pacifistwestwoman The depths were disturbed by something unnatural. This would not do. Kadri's eyes flicked across the water, attempting to follow the signs of whatever had chosen to prowl these waters, especially so close to her vessel. The odd movement of the waves, the feel of the water around the ship. It felt... "Meatsacks to the deck! Harpoons at the ready! Get moving you dead men walking!" She yelled out to her crew, many of them already at work around the ship, but the slew of orders inspiring more movement in their undead bodies. Below the deck, the sound of shuffling became apparent, before a hatch opened, and a small group of zombies, likewise pirates, and wielding a set of harpoons, made their way to the top deck. "Eyes on the water! Keep those harpoons ready. Keep the sails in the wind! And get us out of these waters!" She grimaced as she gave the order, knowing full well this was not a fight she should have ended up in the first place. Her hand grasped the spoke of the wheel with a deadman's grip as she spun, with the intent to take the ship away from the shore. The next few moments would tell how well this would work. {Response Card - Departed Diver} Departed Diver - Creature - Zombie Ward Whenever Departed Diver attacks, draw a card. 1/3 Darkbolt: Neat. 8/10. This is in line with Dreadbore and isn't too controversial. Departed Diver: 8/10. I dunno why, but it feels too busy. The yelling and shuffling attracted the attention of the woman on the cliff, who paused her assault on the water to look for the source of the sound, finding the Crownwell, though too far away to make out its crew or captain. The creature, unfortunately, saw the break in the attack as an opportunity to escape, and began swimming away, towards the Crownwell. The woman jumped from the cliff, and slowly floated towards the rocks below, trying to follow the beast. Settlements by the sea are excellent for trade, so long as there's water and goods flowing; on one colder day, Lettie walks along the shore, checking for ice, and sights the Crownwell at the horizon. She stares for a moment, feeling as though she could be a mother showing an agreeable young child the sail ships, and laughs. Then, once her mirth has passed, she decides that a ship of this size with armaments is by default her business.
Some make arduous journeys by foot, others are aided by aether tunnels, but they all trickle to the coast: mercenaries, readied as garrison, in what settlements or ransacked ruins thereof may remain. They do not carry a unifying insignia or banner, but someone with experience might notice that for the ongoing problem of raids, the arrival of these privateers is all too uniform, near-simultaneous.Company Commander Creature — Human Soldier Whenever Company Commander attacks, you may sacrifice a non-Soldier permanent. If you do, create a 1/1 black Soldier creature token. 3/2

test Suspicious. Certainly. An issue? Potentially. Difficult to solve? Hardly. The ship continued to hover out on the water, but the shore was less willing to remain so neutral to the assembled masses. It started with a few strong waves, lapping at the mercenaries boots, before suddenly a practical tentacle of saltspray pummeled the beach, likely to scatter any who had managed to avoid the attack, and crush anyone who hadn't been so lucky. The ship's heading began to shift as the assault on the beach began in earnest, not with weapons fire, but with the elements, a hungry, frothing tide versus mere men, women, and others. That black sailed vessel was coming towards the beach now, and whatever else is might have in store for the coastal defenders. With X equal to 4. Company Commander: Cool. 9/10. I don't have much else to add.

That black sailed vessel was coming towards the beach now, and whatever else is might have in store for the coastal defenders. With X equal to 4. There is little such a disordered and mundane group can do against a force that can not be killed. There are some immediate casualties, and those who survive move further inland to await any landings. Lettie watches at a distance further down the coast and swiftly comes to a conclusion. She knows from experience that traditional arms fare poorly against magic of this scale. At the very least, there can be nothing done to impede any landings, and no method for approaching the ship itself for a decisive blow. The best likely outcome would be stalemate. More likely would be inevitable defeat.
She had expected this of course; she had already calculated her ledgers with the assumption that many of these mercenary commissions would not be paid in full. The damage to the port would affect her indirectly still, but there were still many ways this could be turned to an advantage, if an expensive one. Lettie briefly planeswalks into the settlement to warn her informants. "The rest of our work will be easier the more of this you see for yourself, but make no mistake; you will have to flee this place before the day has ended." There is no direct intervention in the conflict for now; it may be a regular raid, if with a somewhat higher density of martial combatants than usual, and fearful gazes which keep a cautious distance.
Watchful Grazier Creature — Human Scout Flash When Watchful Grazier enters the battlefield, draw a card.
0/2
Stir the Seas — This is definitely a novel effect, which I appreciate, and a good response, given you can strike at least 3 tokens with it. Not great scaling on the X, but most relevant targets don't have high power anyway (e.g. strikebreaker/pyromancer) 9/10

