Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and twelfth challenge! The winner of the "The exact right amount" poll was myself with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Originally showcased on a single playtest card, Ikoria and Commander 2020 have brought keyword counters to blackborder Magic. So with this introduction, your next challenge probably is no big supprise: Design a card using one or more ability counters! You may either use the existing nine ones or even come up with a new one. Have fun! To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I'm being a bit cheeky here and using the same entry here as in the Picture into Card thread, because the two together gave me the idea (I'm even using the same post text). The idea was, "What if you applied keyword counters offensively?" - So this card is doing that, using Defender counters to remove the ability of creatures to attack. I've costed the effect based on Hex, treating the loss of ability to attack as a less severe version of destroying a creature. I went with Red over White or R/W because the idea of backing the opponent into a corner and amassing your forces until you can wear their defences down feels more Red than anything else to me.

Does this count?
Boomstick Instructor
Creature--Human Wizard Soldier
When Boomstick Instructor enters the battlefield, put a red Wand counter on each creature you control. For as long as a creature has a red Wand counter on it, Boomstick Instructor has “, , Remove a Wand counter from a creature: That Wand counter deals 3 damage to target creature or player.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
“THIS IS YOUR BOOMSTICK! THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT, BUT THIS ONE IS YOURS!...”
3/4
Yes, counters now have color.
EDIT:
Ok, have something else:
Metastrength Sliver Legendary Creature--Sliver Metastrength Sliver enters the battlefield with a counter on it of a randomly chosen type. Sliver creatures you control get +1/+1 for each counter type that are on players, permanents, and cards in all zones. 3/3

Of course Daij has the final say, but my understanding was that we had to use the new concept of keyword counters, which have intrinsic values. E.g. you put a flying counter on a creature, it now has flying. A wand counter only has an effect as long a card tells you it has an effect. Very few pre-existing counters in Magic (before Ikoria) had intrinsic value. I can't even call to mind anything other than the p/t changing ones.
Reading the challenge, I'm not sure how strict it's meant to be in this regard.

whew deathtouch I guess fun fact, almost submitted this as a warlock with soldier in the name also yes I know soldier isn't really used on printed creatures and more on tokens but I am against that and don't really care either so here it is edit: the above thing about soldiers not being printed is wrong on my end. Ignore that - soldiers all around!

@ gurfafflekins: Never heard about Soldiers not being used much anymore - do you have a source for this? Ikoria alone just brought us eleven new Soldier creatures after all.. @ sdfkjgh: No, sorry - this challenge really is about ability counters the way Ikoria uses them (even if you are allowed to add additional abilities to the rooster like the defender counters already used above).

Daij_DjanNo source, I thought I remembered someone telling me that from my time playing a Battle Boards character who did soldiers. But with 11 soldiers on Ikoria, I’d wager I’m wrong! My bad. inferno390 One entry per player, yup

How do we feel about Un-cards? Because I'm feeling Un-cards. I take no responsibility for death due to extreme punnage caused by the mere existence of this card.

Beon, Son of Odric Legendary Creature - Human Soldier Whenever a creature with flying enters the battlefield under your control, you may put a flying counter on target creature. The same it true for first strike, double strike, deathtouch, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance. 3/3

KingGutty: You forgot the "a" before lifelink counter. Also, you remove counters from permanents. You can find the fonts somewehre in the MSE files in a zip called beleren fonts or similar. Makes the cards look way more appealing

Flo00 I did assume it to just be a coincidence, but it's funny how close they are with the flavor and everything. I tend to do the same thing when designing for CotW. Read challenge, get mine done, then look at what everyone else came up with. Unless I'm drawing a blank on a specific prompt, then I might check for inspiration.

@fabuloussunbro you've got a mistake in the end of your reminder text "...from each creature with graft creature a graft counter onto it."

I also am going to point out an issue with this card that may not have occurred to you: You can just activate the first ability on the end step of the opponent to remove the downside. Or (I think?) Block and then use the ability on the blocking creature. Maybe add "only activate this ability during your pre-combat main phase" So it does what i think you're trying to do here?

Attachment DeletedMore or less another Spreading Seas/Aquitect's Will except: 1. It can be attached to non-lands to turn them into mana rocks, 2. It makes things Island's in addition to their other land types, and 3. It doesn't replace itself because it would be a virtually free cantrip and those are busted. My thinking is it would be used as both mana fixing, an awkward kind of mana ramp, and an Islandwalk enabler that's more difficult to remove.
