Flo00 I'm not sure why the Young Uddsaur costs green when the Egg doesn't make it green and the Ancient isn't green. I assume a typo perhaps? I can see it from a mechanic point of supporting the trample, but it just feels out of place in the whole picture. Other than that, I think it's a great progression, as well as all being cards that are playable. gluestick248 I understand the progression here, but mechanically it doesn't really hold together. The only thing that really links these cards is the mention of Treefolk in Wicker Wand. Perhaps if there was art it would hold together more, but I still think I'd prefer it work mechanically as well as flavorfully. temawimag This is a bit of an interesting one. It tells the story of a single faceless soldier, but through the lens of their actions and the power that their story inspires. Not as explicit as I was expecting, but a good entry nonetheless. Lady Mapi Now this is what I was expecting. The lore progresses, from lowly vampire neophyte to a proper vampire in her own right, and then finally becoming a broodmother herself. The mechanics progress, raising in cost each time, power each time (but importantly staying unbalanced in the same way each time), and even rarity. Plus the little hint of flying on the first creature that then becomes a constant. It's exactly what I was looking for. I'm glad we actually ended up with so many entries in such a short amount of time after so long. I was really looking forward to this challenge and was a little disappointed when it didn't get any bites, but sometimes these things happen. I'm glad you all put the effort in to tell a story in just a few cards, but in the end, I have to give the win to Lady Mapi.

Thanks!
Alright, the next challenge will be to finish a cycle - pick a pre-existing card, then make a vertical or horizontal cycle out of it.

Jartis Thanks for the feedback. Wasn't a typo. Just wanted it to be a bit... more? Young Uddsaurs tend to be a bit wilder than old ones. Recruit Elemental Creature - Elemental Whenever an Aura becomes attached to Recruit Elemental, create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token. 1/1 Sprite Elemental Creature - Elemental Whenever an Aura becomes attached to Sprite Elemental, create a 1/1 blue Fearie creature token with flying. 2/2 Rot Elemental Creature - Elemental Whenever an Aura becomes attached to Rot Elemental, create a tapped 2/2 black Zombie creature token. 4/4 Cave Elemental Creature - Elemental Whenever an Aura becomes attached to Cave Elemental, create a 1/1 red Goblin creature token with haste. 3/3 Bramble Elemental

Bumping this in the hope that we'll get more than two entries, and also to announce that things have come up on my end.
Could someone else judge this contest when the two weeks are up, please? I don't think I'll be able.

A cycle based around Dragonspeaker Shaman, since wizards has had it for a while now that each color has an iconic big creature type.
Creature - Human Rebel Cleric Angel spells you cast cost less to cast. 2/2
Creature - Human Advisor Wizard Sphinx spells you cast cost less to cast. 2/2
Creature - Human Rogue Cleric Demon spells you cast cost less to cast. 2/2
Creature - Human Scout Druid Hydra spells you cast cost less to cast. 2/2
I put in an "extra" creature type for each to keep it in line with the first as much as I could, but it's a bit gross. Don't think it would be best to print that way; but as weird throw-backs, maybe?

That it would. I'll try to get to it before I go to bed. Edit: Screw it, my raging imposter syndrome is getting in the way. I'm giving it to Jartis in the interest of time. I'll give actual reviews at some point when I don't feel like an abject failure - which might be never.

Lady Mapi I honestly hope you feel better. Impostor Syndrome can be a PITA to deal with. For the next challenge, I'd like to see some cards that represent an adventuring group. It could be your D&D party, or characters from a movie (for example, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy), or whatever. It doesn't even have to be characters that already exist, as long as they all serve clear roles within the group and are better when the others are on the field with them. Also, feel free to add some enchantments or artifacts to represent gifted powers or magical items. Let's shoot for at least 3 cards, because below that can hardly be called a "group".

Testy Firedog Creature - Elemental Hound Trample, double strike Enrage — Testy Firedog’s power is equal to the ammount of damage dealt to it this turn. “It makes a good pet, but it needs a good beating now and then.” — Scrandon */5 Scrandon, Hell’s Escapee Legendary Creature - Devil Warrior First strike Whenever Scrandon, Hell’s Escapee attacks, you may pay . If you do, it deals X damage to each creature. 2/1 Edonar, Protector of the Meek Legendary Creature - Human Knight First strike, protection from red Creatures with toughness 1 you control have indestructible. 3/4 Dorwa, Death’s Apprentice Legendary Creature - Human Wizard : Target creature’s toughness becomes 1 until end of turn. 1/1 Scrandon is a devil that had enough of hell's viciouus dealings and fled. On his way out he made a new pet. Later he got Edonar to help him escape the troops of hell that tried to drag him back to his destined place. While on the run they somehow bumped into Dorwa. She doesn't speak much, but for some reason she came along with them. Scrandon believes she likes Edonar, but I think that's nonsense. She must have some dark machinations going on behind their backs.