The creature's size is difficult to gauge specifically, though it is definitely smaller than the Crownwell. The woman, unwatched by Kadri, has run out of rocks to jump across, leaving the beast equidistant between Crownwell and the woman. test The waves don't relent their assault on the shoreline, but they make no further attempts to follow the combatants into the mainland, simply denying them the ability to take space between land and sea. A short rout was enough, for the moment, and it allowed some of the collected mercenaries to gather themselves for what came next. Too little time, as it might turn out. Between the froth on the water and the aural warfare of the crashing waves, the next stage of the counter-assault began without warning, the waves splitting between their attack on the shore as undead marines began to rush out from the waters, unimpeded by the weight of the sea and charging past the coastline. Swords, pikes, hatchets, anything they had brought with them held forward as they prepared to lay waste to the enemy and the settlement. Following the map leads to a shallow cave where a decent size chest sat in the open, provided you knew what you were looking for. A skeleton was draped over the unlocked chest. Beside the skeleton lay a sword and shield. Carved in them and imprinted on the gold coins within the chest were an unusual script. Should the planeswalkers try to read it, they will recognize that they are words, but they are unable to read them, and would only be met with headaches the longer they tried to understand it. The spies, as soon as they see the flashes of weapons approaching, run further inland as well. The mercenary garrison that hasn't been swept away by the waves holds defensive positions in buildings and alleys, but disorganized and mortal as they are, will surely fall in time. Worse still, the aggressor seems to be a practitioner of necromancy, Wormwood notes. In retrospect, the mercenaries were an unwise inclusion for this plot—but even they may be turned to an advantage.
At some points, the marines may kick down a door, only to be met with an explosion of acid fumes, or turn a corner only to be plunged into darkness by miasma black as starless night, for unseen maws to sink their fangs into rotten flesh. This interference is sporadic, unpredictable, and not nearly sufficient to turn the tide of the battle. Meanwhile, unhindered by the grasp of miasma or the marines, Wormwood seeks out the corpses of her mercenaries, soon to be the pawns of the captain, and treats them in preparation for their new lives. Some receive spare buttons, hidden in their pockets. Others have their prized weapons exchanged for ones of poorer quality, either rusting or infected with defects more insidious. Some corpses are bestowed the most enticing gift of all: unsealed missives, kept next to their stopped hearts.
When the treatment is finished, Wormwood ensures that her spies have escaped, before abandoning her hired fools to their fate.
Lettie has spent 100 valor to unlock Artificer. Blighted Blade Artifact — Equipment Equipped creature gets +2/+0. Whenever equipped creature dies, each opponent loses 2 life.
