Stoneforged Paladin: if Seraph of the Suns can exist as an uncommon this definitely is fine. I like it a lot, there's just a minor detail (not gonna subtract points for it though) that all Paladins are Knights rather than Soldiers. 9.5/10, and I authorize you to round it up to a 10/10 .
"Only a fool makes fun of someone who controls the very earth he stands on" says Aylin huffing at the taunt. As her hands begin shaking, she points them at the soldier's feet, and the ground begins to cover his legs up to the knee and dragging him down.
Swallowing Gravel Land : Add . , , Sacrifice ~: Each attacking creature without flying gets -1/-1 until end of turn. Watch your step...
Thank you for taking into consideration my annoyance with .5's, I'll be sure to give you a .235 score
The soldier looked down and saw the stone encircling his legs. He took his spear and smashed the head against the rocks and broke his left leg free. Before following suit with the right leg, his speartip glowed white and when the rocks shattered, smoke rose from the remains. "Something tells me I'll try my -" before he could finish, the spear shot a sudden ray of red light in a beam directly at Aylin, making Aiden take a couple steps back.
Tactician's Geist Creature - Spirit Flying When ~ enters the battlefield, creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn. "Every great tactician has a second opinion. Mine just happens to be my own." - Grand tactician Robin 2/2
Swallowing Gravel: Could probably see it at common but good design. Although I guess if it was common it would probably etb'd tapped. So gonna give you that 10/10.
Aylin has barely enough time to summon a rock barrier before her, and the explosion of the beam contacting it sends her back a few steps. "You idiot!" she screams "I thought you were a puny idiot, but apparently you have no problem in attempting to kills someone!" As she speaks, rocks begin to levitate around her head. With a snap of her fingers, the stones shoot at Aiden.
Vindictive Rage Instant ~ deals 3 damage to target creature that dealt damage this turn. "Give me an excuse to hurt you..."
Tactician's Geist: 2/2 fliers for can usually get a small bonus but this one feels a bit stronger, so I would make this a 2/1. 8/10.
The soldier wasn't exactly sure how he'd block multiple stones, but luckily he didn't have to. He breathed a small sigh of relief as the random woman stepped in front of the way. "O-okay. And uh, sorry Aylin, the beam is new. Never done that one before." he said, standing where he was. He willed his spear to stop glowing and shaking, the damn thing. That spear the prickfox left him must have been some weird thing absorbed in his weapon now... huh. "And I mean, I didn't think she was going to kill me anyway?" he said with a hint of question in his voice.
Protected Envoy Creature - Rhino Soldier Lifelink Protection from red (This creature can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything red.) 3/3
Vindictive Rage: I've played with this same and similar vengeance mechanics before and this works, and I like the play on bolt. 10/10.
Tempered by Blood: Fine, simple, elegant although I have a hunch this should cost just to stay on the safe side. 8/10. Protected Envoy: super cool common, was gonna comment on how it could affor a pro-black until I realized it wouldn't work with Cajun's assistance that way (silly me). 9/10.
Aylin glares at the newcomer. "Who the hell are you and who do you think you are to meddle in what is clearly not your business?!" she spurts violently "This man tried to kill me! I was just defending myself! And unlike him, I'm not a killer... I was just planning on scaring him with the pain and punish his insolence!" You did kill him... says a taunting voice inside Aylin's head, making her eye twitch. He deserved it... she mentally retaliates And besides, it was an accident! You can't fool yourself, child, you know you would've done it willingly if you'd had the chance... speaks the voice once more. HE DESERVED IT!!!!!! How she managed to not scream out loud that last thought, Aylin doesn't know, but Aiden's words bring her back to reality. "O-okay. And uh, sorry Aylin, the beam is new. Never done that one before." "You think you can just make some shit up and I'll believe you? Don't patronize me!" she says, then sighs to calm herself down "No, that would be something smart to do, you're too stupid to try to murder me and make it seem like an accident... Whatever the case I'm done with you, you're no longer useful to me for training... thanks I guess." She begins to leave, then turns towars Reyshia and raises her hand while showing her the middle finger (a pretty common insult back in her homeworld). "Next time stay out of my business and let me do my thing, or at least ask before choosing sides..."
