Gosta, Defender of Kusho Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Flash, First Strike When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 5/5 blue Wall creature token named Tidal Wave with defender. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step. Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if you control four or more creatures with flash, first strike, or defender, exile Gosta, then return him to the battlefield transformed under him owner’s control. 3/3 // Gosta, Champion of the WavesLegendary Planeswalker - Gosta : Create a 5/5 blue Wall creature token named Tidal Wave with defender. : Draw a card for each creature with Flash, First strike, or Defender you control. : You get an emblem with "Whenever a creature with flash, first strike, or defender enters the battlefield under your control, you may exile target creature." Gosta Dirk was apparently able to cast Tidal Wave, so I decided to reflect that here. He's also a really powerful warrior, attempting to 2-for-1 any overly bold invaders that try to invade his domain. He also doubles as a keyword tribal commander that provides another option to the various Defenders-matter decks out there or just a more generically good creature based commander.

While I'm actually pretty (?) sure I'm not fluffy, you're absolutely right as far as the wording error is concerned
I'll probably fix the render - if I don't find the time or simply forget about it please pretend I did anyway

Llawan, Cephalid Overlord Legendary Creature - Cephalid Noble : Put the top card of your library into your graveyard. If there are ten or more cards in your graveyard, exile Llawan, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control. 3/3 // Llawan, One with the TidesLegendary Planeswalker - Llawan You may cast instant and sorcery cards from your graveyard. If a card cast this way would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead. Whenever one or more cards are put into your graveyard from your library, put a loyalty counter on Llawan. : Draw two cards, then discard a card.

Judging time! I'm gonna be breif, because I have errands to run soon.
ZephyrPhantom: I really like everything about your entry.
Daij_Djan: Your Pianna is somewhat interesting, but there's no really enough here that excites me. Also, according to the lore, Pianna is supposed to be female.
MacabreAurora: There's just too many things here that are just not quite good enough. The front face stacks up very poorly against real, actual baby Jace, the second static ability of the back face would be a lot more exciting if it triggered off of a card going to your graveyard from anywhere, and the payoff of the whole feels a bit too blah and too easily emulated by other, better/easier to use cards.
Winner: ZephyrPhantom, with Daij_Djan second by a length and a half.

Thanks for the win!
Your next challenge is to design a Commander that has something to do with basic lands. Blood Moon-style, ramp, etc... as long as basic lands are a big factor in how it plays, that's what matters!
Good luck!

Plentiful Egreji - Legendary Creature - Dryad Basic lands you control have hexproof. Whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery spell or activates an ability that solely targets basic lands or searches for one or more basic land cards, you may pay . If you do, each other player copies that spell or ability. Each of those players may choose new targets for their copy. 0/3 Egreji believes that everyone has a right to as much land as they want. Egreji is also very amused by spells like Stone Rain and Plow Under - it is not Egreji's fault that others do not understand the harmony of nature!

How cheap can we make a 'walker?
Servant of the Masters Legendary Planeswalker--Librarian Servant of the Masters enters the battlefield with an additional X loyalty counters on it, where X is the amount of mana spent to cast it. : Search your library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. : Search your library for a planeswalker card with converted mana cost of X and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. Looks like it, yeah. Plenty of great submissions just from a first skim so let's see how they all stack up against each other: Lady Mapi - Pretty hilarious synergy between the two abilities that feels like you've included all three colors in justified ways. I like the flexibility of being a group hug or a mass LD commander, or perhaps even both. I think my main gripe is that the LD-side of Egreji punishes playing basic lands, which is kind of awkward when most EDH manabases will try and pack every single nonbasic they can afford for mana fixing. He does a good job of justifying punching-upwards on a budget with using as many basics as possible but at the same time he makes other players feel bad for using basics, which is kind of awkward. Small wording hiccup: "that solely targets" -> "that only targets". thaneofglamis - I feel like that last ability is a little weak compared to the others but other than that this is a pleasantly straightfoward Commander who does what his colors wants to do well. Probably set ready. sdfkjgh - Repeatable Rampant Growth for 0? I really feel like that should say "hand" instead of battlefield... Alternatively, it might've been smarter to just cost it at WUBRG, which I think would make the card flow a bit better as a Planeswalker value tutor of sorts. Flo00 - The wording is a bit vague but I think I follow - it rewards having two of each thing on the battlefield, basically. Try "permanent you control that shares a name with another permanent you control" It's a great idea and a fresh take on Simic permanents-matter that WoTC has been pushing lately, though I kind of feel like a single line of flavortext would help explain why and how his mechanics work like this flavorfully. I think it's alright that he potentially works better out of Commander than he does in it - it wouldn't be the first time a Commander targeted card turned out to be a better in another format. gamma3 - About as straightforward as it gets and I think he would be a good introductory commander to players playing five color. Missing rarity (granted, not as big a deal in Commander, but still.) but otherwise set-ready. SilentKobold - Soft nonbasic hate, interesting. I'm guessing the idea is that these pings either add up or your throw in doublers like Torbran to make this thing turn into a clock for people just tapping all their fancy nonbasics and mana acceleration artifacts constantly. I admittedly think it trades one feel-bad for another - namely, instead of not playing the game via no lands, people are now feeling bad for playing the game via tapping lands, but I think LD Commanders are always walking that fine line and this one ultimately offers the out of "Dude, just play basics", so I think he's okay. Set-ready, though he might cause a few salty players at whatever table he appears at. Jartis - The unique tribal was cute, and at first glance the effect seemed really basic, and then I got the second half of the effect and went "This is really clever!" A good spin on Seedborn Muse type effects while promoting a unique mix of group-hug and flash-matters play. I would be excited to brew this - set-ready, and if anyone's looking for a spicy new Commander to use, I'd say this one is definitely one worth sleeving up a proxy of. HvT - Now this is an interesting way to both bring back a 'fair' landwalk effect and a 'fair' land destruction effect. I think you do a good job of offering two sufficiently powerful effects that normally would be considered overly swingy/unfun in other contexts and balancing it out by making it the opponent's choice. Makes for very political games that don't create obvious feel-bads. Set-ready, and I'd argue play-ready as well. 1st: Jartis2nd: HvT

