sdfkjgh Hehe thanks, and you know what is always said, what matters more is the inside- which in this case might be a kitten, a Porcuparrot, and/or a Vupikeet. And then it would even become prettier as well!

*Checks date of this Challenge's posting* July 25th? WOW. Ok, I may have forgotten about this one...
Judging now.
viriss: There's already Essence Symbiote, Vulpikeet, Glowstone Recluse, Mysterious Egg, and I'm sure I'm missing at least one other, so the fact that you can still manage to eke out a bit of a difference in such a crowded field of similar/exact same abilities deserves kudos. However, there's not much innovation beyond that slight difference, which won't actually matter ~89% of the time, and I'm speaking from experience. Mutate is more of a go-tall mechanic than a go-wide one, so the target is most likely going to be itself. I do love the idea of a Faerie Crab, though.
gamma3: As Flo00 pointed out, Pollywog Symbiote does everything your card does, and more, and better. Try harder next time.
PEacefulOtter: Similar to viriss' entry, yours just doesn't do enough different from what's already out there. Plus, your mutate cost seems a little too high for so little an effect, just look at Vulpikeet and Majestic Auricorn (who just yesterday I realized has John Woo birds, and they're entirely appropriate, as this card's saved my life in many a game).
Flo00: Now, THIS is more like it! I have no idea what I'm gonna do once Paradise Druid rotates out. Prolly build a shrine, watered with my tears. Mutate creatures NEED this sort of protection & early-game play, and I'm still wondering why Auras decks haven't adopted them into their loving arms.
Boogymanjunior: See my above comment.
In ascending order:
gamma3, way, way at the back. viriss, two lengths ahead. PEacefulOtter, ahead by a half. And, in a photo finish, It's boogy & Flo, tied for first! You both offered much-needed protection for the precious mutators, and while I'm a little upset that no one thought to use indestructible, I'm also cognizant enough to realize that no strategy should have zero weaknesses (looking at you, control...).
Congratulations to the co-winners, and I'm mostly sorry I forgot about this. I guess it worked out, because Boogymanjunior turned in a real beaut.

sdfkjgh Thanks for the co-win and the kind words! I don't want to postpone the challenge too long, but Flo00 do you want to take my half of the mantle and be the one who pushes the next round? If you don't want to (or I feel like others begin to stomp their feet in the background) I could take over as well.

Thanks Boogymanjunior, I'll do it. Having just read this week's MaRo article, the next set is Future SightI'd really like to see some cards that could have been future shifted.

There used to be a lot of cards that would destroy the creature blocking or blocked by them after combat, regardless of damage dealt. Oftentimes with specification on which kinds of creatures would be affected. Future Sight introduced Deathtouch, which ultimately replaced these abilities. ...but what if R&D had gone in a slightly different direction? Well, somewhere is an alternate future where they did. Bane is a keyword that destroys any creatures blocking or blocked by the bane creature after combat, whether they took damage or not. Like the abilities it replicates, it includes a condition for what kinds of creatures it affects. Meaning that you could errata the old cards to use Bane, which Deathtouch was unable to do. For example, Abomination would have "Bane of green and white.", Thicket Basilisk and Cockatrice would have "Bane of non-Wall creatures", etc...

Compleated Martial Artist Creature--Monk Infect (This creature deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters and to players in the form of poison counters.) Prowess (Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.) --------------------------------------- With the simultaneous compleation of Ojutai in the present, Shu Yun in the past, and Narset in the alternate timeline, the full annexation of Tarkir was declared a resounding success. 0/2
This one is more towards possible alternate futures. I like to imagine what would happen should the Phyrexians ever manage a multiversal invasion.