Injured Pride Instant ~ deals 1 damage to target creature. That creature attacks each combat this turn if able. "Are you gonna sit there watching or are you gonna do something about this?"
Aiden watched, scratching the back of his head in confusion. "Well that was... interesting. You called it when you called her a psycho..." he muttered. He was a little surprised at his own words. But she did call him an idiot like 5 times, so it was fair(?). "She is kind of right though - pretty sure that beam tried to kill her. Honestly wasn't under my control though." he said. His mind barely even registered her final remarks aside from the insults. Being dopey has it's ups and downs.
Oblivious Vanguard Creature - Human Soldier Whenever ~ attacks, it gets +0/+2 until end of turn. "Oh, am I bleeding? Oops." 2/2
Injured Pride: I like the instigation effect. I think it's a nice upgrade from sorcery from Sparkjolt at instant speed. I'm sick of giving you 10's but I don't really have a choice unless I randomly deduct points for no reason so 4/10. I'm kidding, 10/10.
"Don't beat yourself up over it." I said with a sad smile. "Aylin's always rushing into things and getting people hurt in her arrogance. I've gotten a lot more mindful about that with the little one running around now..."I trailed off, remembering his bloodline. "Just, keep an eye out for that one. Never know when she'll do something to get us all killed."
As I left, that final branch of the soldier's family tree still lingered in my head.
Oblivious Vanguard is a strictly worse Those Who Serve, I'd give it a +1/+0 or +0/+1 and maybe include the bonus to when it blocks as well, maybe make it a "+0/+2 as long as it's untapped" instead. This card looks pretty underwhelming as-is. 6/10.
"Ms. Oblay, it's you out there isn't it?" Aiden shouted to the sky. "I don't really know what's going on, but... well, with all due respect ma'am, I think we’re going to have to fight. And even if I'm no planeswalker, and I don't have any kind of magic on my side, you won't stop me easily." Well, he did have a few kinds of magic on his side, even if he still couldn't see them. "I've had to fight against Kirino before. She tricks your mind and your eyes. If you see something that doesn't make sense, just remember: That means she's scared of us."
Aiden looked back at Karina. As he listened to her speak, he wondered if he should try and get her out of here... but, something told him no. Something told him she was an integral part to all this. Or, at least, could be.
"Hopefully she's not too scared. I... we know, what it's like to be lost and alone. Maybe she just needs someone to help her on her way, you know?"
Friendly Soldier Creature - Human Soldier Spells that target ~ cost less to cast. 2/2
Calming Thoughts: A better Diplomatic Immunity for 1 more mana. And perfectly flavorful and everything. 10/10.
The soldier watches the feathers. "What the-- woah!" he managed to lift his spear shaft in time to knock away the talons, stepping back away from it. "Okay, this is a new one. What's your deal?" he asked the wall of feathers. He stood firmly where he was.
Reflexive Soldier Creature - Cat Soldier , sacrifice ~: You gain 2 life. 1/2
Edit: I realize this card isn't really a response so I dun goofed. If you wanna let me Call to Aid it'll be Become Immense, if not, hit me with that sweet, sweet 0.
Sudden Strike: Sandblast and Dragon's Presence say this should deal 5, but at definitely not worth it really. Maybe just bump to uncommon for limited? 9.5/10, but I hate .5's so have a 10/10.
Last Edit: Feb 21, 2019 22:34:42 GMT by gurfafflekins: I'm a smarticle
The soldier raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Right, I forgot how this place worked. Been so long since anyone really new's come around here." he says, still standing tall and steady. He willed his spear to not shoot a beam of any color this time around, somehow communicating with the spirits inside of it. Wait, how did he - "Well, I'm down for a challenge. Show me what you got."
