I'm attempting to create a game format that I could see as potentially rewarding for the community. We've got some great designers here and they offer great advice in Card Clinic, but it would be neat to learn from them in other, fun ways. POLLWinners 8/12/2018: Arix 8/28/2018:The Rules1. Like other games here, the winner of a challenge will post the next challenge. A runnerup can post a challenge if the winner does not. If no one picks up the torch, a mod or myself can post one if we think it's worth keeping around to kick. 2. Challenges are posed by creating a stupidly broken card. (Broken can be underpowered OR overpowered) 3. The catch? Along with your card, you need to explain the design idea behind it, including flavor, etc... 4. The winner(s) will be determined not only by creating the best "fix" for the posed card, but also by their explanation of what they changed and why they changed it. 5. Contests last two weeks, since extra time and thought should go into making them, and responding to them. This is a bit more complex than your standard YMTC format. If it doesn't catch on, that's fine. I'm hoping it does though. Current ContestThe basic premise behind this card was a cycle of "battles", representing a back-and-forth struggle for a key location, artefact, or some other important thing. The main feel of the back-and-forth struggle is what's most important here. {Archive} So... to kick things off, for your consideration: Basic concept: Planeswalker that turns into powerful legendary. Planeswalkers are sort of a universal hate card, so the rewards for getting one to transform into something else should be high. Flavor concept: Planeswalker willingly gives up its spark to protect others. What's broken? Fairly weak planeswalker. Overpowered legendary creature. I'm not sure how many times the planeswalker would even get to the point of transforming. So, for all the power the legendary creature has, I'm not sure it would see the light of day very often. <iframe width="8.5" height="11.460000000000036" style="position: absolute; width: 8.5px; height: 11.46px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 496px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_15766406" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="8.5" height="11.460000000000036" style="position: absolute; width: 8.5px; height: 11.46px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 370px; top: 496px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_8975444" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="8.5" height="11.460000000000036" style="position: absolute; width: 8.5px; height: 11.46px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 1006px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_18000885" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="8.5" height="11.460000000000036" style="position: absolute; width: 8.5px; height: 11.46px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 370px; top: 1006px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_88489290" scrolling="no"></iframe> {Pictures} Credit: C.W. I'm not sure it's fixed, so i might come back and update it. But it's a little cleaned up at least. /shrug/ Edit: And i couldn't find the dragon picture, so i'll need to update to the correct one. Edit2: Updated image and made the +1/+1 counters actually do something. i knew i forgot something. =) Edit3: Fixed last loyalty ability and reworded "enters the battlefield with six +1/+1"

Interesting idea for a game. We basically had the same game in the old forum but for real cards, using custom ones is an interesting idea. Will ponder about an entry
I do think you linked to the wrong image in the first post, though There's no dragon art there..

not sure if render mandatory but here's an entry. deviates a bit from the template but hopefully not too much
Vrenaka the Tender-Hearted Legendary Planeswalker - Vrenaka Put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature. Untap up to one target creature. Each player draws a card. Transform Vrenaka the Tender-Hearted.
Azgan the Tyrant Legendary Creature - Dragon God Flying, vigilance, indestructible
Whenever Azgan the Tyrant deals combat damage to a player, exile target permanent that player controls until Azgan leaves the battlefield.
4/4
mechanical changes: took out hexproof/indestruc combo because that's just too oppressive on a flying beater imo, lowered front side's SL since I added two abilities (since the main "meat" of the walker's meant to be the transform) flavour thought process: Vrenaka was a powerful dragon god who preferred to walk amongst his people in the guise of a gentle human mage, wandering around to aid and share. when his spark ignited, he found joy in doing the same on a multiversal scale. eventually, his home plane became the target of a danger that only the fearsome power of his dragon self could protect against; but as Vrenaka had spent so much time in his weaker form, he had to force himself magically to return to his dragon form, an act that damaged his soul. not only did he lose his spark, but his mind fractured to the point where his former kindness was replaced with callousness towards his people and a belief that the only way to aid them is through oppressive control. the new Vrenaka took on a new name to distance from his former self; and so Azgan the Tyrant was born, who would indeed defend his people from the danger... but would then become someone who his people needed defending from.

You're quite fun. Render isn't mandatory. And playing with the cards is encouraged. The idea is that some of the cards in these contests will be so broken that they might need a lot of changes to live up to both their flavor and the basic, underlying design of the card.

Legendary Planeswalker - Vrenaka At the beginning of your upkeep, if Vrenaka, the Bold has six or more loyalty counters on him, exile him, then return him to the battlefield transformed. : Choose up to one target creature you control. Until your next turn, when that creature dies, return it to the battlefield under your control. : Exile target creature until Vrenaka leaves the battlefield. / / / Azgan, Wonder of Ak'ra Legendary Creature - Dragon God Flying, indestructible, vigilance, haste When Azgan, Wonder of Ak'ra enters the battlefield, exile all other creatures until Azgan leaves the battlefield. 4/4
The first thing I changed was the condition of the ultimate. As a -6 ability, it's kind of secretly a -7, since using it while he's on 6 will cause him to head to the graveyard before he has a chance to transform. Thus, I made it an upkeep trigger once he has six counters instead. Exiling and returning was a trick to remove the (useless on the creature side) loyalty counters, return creatures exiled with the last ability, and trigger the ETB effect on the Azgan side. The loyalty abilities were chosen with the flavour of "Protecting everyone" - the first straight up saves a creature from death, while the second is more pre-emptive, either whisking your own creature away to safety or putting an enemy creature somewhere where it can do no harm. I didn't want to make the loyalty abilities too powerful - after all, the main draw of the card should be in transforming it.
The Azgan side was designed to show a more extreme way of "protecting". After all, Dragons in Magic have something of a reputation for being fearsome beasts, and I wanted to extend that even to a Dragon whose purpose is to protect - his idea is that the ultimate protection would be if there's no one around to harm or be harmed.

