Welcome to this reboot of an old design game on the old forums. Here, you are invited to create evil, to don the mantle of malice and harm and overwhelming selfishness, to take a jaunt in the shoes of one beholden to none but their own desires. Concoct callous cruelty! Manufact mindless malice! But remember; there is no villain without a hero...
The rules (as slightly altered from the old game) are simple.
- The current judge (in the case of the first challenge yours truly, in the future the winner of the challenge before) creates a villain. - The villain entry must, at minimum, be one legendary creature or planeswalker. - Other legendary cards may share the stage in a collusion of the wicked, but too many villains spoil the scheme (and may result in an unappealing entry for your contestants, or one that's harder to respond to due to narrow flavour).
- You may either write a brief bit of expository text about your heinous specimen or let your cards speak for themselves.
- You may add additional noncreature cards depicting your dastardly blackguard's schemes, power, or horrifying successes, in order to make your flavour more robust. (But sometimes, less is more; let's make sure our heroes have enough freedom of flavour to work with.)
- Each contestant rises to the challenge and attempts to stop the villain's nefarious plan.
- This entry is more freeform than the villain entry; you may either - create a hero to confront the villain (a legendary creature or planeswalker) or make a nonlegendary card to represent beating back the evil some other way. (Perhaps nature itself rises against this offence to all that's good, or the 'peasants' rally their courage? The post window is your canvas.) - The hero entry can combat the villain either mechanically or in terms of flavour; however, it must be based on either of these aspects in some way.
- As with the villain, you don't need to stick to just one card per entry; you can make a heroic co-operation, a hero wielding a specific weapon or power against their foe, or a diverse offence of nonlegendary cards. (But again, do use common sense and discretion in terms of the amount of cards in your entry.) - You may either write a brief bit of expository text about your resurgence of virtue or let your cards speak for themselves.
- Of course, your 'hero' may in fact be a fellow villain, fighting for their own agenda...
- A render isn't required for either entry.
- Once a week has passed, the creator of the villain closes the challenge and judges the challenges they've been presented with in terms of mechanical design and flavour. The winner then goes on to create the new villain, and so the cycle repeats...
And now, to get things started, our first villain makes his entrance...
{Spoiler} "Another challenge? Perfect! My muscles are in need of flex from all that food!"Cestemus the Chosen Legendary Planeswalker - Cestemus : Put a loyalty counter on Cestemus the Chosen for each differently named land you control. : Cestemus deals damage equal to the number of loyalty counters on him to target creature or planeswalker. That permanent deals damage equal to its converted mana cost to Cestemus. : Until end of turn, Cestemus becomes a 4/4 green Human Druid Warrior creature token with trample and indestructible that's still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn. Once a rebel against the Heavensward Order, a sacrificial cult that wreaked societal collapse across the plane, Cestemus was unstoppable in combat by any of its members due to his strong connection with nature's power. The Order, therefore, applied a different tactic; little by little, it took away everything precious in Cestemus' life until his mind shattered from the despair, ready to embrace the Order's teachings of seeking paradise through death. Convinced that he would be free of sorrow, he undertook the Rite of Ascension; but rather than die there and then, his spark ignited, opening the Multiverse to him. Believing this to be the heaven that had been bestowed to him, Cestemus treads the Eternities under the impression that he is the only one who truly exists within them, taking what he pleases and beating any who resist into submission with the bravado of one who believes his sovereignity a matter of fate. Shatter his delusion!

