Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our two-hundred and sixty-sixth! The winner of the "Negative, sir" poll was ameisenmeister with...And the challenge issued by one of our runner-ups was... As we all know, everything is better down where it's wetter. This week's challenge is to design a creature of the sea, be it fish, merfolk, kraken, anything you can think of. If it lives in water, it's fair game. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I was pondering what sea creature to use, when I remembered that Cephilids are a thing. But then I decided, maybe I should try something a tad different... {My Entry}

Ykion's Mounted Creature - Merfolk Fish creatures you control have trample. When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 green and blue Fish creature token with, "When ~ enters the battlefield, choose a Merfolk creature. As long as you control ~, that creature cannot be blocked." 1/3 Two sea creatures for the price of one! I used hybrid mana to be flexible, making a green creature unblockable is a bit of a stretch, but green does have its own forms of unblockable (power X or less) so I'm hoping people will forgive me on that front.
Edit 2019/05/06 12:35 EST: Changed the mana cost to better reflect flavor Edit 2019/05/10 10:47 EST: Changed a couple of things on the card to help with green flavor. Altered mana cost so that hybridization isn't a part of it. I still think that having a card with hybrid and non-hybrid mana is a worthy concept, however. {Old Versions}Ykion's Mounted Creature - Merfolk When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 green and blue Fish creature token with, "When ~ enters the battlefield, choose a Merfolk creature. As long as you control ~, that creature cannot be blocked." 1/3

Eh, why not?
Researcher Burmac Legendary Creature--Vedalken Merfolk Mutant Partner with Rakness, the Scorn of Sieges (When this creature enters the battlefield, target player may put Rakness into their hand from their library, then shuffle.) Graft 1 (This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you may move a +1/+1 counter from this creature onto it.) Evolve (Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature has greater power or toughness than this creature, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.) Evolve Each other creature on the battlefield and each creature card in all other zones gets -1/+2. 3/0
Yes, this does have evolve twice. Burmac is my entry, but I thought I'd also show you his partner, just so you could get the whole picture:
Rakness, the Scorn of Sieges Legendary Creature--Giant Berserker Partner with Researcher Burmac (When this creature enters the battlefield, target player may put Burmac into their hand from their library, then shuffle.) Trample, haste Other creatures you control get +2/+0. Each creature you control can’t be blocked by creatures with higher toughness. 6/3

Whirlpool Kraken Creature - Kraken When Whirlpool Kraken enters the battlefield, for each Island you control, you may tap target permanent. Those permanents don't untap during their controllers' next untap steps. 5/5

For anyone wondering, between Nautilus, Trilobite, Oyster, and Starfish...there are 7 cards. If you add in Homarid and Jellyfish it only goes up to 24. Damn Merfolk, taking up the seas. XD

Edit 2019/05/06 12:35 EST: Changed the mana cost to better reflect flavor So why is this green again? Also, I hate that you changed the cost to be rather than . There has never been a card with a hybrid mana symbol of the same color as non-hybrid mana symbol in the same cost. Sure there were cards with an M(N/O) cost, but never a M(N/M) one. It's horrible design and frankly, is a betrayal of what a hybrid mana symbol is supposed to be. It's a mono-blue card that has a slightly more forgiving cost if you happen to playing 2 plus colors and one of those colors happens to be green. The actual text box of the card is neat, but the cost is a total no go for me.

The actual text box of the card is neat, but the cost is a total no go for me. Idk about a betrayal. I'm firmly of the mind that you shouldn't not do something just because it hasn't been done before, unless it explicitly breaks the game (because sometimes even pie breaks are okay...sometimes). Also, if something was done a certain way a long time ago, that doesn't mean it should still be done that way. There's a lot of big changes in "how things are done" throughout Magic's history that didn't fit with how a mechanic was used the first time around, but have become the new standard for that mechanic. Maybe this isn't the best way of handling it (not commenting on it, by the way, just a concession to get to my next point), but if we never do anything differently than it's been done before, what's the point in even designing? Just some thoughts. Edit: melono Do you intend the scry effect to scale off of damage dealt? For example, if the fish got -2/-2, would it only be able to scry up to 2? If not, I would probably just word it as "whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, scry x, where x is less than y" with y being whatever the Dive number is.

Counterpoint: Magic is a pretty old game by now. If something hasn't been done before, especially something it's technically been able to do for a long while (14 years, in this case, since original Ravnica when hybrid was introduced), there is often a good reason for it.
In the case of this particular use of hybrid mana, just to elaborate on why it doesn't quite work, it's kind of a subversion of what the mechanic is for. Hybrid mana is about the overlap between colours, the things either one of the two components can do individually. Pairing it with normal colored mana of one of those components, therefore, doesn't do anything.
For this particular card, we've got blue mana, so the full blue toolbox is open to the card in question. Adding green-blue hybrid doesn't actually add anything to that toolbox, because what it adds is the intersection of green and blue, which is already covered by the wider umbrella of blue as a whole. So the only real impact of adding that hybrid symbol is making the card green for effects that care about it and, as previously mentioned, making it marginally easier to cast if you happen to be in both green and blue.
Hopefully that makes sense!
I'm with digi on the design, by the way - it's a pretty cool effect! It's just probably better placed in simple mono-blue. I get that here the hybrid mana is probably intended to signpost a particular faction, but remember that most multicolored factions do have monocolored cards - [card]Canyon Lurkers[/card], for example, is unmistakeably Mardu even though it's mono-red and doesn't have the Mardu keyword.

It took 12 years for us to get uncommon planeswalkers (remember they were originally printed at rare in Lorwyn and then upped to mythic for later reprints). MaRo has said we'll see uncommon and rare planeswalkers again if a set needs them. There was nothing stopping them from being uncommon for those 12 years other than it's just how they were printed. Things are always changing in Magic, it doesn't matter how long it's been around.

If not, I would probably just word it as "whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, scry x, where x is less than y" with y being whatever the Dive number is. That was indeed my intention, X damage = X scrying. But it's a bit too situation dependent to be an actual keyword thinking about why I worded it like I did, so I'll be changing my entry later. Thanks for the feedback!

Keeping it simple this week with everyone's favorite creature of the sea.
Creature - Dragon Flash Whenever Gulf Ravager enters the battlefield or attacks, it gains flying until end of turn. “Calm waters and clear skies, captain! This could be our lucky day.” 4/4

it's not quite a proper hunted creature but... Hunted Leviathan Creature - Leviathan Trample When Hunted Leviathan enters the battlefield, target opponent creates eight 1/1 white human creature tokens. Then you may tap up to eight creatures. 8/8 {render} yes it's just moby dick
