Version v1.132 - Midnight Rework
For those who haven't been following the thread, a rework is underway - I've decided to make it official as we get closer to releasing it. Big focuses of this rework are a reworked combat system and a Getting Started Thread for better new player onboarding.
Patch notes moved here.
Got rid of BBcode list formatting and replaced it with identical plaintext lists. ProBoards lists just flat out don't work well and I've found the best solution is to just eliminate them entirely for easier updates.

Version 1.131
Mutate + Creature added as a valid 'free' multi-card combination.
Version 1.13 - Guilds of the Forgotten Realm
We are now trial running a Guild system as a new way for players to ally with each other and organize events and quests. This subsection's rules are currently being managed by Arcanis - if you're interested in starting or joining a guild, please see the Guild Hall Rules.
PREVIOUS VERSION NOTES - 1.1 - 1.124
Version 1.124 is now LIVE. (Modern Horizons)
- Wording fixes and clarifications.
Version 1.123 is now LIVE.
- Clarified a starting ability that's been vague for a while - You can make tokens of any kind for a card to represent an appropriate effect when starting out.
Version 1.122 is now LIVE.
- Heroic Intervention now requires 10 assists with 8/10 rating instead of 20 assists.
Version 1.121:
- New restriction achievement: Monomania: Choose a perk you've purchased during character creation. (Basic Perks or Advanced Perks under "Skill Point Spending" qualify as perks.). Each card you make must use that perk. (For example, if you chose Jester, you can only make silver-bordered cards. If you chose Planar Champion, you can only make Planes.)
- Typos fixed with help from gurfafflekins.
- In light of the use of new colors, Multicolor level is now no longer capped at 4.
Version 1.12:
- Gamble's new threshold is now 9/10 rating.
Version 1.11: This is a quick update containing fixes and some small patches.
- Gamble had a typo, should give 1 Valor on a fail.
- Attacking and Defending with Multiple Cards section typo corrected.
- New achievement: Cartouche of Zeal: Your previous character created a new card subtype that has had at least five cards with ratings of 8/10 or above. This subtype must drastically adjust how the card works - Vehicles and Sagas are a good example. A Planeswalker type by itself will not work but a Planeswalker type that does correspond to a distinct mechanical gimmick (e.g. Type "Fortress", indicating Planeswalkers that only 'react' to being attacked) can count.
- Librarian of Leng now only applies to card types and supertypes.
- Vehicles + Creatures added to "auto-tactical" pairings.
-
Version 1.1: This is a major update containing multiple revamps so please be sure to read everything!
Most critical updates:
- Reincarnation's initial requirement has been lowered to 300 Score for first time chagter, and 500 Score for every character afterwards.
- Perks have been cleaned up and refined as seen in the Skill Point Spending section. Most notably Sigil of the Commander now is the sole command zone related perk, uses CFA Mana, and relies on you buying other perks to make corresponding command zone cards of that type.
- Call for Aid now allows for fansets, Masterpieces are clarified as their own "set" each corresponding to the set/block they debuted with.
- Assisting now gains full valor regardless of whether it was an assist to an attack or defensive action.
- Some keyword now inherently grant the right to create a second card albeit with some limitations.
Attacking and Defending with Multiple Cards:
Whenever you attack, you may create one card, and you may also choose to invoke card(s) in your Command Zone, or bring existing cards in using Call for Aid. If you are creating cards using the any of the following mechanics, you may create two cards using these mechanics in a single interaction with the following conditions:
- The second card must be a creature (unless you are creating a Fortification, in which case it must be a land.) You don't need the corresponding masteries in these cases.
- The combined CMC of the two cards must be less than your current CMC.
Equipment + Creatures
Vehicles + Creatures
Auras + Permanents
Bestow Creature + Creature
Soulbond Creature + Creature
Fortifications + Lands
Host + Augment
Meld + Meld
Partner With + Partner With
Conspiracy + Other
The Tactical Imperator perk allows a player to pay " style="max-width:100%;"], if they are not already creating a second card because of one of the mechanics listed above.
