After the runaway[citation needed] success[citation needed] of 27 Shades of Villainy, I knew it wasn't going to be the last we saw of the 27 Shades series. What I didn't realize was how damn long it'd take to follow up on the first installment.
I went through quite a few different ideas for 2 27 2 Shades before settling on one I liked. First there was 27 Shades of Heroism, but that proved to be too vague a brief - I'm not sure why, but it was much harder to design for heroes than for villains, perhaps because most of the villains of 27 Shades of Villainy were heroes in their own eyes. 27 Shades of Multiplicity, a set of 27 alt-timeline versions of MSE characters, had to be dropped because managing what would basically be a community project during exam season felt like a very bad idea. There was another idea, a tight flavor-based grouping with unusual color identities, which I won't spoil because I might still push forward on it someday. But, when I had the right plan, I knew it instantly.
Gods.
I have a bit of a thing about religion and spirituality in fantasy, and, now that Magic has at least two planes where gods are real and tangible, the idea of 27 divine beings was just too much to resist. I cast the net a little wider by defining a "divinity" as anything people worship. There are a fair few true Gods here, but you'll also find Avatars, Elder creatures, and even a couple of commanders which aren't creatures at all - at least, not full-time. Most but not all have a way to protect themselves, many can only fight if you jump through a hoop for them, but I felt that attaching myself to one particular design template for all 27 creatures would burn me out too quickly.
As before, there's one card for each monocolor, pair, and triad, plus one that's all colors and one that's colorless. These cards are all designed as commanders, but none of them specifically reference the Commander format or being your commander, so they could theoretically be played
One quick note: the set file uses custom numbering to keep cards in an order I like, so, if they're showing up in a weird order in MSE, make sure to enable the "Custom Card Number" column and sort by that.
I shall close with the same question I closed with the first time: which is your favorite (mechanics and/or flavor), which is your least favorite (ditto), and why?
