The Factions One thousand years ago, Volaria divided from one and became the ten factions due to a combination of rising tensions within the First Village as well as subtle prodding from the Elemental Spirits. They are now lead by the Elemental Masters. As is expected, there has never been true peace. The first war happened after a few months, 50 years later came the Resource War. Between then and now, there were wars fought, mostly over territory and ambition. Now they are fighting again, with the potential end result being the destruction of mainland Volaria. But who exactly are these factions? The TriumvirateOscura Since Oscure first created her faction, Oscura has been most well-known for its tactical prowess. Manipulating relationships, using certain battles to gain an upper hand in other ones. The faction has taken residence in the Starless Expanse, a shadow realm parallel to Volaria. Oscura is officially lead by Theynor, who managed to produce words convincing four other factions to join him. However, much more of Oscura is personally aware of Revela Ylerne, who serves as general and head tactician. Oscura's battle tactics in this particular war are heavily focused around grinding out the opponent's resources. Reusing used resources and ensuring every action matters are vital to their method of combat. To that end, making use of permanent enchantments to strengthen those that are still alive is a well-employed technique. Shaidosta Shaidosta as a faction was founded on the idea of using secrecy as a tool. In war, of course, knowledge that your opponent doesn't know cannot be used effectively against you. Shaido Nisita decided that using information and stealth was the best way to protect the citizens of Shaidosta, so they became known as the City of Assassins. Over time, this original intent was lost, and under the rule of Icilica, despite being Shaido's descendant, Shaidosta has become a faction controlled by force. Under Icilica's rule, Sylvares acts as an informant to Entela, hoping to fulfill a promise to a lost friend to bring the Master down. Shaidosta's battle relies on having options and keeping careful control over the combat. Assassins and rogues that are capable of slipping through doors, mages that gather information and strike down enemies.
Litara Litara is the center of mercantilism on Volaria, and has been since its inception. In its history, Litara has always been in wars to make a profit, and this war is no different. When Theynor offered a high price, many Litarans who had nothing better to sell ran into the fight. Presently, Litara is run by the skymage Inteila. The merchant Avery stays out of the war directly, although assists the Resistance with information where possible in hopes Volaria can return to true peace. Litara's battle strategy is not unlike Shaidosta's. Carefully take control, enforcing tithes and throwing up protective wards. As the sky city, aerial scouts can easily invade the enemy lines and make fighting significantly more difficult. Ria-Demai When war broke out and factions on either side became involved in the Resistance, Ria-Demai did what it has since the dawn of time and wanted to get involved. Under Linel's command, Ria-Demai engaged on Theria in hopes to gain extra weapons and materials. Presently, they are fighting both Mileran and Theria and losing no ground due to its antimagic weaponry. Myrei the daredevil travels across Volaria assisting with various battles going on. Ria-Demai is best at the all-out assault, sending waves into the enemy until they run out of the ability to defend. While this strategy is simple, it serves its purpose.
Mirora Mirora is well known as the place that stories go and stay. When Entela's Deep Storage system was set up, this purpose was no longer necessary, but Mirorans decided that they would keep their books and scrolls regardless. Mirora has never been afraid of being more expensive than strictly necessary. As the war goes on, Mirora becomes continually unsure of its allegiance. Drylen, the current Elemental Master, wants to pull out of the war, but Rylarel insists that the war continue. As a result, Mirora is locked in its own cold war during the Elemental War to the outside. The Mirora battle plan primarily involves the use of elementals, elemental energy given life instead of throwing lives that already existed at a problem in hopes of it going away. Over time, Miroran elementals have adapted to move fast and strike faster.
The ResistanceEntela Entela is one of the leaders of the resistance, well known for studying and understanding the foundations of magic. Just prior to the start of the war, Entela was housing the runaway Arina Nisita. When she was killed by an Oscuran assassin, Entela declared war against Oscura directly. Only a few weeks after, a massive spell from Oscura all but obliterated Entela, leaving less than a hundred survivors that took shelter in the underground maze of hallways and laboratories. Entela is presently lead by the sapient elemental Elega Aliri. While she spends much of her time fighting the main war, her daughter Sara manages the politics and other strategies. Entela fights mostly by the use of energy and magic. Casting spells and manipulating the opponent's forces the them make the relatively low amount of citizens left in Entela extremely dangerous. Theria Theria is the faction of explorers, to whom the trees are figuratively and literally their homes. In its history, Theria was the first faction to create a trial system, and is still one of the only factions that applies this form of justice. A vast majority of Therian citizens are elven. Theria's master is directly chosen by bloodline; their current master is Ayra Solir, direct descendant of First Master Theia. Theria took up arms against Oscura when it was suggested that Theynor wished to revive the Elemental Spirits, as the Spirits' destruction was the last wish of the Elemental Spirit Solari. While exploring in the traditional sense has no purpose on a perfectly known world, Therian elves are still potent as scouts, becoming stronger as they learn about the terrain they fight on.
Tirena Tirena is a desert village placed on top of a flowing river. It was quick to assist Entela's declaration of war when word of Arina's death reached it. Tirena is known as the "large family" faction. Soldiers train alongside each other for every day of their lives, such that on the battlefield they can diverge into groups and bring down any threat. Tirena is lead by Irana, a pyromancer with skill in oration and unmatched martial prowess. Tirena's combat relies on others. A single Tirenan alone is basically worthless, but together they could bring down an army of any size.
Mileran As the source of electricity and aethersteel on Volaria, Mileran has been historically important in setting up anything that relies on non-magical technology. Generators for most of Western Volaria, including Theria, Ria-Demai, and Litara, were originally created by Mileran. The skies around the center of power are controlled by dragons and elementals, daring any to attempt an attack. Mileran and Entela are not often in agreement, but the war forced them to take the same side. Mileran is controlled by the dragonkin Drayton, and during Kalia's time being part of Fulmen's war-ending plan, she quickly learned from the Mileran smiths. Mileran relies on elemental energy, aether, and mana in all forms. Mileran mages are capable of putting this massive quantity of energy to very powerful use. Elance Elance is the faction of life and death. As life progresses, it grows. When it dies, its life is spread across the land to feed future life. This circle of life and death is the core of Elance's philosophy. Elance was first created by the lich Elan, and is presently run by a different lich named Zelef. Elance joined the war due to the upset of Volaria's balance that would be caused by resurrecting the ancient Spirits. Presently, Elance is the only faction that still commonly speaks using the Ancient Volarian tongue, relying on translators both within and outside the faction to understand anyone else. Elance's battle relies on using both the alive and dead soldiers. In this way, Elance never runs out of resouces, even where others would have ages ago.