Estnoon, the Furious Legendary Creature - Orc Shaman When Estnoon, the Furious enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices a permanent that doesn’t share a name with any other permanent. Thanks for the win! Your next villain is... "Are you sure this is a good idea, Omund, reading an unmarked tome like this? I thought you always taught us we needed to always know what we were reading!" Omund clears his throat and chuckles. "Why yes, of course. You know what they say - if it wasn't safe, I wouldn't be letting you do it, right?" The oblivious students read from the tome. "We, bearers of the shadow, vessels of our liege, give ourselves to the pentacle bearer, the one who wields the ten pronged-rod, scourge of nightmares, bane of angels, eater of dragons. We give ourselves to-", they began to chant, all too late realizing that their teacher was not the innocent man he claimed to be, as their souls were trapped in the gem of a rod. Omund chuckled maniacally, "Power is mine!", he said as he raised his sceptre in triumph.A voice from behind him. "No, it is mine," the scepter spoke, and Omund was turned to ash in a split second. "Thank you for freeing me. Let me show the world what the true bane of angels looks like..." Deca, Rod of Ancients Legendary Artifact Whenever a creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it. Put a card exiled with CARDNAME in their owner's graveyards: Tap target creature. Put three cards exiled with CARDNAME in their owner's graveyards: Draw a card. Deca currently has three cards exiled with it, allowing it to tap down three creatures. Deca is also an 8/8 God with lifelink and protection from instants. Here's a hero backed by his motley crew, who employ the practical strategy of shooting at very long distances: Wastrel Scourge Planeswalker - Wastrel : You may have ~ deal 2 damage to target tappped creature and 3 damage to you. : Destroy target nonbasic land or artifact. : ~ deals 8 damage to any target. [3] Alanna's Blessing Instant Choose one: - Double the number of +1/+1 counters on target permanent. - Double the number of loyalty counters on target permanent. Akento's Spellbarge Artifact Flash When ~ enters the battlefield, nonland permanents you control gain hexproof and creatures your opponents control lose hexproof until end of turn. : Exile ~, then return it to the battlefield under your control. Spellbarge protects any innocents while Scourge + Blessing wipe Deca one way or another.

Grand Abatement Enchantment When Grand Abatement enters the battlefield, exile all other nonland permanents, then return those cards to the battlefield under their owner’s control. From a nearby window, a young azra clad in armor and brandishing a well-worn blade bursts onto the scene with a battle cry... and lands face-first onto the floor below, tumbling a fair bit across. Undeterred, she swiftly leaps to her feet and points her sword at the rod she's spent a good while searching for, along with the poor soul it's conscripted into its service. "You're up way past your bedtime, you overinflated doorknob!" she proclaims, betraying no fear. "Your delusional entitlement is at its end! I, Septa, will free this world of anyone who would treat it as their own!"
Legendary Creature - Azra Warrior First strike, hexproof from converted mana cost 4 or greater
Whenever Septa Godslayer deals combat damage to a player, destroy target creature with power 4 or greater that player controls. Whenever Septa Godslayer deals combat damage to a planeswalker, destroy that planeswalker. "By my blade, this world will rule its own future!"
3/1
Fool's Fortune Instant Counter target spell or ability that targets you or a permanent you control. Exile the top card of your library. Until the end of your next turn, you may play that card. Unshakable confidence met sheer dumb luck, and in an instant, a hopeless battle became a resounding victory.

Creature spells enchanted player casts cost more to cast. Whenever a creature enchanted player controls with power 4 or greater attacks, you may pay . If you do, that creature deals damage to itself equal to its power. "Hold on, was it 'angels' or 'angles'?"
EDIT - I guess that that doesn't deal with the Mentor alone. Let's give it a companion card.
Rancorous Apprentice Creature - Human Shaman Trample
When Rancorous Apprentice enters the battlefield, it deals 2 damage to up to one target white or blue creature. "You thought me a fool, Omund? You... you weren't wrong. Let that be a small consolation for you in your last moments, for you have taught me much."

EDIT - Last second edit, added 'up to one' to the Apprentice's "enters the battlefield" ability

wip e: only works if NAP is tapped out and can't tap Juson then sac Mentor to destroy him, so will rework. I'll just add hexproof from uncommonee: actually it works if Jahnes is inhand so Deca returns to the field an artifact and you can cast next turn. can't sac same turn though Jahnes, the Curator Legendary Creature- Human Citizen When ~ enters the battlefield, you may gain control of target artifact. , , Sacrifice an artifact: Put target card in your graveyard on top of your library. 1/4 “The core of my career is preservation... along with efficient use of resources.”Trial of Merit Sorcery Each player chooses up to one creature they control. Only the best were granted positions in the new administration.” —Jahnes of the Museum of RelicsEDIT 10/4: change to Trial of Merit, "...chooses a creature they..." to "...chooses up to one creature they..." Meticulous Jahnes keeps careful tabs on all valuable tools that the Museum could seek to seal, exhibit, or put to use- the Rod of Ancients being one such item. Jahnes, and thus the Museum, are willing to go to great lengths to secure the item (and if it happens to save the Empire...).