I'm sorry. Somehow I keep missing my judging deadlines. {kefke}I like Bane and how versatile it is. That's a really good explanation of things you gave there. I ghuess you could also do the reverse thing to "hexproof from" and just give a creature Bane (aka Bane of creatures). Also having a white Assassin is a very Future Sight-y thing. The only (really minor) complaint I have is that there are no vampires in Future Sight (and only three total in the whole block). {sdfkjgh}That's an interesting one. I really like the unusual combination of keywords that make a great card. Giving it 0 power is also very clever. Has actually more of a modern Planar Chaos feeling. (Planar Chaos was about alternate realities.)
{Boogymanjunior}A simple card featuring investigate. What I like here is that this somehow shows that back in future Sight this would have been a pretty mind blowing concept. And nowadays it seems to be just a very nromal thing to do. I think this could be an . {winner} kefke for an innovative concept with a very Future Sightesque feeling

Lady Mapi: Shitposting on the Sevens! Ral: Oh, man. I'd tap that! Oh, please. Even if, against all probability of all possible multiverses, you actually managed to get your hands on it, you of all people wouldn't know what to do with it!What are you two talking about? Ral: Take a good, hard, look... I'm not sure what you're insinuating with such a lascivious tone, but-- *looks* Ohsweetmysteryoflife, atlasti'vefoundyou. I'm in love. I'm sorry, Thea, my former love of today, I don't think it could ever work out between us. You're a pinnacle of awesome hotness, and I'm, well-- Ral: A fat, aging, troglodyte with delusions of adequacy, on the cusp of giving up on your, let's face it, not-actively-pursued dreams, in favor of just dying alone in obscurity? Hey, there's no need for such harsh accuracy! What were we talking about, again? That.Oh. Right. DAY-um! I'd tap that ssoo. haard! No, Senpai, no! Don't objectify--*Jund grabs Mel's head, turns it* Holy. Fuck. I'd tap that so hard, we'd both be exerted for the next three turns!!!Ok, that's hot! Mebbe not so much a prediction, more like a card I desperately want:
Mage of Abundant Renewal Creature--Elf Shaman Wizard Landfall—Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may choose land or nonland and reveal the top four cards of your library. Put a card of the chosen type into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. : Put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield. 2/3
The first ability was originally gonna be a straight up, word-for-word duplication of Abundance, except for the landfall trigger tweak, but then I realized that mebbe there needed to be a limitation to that. Or mebbe it was my sleep-deprived brain sabotaging the concept by thinking that it put the lands directly onto the battlefield. Idk.

Grave of the Titans Artifact Colorless spells cost more to cast. If a card with converted mana cost 6 or more would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead. A siideboard card that can be used against a number of decks in different formats. Mostly tron I guess...

Magma Fissure Sorcery Destroy target nonbasic land. Magma Fissure deals 2 damage to that land's controller. //MDFC// Fiery CrevasseLand - Mountain (: Add )Fiery Crevasse enters the battlefield tapped. Not so much a prediction as a belief that the rare cycle of spell MDFC's could have had basic types, since they're the back face. This means that even if they had basic land types, you couldn't fetch them, so it only matters for cards that check for the types on the battlefield.

