Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and sixty-ninth! The winner of the "Blue Screen of Death" poll was @mk with...And the challenge issued by our runner-up was... The Modern Horizins spoiler season is upon us, and I have to say: I really like what WotC are doing with the set. It has caused some confusions because some fans thought the name to be a bit misleading – as this is not a set purely aimed at the Modern format but rather a straight to Modern set with higher complexity level and a Timespiral-like flavor. Cards like Umezawa's Charm, Ravenous Giant or Lesser Manticore play hommage to well-known old designs in name, flavor or mechanically – and your challenge is to follow in these footsteps: Design a card fitting for Modern Horizins referring to an older design. Please keep in mind: Modern Horizons features no new mechanics but may return already Modern legal mechanics up to Dragons of Tarkir. Please let us know which card your new design is playing homage to, in case it's not as obvious To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Alchor's Tome Artifact , : Return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield under its owner’s control. At the beginning of the next end step, if that creature is still on the battlefield, you gain control of it. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
Changed because of Erin from Esurance's commentary:
Alchor's Tome
Artifact
, : Return target creature card from a graveyard other than yours to the battlefield under its owner’s control. That creature gains haste until end of turn. At the beginning of the next end step, if that creature is still on the battlefield, you gain control of it. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.

Attendant of Awakening Creature - Elf Druid Whenever Attendant of Awakening deals combat damage to a player, you may create that many 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens. "She'll be back one day! She already arose once, she can do it again!"
1/3 No one else likes Rith, the Awakener. I like Rith, the Awakener. Then again, I know only the bare minimum about her lore other than she's dead and likely we'll see nothing of her ever again, but dammit I can dream.

AFAIK Sensei's Divining Top was banned for causing slow play, not for power, so maybe this makes it better. It's only repeatable under certain circumstances and it's costing more demanding mana to use every turn

Evil Coco, that’s a real, already existing card. Am I missing something?

I had an idea for this which I thought was too clever, but then appeared almost exactly in MH1. (tho i had kick-start rather than retrace) Decided to do this dumb interaction instead. The gold clause is just a very Alara way of avoiding the abuse case of X = 1, where it can be used to turn your Ancestral Vision into an Ancestral Recall for , though looking at the thread I'm not sure that should have been a concern

Sliver Gorger Creature - Sliver Madness Each Sliver creature card you own that isn’t on the battlefield has madness. The madness cost is equal to its mana cost. (If you discard a card with madness, discard it into exile. When you do, cast it for its madness cost or put it into your graveyard.)2/1 Can you guess the original? If not, click here. I have no clue how to find fitting Sliver art, so I'll just leave this without.

Feedback time! Tesagk: I knew the reference by name and picture alone. Splice is kind of a flavour fail since the spirits fought the mortals on Kamigawa and arcanes represent spirit magic sdfkjgh: Resurrecting a creature for every round without any setup before is really powerful. You kind of tend to make cards that are around the edge of op, right? Aarhg: Fading has never been in Modern. You could use Vanishing 3 though. gurfafflekins: Rith, together with the four other Invasion dragons dealt a major blow against the Phyrexians during the war back then. They also could have taken over the world but Darigaaz (or more correctly Rhammidarigaaz) decided to rather kill himself than become a cruel tyrant over all of Dominaria. Stupid dragon. Now for your card: I don't get why it is a may-trigger. Why wouldn't you want ot create Saprolings? They are adorable! Jartis: Works, I guess. ludvikeverviolet: Is this just Lightning Bolt on legs or am I missing some other reference? EDIT: Snapcaster Mage, right? jarribas309: There is a "pay" too much in your text. sade612: Maybe you might want to turn more towards Sorcerer's Strongbox? It's really frustrating and unfun to pay 5 mana to do nothing half the time. marshmellow: Sorry, I don't get the reference. Maybe Firemind Vessel with an upgrade? kinotherapy: That is a really nice way of going around X = 1. I still think with X = 2 you can do pretty dumb stuff in the right deck. But I also think that's just me, since some card for XAB won a CotW somewhere back then. fluffydeathbringer: Path to Magara. Fun. Xenagos: Nice build around card.

Feedback time! Splice is kind of a flavour fail since the spirits fought the mortals on Kamigawa and arcanes represent spirit magic It was a very intentional choice. This isn't a spell cast by a Kitsune, it's a more primal thing.

Flo00 , wow, you're right. I guess I didn't read that part of the challenge properly. Instead of just swapping the fading for vanishing, I'm gonna use this as a chance to change my entry.
This could potentially be pretty strong, but still nowhere near as powerful as the card it's calling back to. If you can't guess which card that is, scroll back up to my original post to see.

Kreig's Assault Sorcery Hellbent— If you have no cards in hand, until end of turn, if a red source you control would deal damage, it deals that much damage plus 1 instead. Keldon Assault deals 3 damage to up to one target creature or planeswalker. Jump-start A reference to Gathan Raiders both in flavor and in being a mixed-mechanic card. e: changed name to make the reference more obvious, now references Kreig (a Gathan) as well.

Here is a really cool creature.
You can use it as a fetch land, or any utility land you wish.

Charge Across the Araba, all is more or less forgiven. (Discussion question: does Charge Across the Araba have the worst ratio of "cool name" to "good card" of any modern-border Magic card?)

"The Meteor Hammer spell was used by Tetsuo Umezawa to destroy the Imperial Shrine and thus rob Nicol Bolas of the mana base he needed to manifest in Dominaria. Tetsuo was taught this spell by Kolo Meha. The spell made the warhammer of Jorgan Hage fly into the sky until it reached the edge of the atmosphere, from where it plummeted like a meteor on Tetsuo's command. The spell was instrumental in the destruction of Nicol Bolas and the liberation of the Madaran Empire from his tyrannical rule." ( Source) So, this is obviously not Hage's hammer, but this card here doesn't mirror the spell how it was used by Tetsuo, only the spell per se. Wording might be strange, but I couldn't think of a better wording: As X is double the CMC, half X is exactly the CMC, so sacrifice something with CMC 5 to deal 10 damage and to let the player sacrifice five permanents.

References Oubliette, a card that I wish got reprinted in this set. Tried to do a black O-Ring effect that's still in color pie, while also increasing the power level to potentially see play in some kind of Modern mono-black control deck, or more appropriately, the Pauper deck Oubliette itself is a part of. EDIT: Changed "less than 2" to "2 or less".