To my understanding of the Golgari, a good half of the Golgari's focus is on a place for the outcasts and it's a lot less focused on the balance between life and death as opposed to not wasting things the dead can be used for? I don't fully understand Golgari though, so it's possibly just the same thing.

STORY: SHATTERING DARKNESS The sky was clear. The air was clean. Entelans were going about their business around the fountain as usual. Fulmen was at the fountain again, as he always was after Arina left. He was considering a long and complex process to expand on Entela’s energy reserves. As it was, it took more energy to apply than was actually retrieved from it.
“What do you think, Sara?” Fulmen asked.
“It’s just Stem-Based Deconstruction, right?” Sara replied.
“I actually don’t know what that is,” Fulmen admitted. “I haven’t had to deal with that one.”
“Simply, it’s what we use to dissociate matter into elemental energy. Blast it with aether a bunch until the physical part is gone and then collect the energy.”
“That is kinda similar isn’t it?” Fulmen mused.
“Yeah, it doesn’t use the energy we’re hoping to gather as part of it though. We aren’t exactly in short supply of aether.”
“That’s fair,” Fulmen agreed. “What have you been working on?”
“Preparing for the war.”
“Obviously, so what have you been working on?” Fulmen asked with a chuckle. “I know you’re working on the war.”
“I was just working on sending a strike force…” Sara trailed off. Everything was wrong. She stood and spun around. Where moments ago had stone structures, there was only piles of rubble. The air was tainted heavily by darkness energy. Sara could only estimate that it was far more than enough to become fluid. People were wandering about normally for the moment. Sara overheard the time: 15.27. Moments later, everyone collapsed as their bodies were torn apart by the darkness.
As Sara turned to the south, she saw the source. On the horizon, a flash of light, followed by a shockwave of darkness that expanded faster than anything she had ever seen. The darkness traveled across the fields through Entela, destroying buildings as it passed, dissolving trees, grass, and any other life forms that happened to be in the way. Sara ran to follow it as it reached the underground aether barricade entrance. When closed it might have done its job, but wide open the darkness swept in, continuing its swath of destruction.
No one was left. Nothing was left. Entela was gone.
Sara sharply inhaled. Her breathing became impossible to control as hey eyes flicked around. Fulmen was at her side, staring at her. The buildings were still present. People were still going about their business. Everything was fine. Everything still existed. 15.27. The time when everyone would die. Sara fumbled around to find her transceiver. They had three hours.
“You alright?” Fulmen asked.
“We have to get everyone underground and close the barrier.” Sara answered vaguely.
“Pardon?” Fulmen tried to get more information from Sara, but to no avail.
Sara was standing on the fountain, shouting to get people's attention. She was the Master’s daughter, surely people would listen. When everyone in the area had calmed down, Sara repeated every detail she saw. Everything in the exact order she saw it, so they could gain the same context.
“We have to get into the laboratories. We’ll be safe beneath the aether barrier.,” she insisted. “It’s designed specifically for massive magical attacks.”
A few people in the crowd started to leave towards the entrance, but the rest either laughed it off or went back to their work. “Good imagination, kid.” “That could never happen.” They didn’t understand. Sara ran to the south to Entela’s edge to get more people, keeping a close watch on the time.
The answer was the same. Every time, a few people broke off, but no one else did. They only had a few hours, surely there was something Sara could say. Hopefully those that intended to take cover convinced the others to do so.
When only half of an hour remained, Sara returned to the aether barricade. The barrier was filled with a large cluster of people slowly flowing underground. Sara quickly estimated about two hundred, gathering through a barrier only a few people wide. A few of them Sara recognized that simply turned away. Sara chose one she remembered the name for.
“Esevi?” Sara asked a man. He was carrying some number of devices on one hand and holding a child’s hand with the other.
“Yes?” the man replied. “I’m already on the way.”
“I thought your work was too important to entertain the imagination of a kid like me,” Sara interrogated.
