[05/09/2022: Darkin Update
— Added Equipment to the spell speed list and to the keyword list. Spell cards will have Power and Health fields when Equipment is selected as the spell speed, by keyword or by the override setting
— Reworked spell subtypes: Spell cards of any rarity now have access to subtypes by default. You can click the area above the rarity gem and begin typing to make the subtype box appear, the same way as you can with units. This update may remove types from existing tokens, which will need to be re-entered. The Token rarity option has been disabled and can no longer be selected, but still exists for legacy Token cards - these should be converted to the "none" rarity or equivalent.
— Trap, Boon and Origin have also been added to the spell frame override list.
— Updated the font spell subtype font.
— Added Equip, Auto-Equip, Flow, Forge, Improvise, lower-case "strike", and a number of variants to the autoreplace list.
— Updated and improved the typeline script to better identify spell usage.]
[20/07/2022: Cope Update
— Added Hallowed to both the keyword list and the in-line keyword list under symbol code '-'.
— Added Evolve to both the keyword list and the in-line keyword list under symbol code '*'.
— Updated the Void and Ixtal icons.
— Added some uncommon alterations of existing keywords to the autoreplace list.]
[24/05/2022: Worldwalker Update
— Updated the Runeterra icon and promoted it from the non-canon region section to the canon section.
— Added Boon and Origin to the spell keyword list. For Boon, the layout is identical to that of Traps. For Origin, the keyword box becomes hidden. You can still click it while it's invisible if need to change it back, or you can just press CTRL-Z.
— Spells with multiple keywords will now skip non-spell keywords when determining the Spell frame. For instance, a Fleeting-Focus spell will now correctly set itself to Focus rather than defaulting to Slow. (Remember that you can force-set the frame of the Spell card with the "Set spell speed frame" option in the Style tab.)
— Added Spawn and Origin to the autoreplace list.
— Updated the icon on the frame of all Spell cards. Skills now display the new Skill icon rather than the Fast icon.
— Rarity gems will no longer appear on Skills, Traps, Boons and Origins, even when a collectible rarity is selected. (This is to address a bug that frequently caused token cards to "stick" on the default rarity when being set instead of correctly switching to no rarity)
— Merged Impact with the other Set 5 keywords in the keyword list.
— Increased the flavour text line limit on the Splash templates from 8 to 10. (thanks, fizzNchips)
— Fixed a bug on the Splash templates causing the flavour text box to fail to match the size of the text when the number of lines changed.
— Fixed various inaccurate tooltips regarding default font sizes.]
[14/02/2022: Misadventurous Update
— Added Fated to both the keyword list and the in-line keyword list under symbol code '^'.
— Added Fated to the autoplace list.
— Added tri-region support for splash templates, selectable in the Style tab.]
[24/08/2021: Bandlewood Update
— Updated the Bandle City icon and promoted it from the now permanently non-canon section to the canon section.
— Added a few new non-canon regions so that Ixtal and Void won't be too lonely down there.
— Added Impact to both the keyword list and the in-line keyword list under symbol code 'Z'. That's the whole alphabet now used as a symbol code, and I'm not sure what to do in the future
— Added Impact, Manifest and strongest and weakest (lower case) to the autoreplace list. Also fixed Recalled automatically turning into Recall (whoops)
— Added Trap as a new spell speed. Previously you could make these by setting the speed to "Blank" and writing "Trap" in, but now you can do this much more easily and they will automatically resemble the new Trap template.
— Added an option to use an image as the card background rather than block colour. This can be toggled with the new "Use image background" setting in the Style tab.
— Updated the splash templates to match equivalent in-game changes, with smaller text size and boxes moved closer to the edge of the frame.
— Slightly lowered the width of keyword boxes.
— Slightly lowered the height of text across the board on Champion cards.
— Updated the Skill icon.]
[29/06/2021: Underworlds Update
— Added Lurk to both the keyword list and the in-line keyword list under symbol code 'J'.
— Added Lurker, Blade Dance, Prediction and Predicted to the autoreplace list.
— Updated the in-line Augment keyword icon (thanks Glorious Evolution!)
— Updated the region icons (again)]
[03/03/2021: Shurima Update
— Did a lot of internal restructuring, removed redundant graphics and moved most of them from the template packages into the game package. This probably won't affect you unless you're making custom frames, although it has decreased the overall filesize
— Updated the Shurima icon and ascended it from the prospective section of the region menu to the canon section.
