Art by anotherwanderer"Ahoy here, whippersnapper! You looking for an outrageous raid or two for fame, fortune, and Valor? Ah? I caught your ear on that last one? Well then, sit down, and and let me tell you... Outside of individual skirmishes and interactions, The Tavern serves as the place where players can gather and mount larger, more coordinated campaigns. See the old forum for examples. To start, an aspiring DM, henceforth titled the Arbiter posts a campaign idea here, seeking players to interact with. Once enough players (usually 3-4) have agreed to the campaign, they made make a campaign thread in the Battle Boards section and begins! Camapigns usually last 2-3 Rounds, though this number can be adjusted. There are three types of Campaigns: War: The original campaign! Players are split into teams of 2-3 and attempt to design cards to beat a challenge issued by the Arbiter, who rates the entries as they see fit - Players gain Valor each time they are rated. The winning team is the one that fulfills the conditions of the DM (usually highest total rating, but can be something else like "most creatures killed") and they usually are awarded a Trophy that can be purely cosmetic or have a small ingame perk of its own. See the respective Trophies section. Horde: Similar to the unofficial format of the same name, Hordes pit you against waves of enemies, likely in a treacherous quest to defend a town, venture into a dungeon, or satisfy some sort of bloodthrist-quenching adventure! The process is mostly the same as a War, except every player is on the same team trying to fulfill the quest. However, only one may stand! The only player winning a Trophy is the one that fulfilled the Arbiter's conditions the best (again, usually highest total rating) over the course of the campaign. So will you play nice with your fellow designers as a team, or succumb to more cutthroat designs in the pursuit of a reward? It's all up to you. Location: A Location is a slightly different type of thread, representing some sort of area or Plane that people gather at for various reasons. The Location must also have a defined Boon/Curse, which is an additional positive or negative quality that can modify how cards are designed there. For example, "Creature cards can be designed as if your CMC was 3 mana higher." This restriction can be as complex or as simple as you wish - for example, if you wish to design a "Ruler system" where the current player that last got an 8/10 on a card gets an additional bonus effect, you may do so. Locations are generally free-for-alls and it is up to their participants to respect and dispute judging as required. To prevent Location spam, each player may only have one Location thread at a time. Rating System:At the end of either a War or Horde event, each player rates the arbiter (10 x number of rounds) ÷ number of participants, rounded off to the nearest whole number. Arbiter gains that amount in Score and Valor. Trophies:No pain without gains. A Trophy, awarded as a result of a War or Horde, can be designed to give a beneficial effect to the winning player in question. The trophy must generally adhere to the following design restrictions: 1) The broader/more general purpose the effect, the weaker it must be. Creating a 0/1 defender is fine, for example, creating a 5/5 Kronch is not. 2) Conversely, the more specific the trophy's restrictions add, the more doodads you can add to it. " You may design Hursar planeswalkers as though your CMC was 7 and your color mastery included " for example 3) Instead of granting an effect, the Trophy-giver may instead design a Signature Spellbook of no more than 8 cards that acts as an additional Call for Aid set. 4) When in doubt; trophies should be "75%" of a perk. For example "Grants City's Blessing" is not okay but "City's Blessing but only usable on artifact creatures" is. 5) Lastly, note that Trophies can have no effect and be purely cosmetic if you wish it to be that way.

Interesting that a Location is being founded before a War has happened, I look forward to seeing how this paints the medium for any future campaigns. Go for it, fluffy!

ZephyrPhantom Suggesting a new location: "Ah, welcome, welcome! Pardon the dingy outdoors - the wealth in Tember City just moves so quickly! What will your pleasure be? Strawberry? Roses? Blood? Ashes? Ah, sorry - we have to ask. We get all kinds. Now, before you have your dessert, would you like to hire the services of one of our fine poison tasters?"A small ice-cream shop in the middle of Tember City, Abdak's Honest Ice Parlor is possibly one of the best places to get a frozen treat in the multiverse. The ices are to die for (unless you pick the wrong ones, in which case you might just die - not everyone can eat an Arsenic Ice), the room is comfortable, and the staff is discrete. It's no wonder that it's a hotspot for gossip - spend enough time there and you'll learn the strangest little secrets... Boon: Cards that cause players to draw or discard cards cost less to create. Curse: Creature and Planeswalker cards cost more to create. Current Ruler: None
It's related to something that cyberchronometer , cajun , and I are doing. Ignore the thread I already started - I did a dumb.

If I might suggest something: "maybe the location owner hides their ratings for both parties until each person has replied -> whoever has the higher score claims control of the location". IMO it gives an additional competition aspect while allowing for a neutral third-party to keep things fair.