ZephyrPhantom: I like the consideration of the innocents in your answer and the spellbarge is cool. However, the planeswalker's ult is a bit weak - I think you could make it a little more... fiery or powerful. The solution is quite straightforward, but the rest of the entry makes this a lot less bland than it could've been. viriss: Straightforward answer. I like how you've chosen to approach this in a nonviolent manner. The card itself is cute, but I think it would be better with flash. My one quip is that this does not address the Cursed Mentor swinging at your face to death. fluffydeathbringer: Unless I'm very sleep deprived, I don't necessarily see how Septa wins against Deca? Fool's Fortune does counter any destruction Deca might create, but Septa probably just swings in and dies. Plus, the fact that Deca can tap her down means that Deca mostly races her with lifelink. Cool cards, but I don't quite think they win this one. Neottolemo: Nice enchantment. The cards are pretty cool too, and I like the reference to Omund in the FT. It addresses the villain well too, in a way that's a bit unorthodox. Well done. augur: That's clever. Jahnes enters and targets Deca, either getting it controlled or forcing the mentor to sac from. From there if things don't work, Jahnes can just pop trial to secure Deca. I like this one quite a bit, though I do wonder if three mana is too little for artifact control. Trial is a wonderful design, though. augur wins, with Neo as runner-up.

Thanks! Thought I had based the cost off of precedent but all the precedent says "no, higher cost" so I slipped up at some point. The King, as of late, has been acting erratic.Assemble the Kingsguard Sorcery Create three 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens. , Exile ~ from your graveyard: Permanents you control gain indestructible until end of turn. "Yea, the good ol' King has done some odd stuff before, but he made it clear it was fer the common good, ye know? This time... looks like he's jest straight gone off the deep end."King Dravin, the Ironfist Legendary Creature- Human Hexproof from converted mana cost 1 or less Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, that player can't cast noncreature spells until your next turn. : Creatures you control gain your choice of first strike, lifelink, or vigilance until end of turn. Activate this ability only once each turn. 3/4 ROYAL REPORT The King appears to be rolling dice to decide the markets, as interest rates have been altered for the fifth consecutive day. Banks and investors alike are in...Queen Maria, Demented Geist Legendary Enchantment Creature- Spirit Bestow Deathtouch Enchanted creature gets +1/+3 and has deathtouch. Whenever ~ or enchanted creature attacks, you draw a card and lose 1 life. , Sacrifice enchanted creature: Destroy target creature. 1/3 "Begone," Dravin hisses through clenched teeth. An unseen voice titters. "Oh, not yet, dearest. Not before the kingdom you love has fallen into anarchy." "Witch! I should have had you fed to the demons you worshipped rather than executed!" "Now, is that any way to speak to your wife?" He felt, rather than saw, the pout, the same way he felt the ensuing grin. "I'll join the Great Ones eventually, but not before my business here is done..."Your goal is to rid the country of Maria's influence. Your hero may or may not care about the fate of King Dravin. The opponent currently has: • Four lands in play yes this means maria couldn't have been bestowed, best not to think about it• Three 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens • Queen Maria, an Aura enchantment, attached to King Dravin • Assemble the Kingsguard in their graveyard (you are not necessarily bound by the number of lands in play, but note that they will likely play a land next turn to have 5 mana open) (also note that you have not been hit by Dravin... yet)

If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on it and it doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap step. : Gain control of target creature with three or more counters on it. : You get an emblem with "Whenever a creature becomes tapped by a spell or ability you control, you may gain control of it." "Fear not! I can keep you entertainted for an eternity now, if you so desire."Song 'bounces' the tokens (acceptable loss of support characters, in Ringaling's opinion), leaving Maria unable to respond to Enfeeble due to no legal targets I believe. Regardless of whether she can sac in response or not she ends up as a creature and Ringaling stalls her out to gain a fine shrieking addition to his (currently nonexistent) merry zoo troupe of performers. Landwise I assume Ringaling either has ramped out to the point of mana not being a concern or is casting Song, deliberately taking a hit, and then following up with Enfeeble and himself in that order. The King should survive in this scenario if things play out correctly, but if not...well, Ringaling would rather the kingdom have a good show than a rusty king. That, or the jester can at least annoy the Queen to death so the King can get some real work done again.