— Regions are now placed in the top-right of the card in their own box, instead of near the bottom of the card. This behaviour can be toggled with the new "Use new region placement" option in the Set tab
— The number of regions displayed on a card can now be changed with the new "Number of Regions" option in the Style tab, from 0 to 3, with 1 as the default.
— Added Level 3 to champion frames, available as an additional choice for the "Set Level" option in the Style tab. Currently this frame can't display rarity gems, although they can still be assigned.
— Added Focus as a new spell speed frame, as a keyword in the Spell section, and as an in-line keyword under symbol code ','.
— Added Focus, Countdown, Predict, Reputation, advance, slay, and a few other new highlighted terms to the autoreplace list.
— Updated skills to correctly use the Fast icon rather than the Slow icon.
— Updated followers to use the follower type tag graphic rather than the champion type tag (whoops)]
[17/12/2020: Cosmic Creations Update
— Added Augment to both the keyword list and in-line keyword list under symbol code 'M'.
— Added Invoke to the in-line keyword list under symbol code 'X'.
— Added Augment, Invoke and Reforge to the autoreplace list.]
[14/10/2020: Landmark Update
— Added two new templates for designing Landmark cards, one "regular" (340x512) and one "large" (680x1024)
— Added Landmark to the keyword list. This symbol is standalone rather than being a "Standard" or "Spell" keyword, appears by default on the Landmark templates and does not appear in-line
— Updated the template icons that appear on the ribbon template selector.
— Removed the blue border at the bottom of unit templates.]
[20/09/2020: Splash Update
— Added two new templates for creating full art splashes. See the tutorial here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1IkXJkFc58
— Changed the "Set darkness fade" setting into "Set shadow", which is now located towards the top of the Style tab, uses a choice setting rather than a percentage, and is set to "Moderate" by default.
— Card names, keyword boxes, and subtypes with now capitalise automatically.
— Added to prompt to spell templates to set the color if it hasn't already been set.
— Added options to the "Defaults and Automation" section of the Set Info tab to disable any of the above three features.
— Updated and improved all the region icons (again)
— Added a slight black outline to all ability and level ability text.
— Shrunk keyword textboxes across all frames.
— Fixed a masking issue causing corners to colour incorrectly on Fast and Burst spell frames.
— Fixed a masking issue causing white pixels to appear on follower frames.
— Added error handling to hopefully reduce the number of harmless errors caused by non-numeric characters in Style fields.
— Updated the Fleeting, Ephemeral and Regeneration in-line keyword symbols.
— Reduced the transparency of the blue border portions on all card templates.
— Made slight visual improvements to champion and spell templates.
— Removed some relics from MTG's autoreplace options.]
[26/08/2020: Call of the Mountain Update
— Updated the Targon icon and promoted it from the prospective section of the region menu to the canon section.
— Increased the number of available custom keywords per set file from 5 to 10.
— Added frames for both Burst AND Fast token spells, meaning that the Token rarity is now fully supported for spells. Also now has its own section in the transparency folders.
— Token tag on spell frames is now initially blank rather than defaulting to "TREASURE".
— Added SpellShield to both the keyword list and in-line keyword list under symbol code 'H'.
— Added Fury to both the keyword list and in-line keyword list under symbol code 'Y'. (Can you tell we're running out of letters for keywords?)
— Added SpellShield, Fury, Behold, Invoke, Nightfall, Daybreak and Nab to the autoreplace list.
— Added '@' to the autoreplace list so that it automatically becomes the Skill icon, meaning you can make easily make any keyword trigger a skill, e.g. '@nightfall'.
— Removed various terms from the autoreplace list that became redundant with the previous addition.
— Removed the spaces from the spell keywords (Burst, Fast and Slow) in the autoreplace list.
— Updated and improved various tooltips.]
[06/06/2020: Made numerous tweaks to the code to support MSE 2.1.0.
— Tidied up the contents of the pack.
— Slightly adjusted the alignment of various text fields.
— Keyword boxes now automatically resize to fit their contents as opposed to using a reference table; this also applies to custom keywords. It can still be overriden with the "Set keyword chop" styling.
— Updated and improved every keyword graphic, most notably spell keyword graphics.
— Added Capture to the in-line keyword list under symbol code 'K' and added "Capture", "Captures" and "Captured" to autoreplace.
— The Level Up abiltiy text field now has a separate font size styling to the regular ability text field.
— Fixed "Regenerate" autoreplacing instead of "Regeneration".
— Fixed a bug that caused conjoined keyword boxes to misalign if a card's single keyword was first set to "Blank".
— Fixed the "Token" rarity option on the large spell frame being invisible.
