You may or may not be familiar with Inktober, an annual art challenge with list of prompts for each day of the month of October. Participants produce ink drawings based on the prompts and post them online, as both a means of quickfire daily drawing practice and as a way of applying one's personal style to the rather generic prompts. vanishedSchism from the discord server had the idea to design cards each day to fit the above prompts, and the idea proved extremely popular. I decided to make this thread to invite you all to take part before we all give up in two or three days. If you're interested, cajun has prepared a skeleton with the prompts replacing the collector number in the bottom left that you may find useful. As for sharing cards, I plan to post mine on the discord and on this thread, though I'll stick to one post here and edit the cards into spoilers to avoid spam. It should be fun comparing everyone's different interpretations of the prompts, particularly ones that use existing MTG terms. If you want some extra challenge, you could impose a design restriction on yourself at the start, such as only making red cards or only making cards of a specific type. To clarify: you don't have to use the day's word on the card. Any card that's mechanically or flavourfully inspired by the prompt qualifies.

Day 21 — Treasure
I've started going about my daily designs by going to Artstation and searching for the latest posts under the day's prompts. This is good because it gives me inspiration for designs, and also because it gives me art.

Love the idea! Alright, count me in – I'll use this post to accumulate my entries. If you want some extra challenge, you could impose a design restriction on yourself at the start, such as only making red cards or only making cards of a specific type. Obviously, there can be only one design restriction for me: “When in doubt, do a common.“ { Cardtober 1st – Ring} | Notes: - When I came up with the flavor I wanted to go for, I was quite amused to notice the name isn't used on an official card. Seriously, how come, Wizards?
{ Cardtober 2nd – Mindless} | Notes: - I'm definitely not the first one to think of „reverse Graft“ as a mechanic (I might actually not even be the first one to name it Taint), but even though I always thought the concept to be interesting, I never really toyed with it myself – so I decided to use it for my Zombie card. Have to say, I think this mechanic is really hard to balance without some heavy playtesting and most likely needs a rather low as-fan at common to not ruin all X/1s in Limited.. Still, I like how this card turned out
{ Cardtober 3rd – Bait} | Notes: - This one was quite easy. Quite a while ago, I came up with the original version of my anglerfish for my upcoming Luvion set. Obviously I had to rebalance it slightly to keep my chosen rarity restriction – so as I wanted to keep the Lure-effect I decided to combine it with Eldraine's Food tokens.
{ Cardtober 4th – Freeze} | Notes: - Considering Freezing literally is „official“ Magic slang, coming up with just any possible approach really isn't an issue today – so to spicen things up, I really wanted to do a nonblue design. Then I remembered WotC said they wanted to give deeptapping lands as temporary land destruction a try, so I knew which way I wanted to go. Would have loved to just do a colorshifted Mana Vapors, but my chosen rarity restriction obviously wouldn't allow this.
{ Cardtober 5th – Build} | Notes: |
{ Cardtober 6th – Husky} | Notes: - I kind of doubt this is what the person (Jake Parker?) whom came up with the limits had in mind, but I just couldn't resist Also, I really like Gingerbrute's new evasion concept, so I really want to adapt it for red in the future.
{ Cardtober 7th – Enchanted} | Notes: - I've said it a few times in the past already: While I like the concept of Aura swap, the mechanic is inherently flawed by bypassing mana costs (including color) – so the best way to fix this would be by simply grating the mechanic to the cards you want to swap in instead.
{ Cardtober 8th – Frail} | Notes: - To be honest, I was rather clueless for this challenge at first. After some pondering I knew I wanted to do creature card with toughness 1 but nothing else – so I looked though some artworks until I found this one and instantly fell in love with it. Afterwards, this really basically turned into a Picture into Card contest
{ Cardtober 9th – Swing} | Notes: - I knew I wanted to do a hypnosis themed card right from the start – and with Mind Control effects only belonging to higher rarities had to settle with a Act of Treason effect. I thought about how to add a new spin to it while also wanting to add another color (as I already have designed three monored cards so far for this project) – so I came up with the final clause.
{ Cardtober 10th – Pattern} | Notes: - I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do at first, but then I at least came up with butterfly wings as a possible flavor approach for today's prompt – and when I stumbled across this artwork, I definitely knew which design I wanted to tackle. This kind of effect has recently been used with slight variations in blue as well as white, so to offer a new spin for my design, I decided to go for a hybrid cost.
{ Cardtober 11th – Snow} | Notes: - Up until the previous challenge, I've actually always worked one day in advance to make sure I'd have a small buffer in case RL would keep me too busy – which is good as this is exactly what happened so I actually barely managed to post the tenth card in time. So to get back on track, I wanted to do a quick design for today's prompt – which is why I actually kind of cheated as I didn't come up with this design today but actually already a few days ago for the current Create A Land contest (merely added some flavor text using Barin Seik again). Then again, as I really like the design and also wanted to soon add a land to my Cardtober list anyway, I'm quite happy about this choice. The next design will however be a new one – I promise
{ Cardtober 12th – Dragon} | Notes: - This would once again was a case of „there is a very simple way to do this challenge“, which is why I really didn't want to do a dragon card itself – and if possible not even a red card. So after some pondering, I decided I wanted to a support card to a Limited dragon theme (Tarkir could really have used a few more of these, if I remember the community feedback from back then correctly) – and when I remembdered this artwork I actually used in PoA long ago, I knew what I wanted to do. Cost taken from Moonmist.
{ Cardtober 13th – Ash} | Notes: - I'm soo sorry
{ Cardtober 14th – Overgrown} | Notes: - Well, a few days ago I intentionally desigend a green card to not do another red design – and now I'm completely trapped within a green streak of cards xD I tried to come up with a different design – but when I came up with the Retrace-Naturalize concept, I just had to do it anyway.
{ Cardtober 15th – Legend} | Notes: - I guess it's not too difficult to see why this prompt was rather difficult to do given my additional restriction – and I definitely wouldn't want to do a common legend – but after some pondering I finally decided I wanted to design a legend's follower. And when I decided to do a white card (simply to add more white cards to my Cardtober rooster), this is what I ended up with almost instantly.