“Yeah, well. My family believed you, and if what you said is true, then I don’t want to be the one to kill them.” He paused. Sara remained silent so he would finish his thought. “I realized… even if it’s a one-in-a-trillion chance that we do get wiped off the map… That’s still a chance. This kind of thing doesn’t just happen randomly. Kids with imaginations aren’t imagining the end of the world.”
“Certainly not one who’s most of a Logic elemental,” Sara agreed with a nod. “Where is everyone else? Why are there so few of you when Entela…”
“Kid. There are a lot of people in this city more stubborn than I am. Everyone that’ll believe you without seeing it start is already here, so you’d better make sure you’re safe inside.”
“But…” Sara began. “If it’s already started, we don’t have time…”
“Understood, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”
“Massive surge of elemental energy on the horizon,” Sara heard through her transceiver. She was in Reality Augmentation. Lezyn specifically told her not to be. She was told that it would be a mistake to watch the events unfold. Sara did not listen. She had to be able to store the information later. No one else was going to keep a record of it, although many others were with her watching, so she had to. She was sitting on the ground, book in her lap and pen in her hand.
“How big?”
“Scanners are toast. Couldn’t tell you.”
"Excuse me?"
“Is that a Power Script?”
“It sure is trying to be.”
The chatter from the control room was difficult to follow given how many people were talking all at once. It definitely was not a Power Script. Sara had all of those committed to memory, and the closest one did not match, although she made the mistake of believing that earlier. It was possibly more terrifying knowing it wasn’t a power script.
Sara watched the pulse expand from the source as she had only a few hours earlier. As it swept through Entela, Sara realized why she was told not to watch. It was not the risk of wrong information; the enchantments she used were completely untouched by the energy. She had seen this happen. People wandering around with no care in the world, someone shouting 15.27, and then the pulse striking. There was nothing she could have done about it, even knowing hours in advance that it would happen. She followed the pulse again, watching as everything above ground was torn apart.
That was where things changed. The aether gate was closed. The energy connected to the gate and paused in an endless stalemate.
“Redirect energy into that barrier. We cannot let that through,” came a command from Lezyn through the transceiver. It was not directed at her, so she assumed someone would handle it.
“Redirecting energy. Releasing unnecessary doors, disabling lights.”
“Core Overflow enabled.” People were silent around Sara, everyone listening to Control and watching as the energy fought against the gate. If that gate falls, we all die, Sara thought. That was the only thought she could process. The core overflow was a tactic that had never been used previously. Destabilizing the core on purpose was unheard of.
Everyone sighed in relief as the pulse dissipated into the air. They had survived a spell powerful enough to fry the scanners. No one was excited. No one in Control was aware either, but for that moment, Sara knew they were alive. For certain.
“Sara Aliri to Control,” Sara declared loudly. “The aether gate successfully averted the destruction of Entela.”
Sara stood. People around her were murmuring about her. She had saved them. Because she warned them of disaster, they had lived through that. The core would detonate, and with nowhere upwards to go, the three floors at the bottom surrounding the core would be destroyed. The core engineers were certainly already evacuating once they initiated the Core Overflow. These were relatively small to Sara.
The master’s daughter, the one who had saved everyone, ran to the surface, to the outside. There was nothing left. She had to see it herself, even though she had witnessed it twice previously. People would say she saved hundreds of Entelans. Only what was expected from the Master’s daughter.
Sara could not see it that way. Sara failed to save the thousands that were still in the city when the spell hit.

Why do all of your renders have a bit of another card stitched to the left? I've seen a lot of different cards with this bug

It happens for a lot of people when copy-pasting images to Discord to act as a image host. It doesn't happen for everyone tho and I'm not sure why it does or doesn't happen.

Also, totally meaningless, but it isn't a bit of another card but a bit of the same card; the right hand side of the cards are cut a bit short. Maybe it's a frame thing? What frame does this set use?

This is the M15 frame, although it also happens with both the ultima frame on Starless Night and the enchantment frame on Diabolic Conjuror.

