'Pataphysical Being ::CW:: Creature--Elemental Construct Trample As ‘Pataphysical Being enters the battlefield, choose an in-game numerical value. (A player’s life total, the number of permanents on the battlefield, the total number of cards in each players’ hands, the number of cards in a player’s library, the number of cards in a player’s graveyard, the total number of cards in each players’ sideboard, the number of artifacts a player controls, the greatest mana value among cards and permanents in all public zones, greatest power and/or toughness among all creatures on the battlefield, etc. are all in-game numerical values.)
‘Pataphysical Being’s power and toughness are each equal to the chosen value. */* Note this this is NOT an artifact! It's just that construct is a perfect creature type for something based on a formulation of the mind.

Designed in my sleep: Ward Warden Creature--Sliver Wizard Cleric Flash All permanents have ward . Whenever an opponent of a permanent’s controller pays a ward cost of that permanent, that permanent’s controller may pay that ward cost. If they do, reset that ward ability. 2/3 This one was just too stupid not to do: Vamp-Pyre Sorcery This spell deals X damage to each Vampire creature and each Soren planeswalker. If a permanent dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead. If X is 5 or greater, this spell can’t be countered, damage can’t be prevented or redirected this turn, and each Vampire permanent and each Soren planeswalker loses indestructible until end of turn and can’t have or gain indestructible until end of turn.

Noggle Shock Troopers Creature--Noggle Soldier Flying, haste Whenever Noggle Shock Troopers deals damage to a player or planeswalker, you may pay , where X is that much damage. If you don’t, sacrifice Noggle Shock Troopers. 4/3 Paging Mike Flores. Also, these Noggles aren't necessarily from Shadowmoor.

Chronofeeder Creature--Vampire Horror Whenever Chronofeeder deals damage to a permanent, put that many time counters on that permanent. If that permanent doesn’t have vanishing, it gains vanishing. Whenever the last time counter is removed from a permanent, put a +1/+1 counter on Chronofeeder. : Chronofeeder gets -1/+1 until end of turn. 3/4

Wall of Reflected Force Creature--Elemental Wall Reach, defender Blocked creatures deal their combat damage to themselves instead. 0/6 An 8-mana discard spell? It's more likely than you think: Traumatic Brain Injury Sorcery This spell costs less to cast for each card in the targeted player’s hand. Target player reveals their hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card, then loses X life, where X is 7 minus the number of cards in that player’s hand.

Tlaiquetzalli, Impossible Megatyrant Legendary Creature--Giant Dinosaur God Indestructible, vigilance, haste, trample When Tlaiquetzalli, Impossible Megatyrant enters the battlefield, discover X, where X is 3 plus the amount of mana spent to cast Tlaiquetzalli. (Exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card with mana value X or less. Cast it without paying its mana cost or put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom in a random order.) Paradox—Tlaiquetzalli can’t attack or block unless you’ve cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand this turn. , Discard a card: Exile the top two cards of your library. You may play them this turn. You may put a land card you own from your hand or from exile onto the battlefield tapped. 6/6

So, playing against Vodalian Hexcatcher, I was wondering why there isn't an anticreature variant. An idea for a creature that makes creatures fight creature spells, where if the creature permanent wins the fight, the creature spell is countered, popped into my head immediately, and from there, I added on a couple of functionalities: Xenostamaton Creature--Beast Wizard Vigilance, reach : Target creature you control fights target creature spell or planeswalker spell you don’t control. If the creature you control wins the fight, counter that spell. (The creature you control deals damage equal to its power to that spell, and that spell deals damage to the creature you control equal to its printed power if it’s a creature spell or its printed starting loyalty if it’s a planeswalker spell. Creatures whose spells were dealt damage this way enter the battlefield with that damage marked on them and planeswalkers whose spells were dealt damage this way enter the battlefield with that many fewer loyalty counters on them.)
: Target creature you control fights target creature or planeswalker you don’t control. (Planeswalker permanents fight using their current loyalty.)4/5 I like to picture this thing commanding a hyuge, hulking fatty to charge at the swirling portal that is the summoning spell, and that fatty crashing through the portal, destroying the spell. Think of the rhinos in Black Panther.

