Welcome to the Deckbuilders' Challenge originally created by sdfkjgh! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a deck along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of every two weeks, a winner will be determined by forum poll, and the winner decides the challenge for the next fortnight's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our twenty-third challenge! The winner of the “Thoughtful Gifts poll“ was ZephyrPhantom with... |
{Comments} So it turns out that Ravnica block actually has all the cards needed to make a win via Bronze Bombshell possible - you get 3 Bronze Bombshells on the fields and donate them all via Sky Swallower to instantly kill your opponent for 21 damage. To increase the likelihood of this happening, we run 4x Mizzium Transreliquat to function as additional copies of it (or just to copy Izzet Signet in a pinch). If we can't get the magical 21 damage, we can still inflict 7-14 damage and use our burn cards to try and burn the opponent out while swinging with our Sky Swallower. Part of the benefit of running 4x Seal of Fire is that we can effectively 'bank' increments of 2 damage this way and throw it all at the opponent on turn 5-7 to push them into the kill range if we don't have enough Bronze Bombshells to do the job. In the event we somehow can't assemble the combo at all or get hit by something like Memoricide or Surgical Extraction, we can still play as a more traditional control deck that attempts to counter or remove all opposition until we can land a big creature to swing in and defeat our opponent. |
And the challenge issued by our winner was... "The next reason “bad” cards exist goes to the heart of what makes a trading card game tick." - Mark Rosewater, "When Cards Go Bad"Magic has had a history of laughably bad cards throughout the years: Rockstar Hits, where the sheer badness of the card transcends any context: Format Specialists, cards that do very well in one format while being bizarrely terrible or useless in others: Meme Creatures, more recent all stars that stand poised to last the test of time: and many more. A good portion of these cards have low Gatherer ratings and often cost pocket change to obtain. Your challenge is to make a deck that features one or more memorably bad cards that could still play well in your format of choice, be it Kamigawa Pauper Block Tiny Leaders, Draft, or or any other format. Good luck! Please provide a decklist using deckstats, tappedout or similar. Feel free to add some comments as they will be included in the final poll. Please provide a deck name as well as choose a card to represent your deck in the poll. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Scornful Egotist actually has a very decent reason to exist - it's a grey ogre that you can use to fuel various effects that care about high CMC.
Hmm... T3 play Egotist face-down, T4 Flip + Eldritch Evolution into Progenitus? Nah, that's too slow for Modern.

Ssshhh, don't say that he's actually good, or else I might lose the only creature that interests me in this challenge.

Surprised no one here know of the legendary bad(ass?)ery of ALL HAIL THE GREAT LORD EGOTIST. Just to be clear, you're allowed to use cards outside the list as your "bad card" - the list mostly consists of cards that have had some stint of fame/memes for being bad or useless (as seen with Scornful Egotist) to get people thinking. The one exception to this list, Paliano, the High City, is actually a catch-all stand-in for similar cards like Command Tower and Arcane Signet that can technically be run outside of their base format without functioning, and serves as an example for how one could find various cards that are conventionally or unconventionally 'bad'.

Going to give this a bump in hopes of getting some more jank on the table.

Checking before I brew, but... is Blood Funnel memorably bad? I feel like this challenge is underspecified. 2.2 rating on Gatherer and a quick search indicates it mostly results in jank combo decks, so yeah, seems good to me. I'm not asking for an essay to justify why a card's bad, a snappy one liner for context will do. (I'd like to think people can tell if you're trying BS your way through the challenge with something like " Swords to Plowshares is bad!") Re: underspecified - It's par the course for how subjective the idea of a 'bad card' is, haha. Honestly a big inspiration for this challenge was how negatively a majority of people reacted to Divine Gambit and the resulting blowback from other players arguing it was meant to be Limited removal only.

StandardA Hatebears Human tribal Death and Taxes style deck that tries to indirectly mitigate Divine Gambit's issue by playing a large amount of cards like Containment Priest, Giant Killer, Sigrid, God Favored, and Lavabrink Venturer to invalidate the followup threat. This deck initially featured Hushbringer and Eidolon of Obstruction but I took them out for the benefit of being able to play Rally the Ranks which gives our deck a lot more clout as a regular white weenie deck. We essentially trade the raw power of a more straightforward white weenie deck for being able to have a large number of creatures that can double as removal, allowing us to switch into a more controlling matchup easily if needed. For budget version, replace 3x Drannith Magistrate (who's pretty much half the cost of the entire deck by himself) with 3x Seasoned Hallowblade.

Personally, I don't mind - always love to see more entries I'll set up the new challenges in a few hours, but I'll gladly give this one some more time

I had some inspiration (and a bit of time): Bloody EggsThe goal here is simple: have out two copies of Mirrodin Besieged, one on Mirran and one on Phyrexian. Then play Blood Funnel, and use all of our cantripping artifacts, artifact-based scry, and our artifact-based looters to fill our graveyard with artifacts, letting us win on our end step.