Equip Grasp of the Awakened — People very often meme about these kinds of designs as being black creature counterspells. test The settlement's fate is sealed within the hour, the horde from beneath the waves running out of bodies to field only as the defenses, both mundane and arcane, had fought their last. Smoke billowed into the air, the occasional stray fire turning into a blaze that was left unperturbed by the marauding undead. There would be survivors, undoubtedly, some found, and dragged from their homes or their hiding spaces. Others hidden away, trying desperately not to be detected by the relentless dead, managing to only peak at the ensuing chaos. Undead roving the streets, valuables dragged out from homes, followed by bodies, and the cries of death and occasional last feats of resistance on the air. Some would get a glimpse at a figure walking more lively-like than the undead army. A woman, sword at her side, paler than ash, and only one full arm to whatever her name was. The dead would part in her presence, or follow behind at some unheard command, or even go about their business, but none dared perturb her. Few sights of her would be had, before the last survivors either fled, or succumbed to their wounds... - This had been a coastal settlement, but trade goods meant nothing when there was no one to ply them too. Material wealth, metals, gemstones, or anything of a more cryptic nature were few, and in numbers not worthy of a truly impressive haul. It was to be expected, given the lack of naval interest on this world, but that didn't mean there weren't other rewards to be had. Kadri looked away from the meager collection that had been gathered to the lines of corpses, now dragged and placed centrally within the settlement. Many were battered, some had lost a limb in the struggle, and all were dirty with blood, sand, or the contents of their innards by the time they had passed on. At least fifty men and women with bodies still in decent shape, and not liable to fall apart if she stood them up. Not all of them were from here either. Kadri made a noise to herself, a sour mix of amusement and annoyance. Private garrisons were one thing, but if they'd been rich enough to pay for one, where was the wealth to back it? Certainly not in her pocket, more likely that they had come in anticipation of her, and quite quickly at that. Someone of means had seen her coming. It could wait until later. She drew her sword, holding it out above the display of bodies, and began speaking, no, incanting, her voice filling out the ruins of the settlement. The struggling walls seemed to shiver in her presence, and the undead around her, for once, showed signs of discomfort, idling away or clutching at their weapons and tools. "Damned men and women of these unclaimed shores. Your souls are forfeit, but your bodies may yet feast on the wealth of this world." "I call on the Wicked Sisters, to mend your broken flesh. So that your bodies may yet surveil the depths and not break in my service." "I call on the Black Furnace, to bring life where there is none, and bid your bodies to animate at my orders." "And last I call on the His Will from Below, to snare you to my service alone, and ensure the loyalty of skin that does not think."Her voice shook the settlement as the force of her words began to take hold upon the bodies in front of her. Small hints of puppetry began to shake the slacked joints of the corpses. Fingers twitched, legs kicked, and suddenly, as one, raucous unit, the dead cried out their first words of undeath, a nightmarish cry of surprise and bestial growl, the spell nearing completion, and the new undead soon to be bid to walk once more. "Rise, and be members of the crew of Kadri Blueswale, your master till the world erodes your form!"
- The undead slowly filed out from the settlement, taking whatever valuables they had plundered with them. Their captain, quickly as she had appeared, left with the rest of them, and the vessel that had precipitated the attack soon disappeared with them, leaving only ruins and little for the crows. Blighted Blade: I like this common, it's got fun cycle potential and is overall simple and elegant. 8/10