THE ELEMENTS Volaria is a place of elemental power. When they talk about spells or about technology, they don’t refer to mana, but rather to elemental energy, which stems from these elements. There are eleven elements, including the nature of Balance. Two of these are nonphysical and represent two halves of the spirit of life. For each of these elements, there is an Elemental Spirit, and these elements led into the Factions. What are the Elemental Spirits?
Calling the Spirits gods would not necessarily be incorrect, but it is definitely not the way that many of them would have answered. When Volaria was created, the Spirits came to life alongside it. As you would expect from Elementals, they were avatars of their element, but they were created in the form of races that they would eventually cause to populate the rest of Mainland Volaria. The names of the Spirits translate directly from Ancient Volarian to mean their element. For example, Solari’s name is Ancient Volarian for Light.
The Elemental Spirits caused the rise of the factions. Early on in the history of the mortals, the Spirit of Balance started to become problematic. Fearing that he may attempt to wipe the mortals out in the future, the other ten Spirits created a failsafe. They instilled a bit of their massive elemental power, now known as the Power Scripts, into each of ten beings that became the factions’ First Masters. It was up to these Masters and their bloodlines to keep the Power Scripts for when the Spirits would one day have to die.
In Volaria [VOL], the Elemental Spirits were destroyed ages ago. However, their influence is still felt in the Masters and in Theynor’s goal. The ten spirits belonging to the factions are in Volaria past the normal card count numbers. They do not appear in boosters as normal, but are legal in any format where Volaria would normally be legal, taking the place of intro pack promos. (Yes, Volaria has intro packs, don’t worry about it.) Air (Litara) Power Script: Sovereign Stasis Sovereign Stasis is functionally a localized time stop. The target is frozen but cognizant, and effects of either spells or attacks take no effect until the spell is released. Talis was the Elemental Spirit of Litara. He was obsessed with making a profit, bringing the concept of currency to the Spirits and then to the Factions. Stories tell of Talis appearing on lost pathways to sell information to those who are lost, or providing relics to all factions in times of war regardless of who’s side they were on. In the war before the Fall of the Spirits, Talis was an acting informant to the war effort.
Ice (Shaidosta) Power Script: Sever Reality Sever Reality is an assassin's best tool. Using a bladed weapon as a channel, Sever strikes through the soul of an enemy, usually killing it. Severa was the Elemental Spirit of Shaidosta. She embodies what current Shaidosta does: using subterfuge and deceit to reach all goals. Prior to the Fall of the Spirits, Severa was acting as a companion to Rya Nisita of Shaidosta, who she hoped would take the role of killing Balance using Sever Reality.
Emotion (Ria-Demai)
Power Script: Dimensional Strike Dimensional Strike is a lost spell that used to enable the caster to fade through the Starless Expanse and Volaria for a period of time. Istali was the Elemental Spirit of Ria-Demai. She was the first Volarian to consider doing anything to risk their life. She was also the first Spirit to realize that they were not incapable of dying as they had thought before. Istali spent every living moment driving people to follow their desires, regardless of the dangers. She taught one lesson above all. A heart unclouded by fear is one that is truly alive. Ria-Demai has kept her teachings alive throughout the years as the faction that is the most entranced by danger.
Energy (Mileran) Power Script: Crafter’s Perfection Crafter's Perfection grants the caster near-perfect knowledge of a task they are about to undertake. Ires was the Elemental Spirit of Ria-Demai and the original reason for the existence of dragons and dragonkin on Volaria. When Istali discovered aethersteel for the first time, Ires immediately began looking into it, figuring out how to produce energy without spellcasters and how to use it without spells. When Mileran came together on top of the greatest source of aethersteel on Volaria, Ires taught the use of it to make household lives far, far easier.
Light (Theria) Power Script: Solar Blade Solar Blade gathers light and fires it in a beam, temporarily paralyzing or killing whoever or whatever is in its way. Solari was the Elemental Spirit of Theria and the progenitor of most Volarian elves. Solari was always the most friendly of the Spirits, being the first to talk to the mortals and the first to suggest sacrificing her life to protect them. Solari pretended to be a normal elf to find a friend outside of the Spirits and befriended who would become First Master Theia. It was by Solari’s suggestion that the First Masters came to be, and by her death, the official first declaration of war against the Elemental Spirits was made by Theria. Solari is the only Spirit still fully remembered by a faction on Volaria. Darkness (Oscura) Power Script: Starless Night Starless Night is a disastrous effect that takes an area on Volaria and bridges it to the Starless Expanse, killing all life in the area. Morin was the Elemental Spirit of Oscura. He is the only Spirit that kept a primarily elemental form. Morin was spiteful of the mortals at first. The world had been designed for the Spirits, so what was going on with the life that thought themselves as powerful as the Spirits? Morin had to be convinced to hand over a part of his power, but when the time came to turn against Balance, Morin stood against the mortals, hoping that Balance would succeed in wiping them out.
Logic (Entela) Power Script: Erasure Process Erasure Process enables the editing, removal, and reconstruction of memories in a target. Lyr was the Elemental Spirit of Entela. He avoided interaction with the mortals as much as possible, except for key moments to give necessary information to them. With only a few lessons, they would grow by themselves to far beyond anything he could teach them. Lyr’s skill came more in protecting the mind from others than simply editing it, and in preparation for the final fight, he used his power to protect Severa from Balance’s control so she could continue to guide the Shaidostan resistance. Earth (Elance) Power Script: Moment’s Reverse Moment's Reverse is capable of unwinding resource use and death to replenish life as it was before death. Soris was the Elemental Spirit of Elance and the cause of Volaria’s resource-sustaining Elemental Equilibrium. When the Factions first rose, they ran out of resources fairly quickly. Mainland Volaria isn’t large; only ten days to walk across. They began fighting over even food and wood. In his last moments, Soris released a failsafe in Elemental Equilibrium that regenerated resources for a faction when they began to run low. In essence, he took a concept that already existed for elemental energy and applied it to resources. Fire (Tirena) Power Script: Endless Blaze Endless Blaze is a carefully controlled worldfire that either creates a boundary or annihilates an area. Pyres was the Elemental Spirit of Tirena. When she chose who would be the First Master of Tirena, Pyres was not concerned about who would make the best leader, but at who people would be most likely to listen to. To Pyres, a leader could be created if people were willing to give them time. First Master Tira, an outgoing young girl that always had opinions, fit perfectly. Pyres stepped away to watch Tirena grow into the organized militia that helped end the Spirits.
Water (Mirora) Power Script: Aether Control Aether Control disables magic in a pulse, shutting off power scripts as well as most enchantments. Mystis was the Elemental Spirit of Mirora. When the other Spirits started arguing, Mystis took it on himself to be the one to calm them down. It not take long for Mystis to realize that he had a place to fill in society as a mediator. When the Factions rose, Mystis chose a Master that would similarly fill in as a mediator for the Masters, and gave him the power to halt all magic in an area, including normally unstoppable Power Scripts, to fulfill this role.