— Fixed Vulnerable being inaccessible on the large spell frame.
— Fixed the text field's symbol font size not matching the regular font size on the tooltip frame.
— Fixed incorrect styling options descriptions on the tooltip frame.
— Fixed tooltips displaying as Common and being from Runeterra in the cardlist.
— Removed irrelevant styling options from the tooltip frame.
— Updated the example sets to Rising Tides wording standards. I haven't done anything about the balance, though.]
[08/05/20: Added lor-tooltip.mse-style, a new template package that adds a seventh frame to LoR in MSE. This relatively simple template can used to emulate tooltips like those that hover above keywords in-game. Its only editable fields are: 'name'; 'ability'; 'tail', a choice field that determines whether or not a "tail" should be shown at the bottom of the tooltip; and 'keysymbol', a choice field similar to the ones found in keyword boxes in other templates. This shares the custom keyword list of those templates, so adding a custom keyword to a set file will also allow it to be chosen here.
— Added beaufortforlol-regular.otf, a font file required by lor-tooltip.mse-style. Please install it.
— Added a 'Spell Shield' tooltip to all example set files.
— Updated lor.mse-game to not crash when it sees an unfamiliar frame, such as lor-tooltop.mse-style.
— Updated card-sample.png in all template packages.
— Fixed more typos.]
[29/04/20: Improved the quality of Attune, Deep, Scout and Vulnerable keyword symbols. The artist icon now uses the set styling "Illustrator and Designer Color" for its color. Fixed typos.]
[28/04/20: Fixed a bug preventing Custom Symbol 0 from displaying and preventing the Insert Symbol menu from opening.]
[27/04/20: MASSIVE update with a large number of changes to coincide with the release of LoR's first expansion. These changes include many new keywords, region updates, automatic keyword formatting, font updates and customisation, coloured backgrounds, package improvements, visual improvements and more. Click here for details.]
[1/11/19: Keyword symbols now display properly on the large spell template when using multiple keywords. Removed some white space on the edges of images on spell templates.]
[31/10/19: Fixed a bug that prevented the pack from functioning correctly on MSE 2.0.0.]
This is an additional download for MSE that allows you to design any and all kinds of cards in the style of the League of Legends card game, Legends of Runeterra. The download contains game files to support LoR card design as well as nine templates: Champion, Follower and Spell frames in both a small and large resolution version, plus templates for designing tooltips and full art splashes. Additionally, sample sets (pictured below) are included for you to explore and get a feel of how to use the template pack, and font files are included to get your cards looking like the real deal.
There are now two downloads available:
• LoR Template Pack: As an MSE add-on, this is still the go-to download for anybody who already uses MSE.
• MSE-LoR: This is a stripped down version of MSE perfect for anybody who just wants to design LoR cards. Simply unzip and download with no other downloads necessary and no MTG or Yugioh frames cluttering up your interface.
General notes are below: you can read a fuller documentation in the pack's README text file. Please feel free to post any requests, queries or problems below and I'll do my best to respond.
Installation
lor-template-pack.zip: Once you've downloaded the template pack, unzip it and move the ten folders within the "data" folder into the "data" folder your MSE folder. Once the files are in place, close MSE if it's open, then relaunch. You should now see LoR as a game type option on the "New Set" popup.
mse-lor.zip: Once you've downloaded the zip, unzip it to a location on your computer, ideally one with permissions (i.e. your Documents rather than your Program files). Open Magic Set Editor 2, then launch MSE through mse.exe.
In either case, make sure to install the four font files that contained in the "font" folder of the zip. You have to open them and click "Install" for them to display correctly.
Templates
The LoR template pack contains the Champion, Follower, and Spell templates, each 340x512, and a larger version of each at 680x1024. The larger ones are obviously higher resolution, but may not actually fit on your screen. If you want to use them but are unable to view them properly then you can either fill in the lower fields in the equivalent smaller template and switch to the larger version once you're done, or use the "Rotate card" bottom to get to the lower fields. Note that the former method will stretch any art already applied and may reset your styling options.
Additionally, there is now a Tooltip template for designing keyword descriptions, and Splash templates for designing full art flavour splashes.
Keyword Autofill
As of the Rising Tides update, keywords will format automatically. This includes regular keywords, action keywords, spell keywords, trigger keywords, and even some game terms like "Strongest" and "everywhere". '@' will automatically convert to the Skill icon. These autoreplaces are found in Edit -> Auto Replace, where you can tamper with them and make your own.