Time for judgement! viriss - Props for working from an existing spoiler. The first thing that stands out to me on this card is the name. With the definite article "The", it sounds like it should be a legendary. At least, going by name alone. The effect is a little tricky to judge, but in the right deck could be devastating, especially with multiples in play. Don't get me wrong, it's a clever design. I'm just not sure where the ability to give out +2/+2 to your whole board over time, along with making sure new creatures come in with haste, really falls, though my gut feeling is that an official card would make you pay something on top of tapping, even at CMC 5. Again, multiples in play would see this going from "tap to give target creature permanent +2/+2" to as high as +8/+8, and able to do it to more creatures per turn as the effect got stronger. Which means that with it not being legendary, each one you put on the board is a much better payoff for its cost than the last, when the first one's already got some really good value. Also, while I'm reasonably sure that multiple instances of haste shouldn't tick an additional +2/+2 from the effect, it's bound to cause confusion. Reminder text would have helped to clear that up. sdfkjgh - Abundance can be a pretty strong effect, so even though creatures are usually easier to get rid of, I think going with a more limited version for your Abundance-with-legs was the right call, even at the same mana cost. Especially since this effect doesn't replace normal card draws, and the card's second ability gives you a potential extra land drop (which in turn means an extra filtered draw) each turn, and potentially more later on since it doesn't need to tap to do it. Also, since you get to choose a card of the chosen type from the top four, rather than just getting the first one, it's a bit more powerful in that regard too (though only choosing from the top four mitigates this somewhat). All in all, I don't think this is an overpowered card, but it is deceptively strong at what it does. Card advantage is something Green struggles with, and this offers power in draw, ramp, and filtering. If it were official, I can see it easily becoming a staple in a lot of Green decks. ameisenmeister - This is a really interesting card, because it would have been much more valuable in older sets, back when land destruction was more common. Typically, it's harder to get lands in the graveyard these days, with some exceptions...one of which is notable enough to go into more detail in a bit, here. Obviously, the ideal way to play this is to kick it with a land, so that you can get the counter, and negate the cost when it attacks. On the one hand, that means that any time you have a spare land in your hand it's an undercosted 3/4 that nets you an extra land on your next turn. On the other hand, you won't always have a land to do that by the time you have sources for three mana down, so that combo is more rewarding you for good hand luck. However, of note is that Landfall is confirmed for Zendikar Rising, and this pairs well with it. Possibly too well, though. There's a reason why WotC tries to stay away from repeatable graveyard recursion, and a card like this doesn't have much incentive not to take advantage of its trigger - especially if it was kicked, it's a solid choice for an attacker, and there's no other cost - so it can easily be paired with sac-lands to make certain that Landfall abilities go off every turn, if not more than once, on top of whatever the sac-lands can do. The ultimate example of this would be when it's paired with fetch lands, where it could guarantee each landfall trigger going off 2 times per turn, not counting normal land drops or other effects, for quite a few turns. Flo00 - I actually like this. The Colorless-hosing is thematically appropriate, given Zendikar's history, and the same can be said for the "big-hosing" side of it as well. There's nothing particularly powerful about this in most cases, but as you say, it would make a decent sideboard card against a variety of different decks. I'd say that its mana cost seems even a little steep with the narrowness of its effects, but for both being packed onto one card, it's probably at least still in the playable range. Also, you reminded me that Titansgrave was a thing. gamma3 - I get where you're coming from with this. All the MDFC lands we've seen so far are essentially the same thing as a basic land. On the spell side of this, it seems pretty balanced, even taking into account that WotC doesn't do as much land destruction as they used to. Obviously, the other side is just a basic Mountain that enters tapped...which I'm glad you did. It's clear that WotC are trying to make the Spell/Land hybrids less valuable on the Land side than single-faced, and that's certainly because otherwise there would be no value to using normal lands. I think the key to judging this card, though, is going to be to ask why did WotC leave off basic land types from the MDFC lands? Unfortunately, I can think of some good reasons. If a card has basic land types, then it's affected by cards that interact with those types. I'll leave aside the need to create rules for any potential confusion that might cause, but let's assume that those cards just are their types. If an MDFC is a basic land type, first of all that's just inherently stronger than a non-typed card with the same effect for various purposes (because there are effects that care about basic land typed cards you control), and WotC clearly wanted to make regular basic lands still have value over their MDFC counterparts. Secondly, they may have wanted to set a precedent. Right now, all MDFC lands have the land on the back face, which means (according to the Comprehensive Rules) that it has no land traits until played as a land. Suppose they made one where the Land side was the front, though? Worst case, you choose the active side when the card is played, and any effect that puts a basic land type on the battlefield can cast the spell side of a MDFC land for free. Best case, it has to enter play as a land, but effects that put it in your hand can still be used to tutor for the spell side. Now, full disclosure, I admit that's inviting a fringe case on the second point, but the first - that there was a deliberate choice made to limit the value of the land faces so that players would still be incentivised to use basic lands - still stands. So I'd have to say that precedents aside, if a MDFC land were to have a basic land type, it would have to have even more of a drawback than tempo loss, to ensure it's not an easy choice between it and a conventional land. Winner for this contest is Flo00, congratulations!

