Originally invented by loopsorspool , and brought back for those of you who have cool set ideas but don't want to a dedicate an entire set development to them. The guidelines are as follows: Feel free to post any time you want, think of this as like the mini-mini-set brother of the Misc Card Design thread, but for more focused prototypes. To start things off, here's a set I made in the original thread featuring a Planeswalker exploring the plane of Segovia. - this is based on Marshmallow's Segovia set, where all numerical magic standards are cut in half. Unlike that set, though, I've tried to make the cards in question work in the context of the larger multiverse, as one might notice with a particular Blue card. Wind-Up Charger Artifact Creature - Penguin When ~ attacks, it gets +1/+0 until end of turn. 0/½ "The last Owstoni war somehow managed to wipe out every single penguin in the Belfusian kingdom. It was considered a national tragedy, so naturally artificers decided to capitalize on it." - AnimaraPower of Heart Instant Target creature gets +½/+0 and lifelink until end of turn. Even the faintest heart on another plane can become the strongest pulse of life on Segovia.Owstoni Shanker Creature - Goblin ~ attacks each turn if able. 1½/½ Mischievous Whispers Sorcery Draw a card. If you only spent mana from Islets to cast ~, draw an additional card. "The first thing every Planeswalker new to Segovia learns is humility; your physique may be scaled down, but the mana requirements for your spells are not." - AnimaraUmisi Crab Creature - Crab Hexproof Whenever ~ blocks a creature, you may pay . If you do, ~ gets +0/+2 until end of turn and you draw a card. 0/2 Deathslice Sorecry Destroy target creature with a half mana symbol in its mana cost. Light Square Artifact :Add . Khebler Tusker Creature - Beast 3/3 "An average beast in Kalonia, an apex predator in Segovia." - AnimaraGlitterspite Demon Creature - Demon Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, you may pay . If you do, target player loses 1 life. 2/2 Animara, Shadow Chronicler Planeswalker :Each player draws a card and loses 1 life. :Each player discards a card. :Each creature you don't control gets -½/-½ until end of turn.

Not enough cards for true symmetry, though I suppose that's sort of the point. Can only keep it small if you ignore that, right? 2 cards at every rarity (except mythic) for every color is... 30 cards?

If you want to go for higher numbers of cards by all means go ahead, just keep in mind the idea is for "short and sweet" or WIP groups of cards that aren't quite yet a full set (But could represent one).

Tossing in an attempt of my own, here's Garden Lands, set on a plane with flavor too specific to make or art a full-sized set. An emergent rebel group leads the stewards of a plane of countless interlocking gardens to take drastic measures to protect the sacred symmetries of the land. {Spoiler} Moon Lily Haze Instant Target player puts the top X cards of their library into their graveyard, where X is twice your glow. (Each enchanted permanent you control counts towards your glow.)At the Battle of Welkin Wood, kithkin locals defended their home by boiling moon lily extract into a hallucinogenic vapor.Wildroot Subversion Sorcery Put two -1/-1 counters on target creature. You gain 2 life. "On the bright side, at least we won't want for fertilizer." - Jeret, junior wardenMeltwater Sage Creature - Human Shaman When Meltwater Sage enters the battlefield, exile the top two cards of your library. You may play one of them this turn. The steam that rises in coils from the hot springs at Meltwater brings clarity to those who know how to capture it.2/1Earthen Resolve Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature When Earthen Resolve enters the battlefield, you may destroy target artifact or enchantment. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample. Corona Brand Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature Enchanted creature has first strike. : Each creature you control that's enchanted gets +1/+0 until end of turn. Highgarden pyromancers' flames don't burn wood. Flesh is a different matter.Giltgarden Skywatch Creature - Faerie Soldier Flying, hexproof Giltgarden Skywatch's power is equal to your glow. (Each enchanted permanent you control counts towards your glow.)The skywatch were deployed all over the Garden Lands, but the oldest, hardiest brigade stayed to protect Giltgarden.Trench Shovel Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and has vigilance. Whenever equipped creature blocks, other creatures you control get +0/+1 until end of turn. Equip Hiwel, Wildroot Dissident Legendary Creature - Elf Rogue Vigilance Wither (This deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.), : Hiwel, Wildroot Dissident deals 1 damage to target creature or player. Deadwood PalaceLand : Add . : Add . Activate this ability only if Deadwood Palace is enchanted. The Stewardry hastily reclaimed and refurbished holdings that had been out of use for centuries in the hope of denying them to the Wildroots.High Steward's Mandate Sorcery Choose target permanent you control. Destroy each nonland permanent with fewer Auras attached to it than the chosen permanent. In the end, Oin forsook an ocean of beautiful chaos for a thimbleful of perfection.