- Monarch and City's Blessing are now considered regular keywords.
- New Perk: Flusterstorm (Whenever you respond to two or more cards with a single card, you get +1 Valor for each card you countered after the first.)
- Achievements: Enter the Infinite no longer stacks. Old Fogey, Experimental Frenzy, and Wojek Veterran now stack instead.
- New Achievements:
Experimental Frenzy: This character has reincarnated without earning any other achievements that the player has not already earned. Can be obtained multiple times.
Old Fogey: Regenerate with 2000 score. Can be obtained multiple times.
Modern Master: A previous character had at least seven non-evergreen keywords unlocked.
Conqueror's Pledge: A previous character started a conflict that involved four or more players. Requires mutual agreement between all Board owners involved.
Helix Pinnacle: Your previous character had 10 or more cards with total ratings of 10 or more.
Heroic Intervention: Assist the defense of another player 20 times.
Gamble: You're a risk taker, a know it all, a hotshot, a cocky kid - whatever you want to call yourself, whenever you receive a score of 8 or higher, you take double valor, but anything less results in 1(0?) valor.
Apex of Power: Whether you have just begun or have practiced for centuries, you are always on the edge of what your powers are capable of. This comes with the downside that you don't know how to hold back. For each card you cast, it must be of the maximum CMC you are able to use. You must be able to cast spells with converted mana costs and have a CMC level of at least 10 when you reincarnate to earn it.
Old Fogey: Regenerate with 2000 score. Can be obtained multiple times.

You must be able to cast spells with converted mana costs and have a CMC level of at least 10 when you reincarnate to earn it.
- Trophies have been clarified:
A Trophy, awarded as a result of a War, Horde, or sufficiently appropriate event approved by the GM or Rules Manager, can be designed to give a beneficial effect to the winning player in question. The trophy must generally adhere to the following design restrictions:
1) The broader/more general purpose the effect, the weaker it must be. Creating a 0/1 defender is fine, for example, creating a 5/5 Kronch is not.
2) Conversely, the more specific the trophy's restrictions add, the more doodads you can add to it. " You may design Hursar planeswalkers as though your CMC was 7 and your color mastery included GWU" for example
3) Instead of granting an effect, the Trophy-giver may instead design a Signature Spellbook of no more than 8 cards that acts as an additional Call for Aid set.
4) When in doubt; trophies should be "75%" of a perk. For example "Grants City's Blessing" is not okay but "City's Blessing but only usable on artifact creatures" is.
5) Lastly, note that Trophies can have no effect and be purely cosmetic if you wish it to be that way.
- New staff - WindyDelcarlo is now Formatting Manager and blueseclipse is now Rules Manager. If there are formatting issues in the rules post please contact Windy, and you can ask Blues any questions about rules ambiguities or balance changes that need to be made. See "Clarifying Rules" at the bottom for more info.
- New Community Vote System:
Community Voting:
In some instances, items will be suggested by players, or situations will come up that require adjudication, and the GM and Rules Manager (currently ZephyrPhantom and blueseclipse respectively) may be unavailable for a period of time - or there may be disagreements regarding how to handle a rule, or whether a rule should exist. In these cases, a Community Vote thread can be created regarding the issue, with a poll included regarding the matter. Players will be encouraged to discuss their opinions on the issue, as well as vote on it. If the issue is simply a question of how a rules debate should be resolved (regarding interpretation of a rule and how it should be applied), or a suggestion of a new or altered Perk or Achievement, then a simple majority should be sufficient to see these implemented. To add new rules on the boards, or implement changes to the existing rules, then a 66% majority should be required.
In the event that the GM or Rules Manager makes a rules change that the players strongly disagree with, a Community Vote can similarly be used to help resolve the issue.
- Locations no longer use the Ruler system (you may reimplement it if you wish with your Location's ruleset).