Judging, finally. {ZephyrPhantom} The doors to the throne suddenly explode with bizarre, undirected gusts, singing of foul profanities and strange musiks unknown to the land.Song of the Drow God Sorcery Split second (As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t cast spells or activate abilities that aren’t mana abilities.)Return up to three target creatures your opponents control to their owners’ hands. Song of the Drow God: Seems to be at a good cost. Split Second is a very relevant line of text. Enfeeble the Haughty: I like this a lot. The lesser point of power often won’t be relevant, but the additional flexibility will be (like here, used to drop off an Aura). Ringaling, Jester of Acorns: Locking down a creature entirely is quite strong, especially when it culminates in you gaining control of the souped-up version. At the same time, breaking the lock by taking care of Ringaling leaves the opponent’s creature stronger by a few points. The minus synergizes well, obviously, but is also an interesting hoser versus counter-centric decks or decks that run X creatures (ex. when Walking Ballista was big). The ult reminds me of Dack, but with different synergies, including with Ringaling. Dealing with Maria: Nice interaction to prevent Maria sacrificing the King, and her joining the Jester’s troupe is an amusing image. The only complaint is that taking a hit wouldn’t work due to Dravin’s ability, but it’s fine to just cast them all in one turn. {viriss} That’s one way of resolving the conflict. I’d say this feels much more WB (or even mono-W) than WU, considering this can hit a variety of card types (including planeswalkers). The cost may be a little high, but considering the versatility, 4 is probably a good spot. Dealing with Maria: It sure does. The flavor is unique also. {Yoshi} The skies darken, and a flurry of assorted flora and fauna part to make room for a shadow that descends from the sky. The soldiers flee in fear, never to be seen again.Dramatic Entrance Sorcery As an additional cost to cast CARDNAME, reveal a creature or planeswalker from your hand. Kicker Return each creature with converted mana cost less than the revealed card's converted mana cost to its owner's hand. Then if CARDNAME was kicked, put that card on the battlefield. An unceremonious, scrawny dwarf descends from the sky. He twirls his hammer in fashionable manner, his wrist somehow not breaking. He then slams it down on the ground in dramatic fashion, sending the ground into shuddering, undulating tremors. He flashes a grin and winks, unaware of the fact that he's sent the king who needed his help flying. "What do you need?"Lorenoz, the Leaden Hammer Legendary Creature - Dwarf Warrior Hexproof, trample When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, return target permanent to its owner's hand. CARDNAME can't attack or block unless its controller pays . 6/5 Dramatic Entrance: TIL that Displacement Wave is the only CMC-based bouncer. This looks to be at a good cost, especially since it requires another card in hand that aligns with the creatures to be bounced. The Show and Tell effect gives it an additional use lategame. I could also see this with a U cost and G kicker, though the multicolored version works as well. Lorenoz, the Leaden Hammer: Neat GU dwarf. Provides tempo value on etb but the body itself is quite large and needs an equally hefty cost. I may be underrating the card but a four-mana (sorcery speed) bounce spell with potential lategame relevance will be awkward in a lot of matches, especially since Lorenoz can still die in combat after you invest mana into animating him (5 is a lot but not invincible). Getting a mini Carnage Tyrant is appealing, though. Dealing with Maria: A straightforward interpretation of freeing. Bouncing Dravin knocks Maria into being a creature, where although she exists on the battlefield, she is no longer enchanting the King. Leaving the malicious specter around is a bit of a risky move, especially since Assemble the Kingsguard and Maria’s deathtouch can kill Lorenoz during combat. {mrlozano} "This will not be the first ghost king I kill..." -Kaya, KingslayerKaya, Kingslayer Legendary Planeswalker – Kaya : Exile target permanent, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control. : You draw a card and target opponent discards a card. : Exile target creature and all permanents attached to it. "I just want to get rid of the spirit, no one pays me for the king. GET OUT!"Kaya's Ultimatum Legendary Sorcery (You may cast a legendary sorcery only if you control a legendary creature or planeswalker.) You may pay rather than pay CARDNAME's mana cost if it targets a permanent that enterd the battlefieldthis turn. Exile target permanent. So, Kaya has two options. She can flicker the Queen and free the king, then remove her from existence and get everyone a happy ending. However, if things go wrong, the poor King will fade into nowhere whits his "loving" Queen. Kaya, Kingslayer: Nice character to bring in. The 0 being straight blink is a little odd, especially how it can reset walkers (including Kaya) and kill Auras. I like the callback of the -1, but keeping it as -2 would probably be best especially since it can reset itself. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be using the -1, since the combination of the -4 and 0 makes Kaya repeatable removal with upside, since you can blink and -4 in the same turn. Kaya’s Ultimatum: Could comfortably be 4 CMC or even 3 CMC since this is Vindicate with the Legendary restriction. Casting for free is interesting- it hates on flash and provides value for your blink effects. Dealing with Maria: The blink into Ultimatum combo efficiently dispatches the spirit, and the -4 is a nice backup (with, as you mentioned, a casualty). The final standings... {Winner} The winner is ZephyrPhantom! Yoshi is the runnerup. Thanks all for the good entries!

