Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and fifth challenge! The winner of the "Know Thine Enemy" poll was fluffydeathbringer with...And the challenge issued by one of our runner-ups was... Design an artifact that taps for mana with converted mana cost 2 or less. (Nonexistent counts as zero.) To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post.And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Huh, didn't see that coming. Well, in that case... Colorful Box Artifact ~ enters the battlefield with two mystery counters on it. , Remove a mystery counter from ~: Add one mana of any color. Then, if ~ has no mystery counters on it, transform it. It could hold anything you want...////////// Mox AgateArtifact : Add . ...but a life without surprise can be quite dull.May make a render for this one later in the week.

EDIT: Nerfed it by making the mana ability also cost 1 life to activate. Pretty happy with it now. Also added some flavor text.
I probably need to work on this a bit more (seems a little pushed as is), but I just wanted to get the idea out there.
It starts out resembling the mana myr of Mirrodin, but slowly turns into a lumbering monster, unrecogizable from its original self.

I designed an entire 5-card cycle of this:
Seed and Earth Artifact If you control an Island, Seed and Earth costs less to cast, but enters the battlefield tapped. : Add to your mana pool.

I'm gonna bend the rules by making an artifact that "indirectly" adds mana.

Complex Apparatus Artifact As an additional cost to cast Complex Apparatus, reveal an Artificer from your hand or pay . : Add one mana of any color.

A bunch of things going on here for balance, ruling, and flavor reasons. Edit: Added flavor text, tweaked balance and formatting {Old Version}

Keep in mind that like Chrome Mox, this won't generate any mana, not even when exiling colorless cards like artifacts/Eldrazis/lands because colorless is not a color. {Old version without legendary status}

This is my entry. I had the concept since Monday, but it took me a while to find an execution I liked. {And here is a "normal" version, for those who don't want a headache:} If this was in an actual set, the idea would be that every time you get the card in a booster, it's 50/50 which version you get.

collex : You'll need to have directions as to how to prove that you have an identical card in your deck, not just your word that there is one. Also, am I correct to assume that "identical" means more than the usual "same name," i.e. it has to have same art and expansion symbol? Perhaps a better way to word it would be: Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may search your library for a card with the same name, art, and expansion symbol as that spell and reveal it. If you do, untap ~. Then shuffle that card into your library.

Perhaps a better way to word it would be: Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may search your library for a card with the same name, art, and expansion symbol as that spell and reveal it. If you do, untap ~. Then shuffle that card into your library. I'd see your point if this was black-border, but this is silver-border, which means it's made to be played among friends, in a casual setting, and not with a bunch of Spikes at a tournament. So I don't really see the need to complicate the card with burden of proof. At worst, have the player reveal their deck at the end of the game, like you do with Morph cards. If that player cheated, then they are an asshole and you can stop playing with them. If I were to add some more text however, your wording is close, but not quite there, since it only check your library. So if the card is in your graveyard, or on the battlefield, or in exile, or in your hand, then it won't work, and that would be counterintuitive. Which is why I used the word "deck", specifically. And yup, identical means everything must be the same - silver border allows you to care about the property of the individual card in front of you. So, for example, the mirrored version and non-mirrored version of Mirror Mox would not trigger each other - on purpose.

collex: Dude, if you're gonna do the joke, commit to it FULLY! The legal text in the bottom border should ALSO be backwards!

collex: Dude, if you're gonna do the joke, commit to it FULLY! The legal text in the bottom border should ALSO be backwards! Yeah, I thought so at first, but then I realize that if this was a real card, that text would NOT be backward, because it is legalese that is the same on all card, so they likely do not have the logistical capability to change it for one card. Hence why I only mirrored certain things.You'll notice I also did not mirror the frame itself, only the text - the embossing is still the same on both version. I do resent the accusation that I did not commit fully, however. Keeping the legalese and the frame the same but mirroring the text was WAY more work than flipping the whole thing. Flipping the whole thing is easy - you open the image in the basic windows image editor, hit the flip button, and voilà. Here, I had to open GIMP and cut out every block of text invidually and flip it and paste it back on a blank frame. It took me hours.

I don't want to blame, i just want to point out some case law about this specific topic: if this was a real card, that text would NOT be backwards [...] so they likely do not have the logistical capability to change it for one card. Given that they did this, this, this, this and this (Well, this one is not a huge logistical effort to make though.), i doubt they wouldn't flip this legal text.

Given that they did this, this, this, this and this (Well, this one is not a huge logistical effort to make though.), i doubt they wouldn't flip this legal text. Except all of those are from Unhinged and Unglued, where each frame was dobe individually by a graphic designer. That's not how they do things anymore - now they use the standard frame, because of cost issues. This means no more weird frame like you linked. The only reason why the third Infernal Spawn of Evil is called "Infernius Spawnington III, Esq." and not "Infernal Spawn of Infernal Spawn of Infernal Spawn of Evil"is because without designing each frame individually, they could not give him a longer type line like they did in Unhinged. Furthermore, the legal text at the bottom is used for collating. Which means it must be readable by the collation machine - mirrored text would not be. The only reason Old Fogey amd Blast from the Past from Unsanctionned got away with no collating info is because Unsanctionned is a sealed box, non-randomized product. So yeah, I stand by my decision. Not mirroring the legal text at the bottom makes the card more realistic.