I think this was one of the first cards I ever designed for/posted images of to the MSE fora, back when it was at sourceforge. I believe it was a Card of the Week contest, with the prompt of H. P. Lovecraft:
The Land Out of Nowhere Legendary Land The Land Out of Nowhere enters the battlefield tapped and doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap step. Whenever The Land Out of Nowhere becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter that spell or ability unless its controller pays . : Add . , : Reveal a card at random from your hand. If that card is a Horror, Demon, Ooze, or Eldrazi permanent card, you may put that card onto the battlefield. Activate this ability only if you have three or more cards in hand. [/s][/p]
EDIT: Flo00 Oh, sonofabi--actually, I can use this clip again.
We come now to our final and most terrifying submission of this Contest. To even gaze upon it is to go mad: {Pans the above card.}
C'mon, man, that's your cue.
Teferi: No. I'm not doing this shit. I have a reputation to uphold. Why did you even ask me? You know I don't go in for these things. Why not have Zarek do it?
Ral: Well, I'm game, sir! Aaiiugh! It's-- *cocks head* Actually, what the hell is this? I'm not even sure of what I'm looking at. Is it even the right way up?
CUT!
Ral: Y'know, mebbe Teferi's right about all this...
Oh, fuck all you guys! I'm just gonna go ahead with the bit. We had a story to go with this submission, but it was far too intense. So we just threw something together with VampiresDemons. Enjoy!
Mindpact Demon Creature--Demon Whenever you draw a card, put a level counter on Mindpact Demon. 1/1 Level 3+: Flying, trample Mindpact Demon gets +1/+1 for each level counter on it. At the beginning of each end step, draw a card and lose 1 life for each level counter on Mindpact Demon. 1/1

Spawngarden Enchantment When Spawngarden enters the battlefield, put a 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature token onto the battlefield. It has, "Sacrifice this creature: Add to your mana pool." Whenever you sacrifice an Eldrazi Spawn for mana, it produces an additional . I decided to go with the old templating for fun. This set came out a bit before I started playing magic (I started right after Scars was released) so this was a fun nostalgia trip.

I was initially worried about the card ramping into itself and resulting in a 6 mana 7/7 the turn it was played which didn't feel right even by modern standards, but you make a good point. I decided to bump up the initial casting cost by 1 and make the P/T 7/7 instead.

Computer issues. For once it's not my fault I missed my own deadline Judging now. {viriss}This is a nice build-around in a vacuum and also a good annihilator hate. Also works with Spawns, just in a weird way since you get mana from sacing them you can't use for the demon. But I guess being able to use the mana would make this way too strong, so it's actually a good thing.
{sdfkjgh}Small note on your original entry: It also was way too wordy for my taste. I would have liked to see some level designs that get level counters from something else than level up. I assume that WotC didn't do that because when they introduce a mechanic, they first do easier things with it and save the more dedicated versions for when they reprint it. Sadly, it get an 8 on the storm scale. Back to Mindpact Demon: I like the overall idea of the card. Since there is only one level, and it gets +1/+1 for each level coutner, this feels like it actually could have been done with +1/+1 counters in a cleaner way. The last line a quite crazy. It draws you potentially a whole lot of cards and also threatens to kill you easily. I admit, that's a very Demonic thing, it just feels a bit too extreme. On the other hand, so does Hellcarver Demon. {mk}That's a very Eldrazi effect and it really fits into the set. I guess the only reason this effect isn't on a real card yet is that playing against annihilator (a.k.a. sacrifice abilities in great numbers) was quite unfun.
{gamma3}A good thematic ramp that works well in the set. I like it.
{ZephyrPhantom}That's an interesting take on the level mechanic. Rise of Eldrazi (sadly) only had level creatures. As I wrote in sdfkjgh's feedback, WotC was probably saving up that design space for a possible reprint of the mechanic. I can totally imagine this in a commander deck or a Horizons set.
this was a fun nostalgia trip. I totally agree. {winner}@mk wins! Second place goes to gamma3