Thanks for the win. Here's the next challenge based on a rather peculiar prompt I thought of the other day - see if you can figure out what it was: As you advance into the dungeon, something is amiss. The items in the rooms, the number of etchings on each wall, the whispers in your mind all lead to one figure. Inflection of Visions Instant Counter target spell unless its controller pays . If you control at least two permanents with converted mana costs equal to 2 or 7, instead counter target spell unless its controller pays Its embrace is not one of demonic allure or holy sermons. All you need to know is of its unending love. Warped Worshippers Creature - Horror Cleric Flash At the beginning of each upkeep, you may create a token that's a copy of of target permanent with converted mana cost 1, 2, or 7, or 14. 7/7 It belches beguilements born of beloved beatings and burning benedictions. Why reject its unerring, impeccable proclamations? Many have tried before. Many now chant its name and speak of being free. Talisman of Truths Artifact ~ enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a permanent with converted mana cost 2 or 7. : Add or . Free from the burdens of sanity and empathy, with so much they can do by giving their blood to the strong, or letting the strong make them bleed. Gibbering Neonate Creature - Elf Cleric Flash Sacrifice ~: Permanents you control gain hexproof and indestructible until end of turn. 1/1 You believe it too, don't you? You must merely accept its word and ascend beyond the limits of your mind. Effigy of the Unspoken One Artifact Creature - Construct Horror Trample ~ costs less to cast if you control a permanent with converted mana cost 1. The same is true for converted mana costs 2,7, and 14. 7/7 Read backwards, the confiscated scriptures speak of a lost war and a grieving survivor.Filtriss, The Last Errathonoi Legendary Creature - Elder Horror ~ costs less to cast if you control exactly thirteen permanents. As long as you control another nonland permanent with the corresponding converted mana cost, Filtress has the corresponding ability: 1: Protection from planeswalkers 2: Protection from creatures 7: Protection from instants and sorceries 14: Protection from everything 14/14 Of a race lost to unspoken horrors, of a remainder with only one mindset: to rebuild.Notes: Filtriss has 1x Gibbering Neonate, 1x Warped Worshippers, 1x Effigy of the Unspoken One, 1x Talisman of Truths, and itself in play. Assume there's been a lot of back and forth going on this game and both sides have taken heavy losses: your current life total is 7, though the rest of your game state can be as flexible as you want it to be. Both sides have ramped out enough for spellslinging of this many cards (though I suppose you might expect that with a CMC of 14...) Due to either your or someone else's previous shenanigans at the table, you know Filtriss's 'player' has three cards in hand: 1x Inflection of Visions, 1x Gibbering Neonate, 1x Warped Worshipers. Their main interest is keeping Filtriss alive so that they can swing for 14 unblockable damage as much as possible and KO everyone out of the game. You may (optionally) assume that this is a multiplayer EDH game, but if you do, everyone that isn't you or the Filtriss player has one legendary creature at most in play or has only varying lands. This challenge is meant to have multiple avenues to being solved, some approaches favoring flavor and some approaches favoring mechanics. Be creative and good luck!

So I honestly forgot this game existed, whoops. If anyone else wants to take a shot at the current challenge, I'll give it a week or two and see how things go from there.

Well, I feel like I've given this round more than enough time to run its course. dangerousdice If you want to take a shot at making a new round, it's all yours. Otherwise, I'm willing to let this rest unless someone else wants to start it anew.