I refuse to let Incel Simulator fancards have a shot at winning this if I can help it, so
Callow Squire Creature - Human Soldier Whenever CARDNAME attacks, target creature you control with greater power gets +1/+2 until end of turn. "Sir Killian and his partner chose me. Trust me. What meager strength I have, I offer to be theirs."
1/2
Frontline Priest Creature - Human Cleric Lifelink Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired as long as you control both of them.)
If a source would deal damage to the paired creature, prevent X of that damage, where X is Frontline Priest's power. "Fight as you will, Killian. While I live, so will you."
2/2
Creature - Human Knight Vigilance Damage that would be dealt to other creatures you control is dealt to Hardened Champion instead.
: Hardened Champion gains indestructible until end of turn. "They entrust their lives to me. I will not be unworthy."3/2

I'll give he win to Flo00. Three color isn't too hard to run, Mardu is criminally underappreciated, I love the synergy the cards all have with each other, and I like how much they feel like a ragtag group of heroes that just happen to work well together, as most adventuring parties tend to be.

Wow, nice. Thanks Jartis! Next challenge: Make a legendary card and an arsenal of spells/companions/... consisting of a rare, an uncommon and a common. The legend itself can be any rarity. There are no restrictions on card types for any card.

{Background Info}As you might know, I play a German Pen & Paper game called Arcane Codex. In one of our campains I played a little faerie named Laya. Being born without wings, she was left behind by her tribe close to a region named Rhunir (basically Scandinavia) where after a while she met a wolf beast from the north. Calling him Faex, the two form a bond and since then travel together. Laja learned being a wolf druid and used her magic to increase the size and strengthen Faex permanently, additionally being able to power up him as well as other potential companions temporarily even further in battle. Laya is always sitting on Faex's back while doing so, riding in battle together with him – which allowed her to gain knowledge in the „rider's class“ as well, allowing Faex to transfer all wounds that would be dealt to his rider to himself while being guided through battle by Laya telepathically. EDIT: Ruthless is my evergreen Lone Wolf-ability.

Judging time! {mrlozano}Rixos: A really strong walker. The static ability comprimises that you can only do one loyalty ability for the first two turns. Kind of funny that his emblem just gives you a copy of his own ability, but works well I guess. Portal: Nice flicker spell. Also has an interesting combination with Act of Treason-like effects. Inquisition: Basically a Coercion with an upside if you control Rixos. I think it would be ok to just cost it . Doer: Nice killer. I like it. It's only odd that he has a negative interaction with Rixos' and portal. {Daij_Djan}Laja + Faex: Really srtong partners. They pack quite a punch. Guidance: Seems kind of strong for only 2 mana. Nice combination of abilities tough. Especially because at most times you'll use the sac at a time where the first ability doesn't matter anymore. Savagery: Nice Pounce/wolfish Rabid Bite. I really like both entries. They are two totally different approaches to the challenge. In the end, there can only be one

{text form}Lavaduct Mountain Land : Add . , Sacrifice Lavaduct Mountain: Add . Lava Fountain Artifact At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, that player puts a melt counter on target non-Mountain land they control of their choice. That land is a Mountain for as long as it has a melt counter on it. At the beginning of each end step, if all lands on the battlefield are Mountains, remove all melt counters from them. Molten Flow Encahntment Whenever a Mountain is tapped for mana, its controller adds an additional and Molten Flow deals 1 damage to them. Envoy of Pain Creature - Dragon Flying Envoy of Pain gets +1/+0 for each damage dealt to you this turn. 2/4 Land Claim Sorcery Exile target land. If you control a Dragon, return it to the battlefield under your control.

Using Location 5! Traverse the River Sorcery Look at the top three cards of your library. You may reveal a permanent card from your hand, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then put the rest into your graveyard. If you're demented, put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature you control. (You're demented as long as there are four or more different converted mana costs among cards in your graveyard.)Maniacal Warrior Creature - Human Warrior Carnage - If you've dealt damage to a player this turn, when Maniacal Warrior enters the battlefield, it deals 2 damage to target creature. 2/2 Skies' Emnity Instant Counter target creature spell with flying. "We've all heard the stories about how the dragons ruled over our ancestors for millenia. It won't happen to us."Crazed Aeronaut Creature - Human Artificier As long as you're demented, Crazed Aeronaut has flying. (You're demented as long as there are four or more different converted mana costs among cards in your graveyard.)"Oh god, is he going to jump off the skeleton? Wait, are those... wings?"4/2 City of CartilageLand City of Bones enters the battlefield tapped. : Add . Put the top card of your library into your graveyard. Thousands of years ago, a tyrannical dragon ruled over all the land. Today, his skeleton is home to a city.