shiftyhomunculus - I'm mildly disappointed there aren't any Rebels, they seem like a perfect fit for the theme and reinforcing the board with things to enchant. Hiwel's missing P/T, btw, as is Giltgarden Skywatch. Meltwater Sage and High Steward's Mandate are pretty neat designs. Tesagk Interesting that cards like Ritual Stone and Ruiiwent Cult Hideout forces you out of White; I could see that causing some interesting swerves in a draft when someone's forced to pass up a powerful card simply because they've committed too far to one color. Throw Overboard has some pretty neat flavor, though I think it's "under the sea". What exactly makes The River Suoin Green? Branches of Eternal Autumn adding Red and then having a rather White effect below it seems a bit jarring as well.

That said, it's the first time I've really even tried to venture into color shifting, so I'm not surprised if I've stumbled a bit.

I'm curious to hear your rationale for the River Suoin shift, both flavorfully and mechanically. The trigger condition is conventionally blue or red and the actual payoff is solidly black - how do you justify putting that into green? This isn't meant to be accusatory, I'd just like to know what your reasoning is.
Viking as a creature type is a weird one, too, especially when it replaces Human. Are Vikings actually a different species in this world?

All of the cards are color-shifted in one way or another.

Really? Fresh Fruit's last mode and maybe Branches of Eternal Autumn are the only examples I can see; everything else looks perfectly on-color to me.

Really? Fresh Fruit's last mode and maybe Branches of Eternal Autumn are the only examples I can see; everything else looks perfectly on-color to me. Ritual Stone: borrows a trigger that is traditionally blue/red (playing an instant or sorcery) Color: White; Color-flavor: Red or Blue Voi, Priest Eternal: white tends to care more about enchantments than artifacts, whereas green usually cares about both. However, Voi is pretty white. Color: White; Color-flavor: Green-White Throw Overboard: Red usually discards cards in synergy to cast spells, not blue. When blue discards a card, it's usually in response to a draw. Color: Blue; Color-flavor: Blue-Red Viking Windchaser: Pretty straight-up blue, but Raid is not a typical blue mechanic. There 6 introduced in Ixalan, which are pretty much the only ones. Color: Blue; Color-flavor: Blue. * Raid is not often seen on blue. Ruiiwent Cult Hideout: Black does care about dying, but it tends to use dying to hurt other players, or bringing things back as undead. Life counters are just straight-up creature return, which is more green/white. Color: Black; Color-flavor: Green/White OR Black Sloke, the Gray Owl: I need a better subtype for him, granted. Black usually goes more for destroy than exile. That being said, it's not entirely uncommon in Black, so he's more Black-ish. Color: Black; Color-flavor: Black/White Iluya War Party Leader: Red usually gets +X/+0 not +X/+X. Color: Red; Color-flavor: White OR Green Fresh Fruit: Very clearly color shifted with the last choice. The River Suoin: Again, green usually doesn't care about instants or sorceries, and there aren't many, if any, green cards that give -X/-X effects. Color: Green; Color-flavor: Blue OR Black Branches of Eternal Autumn: Very clearly color-shifted with the last ability

also ruiiwent hideout doesn't work with -X/-X, contrary to what "would die" implies: the life counter is removed and then the creature, having <=0 toughness, dies because of SBA anyway

Making some major changes to my micro set.

