Just had an idea for a possible mechanic, and I wondered if it's silver or black border:
Tap an untapped card in your hand: Foo. Tapped cards in hand can't be played. I'm gonna make the call here and say silver.

Because FUCK CONTROL DECKS, THAT'S WHY!!! Also, U.S. politics is trash.
Curse of Tuition Enchantment--Aura Curse Enchant player Flash Whenever enchanted player would draw a card, that player may pay . If they don’t, they skip that draw.

A, perhaps ridiculous, commander I thought up. Needs some Red or Green in there. Something like... Repio, Wild Replimancer - Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Instant or sorcery spells cost more to cast. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, exile it then copy it X times, where X is the number of colors of mana spent to cast that spell. You may choose new targets for the copies. 0/2

This seems... worse? I would hate to pay three blue for an opt. What about this: Repio of The Many Realities Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may pay . For each mana of a different color spent in this way, create a copy of that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy. : Exile the top three cards of your library. you may cast instant or sorcery spells exiled in this way. 0/2

Inspired by Exuberant Firestoker:
Ixalan Godtoucher Creature--Human Shaman Dinosaur spells you cast cost less to cast. Creature spells you cast with power 5 or greater cost less to cast. : Add one mana of any color. 2/2

It's a constraint on how you hold the cards in your hand so it cannot be black-bordered for sure.
EDIT: I'm speaking about the tapped cards in hand thing on the previous page.

arthurxiv : I kinda figured. Ok, so silver-bordered it is.
This would require the addition of a new rule: "Tapped cards in hand can't be played.", but I believe there's enough untapped (heh) design space here to be worth it.
Essence Extractor Snow Creature--Eldrazi Bird Devoid (This card has no color.) As an additional cost to cast this spell, tap three untapped cards in your hand. Flying : Add one mana of any type. Tap an untapped card in your hand: Add one mana of any type. 1/2
You could also "freeze" (tap, doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step) cards in your opponents' hands, either having them choose which, or you choose which, or do it to random cards there.
Also, you could do a Maro that gets an additional +1/+1 for each tapped card in your hand.
Just think of all the additional things that can be done when going from a binary (either there's cards in hand {1}, or there aren't {0}) to a trinary (no card in hand {0}, card in hand {1}, tapped card in hand {2}) system.

That flavor text tho. Fantastic. melono : Seconded! Be honest, though: you came up with the flavor text first, right? Nope. I came up with that when searching for 1 cmc blue instants and sorceries on scryfall. There are so many simple one-word cards there, it would be a shame if I hadn't made a flavortext with them.

Started off as one thing, added a bunch of things, then split it into two things. Rather a lot like cell division.
Niadagi Who Crawls Legendary Creature--Wurm Wizard Partner with Arsi Who Frees Niadagi Who Crawls can’t be blocked by creatures with lesser power or toughness. Whenever a player draws a card, you create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token. 5/6
Arsi Who Frees Legendary Creature--Worm Wizard Partner with Niadagi Who Crawls , Sacrifice a creature: Add an amount of equal to the sacrificed creature’s toughness plus 1. , Sacrifice a creature: You gain life equal to the sacrificed creature’s toughness plus 3. , Sacrifice a creature: You draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature’s toughness. , Sacrifice a creature: Each opponent loses life equal to the sacrificed creature’s toughness plus 1. , Sacrifice a creature: Arsi Who Frees deals damage to target creature or planeswalker equal to the sacrifice creature’s toughness. , Sacrifice a creature: Creatures you control get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the sacrificed creature’s toughness. 2/3

Hey folks! Are you all ready to burn? Tzadema, Friend to Fires - Legendary Creature - Elemental Shaman First strike, haste If a red source you control would deal 1 damage to a creature, it deals 5 damage to that creature instead. "Inside every spark is a bonfire waiting to burst forth."1/3

An idea I had Identity Displacement Sorcery Exile target creature. That creature's controller may search their library for a card with the same name as that creature and put it onto the battlefield. If they do, they shuffle their library.

sdfkjgh I looooooove Ixalan Godtoucher. Wayward Swordtooth for ONE MANA! I'm definitely going to attempt to put this card into MTG Forge at some point.
Anyway, there's this. I want a Spirit lord in Esper, dammit. It seems, fine? Maybe not amazing, but definitely playable. I think? I think.

Tired: Flame Jab
I think this phrasing is acceptable and I do not care if it's not. I'm way more interested in making cards that people sitting at tables can figure out intuitively than cards that fit nicely within the existing landscape of rules text.