- Various other small changes or refinements may have occurred due to the scale of this community-based update. A special thank you to blueseclipse for helping with the newly formatted rules and a big thanks to everyone that contributed feedback. Please be sure to read the rules carefully.
PREVIOUS VERSION NOTES
Changelog:
V1.083
Just a quick change: Calling for Aid can now draw from any core set that was Magic 2010 and after. (So currently 2010-2019 and Magic Origins.)
V1.082
New achievement:
Homicidal Seclusion: A previous character you had never called for aid and had at least one encounter where at least two players attacked them at the same time (either by having multiple players attempt an attack on the same board, or having at least one other player come to the aid of a defender when you attacked).
V1.081
Changes:
New perk for Host/Augment, in order to keep the supertype and keyword tied together.
Biomage Engineer: You weave the threads of life deftly and purely to synthesize new life, unlike those Eldrazi defilers who sloppily mash life together. Allows you to design Host/Augment cards. Costs 1 skill point.
New achievement:
True Classicist: Your previous incarnation had no keywords outside of the evergreen and no new card types and one of your previous incarnations had Akroma's Memorial.
Custom mechanics now include changes to card frame such as "Planeswalker Mana" (can be paid with a loyalty counter or [mana]) or things like the Saga frame. This decision is made in light of WoTC's increasing focus on making special card frames a regular occurrence in sets much like keywords.
Herald of a New Archetype clarified to include supertypes.
Tactical Imperator now works on defense. Clarified slightly to mention that while you may design two cards with it, your Valor gain is the AVERAGE rating of these two cards, so don't bank on spamming broken cards to complement balanced ones.
V1.08
Contraptions are now defined, but they'll be remaining in the Artificer perk - if we can have things like Monarch and City's Blessing, I think Contraptions have enough room to still be done in a serious light. You only need Jester's Cap if you want to make silly things like Bee-Bee-Gun or mechanics like "When you crank this contraption make a player play standing up for the rest of the turn."
Saga was added to the list of Spellslinger types.
I quite frankly have no idea what to do with "Legendary Planeswalker" since I don't want one of the basic card types in the game costing 2 points. For now, if you purchase Planeswalker as a card type, you may use Legendary Planeswalker so that you can keep the same spirit of designing Planeswalkers in WOTC's style (note that you will still need to buy the Questmaster perk to enable Legendary on other cards.) Let me know if you think this should be changed.
New Advanced Perk!
Monarch's Crown: From high above, on your golden throne, enemies must challenge you and your reign as the Monarch, with your City's Blessings. Costs 1 skill point.
V1.07 - Discord Chat Version, Perk Reworks, and More!
Perks have been reworked! Advanced Perks's limitation has been changed to "Advanced Perks now can only be selected at 500 Score or higher."
Advanced Perks is now mainly a category to contain perks that greatly increase the difficulty of responding to a character's attacks or defenses.
A number of perks have been moved out of Advanced Perks to reflect this:
Renowned Spy
Twin-Souled
One with the Void (Additional change: One with the Void is treated as adding :c: to your Colors, and :c: usage as a cost is factored into Multicolor level.
- New Perk: Jester: Confuse enemies with a maniacal grin as you unlock the endless eccentricities of Un-cards! Costs 1 skill point.
Guest system clarified: "If you want to do silly things that break the game to give players a challenge to respond to, the Guest System is always available. You may attack with no restrictions, however you do not earn Valor or Score."
Defending clarified and adjusted: "If the main defender doesn't respond with a card, either by choice or inaction (one week or more), you may take full valor instead. If you feel like you are being deliberately approached with cards designed to create a frustrating or no-win situation, you may chose to reject the attack entirely. Use this option with care - if a card is poorly designed but something you can respond to, you should be giving it a low rating and a response instead."
Defenders may now only use one card design in defense. This is an experimental change to test if people prefer more difficult designs and may be adjusted.
