Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our five-hundred and twenty-eighth challenge! The winner of the "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" poll was glewmie with...And the challenge issued by myself is... First of all I most apologize to our winner and runner-up: Probably due to my absence / delayed schedule combined with a late challenge request I sadly didn't get a respone in time. As such I decided to offer a new challenge myself to get the CotW contest moving again. Hope you don't mind too much. This being said: Our new challenge is inspired WotC's recent trend to continiously try new spins on face-down creatures. From the recent Disguise to the upcoming Manifest Dread, we've come far from simple 2/2s for . As such: Design a card referencing face down permanents in some way, shape, or form. Entries may use an existing keyword, may use a new one, may not reqire a keyword at all. Also no restrictions whether the card can be put face down itself, does so with other stuff or simply cares about face down permanents. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Silarka, the Secret-Breaker1Legendary Creature--Dragon This spell can’t be cast. If Silarka, the Secret-Breaker would enter, exile it instead. Flying Whenever Silarka, the Secret-Breaker or another permanent you control is turned face up, you may draw a card. If you do, you may have that permanent deal damage equal to the number of cards in your hand to another target creature. : Turn target face up permanent you control face down. Morph (You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for . Turn it face up any time for its morph cost.)5/5 1Design Challenge #3 (I envisioned this as a melding of Silumgar and Atarka).

Entry: {Text}Cleave in Twain Sorcery Destroy target artifact or land. Delivery (You may cast this spell face-down as an Equipment artifact with “Equip ” for . When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may cast this spell from the battlefield for its delivery cost.) I am once again trying to make Metamorph happen. This time, you can turn your spells into a declawed Shuko with saboteur implications. Delivery spells count as artifacts when you cast them face down, bolstering artificer strategies and triggering prowess. Your Voltron quarterback will usually net you a discount, or bend the color pie as depicted above. I made a few more nonentries:

| Lampryid Gospin Two White and Two Blue
Creature — Faerie Bard
When Lampryid Gospin enters, exile target creature. Its owner manifests it at the beginning of the next end step. Whenever a permanent is turned face up, you gain life equal to its mana value. Face down permanents you don't control cost 1 generic more to turn face up
2/5
The card art is Fireflies by India-Lee Crews.
It depicts A girle in the woods by a stream. She is holding a flute shaped like a leaf and is watching the fireflys around her.
At the edges of the image, several fireflies, which are much more human like, watch from hiding, cautious. |
A Trostani-like effect for 'things turned turning face up' with an ETB that blink one creature and forces it to return facedown, plus a tax on turn it or anything else face up? It seems good. Probably a little too good taken all together, but any choose two of the three felt lackluster to me.

Manifest Destiny Enchantment When ~ enters the battlefield, manifest the top card of your library. Whenever you turn a creature face-up, draw a card. : Manifest the top card of your library. Are you familar with the history of the term "manifest destiny" ? I understand that it's used as just a turn of phrase in some places and it's here also a pun on the name of the mechanic, but the phrase has a historical context that, were it a canon card, could, in my opinion, easily land it on the culturally offensive banned list alongside Invoke Prejudice.

I'll withdraw the entry and make something else.

I did have some additional flavor in mind that was meant to showcase this is an explicitly evil act from a government-based organization, but it sounds like this card is already causing some discomfort and I'm sorry for that. I'll withdraw the entry and make something else. I'm grateful for your willingness to so readily withdraw you design for my comfort, though I would note, I'm not personally uncomfortable. I was merely being cautious to the possiblity that you didn't know because sometimes, people don't know things, and my function in most of my social groups generally boils down to 'that dumbass (affectionate) who knows things'. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the linguistic situation so that you would be able to make decisions with the sitch in mind, and that there wasn't a case of accidential, if unfortunate, convergence.
It seems you were aware, so my caution has possibly proven a touch overtuned.
Based on your response, I'd be happy to see how you'd go about making the card to frame its namesake as the horrible set of cultural ideas and systemic policies that it was: since the truth of history can't be learned by shying away from the fact that humans can be cruel to each other, and only covering the 'family friendly' themes. Of course, only if it's something you're still be interested in.

Redner to be added later, card inspired by a stupid base idea and Manifest Dread for the specific execution:
Sorcery (silver)Manifest dreadmaw. (Look at the top two cards of your library. Put one onto the battlefield face down as a 6/6 creature with trample and the other into your graveyard. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it’s a creature card.)

Paging www.reddit.com/r/ColossalDreadmaw/. I just went there, and this was the top entry. Also, hydraheadhunter & ZephyrPhantom, in high school, I played Magic with a buch of my fellow students, one of whom was this African American kid who had a really interesting family: his mom is white, and his dad is bisexual and very androgenous, looking more feminine than masculine. He told me his idea for the following joke card: Manifest Destiny Enchantment You control all black creatures and lands. You control all red creatures and lands. Nevermind the fact that lands are colorless, you can get the gist of the joke. North Hills Prep was a weird school.

Fully taking inspiration from sade612's delivery mechanic for this card, I feel like this would definitely be in the same set. Also heavily inspired by a couple pieces of art from Josh Ash on Artstation who created the character Sprout. after making this card I now need to know everything about the life and world of Postmaster Sprout lol

Erase the Self Sorcery Turn target face up creature an opponent controls face down. (It’s a 2/2 creature) In an instant he knew no more. No self, no memories. He was no more.
Not entirely happy with the flavourtext. Might come up with something better later.

I built a morph commander deck before WOTC did their precon for morph. Everyone at my shop thought I was crazy. I just like the chaos of face down cards. It makes other players sometimes go on tilt. For no reason. Support for face down cards isn't very strong. Even with the recent surge in popularity.

It's time again! Sorry for not submitting a challenge in time! Here is my entry for this contest!
I wanted to try something very weird! Because Morphs do not have a creature type while face-down, I imagined it would be very strange to have a creature that didn't have a type while face up!

Packleader’s Deputy Creature - Coyote Mercenary When this creature enters, exile up to one target creature, then its owner cloaks it. Face-down creatures can’t attack, block, or be turned face up. “If I can’t sniff them out, at least they’ll be too scared to come out of hiding.”1/3

And it's even a card in German.. OK, that's hilarious xD
I did take a different approach with the artwork, though
