next combat phase, planeswalk.

Now that Kaldheim isn't even in Standard anymore, anyone want to make a plane for it? Might be good to see if viriss can judge at this point. StarnheimPlane - Kaldheim Whenever an attacking creature dies, its owner may pay . If they do, they create a 4/4 white Angel creature token with flying. Whenever you roll {Chaos}, destroy all non-Angel creatures. I think this might be a bit tougher to keep alive because unlike things like Commanders or Booster Packs these aren't necessarily game pieces people see everyday when playing Magic, but at the same time I think Plane cards are neat and definitely could use a bit more love.

I think this might be a bit tougher to keep alive because unlike things like Commanders or Booster Packs these aren't necessarily game pieces people see everyday when playing Magic, but at the same time I think Plane cards are neat and definitely could use a bit more love. I'm of the firm opinion that planechase is a really neat format that's just been woefully neglected ever since it was introduced. It's my opinion as a hobbiest card enjoyer that every booster box set WotC prints should be accompanied by a static pack of 12~20 planechase cards relevant to that set with best off catch-alls for core sets whenever they exist. The cards in the 'static plane pack' could be balanced around the never before seen idea of planechase draft.
It'd be just so much fun and give us such a firmer grasp on the geography of each plane that gets the treatment. But alas, WotC-hasbro has different priorities to letting the MTG and DND creative teams do whatever cool shit they want, like attempting to fuck over the entire 3rd-party publishing industry built around the OGL 1.0a, and printing too many sets in a year at too damn high a price. viriss , Kaldheim's your contest.