Call for Aid: Now unlocks a new set for free every 150 Score. Also, instead of 300 score = additional 10 mana to cap, it is now 150 score = additional 5 mana to cap. This is to push Call For Aid's usage.
V1.06 - Planar Crossroads
As of right now both versions of the game mostly abide by the same rules - We are testing Base CMC starting at 1 on Discord's version. Otherwise, all rules and rule changes affect both versions.
That being said, we're going to make some notable rule changes as of right now, so be sure to read closely:
Artificer, Tinkerer, and Engineer are all now one Artificer perk. (I.e. Allows Equipment, Vehicles/Crew, Fortifications, Contraptions) If you had more than one of these, you get a full skill point refund.
Enchanter, Occult Priest, Spellslinger are all now one Spellslinger perk. (I.e. Allows Aura, Shrine, Curse, Trap, Arcane) If you had more than one of these, you get a full skill point refund.
Existing Commanders subtract from your mana pool cap. E.g. a CMC 3 Commander results in a 12/12 mana pool on a zero score character. Please keep this in mind. Commanders clarified to always start on the battlefield.
Humility had outdated wording, was updated.
All new boards here should be titled "bb [Name's] Battle Board". (The bb helps distinguish this game from other forum games. Please do this to help the moderators run the game smoothly!)
Patch V1.052 - Armored Core: Vehicular Warfare!
We have a new keyword to account for Vehicles!
Engineer: You work in the realm of gears, cogs, and carriers, all to help creatures get from point A to point B! Unlocks the Vehicle subtype and the Crew keyword. Requires Artifact Mastery and costs 1 skill point.
V1.051 - SUPERHOTYPE
Additional Annoucenemnt: Locations are back on trial! It costs 100 Valor to create your first location and 50 for each one after that. For an example of a location, see Grand Central Castle.
Assist defending has been changed slightly. If the original defending player doesn't respond to the attacker at all, assisting players get full valor instead of half.
Putting supertypes on a card no longer requires Multityper. Instead of going and changing every supertype perk, I've instead changed Multityper.
Multityper: You can combine multiple major types onto one card, like Enchantment Artifacts and Artifact Creatures! Costs 1 skill point. Supertypes like World, Basic, and Snow don't require this perk.)
One last footnote: When attacking with two cards under Tactical Imperator, your Valor/Score gain is the average of the two ratings.
v1.050
Keep in mind that character restrictions do not apply when calling for aid! If you are mono " style="max-width:100%;"] but desperately need Giant Growth this is -exactly- what it is here for!
"If a player hasn't been attacked for a week but remains active, you may attack them again. This refresh occurs every Sunday at 12 : 00 PM GMT +0. (If you want to know your time relative to GMT, check here!." was long outdated. Is now "You can repeatedly attack a player as much as you like so long as you do not have an attack waiting for a response from that player."
v1.049:
Twin-Souled updated:
Twin-Souled: You look beyond the surface of the constructs you make, always aiming to pull out more potential! Allows you to design double-faced and Flip cards. Costs 1 skill point. (Transform and meld come with this perk.) (You still need Multityper to put multiple types on the DFC.)
v1.048
Greetings, fellow Planeswalkers.
It saddens me to say that the Multiverse is facing a grave threat. Eldrazi warp the very realities of magic that we cast, felling planes and twisting heroes and villains into madmen alike.
Some of you may be familiar with a magic called Meld, a deceitful Eldrazian art created by warping the essence of mana into a form that makes a mockery of Delkor's Overlay magic and Stratopol's Triangulation. While I have ensured that the Arena itself will be safe from any Eldrazi that attempt to corrupt its form, I must ask that the following rules and regulations be followed when using Meld magic:
V.1.408 - Meld Rulings
1) Meld can be unlocked by using Beyond the Evergreen. However, to play a card's melded form without Tactical Imperator, you must be able to pay for both halves of the card within your CMC (converted mana cost) level. For example, if I have Meld unlocked and I can spend up to 5 mana, I can play a melded card whose components are CMC 1 and CMC 4, or CMC 2 and CMC 3, but not CMC 6 and CMC 10.