Partially based on the new card of the week contest asking us to imagine a future version of a plane. It made the possibility of Ravnica just continuing to have a new guildpact every other week to the point it just becomes a mundane job you get your turn in.

As soon as I came up with the name, I knew exactly what art to use; luckily I'd had it saved for literally years: Non Sequitur Instant Counter target spell or ability that doesn’t target you or a spell, ability, permanent, or player you control. -------------------------------------- Did you know that the difference between the Earth’s aphelion and perihelion is less than the Earth’s perigee? This next one isn't Acorn, and has a MUCH more convoluted inspiration. I was watching The Spiffing Brit, and at 1:57:05, he responded to a comment in chat by Pyroglyph. That's a sick-ass name for a Magic card, and my brain immediately came up with a riff on Grave Peril: Pyroglyph Enchantment--Glyph Flash Whenever a creature enters the battlefield or attacks you or a planeswalker you control, you may sacrifice Pyroglyph. If you do, Pyroglyph deals 4 damage to that creature.

Royal ChamberTribal Land--Sliver Nest You begin the game with Royal Chamber in your opening hand. : Add one mana of any color if Royal Chamber entered the battlefield under your control this turn. Otherwise, add . This would show up in Hive, set 1 of 4 of my all-Sliver block. "But what about mulligans?" you may ask. I contend that running the full 4 of these would make mulligans so much less frequent, because manascrew would have so much less chance of happening. We'll also be reprinting Gemhide Sliver, just so you know. I'm sorry, was that buryingdestroying and turning off regeneration of the lede?

Good, Fast, or Cheap Instant Choose one— • Good & fast—You may cast a creature spell from your hand as though it had flash this turn by paying double its mana cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield with a haste counter and a double strike counter on it. • Good & cheap—You may cast a creature spell from your hand as though it had flash this turn by paying instead of paying its mana cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield tapped with three stun counters on it. For as long as it’s tapped with one or more stun counters on it, it has no abilities and can’t be untapped. • Fast & cheap—You may cast a creature spell from your hand as though it had flash this turn by paying instead of paying its mana cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield as a 1/1 with a haste counter and a double strike counter on it and no other abilities. I was reading the flavor text of Arms Race, and thinking of the old saying ("Good, fast, or cheap. Pick two.") when this popped into my head. My original idea was a modal spell with "Choose two", but as you can see, there'd be no way to have that match up with what I wanted, especially since the lowered alternate cost would come at the end, after the ability that allowed you to cast the creature spell at instant speed. Not to mention the additional effects that you'd have to contend with by omitting the third option.

This got me thinking about how to properly black-border Far Out while minimizing the headaches it supposedly incurs. Conqueror's Creed Enchantment Whenever you choose a mode for a spell for the first time each turn, you may a cast a copy of that spell. (You make new choices and targets for the casted copy.)"I had rather excel others in the knowledge of what is excellent, than in the extent of my power and dominion." - Alexander the Great"Cast a copy" is a bit of a sketchy abuse of wording based on Tibalt the Chaotic (and Garth One-Eye to a lesser extent) that flies in the face of how people are probably used to just copying a spell (and thus having locked-in choices) but I think this technically works and minimizes any code nightmare shenanigans something like MTGO might have. Also, I'm not really sure if this effect is to begin with, but since Far Out is the only evidence we have of this effect, I kept in as such.