In-line colour coding
You can turn ability text yellow for keywords by enclosing it in [] brackets. You can turn ability text blue for card names by enclosing it {} brackets. You can remove colour tags from a section of text by enclosing it in ** asterisks.
In-line keyword symbols
You can insert symbols in abilities mid-sentence in a few different ways. Format -> Insert Symbol will show you a list of keyword icons you can insert, or you can type the equivalent letter and symbol-ify it by either enclosing it in () brackets or by highlighting it and pressing the star shaped symbol button or by pressing CTRL-M. The letter codes for the keywords are as follows:
• A: Last Breath
• B: Barrier
• C: Challenger
• D: Double Attack
• E: Elusive
• F: Fearsome
• G: Fleeting
• H: SpellShield
• I: Frostbite
• K: Capture
• L: Lifesteal
• N: Deep
• O: Overwhelm
• P: Ephemeral
• Q: Quick Attack
• R: Regeneration
• S: Stun
• T: Tough
• U: Attune
• V: Vulnerable
• W: Scout
• Y: Fury
• /: Can't Attack
• \: Can't Block
• !: Burst
• ?: Fast
• .: Slow
• @: Skill
You can also use the numbers 0-9 to insert a custom symbol. These are contained within the "custom" folder of lor.mse-game and can be edited to represent a custom keyword reference. Speaking of which...
Custom keywords and regions
The Set Info tab contains 10 fields for custom keyword icons (for keyword boxes, rather than the in-line ones above) and 5 fields for custom region icons. To use these, create your custom icons - you can use the existing ones in the template folders as a reference - and place them into the "custom" folder of lor.mse-game. Don't overwrite the existing custom icons, as they're used for in-line symbols. Then type the filenames of your icons, complete with extension (e.g. "spellshield.png") into the custom link fields. Your icons should now appear in the menus for the region and keyword box fields. If you instead get an error, try restarting or clicking File -> Reload Data as MSE doesn't recognise new assets automatically.
Keywords tab
Yes, it's disabled. Yes, it's meant to be. Don't worry about it.
Art tips
There are a few things I couldn't get MSE to do automatically, most of which are related to art. Firstly, here's a tip on how to make your card art look much better in a frame by blurring and darkening the lower half:
• After pasting your art into your card, cut it out again and paste it into your Image Editor Of Choice.
• Duplicate the layer, the blur it. My Image Editor Of Course is paint.net and I love a good Gaussian blur with radius 50 myself (or 100 on a large frame) but you do you.
• If the lower half of the image is light or high contrast, make Brightness/Contrast adjustments so that it looks nice and dark and plain, ready for white text.
• Apply a transparency gradient from about a 2/3 of the way up the image to 1/3 of the way up the image. This should make it so that your art is normal on the top half and plain on the bottom half.
• Copy the image and paste it back into your card.
For spell card art, instead paste your art into the top image field normally,
Secondly, if you love transparent backgrounds like I do, here's how to do that:
• Once you've finished your card, paste the render into your Image Editor Of Choice.
• Go into the template folder the template your used (for instance, if you used "Spell Large" then go into "lor-spell-large.mse-style") and open the"transparentedges" folder.
• Follow the folders according to the stylings on your card until you reach the relevant image file. Open it in a separate layer/image to your render.
• Select the magenta portion of the image with the wand tool or equivalent, then invert your selection so that the edge portion of the image is selected. Copy it, then paste it directly onto your render to remove the white edges.
• If you're using art/designer credit fields and you wish to keep them, you can cut them out and paste them onto a separate later before pasting in the new edges. Once you've done that, use a plugin such as the Make Transparent plugin for paint.net to convert the white space into empty space and then merge down. Come to think of it, if you have a Make Transparent plugin then you don't actually need this method at all, but whatever.
Known Issues
• Switching between templates on cards will cause it to lose its stylings and uncheck the "Options specific to this card" box. I'm not sure how to fix this other than by avoiding it in general and only switching templates as soon as you start designing each card, but that isn't really feasible if you're switching between small and large templates or copying a level 1 champ to create your level 2; in these cases make sure to take note of your styling options beforehand and to check the box before re-entering them.
• There is a minor glitch where the "Type" column of the cardlist doesn't update when it should; this seems to be most prominent when switching levels on a champion after switching template. You can force it to update by either restarting MSE or clicking File -> Reload Data.
• There is a rare glitch where the "Type" column says "Spell" instead of "Spell — Slow" for slow spells. Restarting or reloading data doesn't fix this, and may actually cause it. If anybody actually encounters this bug, please let me know with as much info as possible because it's happening for