2) Attacks are still limited to one-card. You can attack with a melded card, a piece of an unmelded card, but not both pieces at the same time.
3) Tactical Imperator negates restriction 2 and lets you attack with both pieces if you wish to. You're free to mess with meld and unmeld triggers as well.
Cadiem Honis,
Animara Vectis
V1.047
Clarification: Achievements do not stack -except- for Enter the Infinite.
V1.046
Muzzarlo's Private Gala/Muzzarlo's Ballroom has been added by request of ThisisSakon for reasons that presumbably relate to The Lost Tales; as such, it is a temporary Trial location and may be subject to any events relevant to his sets.
Kreig Brett is now part of the official ruleset! This is a Battle Board character that can be played by anyone: feel free to design, improve, and play him as you so choose for whatever length of time you wish - you might find him as a good way to create neutral or third-party allies and enemies in various situations!
V1.045
The long-outdated "You can't attack a person twice in a row" rule has been removed - this was originally put in place to prevent spam in the recent posts section, but since BB is it's own section now, we don't need to worry about that.
Consequently, the following perk has been removed - anyone who has purchased it may get refunded for the full amount of Valor.
Relentless Aggressor: You strike with a fearsome savagery that pushes your body to the limits. You can now attack twice in a row, but must wait for two people to attack afterwards. Costs 2 skill points.
V1.044
Grand Central Castle is now up and running~ If it's successful, Locations may become a thing in the future! Go battle over there or something to try it out~
v1.043
Just to clarify on two things:
1) Normal colorless stuff like an artifact that says ":t: Add :c:" still doesn't require skill points, same for things like :5: :6: :7: costs. This is what Wizards deems "generic" costing. If you're going to use colorless as a cost for Eldrazi, along with Wastelands and devoid, you need to purchase this as a Special Perk:
One with the Void: You tap into forces that require no color's bidding, for better or worse. Enables Colorless costs, Devoid, and Wastes usage. Costs 1 skill point.
2) Keywords are not evergreen until formally declared so by Wizards.
v1.042
Due to the removal of tektek, I've replaced the character maker link with several other possible options. Be sure to credit the program you used in your profile! Suggested character makers include:
DreamSelf
Anime Character Maker 2
HeroMachine
Doll Divine
- You may now pay 50 Valor to transfer unused trophies from an inactive character to an active one.
V1.041
- Colors your master are now consistent with Commander color identity - No mana symbols or cards of other colors are allowed, but references to other colors are fine.
- Cost Coordinator has been removed. All players with this perk may remove it for a 100 Valor Refund!
- Null Reincarnation is here!
Null Reincarnation: If a player wishes to reincarnate but doesn't have enough Valor, they may message me or post here for a Null Reincarnation. If this is approved, they may create a completely new character - no Achievements from previous characters will be applied to this character.
-Clarification: If you sign up for a War or Horde while playing as a character, you are 'locked' into playing the War/Horde as that character unless you've cleared an exception with other players and the event's Arbiter.
-Clarification: If you sign up for a War or Horde while playing as a character, you are 'locked' into playing the War/Horde as that character unless you've cleared an exception with other players and the event's Arbiter.
V1.04
Calling for Aid has been reworked! See the new section below for more information.
New Achievement: Akroma's Memorial: Your previous incarnation had no keywords outside of the evergreen.
New Advanced Perk: Twin-Souled: You look beyond the surface of the constructs you make, always aiming to pull out more potential! Allows you to design double-faced and Flip cards. Costs 1 skill point. (Transform comes with this perk.)
You may now switch back to previous characters you Reincarnated from! In order to do so, you need 200 more Score than when you last reincarnated.