{ Cardtober 16th – Wild} | Notes: - The biggest task for today's prompt for me was to not again have an entry in the (rather obvious) Gruul colors. So instead I decided: Why not colorshift a Gruul mechanic into a color it could easily fit into (and probably would have received a printing in if it were not for Ravnica's Guild structure)?
{ Cardtober 17th – Ornament} | Notes: - I'd love to teel you an elaborate tale of how I came up with the concept fir this promt, but it basically was a sudden inspiration and the literally designed itself. I was a bit unsure about the cost at first, but I think should be appropriate. Also Baurin! I really should use him more..
{ Cardtober 18th – Misfit} | Notes: - So for the very first time, I was not able to keep my deadline To not get behind any further, I'll leave this one behind for now and will complete it later
EDIT: And finally, almost one week later (it's the 24th as I'm writing this), I've been able to sit down and add the missing card. I mostly knew I wanted to hate on Equipments in some way for a few days now, but it took me quite a while to find some fitting artwort for what I had in mind.
{ Cardtober 19th – Sling} | Notes: - To be honest, this is not the card I had in mind at first. Originally I wanted to do a red Pacifism which would grant the creature the ability to ping a player, but I wasn't really able to find any art I liked for it – but when I stumbled across this one, I knew I wanted to do a green card and kind of came up with this design instantly.
{ Cardtober 20th – Tread} | Notes: - When I saw today's prompt, I knew I wanted to do this artwork. I was a bit unsure about the right costing at first, but considering WotC has basically done an Unsummon with upside in the past already, I think keeping it as basic as possible works just fine. Also I totally want to do a set with Snow spells one day in the future
{ Cardtober 21st – Treasure} | Notes: - Inspired by Gingerbrute and Golden Egg, I instantly knew I wanted to do a „Treasure token +X“ – I just wasn't sure what additional ability to add and also how to really balance the card. Especially not being „allowed“ to change the mana ability into a filtering one made it more difficult than initially expected, but I think this final version is fine.
{ Cardtober 22nd – Ghost} | Notes: - I've said it multiple times in the past: I think Haunt definitely deserves a second chance. Many people think of it as a complex and convoluted mechanic – but they couldn't be further away from the truth! Haunt by itself is insanely easy, it's just that it was used exclusively combined with overly complicated mechanics. It should rather have ben used in an Aura-like way, which by the way not only is less complicated but also fits the flavor of „getting haunted“ much better as well.
{ Cardtober 23rd – Ancient} | Notes: - Today's prompt really was designed to be combined with the Historic mechanic. Also I really wanted to use that artwork again and needed another blue card to my Cardtober rooster – so here we go! Go blue dwarfs!
{ Cardtober 24th – Dizzy} | Notes: - I have to admit, I'm totally cheating again as this is not a new design but rather a slightly reflavored reprint of the card Crippling Spirit from my Pyramids of Atuum set – but no matter how often I tried thinking up different concepts, I always ended up liking this one better. So, oh well xD
{ Cardtober 25th – Tasty} | Notes: - Using a Food token to fulfill this prompt might be the obvious choice – but this time I just couldn't resist The design itself just basically was a sudden inspiration that popped into my head, I think by making the ability rather expensive the card should fine at common. Also yes, I intentionally used white mana as part of the hybrid cost even though ELD only had food cards in black/green.
{ Cardtober 26th – Dark} | Notes: - I really, really didn't want to design a black card for this prompt – but just as well didn't want to go with the second most obvious choice and design a white card instead. But after some pondering, I remembered the powerful black flames and used them to design a red burn spell – following the new „loses indestructible“ rather than „can't be regenerated“ wording. So far it has only been done at rare, sure – but I think a design like this works at common as well as long as it's reasonably well balanced.
{ Cardtober 27th – Coat} | Notes: - So after everything went so well with just one mere fluke so far, of course there had to be three days one after another where I had no chance to get any work done whatsoever almost by the end of Cardtober. So just as last time, I'll ignore these three prompts for now and will do the one that's due for now – to hopefully catch up as fast as possible
EDIT: And with this, I've caught up just in time (it's the 31st right now). As for this card's flavor, I wanted to go with a badass „you can't touch me“ looking coat – so I chose two abilities I think fit this theme well. The twobrid cost is my own take on Magic's recent move towards colored artifacts to better balance them out – while I get the concept, I'm not a big fan of blurring the (already rather thin) line between artifacts and enchantments even further. So as a compromise, I decided to go with a twobrid cost instead.
{ Cardtober 28th – Ride} | Notes: - So after everything went so well with just one mere fluke so far, of course there had to be three days one after another where I had no chance to get any work done whatsoever almost by the end of Cardtober. So just as last time, I'll ignore these three prompts for now and will do the one that's due for now – to hopefully catch up as fast as possible
EDIT: Allright, this one was an easy one to catch up to. Currently it's still the 30th and I knew I wanted to do a Vehicle and most likely a cartridge in particular – but when I then stumbled across the artwork while looking for some spider stuff for the Catch prompt, I knew I had to use it here instantly. Balancing Vehicles and/or Monstrosity cards at common is alwas a bit tricky, but after looking at some existing cards, I think this one is decently done.
{ Cardtober 29th – Injured} | Notes: - So after everything went so well with just one mere fluke so far, of course there had to be three days one after another where I had no chance to get any work done whatsoever almost by the end of Cardtober. So just as last time, I'll ignore these three prompts for now and will do the one that's due for now – to hopefully catch up as fast as possible
EDIT: So, it's the 31st as I'm writing this and I don't really have much to say about this one. I kind of instantly knew which approach I wanted to take, I just wasn't sure whether to cost it at merely or not. In the end, I decided otherwise to better fit its rarity.
{ Cardtober 30th – Catch} | Notes: - My first thought was „catching something in a net“ and then I decided „but I want it to be able to catch everything“.. And to be honest, that was all the thinking done, the card literally designed itself afterwards
{ Cardtober 31st – Ripe} | Notes: - And suddenly, we've arived at the final prompt already – time surely flew by fast. Anyway, not much to say here – I just wanted to do a top-down modal spell, so that's exactly what I did