This could be fun. Here we go: Changes: 1. Upped the starting loyalty for a bit of survivability. 2. Upped the mana cost to compensate for the above. 3. Changed the +1 from a counter and conditional lifegain to a temporary boost and giving it indestructible for better defensiveness without upping the power. 4. Changed the damage prevention from damage to a creature to damage from a source so that he can defend himself when you have no creatures. 5. Upped the transformation cost because of the upped starting loyalty. 6. Cut the hexproof, because hexproof and indestructible is ridiculous, and I figured the indestructible was more important to the card. 7. Cut the can't be exiled for obvious reasons. 8. Changed the counters on the back face from charge counters to +1/+1 counters and cut the "+1/+1 for each charge counter" for obvious reasons. 9. Changed the number of counters on the back face to seven in both spots to preserve the symmetry with the transformation cost. 10. Lowered the toughness to keep the total at 10. 11. Increased the mana cost of exiling everything, because one mana to exile everything is ridiculous. 12. Cut the third ability because it was unnecessary and took up too much space.

Well I'll try this out. I kept most of the planeswalker side similar, as it being tame until it transforms is a pretty good idea. I did make it a little better in survivability for this side however. Vrenaka, the Bold
Legendary Planeswalker - Vrenaka : Put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature. You gain 2 life. : Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target creature until the start of your next turn. : Exile ~, then return him to the battlefield transformed with five +1/+1 counters on him. / / / Azgan, Wonder of Ak'raLegendary Creature - Dragon God Hexproof, Flying, Indestructible, Lifelink, Defender Remove a +1/+1 counter from ~: Exile target attacking creature. Return another creature you control to its owner's hand: Put a +1/+1 counter on ~. Remove five +1/+1 counters from ~: Exile ~. Return him to the battlefield transformed at the end of the turn. 5/5 As for the dragon side, I let it keep most of its hard to remove nature as to not make it feel too bad when it gets removed, however I made it much more defensive instead of offensive, while also keeping the idea of a protector. A giant 10/10 blocker with lifelink that's hard to remove and can exile big attackers. Also tor replace the cannot be exiled, instead he can blink himself to avoid some aoe at the cost of some counters.

I have two cards. The first, however, is just an iteration I did on the concept. Ultimately, it felt too wordy as well. #1Battle for Golden Heath Legendary Enchantment [R]
Battle for Golden Heath comes into battle with X victory counters on it.
Conditions: • Y < 8: Whenever a creature you control deals damage to a player, add one victory counter. • Y < 8: Whenever a creature an opponent controls deals damage to you, remove a victory counter. • Y > 8: Whenever a creature you control would deal damage, it deals double that damage instead.
#2 Battle for Golden Heath Legendary Enchantment - Saga [R]
(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III) I: Put a victory counter on Battle for Golden Heath for each creature you control that attacked this turn.
II: Remove a victory counter from Battle for Golden Heath for each creature an opponent controls that attacked you last turn.
III: Battle for Golden Heath creatures you control get +X/+0 and this deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of victory counters on this.
My basic thoughts were "this is a bit weak when compared to other double damage dealer cards I've seen" so, in both examples, I tried to add some sort of power and ended up with the Saga as the one I truly wanted to submit. They were made legendary because that seemed to fit the "historical battle" better.

I have put this art, as i can't find your in the Deviantart of the artist.
So well, explaining my card:
I thought that there was too much words to be only in one card, so I had the idea to do the Golden Heath they are fighting for.
I changed the counters mechanics to be more simple and to represent that the last battle in a war is the one that wins the war itself, and thus, gaining the reward.
Edit: fixing some wording

Seems the artist deleted it and I can't find a full size version. In any case: - Made the enchantment symmetrical to make it feel more like a battle between you and your opponent(s), dropped the cost to compensate
- Replaced damage-doubling with damage-adding to add more of a scale
(also allowed me to drop the starting requirement) - Restricted bonus damage to combat damage for flavour reasons (and to keep the card's focus in one place)
- Turned it into an end step trigger rather than a damage trigger to A) gain the maximum bonus off just one attack, allowing for strategies other than going wide and B) to allow for you to lose counters if you aren't attacking, rewarding proactiveness
- Added white. This was because even though the abilities were all red, particular the payoff, I felt that the playstyle it leads to is white, since while leaving blockers up denies you your counters damage it also denies your opponents counters. I also fit white worked fine with the existing flavour
- Changed "victory" counters to "conquest" counters since it's now possible for both players to damage race and wrack up counters and that would be silly.

If the point is about fighting for control of a thing, why not have the card in question actually change control based on who fights for it?

Battle for Golden Hearth Battle - Siege When ~ enters the battlefield, create two 1/1 white Human Soldier creature tokens. -------- Tactical Position Enchantment If a creature you control would deal damage, it deals twice that much damage instead.