Post by Fleur on Aug 16, 2018 3:13:18 GMT
today in Lily's microset experiments: mono-blue ramp: For monoblue, I knew I wanted to make blue a strange mockery of green. To do this, I'm drawing on a mix of less-tread blue effects (such as untapping permanents but focusing on lands and colorless ramp) and shifting some other stuff. Some of the stuff I shifted includes more counter manipulation (which blue dabbled in in Simic) and use of a larger range of evasion abilities on their fatties. It'll make more sense when you see it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. Ocean Byrd Creature - Bird Flying : Untap target land. They search for the ideal nesting grounds - flooded, slightly cool and preferably not green.
1/1 Harbinger of Ego Creature - Human Vanity - When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, draw a card if you control a creature with converted mana cost 5 or greater. 1/5 Notes: While blue doesn't really care about size usually, Scornful Egoist provides a sort of precedent or springboard for this type of caring about things. I sort of like it, actually. Mana Spill Instant Counter target spell unless its controller pays . Remnant 1 (At the beginning of your next upkeep, add . Until end of turn, that mana doesn't empty as steps and phases end.)
Tidal Skimmer Creature - Serpent Hydra Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.) "Let's go under the sea!" -Telam, last words
5/4 Tidebringer Creature - Naga Druid : Add . Spend this mana only to cast a spell with converted mana cost 5 or greater. "Power comes in floods, not drops."
0/3 Induce Reverence Instant Creatures you don't control get -2/-0 until end of turn. Vanity - Those creature get -5/-0 until end of turn instead if you control a creature with converted mana cost 5 or greater. Sea Realm Invoker Creature - Merfolk When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, reveal the top four cards of your library. Put all lands revealed this way in your hand and the rest of those cards in your graveyard. 0/4 Blessing of Tides Enchantment When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, distribute X +1/+1 counters among any number of creatures you control. Creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them have flying. His Benevolence Sorcery Draw two cards. Vanity - At the beginning of your upkeep, if CARDNAME is in your graveyard and you control a creature with converted mana cost 5 or greater, target creature gains flying and "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card." until end of turn. Passage of Ki'Roa Sorcery CARDNAME can't be countered. Take an extra turn after this one. During that turn, spells you cast can't be countered. Remnant 3 (At the beginning of your next upkeep, add . Until end of turn, that mana doesn't empty as steps and phases end.) Note: Remnant riffs a little on suspend in that you use time as a resource (lose efficiency now for more efficiency later)

I can see Blue going big working given its typical affinity for big creatures. Vanity seems like it'd play well with Morph, too. Tidebringer feels like the biggest bend but I think it works in the context of the set.

Not a fan of <type> Spell. We already have a mechanic that says "Hey, maybe you should only play Blue?" - the colors themselves. (In fact, good design in any similar card game is the difference between Magic and Yugioh, where the latter was pretty much "Run all the best cards" until almost every recent card became a tribal one.) I think trying to force them even hard is overkill when forcing a card to cost more of a specific color of mana will often result in the same effect. An excellent example of making colors matter can be found in War Party Leader IMHO. I'd like to see more of that. (If you want to expand the set more on this thread, you're welcome to.) Checking by types also makes mechanics like these Parasitic, I.e. they may not function as intended (balance wise or otherwise) when played outside of their set. Personally preferred the color-hosing versions of Holy Ground and Unholy Ground when they weren't keywords, in other words. Is the colorshift still supposed to be present? If yes, is Blue meant to be more aggressive? I feel like Ritual Stone's lifegain should be better to make a player feel less bad about losing it. Maybe 4 life? Voil, Sloke, and Windchaser all look pretty interesting. Still not really feeling Branches tbh - I suspect being able to turn every card in your hand into Simian Spirit Guide may be asking for trouble.