STORY SPOTLIGHTS Story Spotlight 1: Shattering Darkness With the death of Arina Nisita, Sara instantly declares war against Oscura. For the first few weeks of the war, this is fine for both sides. They prepare armies, gather allies, and start planning for the upcoming war. Oscura prepares to unload a massive payload spell. Two weeks after the official declaration of war, Sara’s Logical Precognition triggers, telling her to get everyone possible underground and protected by an aether gate. She manages to get approximately 200 out of around 4000 Entelans to agree to take shelter. A pulse of insanely concentrated darkness propagates through Entela, razing everything on its surface and forcing the Entelans to detonate the core to generate enough power to keep its aether gate standing. While the laboratories of Entela are not destroyed and people live, a very visual mark of Oscura’s power is left on the fallen city. Story Spotlight 2: Final Resistance
Now six months into the war, Fulmen’s plan has become to take action. Using a mixture of Entelan teleportation technology and his understanding of how to planeswalk, Fulmen creates a method of bridging Terrana and Volaria to ask for help from two of his friends. Marina Selenia, a possible Planeswalker, and Kalia Leone, who came despite all warnings.
While Marina and Kalia learn how magic works and how to use it, Fulmen notices via Reality Augmentation that Oscura is leading an attack against Tirena using a cloaking enchantment. He rushes out to warn Master Irana about the attack: if Tirena were to fall, the Resistance would crumble with it. With this information, Tirena turns a definite loss into a vital victory for the Resistance, taking firm control of the war. Between the Spotlights: Fulmen’s guerrilla party head to Shaidosta to gain assistance from Sylvares, then cross Volaria to assist Theria and prepare for a strike against Oscura. Story Spotlight 3: Untold Knowledge
As time in the war progresses, Sara’s ability to concentrate wavers. Every time she hears more about Revela, the more she thinks there’s some form of connection. Sara enters Reality Augmentation and uses it to gain access to Entela’s Deep Storage, finding documents concealed by Lezyn over the course of 8 years.
Of importance to Sara, she learns that she is the first and only living member of the Entali Project for elemental hybridization, and that her memory (and all of Entela’s) was edited using Erasure Process so that Lezyn could oversee the project. Sara is Lezyn’s daughter. Sara is Revela’s lost sister.
Sara confronts Lezyn, who hides nothing after being shown that Sara knows of the Entali Project. She demands he restore her memory, to which he replies that she should “do it herself”, as being his daughter, she is capable of casting Erasure Process herself. Story Spotlight 4: Memories Restored
The final attack against the Oscuran citadel begins. While Fulmen, Sylvares, Kalia, and Marina try to storm the castle to locate Theynor, Sara goes off in search of Revela. Revela is found protecting the door to Theynor’s ritual chamber (the pinnacle of the Citadel), and she and Fulmen engage. Sara arrives to disarm Revela, and suggests that that she is the sister Revela has been trying to avenge. She offers to restore Revela’s memory. Revela reluctantly accepts at the hope that Sara is telling the truth. Sara’s Erasure Process to restore Revela’s memory goes off perfectly. As pieces fall into place, Revela is overwhelmed by regret for what she did as an Oscuran tactician and vows to repay for her crimes against Entela. She tells the strike force, now consisting of Fulmen, Sara, Kalia, Marina, and Sylvares, that she will assist them against Theynor, but they need to keep him busy. Story Spotlight 5: Invoke the First Master
The strike force engages on Theynor, who has gained the power he sought for. Using small fractions of his powers, he toys with the strike force. Fulmen uses a plasma detonator to overcharge Theynor’s crystal array. The charge hits Kalia in the process, killing her instantly. With Theynor in position, Revela strikes from the shadows with a single declaration, the declaration of Master Rya of Shaidosta when the Spirits were killed: “The eleven have fallen. Here, as the Elemental Masters, we fulfill the task for which we were chosen. Today, we strike down the Elemental Spirits.” She channels and casts Sever Reality, destroying Theynor and the Spirit he was evoking. Between the Spotlights: Sara officially becomes the Elemental Master of Entela while involved at the Citadel, and using her new power, takes legal protection of Revela when Theria’s Master attempts to bring her into trial. Revela and Avery explain the importance of the Elemental Seal to the less-studied Volarians, as the place where the factions were born and where the Spirits were killed. The Masters decide to hold meetings at the beginning of every month.Story Spotlight 6: The Elemental Seal
Sara and Fulmen gather information to suggest that Lezyn’s use of Erasure, and not Revela herself, is responsible for causing the war and the deaths that resulted from it. Revela is spared with the stipulation that she assist in the repairs of the war. She tells Fulmen that Arina did not die and instead planeswalked away from Volaria. The factions diverge with Lezyn taken into Entelan custody and the war finally over. The Elemental Masters at the War's End: Litara - Inteila Oscura - Revela Shaidosta - Sylvares Entela - Sara Ria-Demai - Linel Elance - Sylenia Mileran - Drayton Tirena - Irana Theria - Ayra Mirora - Drylen/Rylarel