Sunspear Overseer Creature - Human Soldier Lifelink Whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield, if it wasn't cast, it's owner shuffles it into their library. "Hey, Aiden, no cheating! Do you want to lose dessert again?" - Overseer Karla, training day 7 3/3
Dusk Entrance: I like it. A nice recursion that prevents other recursion without an in between step. It's a step after Dread Return and before Goryo's Vengeance. 10/10. it almost bothers me to give two 10's in a row
The harpy smiles and dives forward towards the soldier and his spear. She gets as low as his knees then dives up towards him with an elbow. Her right leg swipes with this feint to throw Aiden off balance.
Warrior's Dance Instant ::Uncommon:: Choose one or both :: Target attacking or blocking creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. :: Target attacking or blocking creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn. The battlefield is a stage for two.
A very nice reanimation house and turns flicker into removal. funny flavour text. It feels like a good mid range uncommon in a set with undying or antoher similar mechanic. could see this if we ever go back into alara. 10/10 the double white is what keeps it 10 instead of a 9
Post by gurfafflekins on Feb 22, 2019 18:49:40 GMT
The soldier really is confused by the fighting style of this thing. As he watches it dive and then come at him with an elbow - WHACK. He's hit straight in the chin, causing him to stumble back, fall over, and roll into a standing position. That was a heavy one too... should've probably broken his jaw, before he speaks: "Ow. Good hit, good hit. Alright, alright, come at me again." he says, standing defensively, but a few feet back from her again.
Steadfast Squire Creature - Human Soldier Protection from black , : You gain 1 life. "You shall not harm me, vile being! My sword shall cut you down where you stand!" - squire Carl, training alone 2/2
Warrior's Dance: Firstly, really cool flavor and flavor text. Secondly, I could see this at common - might be pretty annoying in limited either way too. 9/10.
"It's just like Rowboat." she agreed. "Fighting it didn't fix anything, only trying to help him did."
Aiden looked backed up at the sky, wondering what was next. Deep in his mind, he thought of his duties and past and how everything had happened so quickly. He felt a rush of adrenaline, a rush of life, a rush. Something in his head elevated itself. One step closer, he thought to himself. But to what?
Aiden has spent 300 valor for 3 skill points! Aiden has spent 3 skill points for CMC +3!
"What are you made of, steel?" The harpy eyes the man oddly as she prepares another strike. The feathers on her shoulders ruffle then solidify as she hardens her arm for a counter attack well she goes in.
Hardened Form Sorcery Target creature you control gains indestructible and vigilance until your next turn.
I like it I wish protection was around for cards like this in real magic still. In current power levels though it would probably cost or nothing on the activated so 9/10. It doesn't wow me but it is a really straightforward and positive card.
The soldier shakes his head. "What do you mean? I'm just a man, last I checked." he said, seemingly sincerely. He watched her approach, before raising his spear to block her dash attack, the wood also bearing the same unbreakable quality he seemed to possess, and instead of counter-attacking, he pushed her back, taking a few steps of his own back to disengage and create space. "Alright, good one, was ready that time though." he said.
Steadfast Trainee Creature - Human Soldier Defender Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to Steadfast Trainee. 0/3
Hardened Form: I assume meant as , overall pretty fine card. "Until your next turn" is always a grounds for memory issues but they've been doing more of those recently, albeit at higher rarity. 7/10.
A tall, pale creature at least three meters tall approaches Aiden with a solemn demeanor. It is closely followed by wisps of dark smoke that, once he stops in place, begin seeping towards the floor and covering the surrounding area. "Greetings" he speaks in a deep, hoarse smoky voice "I am Malextros..." He takes a few seconds to let the mist settle in and absorb the knowledge he needs. "Your spear" he says "It contains souls, but not just any soul: the soul of people you love... I can hear them suffering, pleading to be set free. I can bring them back to you, but I would need a favor from you in return" he says with a wicked smile that reveals his sharp teeth.
Liberation of Souls Enchantment At the beginning of your upkeep, you may exile target creature card from a graveyard. If you do, create a 1/1 white and black Spirit creature token with flying. The Orzhov can free your body of its pain, but what remains of you from the process is what they take as payment.

"Ey. I'm Emil, one of Lumen's officers. I work in the department of conservation and protection," he says, taking a bow. "I saw you fight at the Oblay incident, and was told that you would be a good person to spar against. Would you be willing to entertain this request?"