Blighted Blade: I like this common, it's got fun cycle potential and is overall simple and elegant. 8/10 The Crownwell could be likened to a beast whose only purpose is to gorge itself on life and wealth; one easily poisoned, for how carelessly its captain has brought on the new undead and their weapons. An unusual disease has infected the Crownwell, but its effects will not be noticeable for several days—perhaps at her next battle, Kadri will realize that something is terribly wrong. Noxious Recruitment — This seems to be about right, and an appropriate way to hamper long-term death trigger strategies. Though it's necessary for it to be a response, the card itself seems to be an unlikely design in most cases, since it cannibalizes some of black's more popular strategies, making it closer to very expensive hate outside of limited, where it does shine. 9/10

"Don't try and gut the thing till you see whatever ghastly maw it greets you with." {Response Card - Darksea Harpooner} Darksea Harpooner Creature - Human Pirate Flash When Darksea Harpooner enters the battlefield, tap target creature an opponent controls until Darksea Harpooner leaves the battlefield. “Stay still!”[2/3] Proving Leviathan: 7/10. I like the cost of returning the island, but I think the returning three creatures is a bit much for this effect. I think two would be enough, personally. Darksea Harpooner: 7/10. I like the idea of having a rare Clausterphobia with flash, I don't like that it's on a creature. The sea churns as the creature moves to breach the surface, revealing a smug eye. The creature pushes itself further out of the water, showcasing its large dark body that threatens to land either on or near the Crownwell. Vague shouting can be heard from the woman on the shore, and a red crackling light can be seen, illuminating her: she's dressed in light armor, aiming a bow and drawing an arrow against the beast. Leviathan's Eye Artifact : Add . , , Sacrifice ~: Return target creature to its owner's hand.

pacifistwestwoman There was no time for distractions. Beasts such as this preyed on inaction, and Kadri was never one to be indecisive. There was a monster threatening her ship, and she was going to cull it from her list of problems. "Attack!" she yelled with the grace of a hoarse-harpy and the fury of a bombshell, her hand slamming on the railing as her words rung out into the air. Spears, harpoons, and other long-sharp implements of death were hurled in a volley into the water, at least a dozen or so aiming for the beast, hoping to strike at its hide beneath the water, or more audaciously, that bright, taunting eye that peered from below. The rest of the crew not hunting the white whale were busy with other preparations, should the case be that the beast was not skewered to death quite so easily. {Response Card - Spell Refractor} Spell Refractor Creature Human Wizard Flash When Spell Refractor enters the battlefield, change the target of target spell or ability to Spell Refractor. [2/1] - Changing the target of Leviathan's eye to itself. - Leviathan's Eye: 8/10. Solid rock with a neat upside for the color. Would love to see a full cycle of these.

testMeanwhile, on the deck of the Crownwell...The usual buzz of activity that a dead man crew could channel was at the moment, being directed to throwing various cargo, weapons, and tools overboard, every few minutes marked by a particularly impactful splash as the contained hit the waves below. While usually silent in their labors, (What stories could dead man tell anyway?), the mood aboard the rogue vessel was grim, and their resident necromancer-captain was not enthused at the site in front of her. It had started with the weapons. A cracked blade here, a dull edge there, but soon the entire stock of weapons had rapidly begun to disintegrate. Even two of the main cannons had been afflicted before Kadri ordered the current state of affairs, begrudgingly even tossing her own sword into the loose piles of cutlasses and hand-weapons at the center of the deck. Corrosion and rust had always been threats at sea, but something like this smelled of sabotage, and Kadri was not one to let such things go without reprisal...The question was how. Though Kadri had some manner of observation over most of her crew, there were a number of excursions that could have been an ample opportunity for someone clever enough to poison her stock. Beyond forcing every crew member to take a dive in salt water and soak for a good part of an hour, there was little else she could do to stop the spread of...whatever it was, that had destroyed much of the armory. It was clever work, someone skilled to make it such an effective corrosive agent, but even more clever to sneak it onto her vessel without her noticing. Her meager efforts might not even be enough, and the whole crew could be walking agents of whatever stuff that had been put onto her vessel...Another splash upon the water. A particularly heavy crate of spare swords, and Kadri stamped her foot in frustration. Damn the sea. Damn the conquest. She'd been slighted, and she was going to make her unknown adversary pay for this. In silver or blood. Whichever came first, and whichever she would enjoy the most. Yet another crate hit the water below, and Kadri scoffed, turning to return to the captain's wheel. Whoever had made their move, it was time for them to get what they were due...