Thank you so much for the kind words, and also for the win! I debated the merits of giving mono-green mana when it wasn't their turn vs something like card draw, but ultimately I figured flash effects, instants, and big cost activated abilities were warrant enough. Anyway, enough design talk, on to the next challenge: Design a commander with Council's Dilemma or Will of the Council.

Krona, Shepherd of Advancement Legendary Creature--Elemental Advisor Shroud Krona, Shepherd of Advancement can’t be sacrificed. Council’s dilemma—At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, starting with that player, each player votes for development or regression. If regression is voted for, return each other nonland permanent to its owner’s hand. Otherwise, each player may draw a card, then that player may put a land card from their hand onto the battlefield. 3/5
This entry /|\ was inspired by this:
115th U.S. Congress Legendary Enchantment Council’s dilemma—At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, starting with that player, each player votes for progress or inaction. If inaction is voted for, end the turn and each player loses 5 life. Otherwise, each player adds one mana of any type for each progress vote. Until end of turn, this mana doesn’t empty as steps and phases end.
I may have been a wee bit bitter about a few things when I designed it.

While I like this concept for a corrupt official, I feel it could admittedly be a little unfun. EDIT: Softened the resource locking to allow for a little more interaction. While the template is a little odd and still fairly wordy, I think it could pass at mythic. Publius, Senate Collector Legendary Creature - Vedalken Advisor Council’s Judgment — At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, starting with you, each player votes for cards, creatures or casting. Until end of turn, ~ loses each ability with the most votes. Cards — If a player would draw a card, that player mills it instead unless they pay . Creatures — Creatures can’t attack or block unless their controller pays . Casting — Spells cost more to cast. 2/3

{Magic and Gatherings - An MTG D&D Campaign}I had run a D&D campaign with some friends taking place in the MtG Multiverse. A lot of things happened, a lot of places were visited, and quite a few recurring characters were created. One such character was Havax.
Havax was a Lich, created for the sole purpose to guard a powerful multiverse threatening entity. A long time ago, a party of Planeswalkers had come across this threat and, after many many attempts to subdue it, finally sealed it away. One member of the party created Havax to ensure that the entity would never regain enough power to escape. This entity was sealed inside of Havax's Phylactery, where he continuously devours and consumes the prisoner's spirit and energy.
Over time, many other Planeswalkers have come to Havax to have him watch over and guard various threats and dangerous Artifacts. And over time, the plane he lived on became a massive sprawling prison complex.
Now, the main point of this story is to talk about the character Havax, but to also set up a preface. After the campaign had ended, I had a thought that I submitted to my friends: Custom Commander.
We would work together and create Legendary Creatures based on the characters in the campaign and then build EDH/Commander decks for these custom Commanders. Havax was one of my favorite characters to show up, and seeing as I was the DM and didn't have a character as a player, I chose to make a deck around him.

Gorloon, the Rage Puppet Legendary Creature - Rhino Warrior Haste Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to Gorloon, the Rage Puppet. Will of the council — At the beginning of combat during your turn, each player votes for one of your opponents. Gorloon attacks one of the players with the most votes this turn if able. 7/4 I wanted to make something between Ruhan and Zurgo. I didn't want to enable Zurgo's "wrath tribal" yet still wnated to protect him from just attacking into a bigger creature. This is the result. Thanks for the advice gamma3. That gave me enough space in the text box to sneak haste onto it

Flo00 it might be cleaner wording-wise to combine the "attacks each turn" and will of the council ability into one: "At the beginning of combat, starting with you, each player votes ... attacks the player with the most votes this turn if able." Edit - My own entry: Commandante Schmitchelkoff Creature - Human Artificer Wizard Will of the Council - When Commandante Schmitchelkoff enters the battlefield, starting with you, each player votes for art or artifice. If art gets more votes, draw a card for each enchantment you control. If artifice gets more votes, draw a card for each artifact you control. If the vote is tied, destroy all artifacts and enchantments. 2/2

Egreji as a mass LD commander doesn't necessarily punish running basic lands - you could copy a Frenzied Tilling or Geomancer's Gambit that targets a nonbasic land. Plus, you can pull off plays with cards like Field of Ruin that outright punish people for not running enough basics. Or, alternatively, turn it into politics. Hit your own basic lands with stuff like Molten Rain or Stone Rain, and let the rest of the table sort out the explosions. --- As for this prompt... hmm, I'll think about it.