Personally preferred the color-hosing versions of Holy Ground and Unholy Ground when they weren't keywords, in other words. I agree, it was a thought I'd had when I changed the design concept a little. But I figured I'd give it a shot to see how others felt. Is the colorshift still supposed to be present? If yes, is Blue meant to be more aggressive? No, but I did keep Raid on blue. In a way, all of the colors are meant to be sort of aggressive, given the Norse-style vibe that I hope it has. I feel like Ritual Stone's lifegain should be better to make a player feel less bad about losing it. Maybe 4 life? I feel like I had it at 4 life at one point. Knowing lifegain isn't considered a top mechanic, I'd honestly considered bumping it up, but I was worried that it would be too good at common. Still not really feeling Branches tbh - I suspect being able to turn every card in your hand into Simian Spirit Guide may be asking for trouble. Yeah. It's supposed to have an "eternal" feel to it, but I'm not sure it's getting that.

Here's my micro-set, or rather a small slice of a set I have in the works. Crestenhold is a steampunk Victorian Britain-inspired set, based off media like Dishonored, Thief, and Black Butler.
Crestenhold Take What's Rightfully Yours
Crestenhold is a world that has emerged from centuries of darkness into the Steel Age: an industrial revolution, fueled by the mysterious substance called "bioleum". Ruthless inventor-barons have risen to power, contesting the old, decadent nobility who maintain their power through blood and wealth-- with the "blood" being quite literal, thanks to their vampiric rites. Meanwhile, the masses live in squalor as they did before the Steel Age, save that they live in cities now instead of hovels out in the forest. Unfortunately, though the things of the darkness have grown weaker, they have moved into the cities, particularly the accursed neighborhood of Wyndmoor Street. And in the slums, a mysterious killer is hunting down those who bear the blood of the Lord Regent... Bloodmarked Baroness Creature-- Vampire Noble Soldier Flying CARDNAME enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it if it has two or more kindred. (A creature’s kindred is equal to the number of other creatures you control that share one or more types with it.)3/3 Wyndmoor Roofrunner Creature-- Human Rogue Whenever you cycle or discard a card, Wyndmoor Roofrunner gets +1/+0 until end of turn and can’t be blocked this turn. “No one ever pays attention to the little people. That’s why they get things done.” —Lauchlan Corvix
1/3 Demand Satisfaction Instant Target creature you control fights target creature you don’t control. (Each deals damage equal to its power to the other.)Draw a card. The idea of dueling to resolve conflicts is mostly a relic of the past in Crestenhold.Knife in the Dark Instant Destroy target creature. Knife in the Dark deals 2 damage to that creature’s controller. Ten years ago, Wyndmoor Street became the hunting grounds of the “Kingsblood Killer”, a vicious criminal said to target those connected to the Lord Regent’s many illegitimate children.Call in the Clankers Sorcery Choose one— • Create two 1/1 colorless Servo creature tokens. • Automate 2. (Put two +1/+1 counters on target artifact you control. If it’s not a creature or a Vehicle, it becomes a 0/0 Construct artifact creature with haste.)Explosive Apparatus Artifact , , Sacrifice Explosive Apparatus: It deals 2 damage to any target. "Anyone with access to the parts and the know-how to build one can turn things very bad very fast." -- Kellian Morek, constableStreet Wraith Creature- Wraith Swampwalk (This creature can’t be blocked as long as defending player controls a Swamp.)Cycling—Pay 2 life. (Pay 2 life, Discard this card: Draw a card.)The lamps on Wyndmoor Street snuff themselves at midnight and refuse to relight, afraid to illuminate what lies in the darkness.3/4 Unrest in the Narrows Instant Up to three target creatures can’t block this turn. Cycling ( , Discard this card: Draw a card.) When you cycle Unrest in the Narrows, target creature can’t block this turn. Highborn Adept Creature-- Human Noble Wizard Flash When Highborn Adept enters the battlefield, counter target spell with converted mana cost X or less, where X is Highborn Adept’s kindred. (A creature’s kindred is equal to the number of other creatures you control that share one or more types with it.)2/2 Ira Vesterly, Tinker Magnate Legendary Creature-- Human Artificer Whenever another creature you control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Ira Vesterly, Tinker Magnate. , , Sacrifice another nonartifact creature: Automate X, where X is Ira Vesterly’s power. (Put X +1/+1 counters on target artifact you control. If it’s not a creature or a Vehicle, it becomes a 0/0 Construct artifact creature with haste.)A one-man industrial revolution is rarely concerned with the civilities that lesser men uphold.2/2 Revelry's End Sorcery Destroy all nonartifact creatures. Each player loses 1 life for each creature destroyed this way. “No one goes to Marquis Fortescue’s estate any more, not since the red sickness came to visit. And I wouldn’t go there myself— no, not even for all the gold in the world.”—Old Marley Drocell, town gossip of DellamyreDismal Slums
Land-- Plains Swamp (: Add or .)Dismal Slums enters the battlefield tapped. Cycling (, Discard this card: Draw a card.)Where the buildings are packed so tightly, they squeeze out all joy and hope from those who live there.Lauchlan Corvix, Rogue Agent Legendary Planeswalker-- Lauchlan : Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn and can’t block this turn. : Create a 1/1 blue and black Rogue creature token with “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.” : You get an emblem with “At the beginning of each upkeep, reveal the top card of your library and put it into your hand. Each opponent loses X life, where X is the revealed card’s converted mana cost.”
Planeswalker Bio Lauchlan Corvix AGE: 22 SPECIES: Human BIO: Born in Wyndmoor Street, Lauchlan grew up knowing a life of grinding poverty, danger, and crime. His mother, Joyeuse Corvix, bore a grudge against Lauchlan's unknown father, speaking to anyone who would listen about how much of a vile piece of shit he was. Between earning money as a prostitute and proofing her shack against the horrors of Wyndmoor, she would guide her son towards channeling his natural aptitude for stealth into thievery. By the time he was 7, Lauchlan had become quite the thief. When he was 11, Lauchlan's attempt at stealing a jeweled gauntlet got him in trouble with the private security force of the tinker baron Ira Vesterly, causing his spark to ignite. Two years later, upon returning to Crestenhold, Lauchlan would discover that the serial murderer called "The Kingsblood Killer" had slaughtered his mother. In the struggle, however, she managed to tear a patch from the jacket the Killer wore. When Lauchlan examined the patch closely, he recognized the symbol on it: the crest of a noble family associated with the Regency. Soon afterwards, an organization called the Infinite Consortium recognized him as a Planeswalker, offering him shelter, food, a job, and-- most importantly-- revenge, if he joined. For the next nine years, Lauchlan used his skills to steal, run missives, and spy on people at the behest of the Consortium's leader, the Planeswalker Tezzeret. When Tezzeret vanished, Lauchlan remembered the seal he had seen on the scrap his mother clutched. He took leadership of Crestenhold's Consortium cell, reinventing it as a crime syndicate, and set about establishing a power base in Wyndmoor Street. Knowing that waging war on the noble families of Crestenhold was suicide, Lauchlan has since focused his energies on expanding the New Consortium beyond Wyndmoor and finding the Kingsblood Killer, as much to find out their identity and connection to himself as to avenge his mother. He suspects the death of his mother has something to do with the blood that runs in his veins...

