I have been working on a concept for a 'Beyond Legendary' status for cards. Cards that have an epic feel and scope. Originally, I designed these for artifacts called Relics. Relic is a new subtype for artifacts that use this new card template. The problem is, I am torn on how to implement the concept and as to what Relics might do. So I'll throw my first one out there for you and explain where I was going with the idea:
Tainted Lotus was an attempt to bring an incredibly powerful card of Magic the Gathering mastery back into the fold. With this, I imagined relics as incredibly rare and extremely limited, so much so that any deck may only have one in it. Not one copy of this card, one copy of any relic, period.
As you can see the card uses a new legendary template. The bottom edges are 'rusted' to show it's age, as if it was a rare artifact sifted from the dust of time. Decorative scrolls flourish the side of the text boxes. Along the edge of the card, ancient runes are carved into the borders but are now worn down and only subtly appear. All this leads up to the top, a bright purplish hue, as if even as old as it is it still resonates energy.
Then I thought that this relic style, while extremely fun and thematic, might restrict itself too much. So I decided to try out my next card.
The Scepter uses this same Relic style template, but it's effects are different. No longer restricted to one card, I got the idea that relics could play off of other relics. This one in particular gives you a win condition based on the amount of relics you control. Players would be playing their own mini Indiana Jones movie each game, searching their decks for these lost items trying to boost their power. I found this to be my least favorite of the bunch, because it really interacts with cards no differently than any other tribal type effect, just for artifacts. A tad boring in my opinion.
So I went back to the drawing board and figured, even though I began this project with artifacts in mind, why should I restrict myself to that. So I tried out other types of spells:
Not to pat my own back too much, but I thought that the card effects look nice and really pop, giving it that extra layer of detail that says, 'I'm an important card'. With other types of cards, I could not think of a good differenciateing mechanic so I merely threw a legendary world enchantment on it to get a feel for the card.
Any ideas, comments, or things you like about this? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. What would make these types of cards 'special' and 'unique'?