VOLARIAN SCRIPTURES
Volaria's a plane where powerful magic has shaped the world. The Power Scripts, Elemental Equilibrium, Deep Storage... The world's history is covered in powerful spells. To reflect this, Volaria has a set of masterpieces that you could open in limited and might be powerful or something like that. As per usual with masterpieces, these don't change any legality. Most of the cards are from sets already in MSE Modern or from Volaria, although there is one that had to be carried in from WotC sets. With two exceptions, every spell is an instant or sorcery. The Elemental Spirits and an enchantment Power Script sneak in for their importance to Volaria.

Important People to Volaria's Story Revela Ylerne Revela is the Oscuran assassin in charge of the war effort. She is the head tactician and personally leads most attacks against the Resistance, the notable exception being the attack against Tirena that resulted in failure. As the war goes on, Revela pieces words together in a journal to get some sense of what happened to her sister. Marina and Kalia convince her that she may not be too far along the path of darkness to save the Resistance. Revela’s memory is reclaimed during the fight over Oscura and she turns against Theynor. Fulmen Delcarlo Fulmen is the electromancer hoping to do things bigger than anyone on Volaria should be capable of. With Arina’s death, Fulmen immediately begins planning to make an attack against Oscura, only remaining calm because Sara points out that he cannot fight all of Oscura by himself. Instead, he produces an idea to bring another possible planeswalker to Volaria to assist in the effort. While his plan does technically work, it results in the death of a close friend.
Marina Selenia Marina is a Terran human that Fulmen conscripted to help end Volaria’s war. Fulmen notices an innate magic about her that he felt in himself when he became a planeswalker, so he creates a plan to bring her to Volaria. Marina becomes taught about her planeswalker’s spark, what it means to Fulmen, ascending during the final fight against Theynor when Kalia is killed. Non-Planeswalkers Sara Aliri Sara is the child of the elemental Elemental Master of Entela. Her body is primarily elemental Logic, and she has an ability Entelans call Logical Precognition that functions as a form of limited future sight. Sara takes charge of Entela’s political situations while the Master deals with the military command. Her curiosity and demands for answers lead her to locate data files describing her as a human-elemental hybrid and calling her Sara Ylerne. When Master Elega is killed in battle, the remaining Entelans decide that Sara is the best option to take over, and she becomes the new Elemental Master. With this new power, she brings forward the Entali Project for elemental hybridization, allowing it to be studied in better detail now that she is aware of her role in it. Kalia Leone Kalia is an impulsive Terran human and Marina’s best friend. When Fulmen asks Marina for help, Kalia insists that she will not allow Fulmen to take Marina without bringing her along, since Kalia is trained in fencing and practices her own metalcraft. During her time on Volaria, Kalia is taught about smithing with aethersteel, but is killed by Fulmen’s recklessness.
Sylvares Valerna Sylvares is a Shaidostan scout helping the Resistance. When Arina departed from Shaidosta, she and Sylvares made a promise that one day, Shaidosta’s master would fall and a new Master would take her place. As time goes on, Sylvares becomes Icilica’s second-command, becoming the person that legally takes over Shaidosta in the event Icilica is defeated. Sylvares duels and defeats Icilica during the attack against Oscura.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll be happy to answer!

Interesting update, I do have a question for you: how did Kalia make it to Volaria if she's not a planeswalker? who managed to actually planeswalk a non-walker?

That's actually a question I've gotten a few times.
Fulmen used technology that Entela's been studying called aether tunnels. The idea is that because the dangerous part of planar travel is the chaotic energy of the aether, an aether tunnel is meant to force away the aether to create a safe pathway. While the aether tunnel gets lost during the travel by itself, Fulmen figured out that he could use his spark to tether the aether tunnel, albeit destroying the prototype once leaving the blind eternities.

MECHANICS AND THEMES Volaria is not heavy with mechanics, although I figure that they deserve their article anyways. The set has two mechanics, each of which appears on about ten cards, and then has two mechanical subthemes that appear on 5-7 cards each.
Flashback
Flashback returns! Most of this war for Volaria has to do with information and resource management, and especially has to do with past knowledge. With Sara looking through Deep Storage, Elance focusing on grinding down Shaidostan resources, and Theynor trying to restore the Elemental Spirits, the past is returning and doing so strongly. In Volaria, Flashback is in all 5 colors but is primarily in blue and red.Flashback (You may cast this spell from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)Possess On the other side of the war is Oscura and the possess mechanic. This mechanic turns your creatures into Auras when they die, allowing them to stick around and offer help to another with whatever it was doing before. Alternatively, you can hand it to an opponent's creature on the off chance that matters. Note that this cannot attach to something with shroud, protection from its colors, or an opponent's creature with hexproof because it does target. Possess is entirely white and black.Possess (When this creature dies, return it to the battlefield as an Aura enchantment attached to target creature.)
Multicolor Volaria has a strong multicolor theme as a result of the factions. The set is designed for limited with ten color pairs in mind, so both two- and three-color archetypes exist to make that work. Fixing will be covered in a later spoiler, but fear not, it does exist. Of course, a multicolor theme means cards that care:
Untapping Creatures In green-white, there's a small theme of untapping creatures. This appears on a few cards and check to see when creatures untap, or if you untapped a creature that turn.

