Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and eleventh challenge! The winner of the "Exam Week" poll was kinotherapy with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... First challenge of the new forums, how exciting! Alongside the return to Dominaria, the many callbacks and new rules/formatting, and Magic's 25th anniversary, it feels like the perfect time for a lazy meta contest. Design a card that calls back — in flavour, mechanics, or both — to some aspect of Magic or MSE history.I've left this open-ended intentionally because I want to see your different interpretations: you could design a card that would fit well in Dominaria, or a "Return to X" card. You could design a modern take on a classic concept, something that refers to a specific card, either real or custom, or one that fits into an MSE set. You could even make a Saga if you have the photoshop skills (or if the template is ready by the time this contest starts) Note: Feel free to note what your card calls back to, the reference will be included in the poll! ~Daij_Djan To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

My entry for this week might be slightly inspired by my Penada set, but it's really rather subtle EDIT: Fixed misspelling on the render

Magic and MSE you say? Liege of Vectron Creature - Human Spellshaper , , Discard a card: Target opponent loses X life and you gain X life, where X is your devotion to Vectron. (Each time you've praised Vectron this turn counts towards your devotion to Vectron.)"My Lord... I still remember."1/2 Gonna add a render some day

imgur.com/GVJc1h1.pngLegends of Old World Enchantment (When another world permanent enters the battlefield, this is put into its owner’s graveyard.)Multicolored legendary creature spells cost an addition 2 to cast. Multicolored legendary creatures lose all abilities. The way old legends should be; expensive and vanilla. jk

Something from magic's history? What about the guy who's name is practically synonymous with history itself?

quazerflame I was so tempted to post my Urza planeswalker too, but I'm not gonna steal your thunder. Here's a call back to the early books: Born of a house dedicated to Green and Blue magic, Galin was exiled and eventually returned under the pseudo-name Garth One-Eye. He fought in the magical gladiatorial arena; showcasing his skills to tap into all mana types, regardless of his heritage. Being a man of small frame, having been described as a 'scarecrow', his specialty was summoning creatures to fight for him. While lacking the 'spark' of a planeswalker, Garth One-Eye was still one of the most powerful wizards of the era.

Here's a Saga-shaped throwback to my very first block. I got deep into the lore and rooted hard for Mirrodin Pure. Little did I know that another destiny had been planned from the very beginning... Mirrodin's Compleation Enchantment - Saga I: Create X 1/1 white Horror artifact creature tokens, where X is the number of artifacts you control. II: Target creature gets +X/+X or -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of artifacts you control. III: Draw X cards and target player loses X life and you gain X life, where X is the number of artifacts you control. Here's some of my design thoughts: The mana cost is all-but-red, because Urabrask is busy doing his own thing in the Furnace Layer and harboring Mirran refugees. The whole card depends on artifacts you control, because Phyrexia took hold on Mirrodin largely due to its nature as an artificial, metal plane. Ability one makes sure that you have a sufficiently mighty Phyrexian army. I picked white for the Horror tokens because of Elesh Norn's priests - while white Phyrexia wasn't well-represented in the original block, token creation is certainly a white ability and I wanted to give the Machine Orthodoxy a nod. Ability two lets you fight the war, either buffing one of your creatures to break through the lines or just straight up kill off their strongest resistance. Ability three wins you the war (and likely the game, if they haven't cleared out your board or blown up the enchantment). You can harness Jin-Gitaxias' knowledge engines and Sheoldred's dread power to tip the game massively in your favor. This card might be overpowered; I'm the last person to have playtested it. Hopefully the 7 mana cost and 4 color requirement make it balanced enough, as well as needing enough artifacts to make it work and keeping them alive through your opponent's interference. I think it makes for a compelling minigame, as they try to stamp out your infestation while you try to maximize the Phyrexian presence on the plane for your ultimate victory.

White Lotus Artifact , sacrifice ~: Add three mana of any one color. Activate this ability only if an opponent controls two or more lands than you. Reference to (obviously) Black Lotus. White likes to play "catch-up" with mana. Debating: - Rarity at - Costing ( , , , etc.) - How many more lands an opponent needs - Pitching idea entirely

Double throwback! The whole thing with the Theros gods holding instruments from a couple of years ago and Magic's best mechanic. Ever.

MSE History you say? {Tha Refaranc} The Ishyn are a cult in Festenya. They took their time building up numbers and influence until they could take the city. And stuff. Huge thanks to cajun for the Saga prototype. The template is not ready yet, but together he and I were able to make this amalgam

It goes without saying Created's Fervor Sorcery Choose one- -Until your next upkeep, creatures can’t attack and their abilities can’t be activated.[/li] -Until your next upkeep, players can’t cast noncreature spells.[/li] Long since the story of Creatio's Created permeated the multiverse, remaents of his vast power remain.