Flame Jab, Ashmouth Hound, Chainwhirler... I see no problem with this . (It'd probably be more balanced if it just made it 3 damage, but eh. Go big or go home.) --- Based off a conversation I had on another forum... Jhoira, But With Less Absurd Combo Potential - Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Whenever you cast a spell from your hand, you may pay less. X can't be 0. If you do, exile that spell with X time counters on it, and it gains suspend. 2/2 So Worldfire is Suspend 6 - instead of Suspend 4 - . It'd be way more powerful and comboriffic if I dropped the "from your hand" restriction, but look at the damn name.EDIT: Speaking of absurdities... Veil-Worn Shaya - Legendary Creature - Spirit Cleric Flying, lifelink Spells and abilities you control cannot reduce your life total ( You still lose life if you pay life.) 2/3

Not sure if this is the best thread, but I wanted some feedback on a potential set mechanic (that I may also be posting to the COTW contest). The idea is to take Food/Treasure predefined tokens into an adjacent design space. Hence, the token: An example card with the mechanic would look like this: Similar to how Food was primarily in Black/Green, I think Inspiration flavorfully & mechanically fits Blue/White as its primary colors. I have some pros and cons I've thought of and want any advice on how to alter the mechanic: Pros
- As it stands, all colors have access to +1/+1 & scry 1, so this could be a diverse mechanic
- Leads to choices (do I need to focus on combat or on card fixing?)
- Useful in multiple archetypes (beatdown or control), which could lead to a more diverse limited
Cons
- More rules text required than Treasure or Rules token + requires a bit of wierd wording (instead of "create" has to be "create and attach")
- Only works if you have some creatures (so instants/sorceries with "create inspiration token" would feel a bit bad to draw if you had no creatures)
- Not particularly powerful effect (could be stronger with Scry 2 but that would mostly keep it out of Green/Red)
- Like Food, could easily be too parasitic
Any thoughts by anyone else?

kilenc: Equipment tokens that only give +1/+1 were already tried by Ethan Fleischer and shot down in GDS2 for being too similar to +1/+1 counters without really adding much to the game. Making the tokens saccable for a scry effect adds far too much complication and memory issues to a concept that's already bogged down by such problems.

Making the tokens saccable for a scry effect adds far too much complication and memory issues to a concept that's already bogged down by such problems. Actually, I would say the reverse. The addition of the scry effect (along with all the mechanics associated with being a permanent type) adds a fundamental difference to +1/+1 counters that justifies them. As to complexity, I don't think there's a case to be made there, either. The various forms of artifact token already used establish a precedent for named tokens having sacrifice effects. Scry 1 is a mild enough effect compared to what other tokens can do as to justify the secondary +1/+1 effect, and it should be easy enough to remember the +1/+1 by virtue of the fact that it is a token attached to a creature. Meanwhile, it's not like far more complicated tokens weren't used at a time when cards for tokens weren't even a thing...and I don't just mean in ABU days.

Kilenc, have you considered what boardstate might look like with these in a printed format? The stacking of so many cards on top of each other seems like it would get very cluttered.
I think there is a way to do what you want, but much simpler and with more design space.
What if it was some sort of cost?
Ability X: Foo. (to Ability, pay X and remove +1/+1 counters from this creature/a creature you control.)
You could even extend this to any counters and any permanents, which opens up a lot of interesting design space. But I think the above fits what you want while lowering the complexity and making it easier to understand.

Reading up on the design for Ixalan got me thinking of how I'd handle their Location concept. I wasn't really happy with them being enchantments, but lands are typically too narrow for interesting effects. What I've come up with so far is a strange hybrid of land and enchantment. I'm not exactly happy with it, but I think I can at least get feedback on the basic concept with the prototype I whipped up. After giving it some consideration, I decided that something that was missing was the ability to get mana (to cement the Locations as lands) and decided that they should have basic land types when discovered. So, "Island Location", "Forest Location", "Mountain Location", etc... and adjusted my concept on what things should cost for the fact that you're not permanently binding one mana into the effect.

Honestly not a huge fan of the whole "Morph, but as a Wastes" thing - if you put it on anything other than a land card, you're effectively denying yourself a land drop in the long run. Also, you're missing a lot of the stuff that makes Morph work as a mechanic (creatures are much easier to interact with than lands, and your opponent has the additional pressure of not knowing what your bear will turn into if they try to bolt it), so... I don't see the full justification for making it a morph-equivalent?
|
|
|
Post by kefke on Dec 16, 2019 4:33:00 GMT
Lady Mapi It's actually not intended as a morph-equivalent. Mechanically, that's what it is, but functionally speaking it's more a matter of getting around the "lands don't have casting costs" limitation.