Mana Fixing(And How Volaria's Draft Works) This is going to be another short article, but fear not, I have something that I am especially excited about set up for tomorrow after I was asked about it. I feel like it deserves to be mentioned how you are going to manage to get to two or even three colors in limited and constructed for Volaria. The factions doing their things is an important part of Volaria, after all, so not being able to function on multiple colors because your deck can't find Plains for your life would be a bit of a downer.
ANY COLOR There are two common any-color fixers that you should be seeing going around. These provide the mana base foundation for many, many limited formats, and doing something special here in hopes that it worked out seemed counter-intuitive. Long story short, not special, but perfectly functional.
RARE CYCLE In each of the faction's home centers, this cycle makes its home. If, by any means, something in either of your colors has ended up in your graveyard (I don't know, perhaps because you cast a spell or had a creature die), these lands will enter untapped to provide you fixing. Now that you have had to discard two white cards to maximum hand size, your topdecked Starless Expanse will be perfectly functional as a Scrubland.THE BASIC LAND SLOT This is where Volaria draft becomes different. If you remember back to either Dragon's Maze or Fate Reforged, this concept is not new, but is very important to making these drafts work. Instead of a basic land, boosters of Volaria will have one of ten Refuge duals. This allows a higher density of color fixing than normal so that people actually end up with the color fixing they need.

Why aren't you just reprinting the KTK gainlands? Why functional reprints? (Yes, I know that these were the names of the bouncelands in the original Volaria block.)

These actually were not the names of the Original Volaria lands. This is a twofold thing. First, the names were decided before the abilities because the lands were one way I was going to show part of Volaria's world that doesn't show up much on cards. So, off the west coast where Ria-Demai's volcanic activity meets the coastline, you end up with the Fire Sea. The other problem was that the KTK lands just didn't... fit Volaria. Thornwood Falls and Blossoming Sands, for example, are not things that exist. So, here we have functional reprints.

