Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and eighty-eighth challenge! The winner of the "Bottom of the Ninth" poll was @niridulian with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Let's go to flavortown! Design a vanilla creature. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I had been designing some classic D&D monsters as Magic Cards for a bit, and this was one of my favorite designs I had come up with.

Is e.g. Lhurgoyf a vanilla for the purposes of this contest?

Designed sometime around the turn of the aughts, I'm surprised that Wizards still hasn't made another creature with this p/t combination, much less a vanilla with it:
Ficus Sliver Creature--Treefolk Plant Sliver 3/8

Is e.g. Lhurgoyf a vanilla for the purposes of this contest? The wiki says "refers to creatures with no rules text". Lhurgy has some rules text to determine its * value so I don't think it counts as vanilla.

Is e.g. Lhurgoyf a vanilla for the purposes of this contest? Obviously @niridulian has the final say in this topic, but personally I'd say no. I know some people refer to Tarmogoyf as "basically vanilla", but I prefer the correct definition - so no rules text allowed whatsoever (so flavor and/or reminder text only).
EDIT: Just noticed I was ninja'd xD

An old design (from TemporalMTG, if any of you remember it), but probably the best I can contribute here... (Flavortext by Pipsqueak, design & mechanic by me.)

This just feels weird, is all - is it really a design contest if you can't actually write anything in the rules box?

It's one of the more restrictive challenges for sure, but you can still double down on flavor. There are already some cool designs submitted as well.

A special star for a special creature. I will always resort to awful photoshopping before letting my cards be judged by their flavour text.

Actually, ignore my concept above - time to repeat an older statement (Also how often du you get the chance to quote yourself on a card's flavor text after all )
{Explanation} I still remember when WotC didn't even dare designing 3/1's below CMC3 as they feared they might be too powerful for Limited, until they finally gave it a try at two mana an had to realize: Having only a single toughness really keeps these creatures in check. So they continued pushing 3/1's at CMC2 (as well as 2/1's for btw.), and expecially considering the most recently continuing power creep I'm still convinced (to be honest more convinced than ever) an uncommon 3/1 vanilla for is just a matter of time.

You should have been there when I came up with the challenge to only use one-syllable words on your card design, woof! People died that day.
That aside, I think it's fine to have these more restrictive challenges once in a while. I wouldn't want them coming up too often, but they force you to change the way you go about designing your card, which is interesting.

I think the uses of mana gimmicks in this contest speak to our frustrations, as designers, with being barred from doing actual, well, card design. We get around it any way we can. If we're told we can't use text, well, we just put it somewhere else. And I think that's beautiful. This, however... this is not so beautiful.

@niridulian : Fair enough. Replaced with placeholder entry until I can think of something better. Edit: I'll go with this, I guess. {Previous Entry}

Hehehe, I knew this challenge would have been a tough cookie to deal with I'm impressed by the creativity of all the workarounds over the vanilla clause!
Parasign sorry, but I think that reminder text counts as rules text despite the formatting (see my answer to voltaic-qui about the lhurgoyf)
EDIT: My entry is the Weathered Soul I posted in the second page.