Solder Soldier Artifact Creature - Soldier CARDNAME gets +1/+1 as long as you control another Soldier or another artifact. Alloys and armies have one thing in common: both rely heavily on cohesion. 1/1
Aiden looked towards Emil, and listened to him speak. "No need to bow. Good to meet you - I am Aiden, yeah." he said, smiling warmly. "And yeah, it's always good to stay on your toes, never know when something big like that incident is just around the corner." he said, taking his spear and raising it into a defensive position. "Hopefully this won't go as poorly as the last spar I had - who knew people could manipulate the ground?"
Tinkering Pikeman Creature - Human Soldier If you control an artifact, ~ gets +0/+1 and has lifelink. "This weapon is great and all but... I think I can make it better." 1/1
Solder Soldier: First off, clever name, I like it. Secondly, I think it's a nice and simple design, but having two of these on two is kinda scary. 9/10.
Aiden watches the tall figure stride towards him. He gets up from a chair on the porch of a small shack - had he built this himself? - and clears his own throat. Wow, something felt off - even the oblivious man could see it. "And greetings to you." he said. He listened to his speech. "How... how do you know that?" he asked, clutching his spear to him. He looked at his spear. "How do I know they're even dead, and that this isn't some sort of trick?" he asked. "And even if they were dead, I'd..." his voice dropped off. His limbs are shaking from confusion and fear. The tip of his spear glew a soft white, and his limbs stilled. "I... I wouldn't want them alive again. It messes with the laws of the world." he said. Fear still gnawed at every fiber of his body, but his limbs were calm.
Magus of Rest Creature - Human Wizard When ~ enters the battlefield, exile all cards from all graveyards. If a card or token would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead. 1/3
Liberation of Souls: I've always loved Lingering Souls and this is an enchantment version. I love it. 10/10. (Even though guest system but it's still appropriate to rate it)
Magus of Rest: I have a soft spot for Magus effects, especially when they're well costed/statted. I believe it could cost , but I think it's better to stay on the safe side. 9/10.
"This is no trick" speaks Malextros completely emotionlessly "Your daughter and wife are dead, and their souls are trapped in there. You can have them back whenever you want, all you need to do is agree to my favor: just take me to the geomancer named Aylin, tell me who she is, what her strengths and weaknesses are and where I can find her, and I will give you your wife and child back. Don't you want to see them again? Don't you think they deserve to be by your side once more? Are you really going to be the kind of man who would forsake his own family when given the chance to have them back for a small favor...?" he adds with a poisonous voice.
Soulful Return Sorcery Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. You lose life equal to that card's converted mana cost. "I'd pay any price to see her again, if at least for a second..."
The soldier looked at the demonic creature. His family was dead... even though he did not trust the deal, something in his heart knew he spoke the truth. Melody and Rose were dead. His reasons for waking up in the morning, his joy, his happiness, his everything... gone. He sized up the demon once more. The ominous mist, the disgusting teeth, pale skin, not to mention the simple feel of evil. He did not trust it as far as he could throw it.
"...I don't know much about Aylin. But I do know where she might be." he says. His spear began to glow and shudder, before going silent. Gods, was he really doing this? "Is that enough for your deal?"
Bribed Envoy Creature - Rhino Soldier Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under an opponent's control, they gain 1 life. "Well, sir, it looks like we've arrived..." 5/5
(Look at it as a sort of acceptance... you gain a life, but there's still one wall left to break on Aiden)
Soulful Return: Better designed than Animate Dead objectively, so good stuff. Reanimator still iffy, and usually life's not too much of an issue especially in reanimator. Maybe costed at 4? 9/10.
Bribed Envoy: I like this idea for an undercosted white creature, I just wonder if the drawback is enough at common (closest example is Dutiful Servants, so you're having a +3/+0 boost=, I love that it's a Rhino though, and I love the name. 8/10.
