Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and seventy-sixth challenge! The winner of the "Let's Get This Party Sparked" poll was spazlaz with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Design a card that somehow references an older, already existing card somehow in its mechanics. An example of this would be Temporal Mastery, a card that acts like Time Walk. Or Echo of Eons, a card that acts like Timetwister. Or it could do something different than the older card you are referencing, its mechanics only need to be inspired by it, not follow it to the letter. Note: As this challenge has some overlap with CotW #269, please don't reuse any previous entries from that contest. ~Daij_Djan To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Does anyone remember Elite Inquisitor? I hope so, because this card isn't going to make much sense otherwise. This card used to be pro-Humans, pro-Angels, pro-Spirits, but I figured that making a straight flip of the original was a little boring. So, since this creature is meant to be a mortal enemy of Humans in the same way that original Innistrad was pretty much Humans versus the world, I gave it protection from two of the things the white-based Humans of Innistrad tend to use to deal with monsters: Pacifism effects and tappers.

Why does the flavor text feel like it breaks the 4th wall?

Might change the entry later, but one of the first things that comes to mind is Akroma's iconic "ability salad." Here's one for black. Tarzoth, Demon of Pride Legendary Creature — Demon Flying, menace, deathtouch, lifelink, haste, protection from green and from white "Arrogance is a sin only if committed by the weak.6/6 P.S. How does one put a flavor bar again? Edit: Removed regenerate since it's obsolete. Will put up a render once I have access to the program. Thanks for the input, Neottolemo . Haven't been up to date when it comes to phased out mechanics. I didn't even know prowess had been discontinued too. I had thought protection was similarly phased out and only kept it in homage to Akroma's card. I didn't know it was back albeit "on probation."

I don't really know what to do with these kinds of challenges, so I just went to Gatherer, hit "Random Card" until I got something neat. So here we are. Based on Ashen Powder.

Design name: Niv-Mizzet's Reproach Is it exile or destroy? Because the rules text says exile, but the reminder text says destroy.
EDIT: Exile on the streets, destroy between the sheets.
Sorry not sorry.

It's name is a bit on-the-nose with which card this is based off of, but otherwise why it makes 5/5 walls wouldn't make sense.

Someone convince me this doesn't fit the challenge. It totally does, doesn't it?
It's prolly still a bad idea to submit this and I'll choose another eventually. Probably.

I mean...it does mechanically reference Grizzly Bears and their ilk, so it does fit...technically XD

Referencing Ancestral Recall: Master of the Mind Sorcery Target player draws three cards. If you control a Jace planeswalker, you may pay instead of this spell's mana cost. Edit 1: Even for Mythic, the one-for-three felt forced, so I upped it a bit. I did decrease the initial cost to cast by 1 CMC, however. {Old} Master of the Mind Sorcery Target player draws three cards. If you control a Jace planeswalker, you may pay instead of this spell's mana cost.

This is Teysa Karlov by way of Panharmonicon, the same way Yarok is just Panhar with a body. I buffed "Teysa 9000" so it's better with the revolt mechanic. Possibly that makes this card *too* good?? Also, "Aethervolt" sounds like "Aether Revolt." So that's fun!

This one's a little out there but I based it on Empyrial Armor and the licids from the following block. It's difficult to find art assets for flip cards, but I think it cleans up the WALL OF TEXT that licids tend to have quite nicely. (reads in 5 lines instead of 6-8) When the Licid is flipped back to its basal form, it is no longer an aura and becomes unattached. Since attach is the primary action rather than flip, if the creature you would attach the licid to dies before you can attach it, the licid remains in creature form tapped. I've also omitted "Enchant Creature" in favor of a +P/+T box. This could cause a problem with rule 303.4j, but we can save that kind of rules lawyering for the oracle text. I feel that "Enchant creature" can be implied on Auras with +P/+T unless they have specialized targets since ~90% of auras enchant creatures and only creatures have power and toughness. A new player will probably be happier with the lucidity of the redesigned licid than with the completeness of its rules text. Unlike Empyrial Plate, which can be a game-ending bomb with few opportunities for counterplay when used in conjunction with a token generator such as Bitterblossom, this bad boy dies to Doom Blade or Shock any time they want to reequip it. It also cannot escape sweepers like WoG. Having a 3 CMC requirement will also turns the power level down from Plate since they'll have to play 5 cards to turn it on instead of only 4.

I decided to update one of my favorite cards, Mana Flare, and give it back part of its original power: Excess mana will burn you alive!

Actually, not like any of those - those target your own graveyard. Mine targets an opponent's. It's more akin to other things that bring back from an opponent's yard, which are irrelevant because my card is based on the one provided.

My point is that you could lay claim to any of those being your inspiration, as they all sac to return a creature from a player's graveyard, with your tweak being that the gy that's utilized is an opponent's instead of your own. In any case, they're all pretty similar takes on a stock effect.

This is a combination of a few cards, Baleful Eidolon and Bump in the Night for the bestow and the color variation between the normal casting cost and alternative casting cost. Then, I mixed in some Rakdos and Mardu flair with Master of Cruelties and Ankle Shanker. All these cards aren't too old, but I first started playing magic during Theros block and I think more can be done with the Bestow mechanic for sure. Version 1

You're breaking the Color Pie with that bestow cost. The way to think about it is "Does this color have access to these abilities?" is primary in first strike, but deathtouch absolutely goes against 's core philosophies. A better bestow cost would've been .