Here's my attempt. The mentioned keyword abilities are all the (still evergreen) ones that have been printed on green two-drops throughout the years. This guy really knows how to bear. He also knows how to elk and spider, but that's just a tad less impressive.Amalgam Druid Creature - Human Druid At the beginning of each combat, Amalgam Druid gains hexproof until end of turn if you control a creature with hexproof. The same is true for deathtouch, defender, first strike, flying, haste, reach, trample, and vigilance. 2/2

My entry is represents the deadly poison counters. This design is not a Phyrexia Infect card, but is like the original cards like Pit Scorpion{Entry} 1 Edit: Turned into a sorcery from a creature based on feedback. 2 Edit: increased mana cost from to also wording it so the tokens don't have an EtB effect. (based on feedback) Question: Are the img on the front page of the last CotW becoming a clickable link to the CotW thread or the newest CotW Contest? Like on the old page?

Notes on the cards that have been posted (that I have something to say about) @miku: What do you do with the four to seven cards you don't exile? Do they go on the bottom of your library? Back on top in any order? Etc. Also odd that you @daij: Ya misspelled "postpone" luv @gorgonzola: Depending on whether praising Vectron is an out-of-game action or a real thing, this card is either very bad or very, very good. viriss: The "retro" mana cost has the slight problem of impeding this card's playability. I also think it'd be appropriate if this hit planeswalkers. @quazer: The most powerful walker of all time have 2 loyalty seems... slightly off. darknova: Not very , in my opinion. spazlaz: I feel like Spike, Tournament Grinder did this joke better. @gurfle: Huh... this is interesting. Notably worse than Black Lotus in that you can't use it until turn two at least. @aargh: Gaining hexproof until end of turn is pretty useless. Gaining defender until end of turn is actively harmful. I also think this has no business being at common, but that's just me @pixi: ...why does this not just make tokens.

@aargh: Gaining hexproof until end of turn is pretty useless. Gaining defender until end of turn is actively harmful. I also think this has no business being at common, but that's just me Hey, thanks for the comment. Gaining hexproof is pretty useless, yea, but not completely. It's there for the reason I mentioned, same with defender. As for the defender being actively harmful, I kinda disagree. It's really only harmful if you don't play the card right. Defender tribal is also a (very niche but fun) thing. Also also, Odric, Lunarch Marshal mentions hexproof as well, if that counts for something. On the rarity, are you saying it should be uncommon instead? I was thinking pretty hard about it when I made the card, and I determined you needed to jump through too many hoops for the card to become really good. When matched up against modern common two-drops, I think this fits in there, but in the upper end of the bracket.

@pixi: Not to keep "but what if"ing you, but why does the ability have to be an ETB on the tokens? If you're doing it as a sorcery anyway, why not go with
... and when I put it that way, I realize that maybe it ought to cost a bit more, especially at common.

The old forum, as many of you are aware, had a Featured Sets version in which the community enshrined sets it found particularly meritorious. Whether those sets were worth the merit is another question entirely... Thus, a reference to that institution. May its new incarnation be more discerning. (I promised I'd make a card to hose qui's, and I keep my promises )

Sisters' Chosen Creature — Human Samurai Vigilance Fealty — ~ gets +1/+1 and has indestructible as long as you control a legendary permanent that shares a color with it. "Michiko Konda swore such suffering would never again come to pass. We are here to ensure that." 2/3 Continues with the "legendary matters" theme of Kamigawa.

Almost 6 years ago, one of the topics I started on the original forum was for a roleplaying game that involved creating your own character, traveling from plane to plane, and dueling against foes. There were table top RP elements that involved rolling dice and acting out as your character, but every now and then the players would have to play a game of Magic: the Gathering against either a boss that couldn't be defeated through normal means, a natural disaster where they were on a clock, or protecting NPCs from token hordes. We barely got to play any of the campaign, but I have a notebook filled with story notes somewhere. I did manage to save and HEAVILY update and improve upon the original rules; they can be found here and maybe this is something I can look into running again some time ... But my card is a representation of the original story I had in mind. Sagas seem like the perfect way to represent a story, so I choose to do just that. The Guild Wars: Prelude Legendary Enchantment - Saga (As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after VI.)
I, II, III, IV, V. Search your library for a planeswalker with a different subtype than any other card exiled by this and exile it face up. If you can't, sacrifice this. VI. Cast each card exiled by this without paying their mana cost. Those planeswalkers enter the battlefield with five additional loyalty counters on them. Niv-Mizzet grinned, his plan finally coming to fruition, "You are all ready."I originally had a much larger, more convoluted card than this ... But I think this card gets the point across. Building a team of five, worthy people so that Niv-Mizzet can grant them the ability to ignite their sparks. Which was the premise of the campaign. ~Zuty