Unfortunately power outages worked against me, but the judging is here: (Note: This was probably the hardest challenge I've judged. If I missed some aspect of how your card works, I apologize. I tried my best to parse what was in front of me. If you feel my judgement was unfair, feel free to respond here or in my messages and we can discuss it. I can't in good faith change the chosen winner, but I don't want anyone to feel like they got shafted.) { sdfkjgh}I'm not sure this really works as a council's dilemma. My initial reading of the effect assumed it was a will of the council, because council's dilemma tends to be good for the turn player regardless of what gets voted for. The way it is now, if anyone votes for regression, it bounces the entire board except lands and this card. That may be the intention, but I think this would just lead to eternal stalemates and unfun board states. In fact, it probably even benefits decks with haste, since they would essentially be playing into an empty boardstate, and since this card isn't red, it's unlikely you have much of it in your own deck. All that said, it does read like a will of the council, and even if read that way, I don't know that it really works. Again, the way it's worded, if regression ever wins the vote, it will bounce the whole board, not just the player whose turn it is, unless I'm missing something major. I can't think of many situations where a group is willing to do that, especially since there will likely be at least one vote against them to start with, and progress just needs the tie. I don't think it's an inherently bad idea, and it's entirely possible that I'm missing something, but I keep reading over it and I'm just still not sure of its intended use, beyond the obvious (unfortunately realistic) satire. { SilentKobold}First off, I'm not sure what council's judgement is, so I'll assume you were going for council's dilemma, just with more than two options. Just like the card above, this doesn't really seem to fit the mechanic, in that it never really benefits the player that controls it. I can't think of many times where your opponents won't vote along with you on your turn, leaving you to work through two of the three effects. Meanwhile, while not your turn, you will probably end up being the deciding vote for what gets cancelled out, at which point you're choosing what the least helpful thing to do to your opponent is, as opposed to the most harmful thing. There are even situations in 3 or 6 player (god forbid) games where you could just end up with a vanilla 2/3 for 5 mana. There's just not a lot of good options for the player that controls this card. Again, I don't feel like it's an inherently bad idea, but it definitely needs some work to make it worth spending mana on. {burntsquirrelman}An etb will of the council with the power to back it up, not to mention access to white for blinking shenanigans. Limiting the choice to permanents you don't control means the situation is going to be a win for you except in incredibly rare edge cases (I couldn't think of any off the top of my head, but commander is a big format). Plus it's a solid creature to boot. 2 power is nothing great, but that 5 toughness makes you feel a lot safer swinging in, and vigilance keeps it available for defense or other tap-based effects that Orzhov decks can often grant. I like this, it's really solid. { Flo00}A 7/4 with haste and protection from combat damage for 4 is maybe a bit strong, even if you don't exactly get to pick where it's swinging. You're gonna want to beat down each of your opponents eventually, 7 power is gonna down most blockers, and preventing combat damage protects it against dying to infect as well, so all in all it's pretty safe regardless of where it goes. It's an interesting take, and one that, like I said, is never really bad for you, I just wonder if it's maybe a bit too good for the cost. That's without mentioning you could equip it with Blade of Selves and essentially negate the drawback entirely, which doesn't seem that out of place for a Boros combat-matters deck. Like I said, good. Maybe too good. {gamma3}First off, just an interesting idea. I can't think of any other card that is friendly to artifacts and enchantments. I also like that you could potentially not run either and just use it hoping to wipe out enchantment or artifact based boardstates.
That said, it does kinda grind against itself a bit. If you run artifacts only, you have a pretty low chance of getting votes to draw off them. Same for enchantments. If you run neither, you could get the boardwipe, and then be left with a vanilla 2/2 for 5 mana. If you run both, you could get the boardwipe, hurting your own boardstate, and being left with a vanilla 2/2 for 5 mana. Even with blinking, you're almost putting yourself out more to do so, unless you're in a situation where one person is clearly in the lead, and the other players are willing to vote with you to either take down their boardstate or help you hopefully draw into answers. I guess what it boils down to is this commander is really swingy, and I'm not sure that's what most decks want in their one consistent option. {Winners} I'm gonna give this win to burntsquirrelman for the most solid all-around design. Runner up is Flo00 for a design that works well, even if it's maybe a bit much.

Jartis: My entry is most definitely Council's dilemma, as it offers meager, incremental rewards for the entire table if they all work together, but if there's even one dissenter, it's a massive setback for everyone. You're not missing much, if anything at all, by your written estimation. I might actually design more of these, and create a new pillar of the Hug archetype, one that encourages everybody to work together, while also revealing the one (hopefully only one or fewer) asshole at the table.