Additionally, if a player hasn't been attacked for a week but remains active, you may now attack them again. This refresh now occurs at every Sunday 12 : 00 PM GMT +0. (If you want to know your time relative to GMT, check here!.
V1.031
-11 new player-designed achievements have been added to Reincarnation! They are:
Three Visits: You are on your third or higher character.
Lotus Bloom: Your previous character has created a new color that has had at least three cards with ratings of 6/10 or above.
Librarian of Leng: Your previous character created a new card type or subtype that has had at least three cards with ratings of 6/10 or above.
Humility: Your previous character has no traits/perks.
Not of This World: Your previous character has no color.
Wojek Veteran: Regenerate with 1250 score.
Evil Twin: Your new character cannot have colors or card types that your previous character had.
One with Nothing: Your previous character had a converted mana cost of 0 mana symbol.
Arbiter of the Ideal: Your previous character has only one color.
Enchanted Evening: Your previous character has only one card type mastery.
Blind Seer: Your previous character unlocked the ability to call aid from at least 3 non-Core Sets.
V1.03
-Reincarnation is now implemented! Check the new section for relevant rules!
V1.02
Perks:
-A Sinister Decree cost lowered to 1 Skill Point.
-Tactical Imperator cost lowered to 2 Skill Points.
-Planar Champion initial cost lowered to 2 Skill Points.
-New Perk: Relentless Aggressor: Can attack twice in a row, but must wait for two people to attack afterwards. Costs 2 skill points.
-New Perk: Hero's Legacy: What kind of hero will you choose to be? Allows you to set your character to a Hero Card of your choice, or if you're feeling bold, design one of your own! Costs 2 skill points to choose/create a Hero and 1 point to switch Heroes.
General:
-Perk Refunding: If you don't like a perk you've picked, you may refund it for half it's value in Valor. For example, a skill that cost 2 skill points would give you 100 Valor back.
V1.011:
-Two new perks:
Questmaster: You can now recruit Legendary cards! Costs 1 skill point.
Experienced Explorer: Your experience in traversing various landscapes allows you access to the World and Basic types! Costs 1 skill point.
- The defender system is undergoing review and may be changed to allow more fair opportunities to defend. Stay tuned! (Also, you no longer get free Valor for defending. Counter-rating is now the main source of Valor!) In the meantime, feel free to give your thoughts on the current defense system - I will be incorporating as much feedback as I can into the next patch to the defender rules!
- If you are using an avatar please remember to credit the art source. If you are using tektek.org/dream_avatar/ , please put "Rendered from tektek.org" below your avatar in appropriate size font.
- The first user-made Valor service is live! See Decembra's board for more info!
- As a reminder, you're allowed to use evergreen keywords regardless of how you start off! See mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Evergreen for current evergreen keywords.
- Added bump policy: One bump on a board after 2-3 days of inacivity, and then a bump every ~5 days of silence afterwards. Valor editing does not count towards this limit though it can move your post to the front of recent posts.
- New Rules have been added for gift cards!
If a player sends you a 'gift' card, you may choose to accept or reject the gift. If you accept the gift, you are restricted to making a card that somehow makes the gift better for you - at minimum, it needs to be non-harmful to be considered an acceptance. (E.g. a gift of Inspiration could be responded to with Chasm Skulker) The attacker and defender are free to use their own discretion on how the gift improves relations.
If you choose to reject the gift, treat it as a normal attack.
V1.01
- New Counter-rating system! Instead of an attacker getting a free 1 valor on attack/2 on success, the defender now gives the attack a 1-10 Valor/Score rating based on how well the card was designed. See "Let's Battle" for more details.
- Pacing change! You can't attack the same player twice in a row. Someone else has to attack that player before you can attack again. This is intended to keep several players from crowding the same board - spread the love around, people!
- As an aside, remember that friendly collaboration and competition are the main goals here! No one likes it if you just spam counterspells or big protection fatties - creative solutions are the life of this game and you'll get better ratings as a result of thinking outside of the box.