Location 5 This made me think of living in the shadow of the past. A village continues life despite the massive war that has occurred. It made me think of how to continue after such a massive event and how to remember it.

Ok then, as this is the second of my three ready-to-be-judged contests in the backlog, this challenge is now closed - please no further changes of entries! EDIT: Sorry for the delay – but here we go: Envoy of Pain has a really cool concept – but unless self-inflicted damage is a theme of your set, I personally think it'd fit better at rare. Land Claim is an interesting one – turning from a Stone Rain into a Conquer if you control a Dragon is a pretty cool concept, even though I'm not the biggest fan of a CMC5 LD spell if you don't control a Dragon and am a bit concerned about the color pie when you do. Lava Fountain is a „colorshifted“ version of Quicksilver Fountain – simple but definitely flavorful. Lavaduct Mountain is kind of impossible to evaluate. Only filtering mana surely is a downside, but being able to produce instantly feels like it could be broken somehow considering it doesn't enter the battlefield tapped (like Dwarven Ruins or Sandstone Needle). I really can't decide on whether I think of your card as rather underwhelming or dangerous. Molten Flow reminds me of Mana Flare / Heartbeat of Spring except it only affects Mountains like Gauntlet of Might – but I'm not sure I really get the card. Given the other options, would using this to accelerate your own mana really be worth the damage? It definitely doesn't feel like it would work as a hoser either.
I have to admit, I'd never have expeted anyone trying to use different parts of one of the given artworks for all cards in their entry – obviously this really helped your cards to the chosen location extremely well. So while I had some issues with some of your entries, the flavor really was top-notch. First of all, I'm pretty sure you wnated Traverse the River to reveal a permanent card among the top three cards of your library rather than from your hand. Typo aside, I quite like this card as well as demented in general. Nice take on Delirium indeed – even though making it a pseudo as well might be the better option (I'd need more cards to really be able to judge this, though). Then again, not having two pseudo abilities within the same set probably was a good choice – and I like turning Bloodthirst into one quite much (I would prefer the simple „If an opponent was dealt damage this turn“ wording, though). Maniacal Warrior does feel a bit pushed compared to other cards like Goblin Commando or Storm Fleet Pyromancer though – at least for a common. Skies' Emnity is a really clever and flavorful use of hybrid mana. Love it. 4/2 stats are rather unique for a mono-blue card, but I still like Crazed Aeronaut quite much nethertheless. If you were to turn this into a full set, it'd maybe be a better choice to rebalance this at common though. City of Cartilage is a simple but really clever support for Demented in this case and graveyard decks in general.
Nice mix of flavor and mechanics. Really liked how even blue felt quite twisted – would have loved you giving a white design a try. Well Traveled is a nice and simple common, tying together both themes of lands and +1/+1 counters. Like it. Dragon Blood Necklace reminds me of cards like Shapers of Nature. Not requiring any colored mana obviously is quite strong, but as both abilities require you to tap the Necklace, it should be slow enough to be just fine. Landfall makes its return – as it should for a Zendikar themed set. It took me a while to really get Starhome Jellyfish, but I think the concept is interesting – makes me wonder whether it could get broken with stuff like fetches or so. My only complaint would be how the card really feels mono-blue rather than green/blue. I've seen designs like Floating Isle Getaway a few times in the past, and I always like them quite much.
Looking at your entries now that we know we will return to Zendikar for real in 2020 is quite cool indeed – and it definitely fit the chosen location. Lands with additional repetative abilitiues are always hard to judge. But compared to Gavony Township, Cemetry of the Mighty's activated ability could be devinitely be cheaper – especially as you need „fuel“ as well. Curse of the Ancestors really looks nasty in all the right ways. No matter what the opponent chooses, things will go south rather quickly. Probably a bit too slow and expensive for high level play – but a cool card for kitchen table Magic. Wrath of the Forgotten has some pretty cool flavor and the potential to be just as devastating as Plague Wind in 1v1. Like it.
I really like the flavor of your cards – they definitely fit the given location well. I'd have loved to see the concept be showcased a bit at lower rarities, though. We might have only had four entries, but I really enjoyed them quite much. In the end, I had to give the win to gateways7 for such a nice mix of flavor and some new mechanics. Well done, everyone!

This has been silent for a while. I hope its ok if I just take over?
Next challenge: Make a cycle of split cards. It can be vertical or horizontal, the exact number of cards is up to you and aftermath or any other spin you want to put on them is ok as well.

Cycle is based off an older concept I tried a few times in the past (Endurance // Agility literally is one of these old designs except with a slightly changed ability wording). Might add the missing two card to finish the cycle in the future:
Btw, as it's true for Fuse Splits as well, the left half always resolves first.
