Welcome to the Deckbuilders' Challenge originally created by sdfkjgh! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a deck along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of every two weeks, a winner will be determined by forum poll, and the winner decides the challenge for the next fortnight's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our fifty-first challenge! The winners of the “Hall of Fame poll“ were ZephyrPhantom and Daij_Djan with... |
(Modern + Bonus Challenges 1,2,3)
{Comments}A White Weenie/Taxes deck that focuses on attacking as a group via Aether Vial and mass buffs with Mikaeus, the Lunarch/or equipping your legendary heroes with iconic equipment from the recent years of magic. Gemstone Caverns functions as Vials 5-8 and allows us to get rid of duplicate Legendary in our hand that we feel might not be useful. 2/3rds Legendary is tough on a 60-card deck that has to be legal for a format below Legacy - if you want to even partially consider running some non-Legendary cards your manabase has to pick up the slack for the Legendary count, and even then the majority of the things your deck will have to do like removal or wincons will have to be covered entirely by legendaries. I ended up going with monoWhite for this particular challenge because we can run 4x Flagstones of Trokair and 4x Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire to help further cut our Legendary count some slack, and White has a large variety of Legendary weenies with varied abilities that would give it a chance to fight against a regular deck. The next best color for this would probably be Red due to Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Zurgo Bellstriker giving you solid turn 1-2 plays combined with whatever other 2-drops and above you can scrap up, but I suspect this deck would be a lot less flexible due to lacking room for things like Lightning Bolt-esque burn for removal or to close out the game. |

(Commander + Bonus Challenges 1,2,3)
{Comments} I did consider three options to do this challenge including all three bonus challenges in Commander: - Pick a tribe that's full of legends (like Zombies) and design a tribal deck focussing on those cards.
- Pick a theme that mostly consists of legends, like Shrines, God-tribal or Superfriends.
- Pick a commander that's all about creating token copies and offer him tons of legends as potential targets..
If you know me, you probably know what I ended up choosing:

So, how does this work? It's simple: Most legends in this deck either have ETB or die triggers – so it won't even matter of you cannot keep your legendary copies around! Obviously this means there is ome tribal overlap, which is where sacrifice outlets and graveyard removal come into play. I'd have loved for the deck to be a bit more interactive and have removal, but there was just no place for that. Not being allowed to play lands like Boseiju, Who Endures really hurts – heck, I have a Tolaria in the deck! – so excluding a handfull of options like Boseiju, Who Shelters All I really, really didn't want to play, the land slots alone took up 20 of my 32 potential nonlegend slots... Still, while I'd probably rank this deck only at a medium power level, I think it'd be quite fun to play |

And the challenge issued by one of our winners was... In celebration of Easter, let's think about some eggs. Except not these – but those: Yes, Eggs is a deck that wants you to repetitively sacrifice and return cantripping artifacts to generate more and more card draw and mana to at some point just burn down (or similar) your opponent. I'm however not asking you to explicitly design an Eggs variant, but rather leave the challenge a bit more open: Design a deck where sacrificing one (or more) artifact(s) is part of the key strategy.Have fun, everyone! Please provide a decklist using deckstats, tappedout or similar. Feel free to add some comments as they will be included in the final poll. Please provide a deck name as well as choose a card to represent your deck in the poll. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Is it cheating if I just enter with my Osgir, the Reconstructor list that I've had in paper basically since STX dropped?

Pretty much just pure netdecking is (obviously) forbidden.

So, after realizing I haven't updated the online copy of my decklist since before MH2 (I added a pretty sizable modular package at that point), I promptly didn't do anything about it because I didn't have time. Now, nearly a week later, I finally found time and am ready to present: Osgir's Modular History The goal is pretty simple - Hit people with big dumb artifact creatures. We get there by using Osgir to sacrifice and then double our mana rocks and artifact lands to eventually drop dumb things like Phyrexian Triniform, Myr Battlesphere, and Triplicate Titan. Note that our big beaters are supplemented by our Modular package, using things like Arcbound Tracker and Arcbound Slasher to stack up +1/+1 counters on each other or the aforementioned big beaters. Those beaters also have either etb or death triggers to double (or even quadruple - thanks Battlemage's Bracers!) with Osgir's copy ability. Exile and leaves-the-graveyard triggers like Bell Borca and Quintorius give us an alternate path to victory by going either tall or wide triggering off of Osgir's ability or our other artifact reanimation. Overall, this deck hits a nice upper-mid powerlevel without being totally overwhelming that I really enjoy.