At worst it's a fun counterspell. A bright flash of lightning illuminated the leviathan, granting the crew a greater opportunity to aim. Their harpoons struck the beast, some in its hide, two in its eye. It fell with a scream into the dark waters below, rocking the Crownwell, but not dangerously. The woman could be seen on the rocks below, slowly hopping across them back towards the coast.

cajun "Nothing of importance," Kadri stated, kneeling down to look at the contents of the chest, "it's gold, surprising as that might be to find out in the middle of nowhere, but I'm not of the mind to leave this where it's been found."
She stands up again, looking down to Zweili. "Take whatever you think is a tenth. I'm not in a mood to cut coins and bark over shavings and sweats."Cursed CoinArtifact - Treasure You may have Cursed Coin enter the battlefield under an opponent’s control. When Cursed Coin enters the battlefield, you lose 2 life. , Sacrifice Cursed Coin: Add one mana of any color. Then if this card is in a graveyard, return it to its owner’s hand. Zweil sniffs at the treasure for a moment, then splits off precisely a tenth and piles it into his bag, as well as the strange glyphed artifacts.
"It's bena pleasure workin' wit' ya," Zweil grins as he hefts his bag back into place. "I'll be around here a bit if you find ya need some a my particular talents on board." Cursed Coin - missing a mana cost, and AA cost should probably just bounce it. is neat depending on the cost 7/10

"A lonely soul on a beach at dawn, the steadfast warrior wandered on." --Shining Tale of Alamay, Vol II They find little to comfort their journey, save for the sound of waves crashing against the beach as they venture along. A soul alone is rarely a soul at ease, even if the path ahead was clear to the warrior. However, some small solace might find its place. The compass was beginning to wobble, even as it pointed in the same direction, perhaps she was nearing it? And if she had found this, would there be others as well? Fool’s Journey Instant Destroy target creature that’s attacking or blocking alone. Soul Alone: A weird exalted case, this is potentially a blowout late game, and I'm unsure how to consider that. Probably fine, I just don't think this plays well. 5/10

He’ll lead you in the right misdirection.[2/2] Glean from Precedent: Neat. I think this is weird that at base it only draws you one, which is a bit feels bad for a double blue divination cost, and the ceiling on that scry and mill is very high. 6/10

"A field researcher. Who might you be? Noticing Altani's nervousness, Mira taps into a touch of eldritch magic in order to protect either of them in case things go south. After all, she knew well that she would be unlikely to win in a fight without resorting to... other means she would rather not think about. Abhorrent Return Instant Devoid (This card has no color.)
Exile target creature card from your graveyard. You may cast that card from exile until the beginning of your next end step. If it's colorless, it costs up to less to cast. Murkway Guide: Sweet signpost. 10/10.

pacifistwestwoman The situation was strange, and rather like that of a setup. Given the circumstances of how Atlani had come to be here, it stood to reason however that the one opposite of her was here under similar circumstances. Caution was, for the moment, a correct response, and they might have happily continued their conversation in peace... Were it not for the fact that between them, the tide had begun to retreat, specifically in the narrow bit of coastline that stood between them. The water pulled further and further back, soon forming a clear delineation between the sea on Atalani's side and the sea on the stranger's side. Caution was prudent indeed... Volition Miser Human Warlock Untapped creatures get -1/-0. Whenever a creature you control is blocked, if a creature blocking it has power 0 or less, destroy that blocking creature. [2/2] Conjure: Hysterical Blindness. Presuming your creatures remained untapped after a theoretical attack, they might find it difficult to block successfully Rearguard Felidar: Yeah this is a typical effect for a white card, notably for being uncommon for it to come down early on, unlike say, Angel of the Dawn. 7/10. - Fleur The waves parted, though only to a point a few dozen feet from the shore, leaving both with the site of an exposed floor of the sand beneath the waves. The display did not end there however, as some...mass of material emerged from behind the water where the opening ended, slowly walking up towards the shore. It would stop, eventually, once it was at the edge of the water. It was clearer at this distance, some humanoid adjacent shape formed from a mix of sediment and coral, waiting expectantly it seemed between the two of them. Both compasses would point towards the creature, and seemed to indicate this thing was involved with their reason for being summoned here. Coral Golem Artifact Creature - Golem Coral Golem enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it. , Remove a +1/+1 counter from Coral Golem: Add one mana of any color. [2/2] Abhorrent Return: Neat as a steal and spot removal from the grave, it's quite versatile and doesn't have any particular issues I can think of. 9/10