Lady Mapi - No worries on that thread; if you could get 2 other players to support its creation that'd be cool, though, be it in-character, out of character, or otherwise. The way I understand this works (and the way it makes sense to me) is that when the Location is empty, people attack it, the owner rates, if the card's good enough the attacker gets to rule. When the Location has a ruler, someone attacks the ruler, the ruler defends, both rate each other just like in regular combat, but the owner also rates the attacker's card and confers the crown depending on their opinion. I do have a question, though: do the people involved get Valor from this? Don't think it was in the rules, could've missed it though. Fleur / fluffydeathbringer - Since we're basically all discussing how Locations work I'll reply to you both here: 1) Valor from regular combat only I think save for an exception - see 3) 2) I think hiding ratings and having the higher one result in new Ruler is a good idea, but also see 3) 3) What if only the winner of a fight at a location got extra Valor? That would incentivize combat out of Wars (and seeing as Locations are popping up faster than Wars, I think having them function separately from the War/Horde system is ideal.)

Does " cards cost less" mean we can design one beyond our cmc limit or that they are graded as if they costed one more? I'm confused as to what that means

Former. fluffydeathbringer yeah it does seem a bit more win-more. Maybe make it just 1 bonus Valor then?

The Book
One night, a planeswalker arrives in the tavern at the Arena. She leaves a note on the job listing board and leaves. Although the paper is worn and the ink washed out, reading the paper should be effortless - there's a Glyph of Legibility on it. When you touch the paper, it attempts to speak in your head. It talks about a task of some sort involving a book.
Dearest reader,
I'd like to enlist your help in retrieving a book from a small pocket in time. You will be paid handsomely in gold and riches and possibly a trinket or two or three, but I will not compensate you for any injuries that you might acquire along the way. If you're interested, meet me here in the tavern and we'll rendezvous at Valdheim afterwards.
Despite the Glyph, the location listed on the next line shifts constantly. You see Valdheim, Kassova, Scendri, Mious and several other planes that most certainly are not Valdheim.
The rest of the paper is blank. It's just a space to sign up - I can have up to 7 people.
Participants: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

So yeah, Prince Alastor of Alvosi has been a wee bit kidnapped by Lindri's troops and the Kingdom is pissed. Anyone up for either a war between Lindri supporting players and people going to the rescue, or just a Horde with rescuers beating down Lindri's troops to save Alastor? If so, please specify which. Just assume one of the members of the Lindri hate squad, so either Heldra, Hyle, Rekal, or one of the High Builders, contacted you about this if you're rescuing him. I can add additional details about that if you want. Up to, like, I want to say 6 people, why not.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
EDIT - Lindri herself will not be there btw

Either Karina or one of Saia's lackeys will join the party (mostly dependent on if Book joins as well)
apparently i was misinformed and Karina can't tag along.

(Note: You don't have to spend any valor to partake in this horde)At the tavern is a notice board, and on that notice board are two interesting looking advertisements. Both seem holographic in nature, and the first, much nicer looking one seems to be an advertisement. Upon touching the parchment, a projection of a beautiful garden and palace appear in front of you.An audio message starts playing:"Hello! Are you tired, beat, and need to be swept off of your feet? What better than a vacation to a wonderful garden among another plane that's only accessible via a special planeswalking steam train! It's only 100 valor a ticket, and this garden will blow Eden's pretentious little tree out of the water! Sign up today!"And, almost as an afterthought, a disclaimer appears: "You need a spark to safely be on board the train." There's also a quick and easy button to tap that'll automatically reserve your spot on the luxury steam train.Meanwhile, the second poster resembles that of a wanted criminal's poster.
(Illus. John Su) Touching the image of the man reveals a holographic projection of what seems to be an energy being's head. Beneath it it lists some of the charges:"- Murder- Theft- Arson- Rudeness- Disturbing the peace"Overall, seems like a nasty sort. Oh well, it's probably fine... vacation!I can fit some people in here. Preferably at least 4 and at most 6-7, but numbers can be adjusted! 1) mrlozano 2) blueseclipse 3) pacifistwestwoman 4) [illegible scribble] 5) 6) 7)

A man approaches you. His figure seems smoky and not completely formed, and his skin is pale and stretched over high, proud cheekbones. "If you are looking for work," he murmurs so only you can hear, "I can offer you something. A darkess lies at the heart of my plane, and I ask that you help my people fight against it. Something grows..."
Taking signups for a Horde. Note that there might be some interesting and a tad bit complex world mechanics for this. Will reveal them at the time of the horde start.