Malextros's smile widens, he's already corrupted the man, triggering the evil within and feeding on it, and that evil tastes so good. Mortals will give in to their most primal instinct with the right incentive, and this one triggered Aiden's will to betray. "It's good" he says "Not good enough. I could find her by my own means with the same ease I found you and knew you contacted her... but worry not, there is still something else you can do for me that will get you your family back. I need you to go to her and distract her. Keep her in one place, that way I can ensure I get to... talk to her, without her running away. Oh, and as a reward for your cooperation... here's a small taste of what's coming your way." He snaps his fingers and a wisp of dark smoke flies towards the spear, summoning one of the souls inside it so she can speak to Aiden for a few seconds.
(Obviously letting you choose which soul comes out and how that interaction goes)
Vestige of a Past Life Sorcery As an additional cost to cast this spell, exile a creature card from your graveyard. Create a token that's a copy of a card exiled with ~, except it's a black and white Spirit with base power and toughness 1/1. It gains flying. "You're not her... but you're the closest thing to her I've got!"

With an odd, faintly melodious whir, a construct forged of strange translucent material, like metal crossed with sea glass, bounces through the air towards Aiden. It breaks off a piece of itself and both parts cast curtains of light up and down him, as though trying to read some message encoded in his skin and bones. Fragments of telepathy make it through to him, though they're clearly synthetic. Denizen... potential... cogitating...
Pulvite Monitor Artifact Creature - Construct Flying Fabricate 1 (When this creature enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on it or create a 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature token.) Servos you control have flying. 1/2
The soldier looks at the weirdly transparent thing bouncing through the sky. Okay, not the weirdest thing but still pretty weird. "Hey, uh, you alright up there?" the soldier calls out, before it washes him in light. "Uh... should I be concerned?" then it speaks in his mind and he reflexively grabs his spear and puts it in a defensive position. "And who's... inside me head?" it seems he's never even heard of the concept of telepathy, and it's completely foreign to him.
Paranoid Envoy Creature - Bird Soldier Flying Whenever an artifact enters the battlefield, you may gain 1 life. "They're following us... I know it!" 2/2
Pulvite Monitor: Seems good enough but not too good, I like the servo tribal theme. New to judging fabricate so we'll learn as we go. 10/10.
The soldier looked at the demon as he spoke. "I..." it wasn't good enough? "Well, I will not directly be involved with your... plot. I can't do that." however, the mist that rose towards him and took the shape of his dead daughter. It seemed to cry out to him, to-- he lost the willpower and his spear shone brightly, as the white light dismissed the illusion. The shape of his wife appeared in front of him, and caressed his face. "Aiden... this is not the way. You will never forgive yourself if you do this." she said. He looked in her ghostly white eyes. A tear rolled down his cheek, as he looked back at the tempter.
"I'm sorry. I can't help you." he said, wiping the tear. "You'll have to find someone else to help you."
Aaron, Crafty Squire Creature - Human Soldier Flash When ~ enters the battlefield, until end of turn whenever a creature token enters the battlefield, you may gain control of it. "So, isn't your master a little... pushy?" 3/3
Vestige of a Past Life: Name's a bit wordy, but I really like this effect. 10/10.
Last Edit: Feb 26, 2019 5:42:41 GMT by gurfafflekins: how the f*** do I spell homunculus
Aaron, Crafty Squire: First of all, given the name I guess you meant for this to be Legendary, right? XD Second of all, I just can't see creature stealing in white, even if it's limited to tokens. Maybe if it was a Containment Priest variation or said "Until end of turn, whenever a token enters the battlefield under an opponent's control, create a token that's a copy of that token" or something like that. I'm giving this a 5/10.
"Ah, it is a pity indeed" says Malextros completely emotionless "I guess I will need someone who's willing to cooperate... But don't worry, my offer still stands for as long as I remain here, only the price may increase if you come seeking a trade later on..." he replies matter-of-factly. He turns to leave, but as he does so, he adds one last thing. "Don't think of yourself as the hero who chose to do the right thing at the last minute. You're just the fool who chose to leave behind everything he could possibly want."
Guilt Creature - Elemental Incarnation Other creatures get -X/-X, where X is ~'s power. Whenever an opponent casts a spell, put a -1/-1 counter on ~. When ~ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library. 6/6
