Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and twenty-forth challenge! The winners of the "I'm done done." poll were Daij_Djan (left) and spazlaz (right) with...And the challenge issued by one of our winners was... 2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. Design a card surrounding something that has happened this year. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

As a kiwi, our early and strict lock-down has certainly been the most acclaimed event this year. While we may be (for the most part) back to normal, here's one for all those who have to presently struggle through this pandemic. Hope you are all staying well and safe.

Just leaving my first idea here for now: Going Downhill Enchantment At the beginning of your end step, put a chaos counter on ~. At the beginning of each player's upkeep step, for each chaos counter on ~, that player loses 3 life unless they sacrifice a nonland permanent or discard a card.

{Render} Devastating Bushfires Sorcery Multikicker Choose target land, then choose another target Forest or Plains for each time Devastating Bushfires was kicked. Destroy each of them.

115th U.S. Congress Legendary Enchantment Council’s dilemma—At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, starting with that player, each player votes for progress or inaction. If inaction is voted for, end the turn and each player loses 5 life. Otherwise, each player adds one mana of any type for each progress vote. Until end of turn, this mana doesn’t empty as steps and phases end.
Was this even just last year? I can't keep track. My spirit is so broken with scandal fatigue, even the individual pieces are broken, to the fourth power, and all those pieces are wearing camo fatigues.

The stuff that's been going on this year has been frankly depressing, so here's a more light-hearted riff on the looting that's happened. If this is too far off the original challenge, let me know and I'll make a different one.

Sick Easter Instant Put a -1/-1 counter on each Rabbit and each Egg. Creatures with -1/-1 counters on them can’t attack or block this turn.

This whole year has just been a catastrophe after catastrophe... a descent into inferno, I would say.

Covid-19 seems to have been one of the biggest factors of 2020, so here's a Pandemic Plague for y'all. Pandemic PlagueEnchantment When Pandemic Plague enters the battlefield, put a -1/-1 counter on up to three target creatures. At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, that player may remove up to one -1/-1 counter from a creature they control. If they do, that creature gains defender until end of turn. Whenever a creature with one or more -1/-1 counters on it blocks, becomes blocked, or fights another creature, put that many -1/-1 counters on the creature it is blocking, blocked by, or fighting.

Not realistic enough! Make it so that for each Treasure token that would be made, if any player pays 1 life, that token isn't made, to reflect the gop's sociopathic unwillingness to help anyone but themselves, and then mebbe we'll talk.

Hi everyone,
sorry for not getting the poll up - I've caught a tonsillitis and have slept roughly 20 hours per day with a high fever since Monday night. First time touching my smartphone since then as I'm finally getting better, but I'm definitely not able to set up the poll today either. Unless another team member has the time to step in and set it up, this challenge will run for an additional week as it has a few times in the past.

Ral: You're just using this as an excuse to take a break from writing the column, aren't you, you idealess, no-talent hack?
Quiet, you. Show some respect for our Belovéd Editor.
Ral: You're sickening people with your brown-nosing, you know that, right?
Teferi: Get better soon, man.

I struggled with what colour to make this one. Punisher effects are primary in Red, and secondary in Black, and the card's effects of gaining treasure or creatures feels more Red than Black. On the other hand, it also feels more Black than Red to "curse" a land, and Rebels are secondary in Black, but never seen in Red. Ultimately, I decided to split the difference, and I'm still not sure it was the right call.

First of all, thank you regarding the design. That said, you're ascribing intent to my design without me having ever said what events I was referencing, let alone my personal opinions on any given event that I might be alluding to. Secondly, I find you calling me naive - particularly with regards to that ignorance of my position or intent - to be horribly condescending, patronizing, and frankly to show a great deal of insensitivity in its own way. Thirdly, trying to police tone never accomplishes anything but generating hostility. Frankly, it's just best to keep actual discussion of world events to a minimum outside of topics made specifically for that purpose. Leaving aside whether it's "on topic" or not, it's impossible to separate what's going on in the world from the politics right now, and political discussions inevitably lead to flaring tempers, hurt feelings, and can very quickly spill over into massive arguments. Relevant or not, it would be disrespectful to the staff and other contestants to hijack the thread to espouse political views, no matter how noble or justified they might be - because I guarantee that even if you and I agree on all points, someone will have different views.

I know this isn't the first "real life events" prompt we've had this year (pretty sure this is the third, at the very least), but this is definitely the one that's drawn the most politically related cards so far.
Let's try not to get too pushy about what the cards represent unless the card is extremely insensitive - feel free to ask the mod team (sans Daij, as he is sick) to take a second look at cards if necessary.

I'm chiming in to say that this is inherently a political contest, given the prompt, so light political discourse will be allowed here, as long as it doesn't completely impede the contest (aka is directly related to a user's contribution to the contest).
Kefke, whether intentional or not, your card bears the connotation of implying that the protests over police brutality are lawless mayhem. If that was your intent, you should accept that it's entirely fair for anyone to point that out. If it wasn't, I believe you've sorely missed some historical context, and I would urge you to reevaluate your card with sdfkjgh's point in mind.

Ah yes, because the entire world is America... That aside, I think that people are assigning moral weight to colours of mana, and that's a little weird. Neither Black nor Red have any inherent moral weight to them in the context of the game. For instance, Sorin is a primarily Black-mana character (mono Black in about half his appearances), but is one of the "good guys" of Magic. There's also Liliana, who was a member of the Gatewatch, who are typically acknowledged to be the Good Guys of the Magic stories. In fact, speaking of the Gatewatch, there's also Kaya ( ). Or I could mention, Windgrace, one of Urza's "Nine Titans" that he recruited to battle Phyrexia, who was Black, Red, Green. Yes, I could pick a colour combination that people would find more happy and sunshine-y, but from a design standpoint, if I am trying to make a good card, Red/Black is the colour combination that makes the most sense, and neither Red nor Black carries an inherent moral judgement. What do these colours mean? : Power, self-interest, death, sacrifice, uninhibited.
Also, lets throw in one more line from the blurb here, "Although if taken to extremes, black's selfishness and lack of ethical restraint can result in tragedy, at its most basic level black is not inherently evil. It has a very cynical world view, and its core philosophy is that of self-determination and release from society-imposed limitations." (Emphasis mine.) : Freedom, emotion, active, impulsive, destructive. Here's one for Red, "Red loves life much more than any other color and so it believes that all people must live to its fullest." (Again, just grabbing the most relevant line to make my point.) You can look at as being the "Chaotic Evil" of colour combinations if you want to. Sure, that's one valid way to interpret it, and there are a lot of cards that back up that interpretation. However, by what the colours in Magic actually mean, it is equally valid to see it as the combination of opposing oppression by any means. I certainly never said which I view it as, and I don't appreciate all the tut-tutting I'm getting by people who decided that their interpretation was the only one possible.

kefke: I was a little too incautious with my words, and assumed far too much on your part, and for that, I'm sorry. I thought that your card design was implying that the majority of the violence was coming from the protesters, and right or wrong, I should've conveyed that impression better, while at the same time explicitly mentioning that I didn't necessarily believe that you felt that way yourself.
Again, I apologise for my poor communication.