Hey, this looks like a fun challenge to never finish! All my cards are going to be references to exesting cards? Seems like a good restriction but I may give up from it even faster than from the challenge itself. {Day 1 - Ring}

I came up with this mechanic, grind, last week. It's designed to act like trample, but instead of physical damage to an opponent's life, it deals mental damage to their library. I figure, there are definitely blue-black cards and decks that want to have big graveyards of their own, and self-mill can act as a balancing force anyway.

Consolidating all of my upcoming entries into one single post for convenience. Will update with days 1 and 2 as well. {Day 3 -- Bait} This card went through a LOT of iteration. I'm still not super duper happy with it, but it works well alongside yesterday's Blighted Rider. Abyssal is like "graveyard formidable," but since, generally speaking, the graveyard becomes more creature-dense as the game goes on, abyssal requires power 10 or greater. Thematically, you're supposed to use this card along with others to "bait" opponents into making trades with your creatures, filling up graveyards as fast as possible. Millstone-focused blue decks that don't skimp on creatures will especially like this card. Also, you only need power 7 or greater in your graveyard--the Maiden can provide the other 3. {Day 4 -- Freeze} I have literally no idea if this card is good?? It definitely freezes stuff, at least. I feel like an overkill mechanic would slot well into the color pie as a deciduous mechanic that's primary in red and green but appears in all colors as needed. Also, hey, snow mana alongside colored mana in a card's cost could totally be a real design decision WOTC makes for, like, a Kaldheim set. {Day 5 -- Build} It was going to be an artifact. Then . . . it became not an artifact.