So instead of falling asleep, like I should be, my brain forced me to make this, inspired by my Sybil, Indentured Repository: Aliona, Vessel of Purgatory Legendary Creature--Human Avatar Cleric Vigilance Spells you control, abilities you control, and costs you pay can’t cause you to sacrifice Aliona, Vessel of Purgatory. Whenever a spell or ability an opponent controls causes Aliona to leave the battlefield, you create three 5/5 white Angel creature tokens with flying, vigilance, and “When this leaves the battlefield, create three 10/10 black Demon Horror creature tokens with flying, lifelink, and haste.” The same is true if Aliona left the battlefield after being dealt damage this turn by a source controlled by an opponent. 3/6

This was inspired by how cold it is in my house right now: The Dead of Winter Legendary Snow Creature--Zombie Trample over nonsnow creatures and planeswalkers, hexproof from nonsnow The Dead of Winter’s power and toughness are each equal to the number of snow permanents you control plus the number of snow cards in your graveyard. Inspired by Benthic Criminologists: Jodril the Curious Legendary Creature--Vedalken Detective Vigilance, trample, curiosity (Whenever this permanent deals damage to a player, planeswalker, or battle, you may draw a card.)
When Jodril the Curious enters the battlefield, investigate. Whenever you sacrifice a Clue, if you didn’t activate any of that Clue’s abilities that aren’t mana abilities this turn, draw a card. Whenever a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability causes you to draw one or more cards, put that many +1/+1 counters on Jodril the Curious. , Sacrifice an artifact: Investigate, then draw a card. 1/2

So, this idea started off with the flavor text, just before I woke up: The Eternal Hunger Legendary Creature--Elder Vampire Noble Your starting deck and sideboard can’t contain any other Vampire cards. Flying, first strike, vigilance, lifelink, haste, trample As long as you’ve cast The Eternal Hunger and it entered the battlefield under your control this game, all of its abilities work in all zones. Counters remain on The Eternal Hunger as it moves to any zone. At the beginning of each end step, sacrifice a creature. If another creature was sacrificed this way, put two +1/+1 counters on The Eternal Hunger. Then if The Eternal Hunger isn’t on the battlefield, return it to the battlefield tapped. , Remove twice X +1/+1 counters from The Eternal Hunger: Exile target creature with toughness of X or planeswalker with X loyalty counters on it. You gain X life and put X +1/+1 counters on The Eternal Hunger. Activate this ability only once per turn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "My life is eternal, all other lives are ephemeral."5/5

So, I was thinking about how Innistad: Midnight Hunt was touted as the "Werewolf set", yet Zombies were the dominant force in Limited; even just this 1 card could’ve changed that: Avabuck Homesteader Creature--Human Werewolf Flash Avabruck Homesteader enters the battlefield tapped. : Add . Daybound (If a player casts no spells during their own turn, it becomes night next turn.)1/2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Avabruck TerrorCreature--Werewolf , : Add three mana in any combination of types. Nightbound (If a player casts at least two spells during their own turn, it becomes day next turn.)2/3 Just thought of this one: Temporary Bonds Instant Search your library for up to three basic land cards, put them onto the battlefield untapped, then shuffle. At the beginning of the next end step, shuffle those cards into your library.

I decided to play around with that joke a bit and ended up with what I think actually kind of works as a black border design: Curse of Warped Flow Enchantment - Aura Curse Flash Enchant player Whenever enchanted player casts a spell, counter that spell unless that player pays , then put a warp counter on ~. When ~ has two or more warp counters on it, sacrifice it. "Good magic is all about interrupting the procedure to see the real tricks." - The MagicianStill trying to mess with this cycle of "uncanny future Magic" (Magic 2099? Magic as played by corrupt Time Lords? etc...) a bit. Not going to make a full set or anything (plus I still need to go back and finish that what-if Urabrask starter deck...) but it might make good reference material for a certain less serious column on this forum. - The Commander (Doctor Who already has a General and a Brigadier...) - The Magician - ? ? ? - The Broker - ? ? ? Another odd idea I had while I was at it: Paradox Swindle Sorcery Draw three cards. Discard three cards at the beginning of the next end step. At the beginning of your next upkeep, pay . If you don’t, you lose the game. "I recommend investing in yourself, with interest." - The BrokerPushed Ideas Unbound with a Harmonize tax. Probably extremely broken even with the attempt to kneecap Ancestral Recall, but this is all a bunch of rough unpolished ideas anyway.