The Nature of Volaria This is a strange topic to write my last article about, isn’t it? After all, I already talked about the Elements, the essence of Volaria. What more could I possibly have to talk about? When I asked for ideas about what to fill a missing article about, this topic was brought up, and instantly I began considering what I could write about. Even aside from the elements, Volaria as a plane has aspects that might not be clear when unexplained, but have very important consequences in the world. Aspects of the world that most Volarians have at least a vague concept of but might not always come up in conversation.
Elemental Equilibrium One of the keys to Volarian magic, and to the sustenance of its civilization, is Elemental Equilibrium. The fundamentals are very simple: In a system, if all ten core elements are present with Balance, the elements will eventually equalize. On a small scale, this applies both positively and negatively in Entelan technology. As an upside, perfect balance makes measuring energy and concentration exceptionally simple. On the other hand, isolating Balance from a system where not all ten elements are supposed to be in equilibrium is a pain in the neck.
More importantly, Elemental Equilibrium is a large-scale factor for the factions. If you picture each element on a large scale, it can be fairly clear. If one faction is mostly wiped out but still remains, Elemental Equilibrium will equalize it again over time, essentially keeping the faction system together and using it to stabilize the plane’s forces as a whole. If, for example, Litara runs out of quartz to do construction, or if Mileran runs low on aethersteel for forging, these materials restore themselves. In essence, Elemental Equilibrium prevents resources from being completely used up. The Aether Storm Mainland Volaria is a small island. It takes only 10 days to walk across, and the Starless Expanse is not much larger. A further day of sea travel outwards, and Volarians hit a functional brick wall of concentrated aether. All varieties of teleporting through it fails. No place in the Starless Expanse will line up with a location off of the island. And, of course, sailing into it destroys the craft and the crew equally. It’s possible that there is more to the world beyond this Aether Storm, but no one can tell.
This Aether Storm produces one of the most important scientific problems on Volaria: How to get past this wall. Specifically, two of Volaria’s technological prototypes, one from Entela and one from Theria, are centered entirely on breaking through this wall. Entela is working on a system called Aether Tunneling, intending to be able to, well, tunnel through the wall with magic and open the ability to teleport through. With help from Litara and Oscura, Theria designs enchantments and wards to allow a ship to sail safely through the aether storm for just long enough to hit land on the other side.
The Starless Expanse Having been mentioned everywhere, it’s possible that the Starless Expanse is something that may not have been fully understood. The Starless Expanse, in its simplest explanation, is the shadow to Volaria. To people that care to practice, fading between the Starless Expanse and Volaria is a simple act of casting a spell or opening a door. Oscura took full control of the Starless Expanse early on, when no one quite understood its tactical benefits.
The Starless Expanse is a place with no sky, with no life, and with few materials. The only light is generated by fragile crystals, and travelling through the Starless Expanse by itself is tedious. In endless night, many Oscurans live, toiling away, readying buildings and gateways as the effects of being away from light and life press down on them. Living permanently in this shadow is not a life that one should choose.
Reality Augmentation One of the two most important creations to Entela is Reality Augmentation. In Entela’s laboratories exists two Reality Augmentation chambers that use aether circuitry to produce an augmentation field. Inside this room, reality is functionally subjective, and skilled casters or aether technicians can program the room to reproduce anything they wish. Battlefields, people, weapons, Deep Storage. Sara originally used Reality Augmentation as a toy. Over time, she developed many programs that she could call on any time in the future. Reality Augmentation provides an outlet for scanning drones to send images to Entela. It allows full recreations of cities or worlds, even capable of expanding the interior space. It allows games and drills to be run without fear of accidentally injuring others. To an Entelan, describing what Reality Augmentation undercuts the things that Reality Augmentation can do.
Deep Storage Deep Storage is single-handedly the most important information source on Volaria. Originally, Deep Storage was a project designed by Entela’s First Master, intended to be where all information Entela had access to would be stored. It was designed to be impervious to simple antimagic attacks, but quickly, it became far more, and became impervious to damaging magic in all senses. Deep Storage, simply, is a storage drive. Information is put in, organized, and can be read. However, its indestructibility offers one key piece of information: The data within Deep Storage cannot be edited. Individual data cells can be moved around, or edits can be written in as new copies of documents, but they cannot be changed outright. Importantly, this means that data can never be destroyed, only hidden behind security barriers. This has allowed Deep Storage to remain Entela’s information storage since the Fall of the Spirits.
Fluid Energy and Aethersteel Let’s talk about energy. Specifically, elemental energy and its applications in spellcasting and technology. Aether is fairly understood as the chaotic energy in space and between worlds. Elemental energy is created by mages by gathering aether and “editing” it by the use of mana into a form of simple magical energy, called “elemental” energy due to its connection to the elements. The concept of spellcasting, to those inclined to study it in depth, is simply altering the properties of an amount of aether and concentrating elements in perfect proportions to create spells. Volarians do not recognize mana as a separate entity from elemental energy, but they are separate for one large difference: Elemental energy is created from aether, whereas mana is drawn to use aether. When elemental energy becomes concentrated enough, it becomes fluid. It becomes visible with a bright glow with a color depending on the element, can be dragged around, formed into solids, et cetera. This is aptly named fluid energy. In this form, elemental energy is extremely volatile and harmful. If a person is trapped in a room where the energy becomes fluid, the person is likely to be killed in moments. Expectedly, this means that more potent and dangerous spells exist in fluid energy.
So, then, if this is fluid energy, what is aethersteel? Aethersteel is essentially solid elemental energy. Because magic itself cannot exist in a solid state for any period of time, it needs to be bound to a material, and naturally on Volaria, this material is often metallic iron. This solid state of magic bound to steel is what is called “aethersteel”, and is usually elementally aligned.
Power Scripts and Master Bloodlines Whenever a person capable of casting a Power Script is noticed, many people completely flip out. The Power Scripts are the single most concentrated spell of their element in the world. For most people, the energy required to bring magic to a perfect concentration feeds back into the body and kills the caster before they can finish channeling it. Specifically, this feedback applies to everyone that did not descend from a specific First Master. Why are the First Masters important? When the factions were destined to rise, the Elemental Spirits offered a portion of their power to the people that would eventually become the First Masters. These spells were called the Power Scripts, and although the specifics weren’t known at the time, the Spirits’ true gift was a connection between the caster’s soul and Volaria itself in hopes that they could destroy the Spirits later on. Channeling a Power Script through the plane was still exhausting, but meant that the feedback had somewhere to go. This connection to the plane is passed down by descendance.
So, why are the Power Scripts so important now? For most, the idea of tracking descendance by the Power Script has been lost, but it still has importance. Specifically, if two people can both cast the same Power Script, they are related by blood to some degree of separation. For those who study the bloodlines, this becomes even more elaborate due to one clear fact: First Master Shaido and First Master Ental had children. That is, anyone descended from either Shaido or Ental, and thus casters of Sever Reality or Erasure Process respectively, must also be related.

INTRO DECKS You might recall that I said Volaria had intro decks. I just now realized that I completely forgot to give decklists for them as part of my final release. Therefore, let's do this! In each decklist is the number of each card, the card's name, the card's color, and the first letter of its type.
Litara Shaidosta Ria-Demai Mileran Theria Oscura Entela Elance Tirena Mirora

I'm blown away by the effort and energy put into this set. It feels at a glance like it would draft well, all of the colors and combinations feel compelling, and your attention to detail in application of the color pie also shines through. I'd be curious to print a cube and try it out. Have you had a chance to do much playtesting?

I've done a few test drafts and sealed pools. I've not yet played any games of the limited, unfortunately, but used feedback from those tests. If you try it yourself, please feel free to send feedback my way!