Yes, today's card has the same name as Daij_Djan's! Of course, I didn't know that until right this second. Call it plagiarism, or call it convergent design, it's probably just because the most usable art for the day's prompt was of huskies that looked rather boreal. Quite hilarious xD Let's call it "great minds think alike" Also I just noticed I used the creature type Dog rather than Hound.. Well, probably not the greatest mind after all (will be changed probably tomorrow)

In on the challenge! I'll even bring some meta design notes. {Column 1 — 1 to 10} {Day 1 — RING} It's a bell, and you're gonna ring the fucking bell when you get to 20 counters.
{Day 2 — MINDLESS} You asked for a mindless card, and I'm happy to provide.
{Day 3 — BAIT} I hope this is removal bait.
{Day 4 — FREEZE} The other players will freeze when you play this card.
{Day 5 — BUILD} Build your pyramid, and if it's big enough, you win!
{Day 6 — HUSKY} For this, I did a tiny bit of research towards the natural tendencies of huskies: they're hyperactive and like dragging around the sleighs and whatnot. If that's a stereotype, then never mind. Hyperactivity was turned into a drawback where it tilts if you didn't get it to do something. And the sleight thing made me turn it into a Vehicle animator. {Day 7 — ENCHANTED} If it's not enchanted yet, it will be. Soon. {Day 8 — FRAIL} Does that make your guy frail enough yet? {Day 9 — SWING} Liked Karona, False God? Welcome Anorak Truedog, a name that is in no way a reverse. {Day 10 — PATTERN} Once again, I decided to enforce the notion on the player. Here, the pattern is hopefully playing the same card every single time.
{Column 2 — 11 to 20} {Day 11 — SNOW} I wasn't gonna make the snow permanent thing because that was too easy, but red deeptapping lands can have some snow flavor. {Day 12 — DRAGON} Being a straight dragon was too easy, and I can't make players Dragons, sooooo... it'll make you play lots of Dragons. Hopefully.
{Day 13 — ASH} Won't make players throw ash at each other. {Day 14 — OVERGROWN} Well, this thing will grow fast. And you don't want it to grow too much but I don't think you get much of a choice that it will grow. {Day 15 — LEGEND} So, for all of you that play League of Legends, you might know about this guy. {Day 16 — WILD} The FT is a reference to an old video I saw that mocked a dialogue from The King of Fighters '96. Naturally, this means I had to make a Wildfire since there's something about fire 'round these parts. {Day 17 — ORNAMENT} It literally is just that. Won't serve much purpose. {Day 18 — MISFIT} Misfit is only a white terms for red doods. And don't worry, I don't like white either. {Day 19 — SLING} Another video reference that only those in the know will get, but at least this one is much more recent. {Day 20 — TREAD} I hope your land sees a lot of treading.
{Column 3 — 21 to 30} {Day 21 — TREASURE} This one is a meta joke to myself. I like Treasure enough that it's the primary theme of the Goblin tribe in Nethakra, but you know an entire plane I made that has a heavy Treasure theme..?
{Day 22 — GHOST} Tapping into evasion because you can't really touch'em.
{Day 23 — ANCIENT} This one is one of the most ancient figures in-universe.
{Day 24 — DIZZY} It's dizzy, and you'll want to keep it that way if it's the other way across the board.
{Day 25 — TASTY} Insert Food joke — yes I know, Food is pretty trash in the game, but it's tasty
{Day 26 — DARK} An old custom card of mine when I played Yu-Gi-Oh! was so generic and edgy I had to use it here. Effect not actually adapted from what it was.
{Day 27 — COAT} You know what else goes with it..?
{Day 28 — RIDE} It's gonna be a quick ride for sure.
{Day 29 — INJURED} The card's the injury, because I couldn't be meta and ask you to snap your opponent's leg.
{Day 30 — CATCH} The second silver-bordered card. Catch it first if you can!
{Day 31 — RIPE} Hopefully you're gonna invest long enough for it to be.

And with a bit less than three more hours to go (at least here in Germany), I'm actually done It got a bit close to the end when I had my three day break with only two more days to go, but it all worked out nicely in the end. Have to say, this was really fun and I definitely enjoy my completed rooster of cards. Will definitely do something like this again sometimes in the future