Sad flavor! so your non-evergreen mechanics are the bottom of the library play and poison?

I'd like to return to the concept of a Sci Fi set eventually, so here's a micro set mockup of one. Naive Rookie from COTW 239 and Platinum Walker from Shift the Card could feasibly appear in this set. Themes: Ally colors are typical MTG races, Enemy colors are Aliens, Creatures matter, combat matters Hollow-Point Shot Sorcery Engage - If creature you control entered the battlefield this turn, you may cast ~ as if it had flash. ~ deals 3 damage to any target. Covert Hunter Creature - Elf Rogue Flash Engage - If a creature you control entered the battlefield this turn, ~ has deathtouch. 1/1 Officer's Authority Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 white Human Soldier creature token. Enchanted creature can't attack or block. "Watch the flanks!"Beyonder's Probe Artifact , sacrifice ~: Target player discards two cards. If that player has lost life this turn, draw a card. Thoughtscraper Creature - Alien Wizard , : You may tap or untap target creature. , , Sacrifice ~: Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste until end of turn. (It can attack and this turn.)1/1 Drone Insurgent Creature - Dwarf Artificer Engage - If a creature you control entered the battlefield this turn, Drones you control get +1/+0 and have haste. When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 colorless Drone artifact creature token. 2/2 Crush the Warpgate Instant Destroy target artifact or enchantment. If you destroyed an artifact this way, create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token. From rust, life.Battlemaster Alpha Creature - Alien Berserker Creatures with converted mana cost three or less have base power and toughness 6/1, haste, trample, and "At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice ~." 4/4 Docking PortLand ~ enters the battlefield tapped unless a creature you control entered the battlefield this turn. Add or . Dominate the Skies Sorcery For each creature you control, create a 4/4 colorless Vehicle artifact token named Cybersphere with flying, trample, and crew 1.

neat stuff overall but I have some Comments
- the power level variance here is kind of weird between Lightning Strike but worse and "destroy target attacking creature without flying" for G that also triggers a set mechanic - it's a cool reversal that the aliens here are associated with more "primal" fantasy-adjacent classes while the natives are more agnostic or scientific - just grind up battlemaster alpha into a paste and pour me a pint of that please and thank

Damn it! A reload cost me my post just as I was about to submit it. Let's see if I can reproduce it from memory... Let's see if you can figure out the stupid gimmick for this (never to be fleshed out) set! Blackened Banner - Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature has +2/+0. Discard a card: Equipped creature gets -2/-0 until end of turn. Only any opponent can activate this ability. Equip Consult the Archives - Sorcery Reveal the top three cards of your library, then you may put a land card revealed this way onto the battlefield. Then put the rest of those cards of the bottom of your library. Measured Response - Instant Until end of turn, target creature gets +0/+2 and gains first strike and lifelink. Up until recently, panicking and screaming only ever made things worse.Obsequious Servant - Creature - Satyr Advisor Exalted When Obsequious Servant enters the battlefield, if was spent to cast it, it gains haste until end of turn. Every day, he polishes his master's rapier until it shines.1/2 Honorable Duelist - Creature - Elf Soldier Exalted Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, you may have Honorable Duelist fight target creature defending player controls. 2/3 Magnate's Largesse - Enchantment At the beginning of your end step, draw a card if an opponent drew a card this turn, then each opponent discards a card if you discarded a card this turn. Reordered Thoughts - Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature When Reordered Thoughts enters the battlefield, untap target creature. If it was unchained, that creature gains haste until end of turn. You control enchanted creature. Unchain (You may cast this card for its unchain cost. If you do, sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.)
Enodie, Minister of Today - Legendary Creature - Angel Flying, lifelink Non-creature spells cost an additional "sacrifice a creature" to cast. "The past and future are entirely irrelevant to the matter at hand."4/4 Tamed WildsLand : Add . If you played a land this turn, add instead. "It has been centuries since we drove the forces of wicked Disorder from these lands. Now parkland and woodlands are one, as they should be." - Larat, Yesterday's Diaries Kirino, Tongue of Flame - Legendary Planeswalker - Kirino : Discard a card, draw a card, then put a loyalty counter on Kirino, Tongue of Flame for each card you've drawn this turn. : Kirino deals 2 damage to target permanent's controller. Return that permanent to its owner's hand. : You gain an emblem with "You choose the targets of the first spell each opponent casts each turn."

Let's see if you can figure out the stupid gimmick for this (never to be fleshed out) set! I like your demonstration of how Unchained works. It's a neat way to make spells have an alternate mode, like I could see a Dead Weight type enchantment that can be cast at instant speed for its unchained cost, or something similar. Your use of Exalted is really clever too. Not 100% sure where River of Tears cycle fits in here but seeing as many of the cards in this set have alternate multicolor things going on I can see where it fits in. Overall I think you did a great job of communicating the set's political flavor through all the draw/discard shenanigans, Exalted, and the like.
