Hey just wanted to see if anyone else happened to check out the beta for MTG Arena yet?
I have and the program seems to be pretty good. I am not a huge fan of all the animations but they looks more modern then MTGO and I am likely not the target audience for that anyways. I am not the biggest fan of the economy as you can't trade or buy cards. Seems pretty grindy which doesn't seem like a good way to get a specific deck you want. There are wildcards and you can convert your 5th copies of cards which helps some. But again, I am probably not the target audience as I like to play the sub game on MTGO of magic card stocks. I buy and sell all the time and have managed to play for free for years that way.

The economy's the main thing holding me back - I'm the type of person that prefers to brew and playtest with all the cards possible for a format. If I wanted a difficult time of obtaining cards for uneven matches, there are other card games for that (or I could just play Sealed/Draft).
Some of my friends enjoy it a lot, but I think they're more in the target audience as they are streamers.

I'm inside the beta and I'm loving it! The economy could be better but I don't care, I just want to play Magic games even if my decks aren't perfectly optimized. A disenchant option would be nice to get rid of utterly useless cards... I can't wait for them to add more old and new sets like Kaladesh or Dominaria!

My fave way to play is limited and with the economy the way it is it plays like a limited league almost. Which is fine at least for now. I’m having fun. Don’t know if that can stay long term though as eventually I’d want to brew. I could easily use it to play just draft and sealed though.

Yeah, it's definitely geared more towards quick/limited matches in general IMO. I'm very curious to see how Brawl will play out in tandem with those limitations, too - seems like a lot of arbitrary cards could find their way into Brawl decks that wouldn't make the cut in even EDH for generating too little advantage.

I just got my key and played a few games tonight. Really like it. Earning in-game currency to buy packs and getting cards from doing challenges is how virtual card games should be. I like that I can pull those wild cards from packs and then exchange them for any one card of a matching rarity. I hope that there is NEVER a marketplace between players; instead, have trading between players and cashing cards in for in-game currency (one set value based on rarity, not the card itself). Also, selling singles that rotate and go on sales.
The only other thing I can think of to ask for would be a single player mode. Have us face AI in Vanguard/Archenemy/Planechase/Explorers of Ixalan style games where we can earn exclusive artwork cards, in-game currency, and packs/cards. If they came out with a free single player campaign and then released additional ones for a couple of bucks (like what they do with the Elder Scrolls card game on Steam), that's where my money would go to; not buying virtual cards with real money, but buying new game modes. That shit would be AMAZING!

So, basically you want to play Hearthstone.

So it really depends on what this is supposed to be to players and who they are gearing towards. I have used MTGO to playtest a TON. MTG Arena is great for a casual experience but the way the economy is it is horrible for any type of competitive play or playtesting. This is because you can't really switch decks. It can take weeks/months to build one deck as you want cause you have to collect wildcards which is a really slow way to build a specific deck (unless it is budget lol). I have opened like six mythics that I will never use and I can't do anything with since there is no planned trading or a way to dust singles (unless you already have a playset). This can be frustrating if you want to build a specific deck and have to pretty much rely on randomness to get your cards. If you want to playtest a deck it can take weeks to build and then if you want to playtest a new deck another few weeks/months. So from that sense the economy doesn't work. I would like to see some type of either marketplace or way to trade in cards you don't need. This doesn't mean we have to get into the world of a full economy. Wildcards will always keep things pretty even. If a card ever did become valuable the wildcards would all be used for that card.
Why play against the AI? I have been in beta and have never waited more then like 7 seconds to get paired for a game. Human players are much better than AI.
One thing I will say is I can't stand the hand placement. Why do they hide your cards? And it is really difficult to select a specific card if you have multiple cards in hand or that can be activated from the grave (since they come up next to your hand). They need to devote more space to showing your hand. Hiding it is annoying. But that is going in my feedback for the beta lol.

Never played that and never will. Blizzard royally fucked over the WoW TCG community by letting it die a slow death and then pushing players to reinvest in their new game. Fuck that, that whole company can rot in Hell for all I care. What I'm saying I don't want MTG Arena to turn into is MTGO. I want this to stay casual and fast paced with the only way to get cards in game to be: spending real money to buy packs, or playing matches/single player and collecting in-game currency/cards. Look at the Elder Scrolls card game and Duel of Champions. THOSE are the standards that EVERY virtual TCG going toward should follow. ~Zuty

I played wow tcg at the national level and was pissed when they killed it off. I remember that cryptazoic screwwed them back by reprinting every loot card in the tcg 7 year run and flooding the market with them.
