On the old forums, voltaic-qui posted a particular community project: an MtG set was split into card pools and each participant redesigned the cards in their pool according to modern design standards, as well as with shifted rarities, resulting in a completely different set. After some interest was expressed in the Magic Set Editor Discord, I decided to post a thread here to see who'd be interested in doing something similar and how people would be interested in doing it. So:
- What set would you be interested in redesigning like this? - How would you be interested in the cards being redesigned? Along with the "shift each card's rarity" concept of the original, the idea of colorshifting each card also came up in the Discord.
ideas so far: - Shards of Alara, colorshifted (shard-->wedge)
- Homelands - Homelands (keeping flavour)
- Ice Age, colorshifted - Alliances, colorshifted - <something> Masters, rarityshifted
EDIT: The project's subject has been chosen, and it is already underway.
EDIT 2: Current portions of the project:

I definitely enjoy colorshifting, and as for the set I'm open to anything. I have a feeling a set like Alara could be fun (The shards becoming wedges) or something.

Homelands, keeping the flavor of the set.
Also Ice Age/Alliances could be pretty fun.

I'd be down for Colorshifted Ice Age/Alliances.

I'd be a fan of wedgeshifted Alara or rarity-flipped (something) Masters.

If we go with colourshifting cards we should probably establish some sort of standard (f.e. -> , -> , thus -> )
No particular preferences on which set to redo. If I had to pick one among those I think I'd go with Alliances, though. It's a pretty fascinating set, imo. You can see the disconnect between the designers who made it and those who made Ice Age before it.

Don't really have any set suggestions, but I'd definitely love to participate - this was so much fun

I'm super super into the idea of rarity shifted masters. I'd also be down to participate in Alara things. Not as interested in super old sets.

In order of priority my vote goes to: Wedgeshifted Alara Homelands

I'd love to participate. I feel like wedgeshifted alara isn't really necessary, but I'm down for whatever

I'd be down for either the Homelands redesign or Wedgeshifted Alara. I've been part of a wedge set project before on the old forums, so I guess I have some experience.

I'm fine with whatever. I'm not familiar with any of the sets listed, so it'll be a new and different experience for each of them.

This sounds like a great project, I'd love to be a part of it!
I am ambivalent toward which set to do.

I'd honestly rather do a straight up Homelands remake according to modern design standards - possibly as a shard set for reasons mentioned by Zuty . I personally like the idea of doing a Masters set rarityshifted b/c the mismatches in flavor, power level would be less obvious given that the source material is already a mashup of sorts.

Based on people's comments, I've made a decision: we're doing Homelands. I'm unsure of how to do it, though, given how the set has no rarities and all, and making a small set like that shard-focused feels like it could be awkward somehow.

That's a good point. It's also important to bring up the double art cards.
And if we go by the rarities listed on sites like Scryfall, the break down is: 71 common, 27 uncommon, 42 rare.
So this is gonna be tough, but I'm sure we will all figure something out. Maybe we'll need to vote and reassign card rarities based on what it was printed at?

Homelands is too irritating to figure out, so I'm changing this to rarityshifted Eternal Masters. Here's how it's gonna go down:
- Each participant receives a card pool composed of Eternal Masters cards. - Each participant redesigns their cards according to modern design sensibilities (use your own judgment there), shifting the rarity of each card in the following pattern: to either or , your choice; or to ; to . - In terms of deviating from the original card, this project is quite liberal; feel free to change card type, CMC, and everything else other than color identity, as long as the card still either mechanically or flavourfully has some connection to its original. - Each participant will compile their cards into a Magic Set Editor set file, which will be posted here. Alternatively, just post your cards in a forum post and I'll put them in the file myself; I'd prefer if you did the first, though.
- Art isn't optional, but reusing art from actual MTG cards is acceptable.
Everyone who's in, let me know so I know how many people to distribute the set between.

Imho Homelands could've been solved by just creating a blank skeleton that's roughly the same size and then doing a more freeform rarity or color shift.
That said I'm still interested.
