Thanks to Ty Cobb, I have a new favorite band! The Colbert Bump can sure lead to some weird-ass places…
Welcome back to Tosche Station. This week, as promised, we have a deck first built during the heady heydays of Time Spiral block!1 Take a look at Wurmcalling2:
Welp, that’s enough Dicking around in Tosche Station for now. Join us the next 2 weeks for No Reservations II, pt. 6 Fallen Empires, followed by more Tosche Station Dickery.
So, until then, thanks and praises to Editor-in-Chief Daij_Djan, and I’ll see you all devoured by Graboids!
Welcome back to Tosche Station. This week, as promised, we have a deck first built during the heady heydays of Time Spiral block!1 Take a look at Wurmcalling2:
12 Forest | |
Full Urzatron | |
1 Scryb Ranger | |
2 Spinneret Sliver | These are in here only for the reach, as this deck is a little soft to fliers. However, I have won games just buy casting one of these on turn 2.3 |
1 Strength in Numbers | For when you absolutely, positively, NEED to get in some trample damage for the win, but there’s probably better substitutes. |
2 Thallid Shell-Dweller | I absolutely love this card. It’s just so good at gumming up the ground. I should prolly go up to the full 4, but I just can’t be arsed, to tell the truth. |
1 Hunting Moa | My high school gym teacher taught me how to play, using a monogreen deck that had this card, and a B/r deck that had a bunch of cards from Mercadian Masques block. Actually, to call them decks is being rather generous, as they were both more like a couple random piles of cards with the appropriate number of lands added, then whittled down to 60. Those decks might have been terrible, but they sure did the trick.4 |
2 Search for Tomorrow | Because of this one card, I have been waiting over TEN YEARS for Wizards to finish out the complete card name cycle, so that I can finally build that Come Sail Away deck! |
1 Wood Elves | |
1 Wormwood Dryad | See No Reservations II, 5b The Dark for more Artemisia goodness. |
1 Yavimaya Dryad | I’m proud to have searched for a Forest for an opponent with this card a nonzero number of times. That tactic’s actually won me the game at least twice. |
3 Mwonvuli Acid-Moss | As much as I deride land destruction, I would be an utter fool not to recognize its necessity, especially since I run it in an Urzatron deck. That said, Mwonvuli Acid-Moss is one of the best LD spells ever printed, and should be the Gold Standard for how to do 4-mana LD spells properly. |
3 Penumbra Spider | I love all the penumbra creatures, as one of the first Magic products I ever bought was the Pandemonium deck, back when it first went on the market.5 I’ve seen soooo many kill spells wasted on a Spider, and it’s all the sweeter when it’s in season. |
4 Speak of the double! | |
1 Phantom Wurm | I also love the Phantom creatures, for a similar reason. |
1 Verdeloth the Ancient | You’re never casting this for just , and you’re never casting it before it’s in season. |
4 Caged Sun | Because there’s no such thing as “enough mana”. With one of these and a Season out, you could conceivably cast the deck’s namesake card multiple times with buyback and X=0 for an instant6 army of weenies. |
1 Karn Liberated | Yes, I opened this at the Neil Patrick Harris prerelease. Yes, I immediately put it into this deck as soon as I got it home. Yes, I know how evil it is in an Urzatron deck. No, I’m not taking it out, as it’s much more fair as a singleton in this deck than as a 4-of in actually tuned Tron decks. |
4 Wurmcalling | The ultimate variable card, aside from The Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast® Customer Service, Comet Storm, or Strength of the Tajuru. This card can be fiendishly difficult to keep track of irl (“Ok, which tokens are what?”), but online, it’s pretty easy. |
2 Molder | I have killed my own stuff with this in order to survive. It would’ve worked, too, if only I didn’t then draw a land. Wah wah wah! |

1 | Yeah, another one! |
2 | Modern-legal. |
3 | Your opponent immediately conceding is still a win, right? |
4 | Like getting hooked off your first, free taste of ultra-low quality bad brown heroin, then slowly but exponentially working your way up to the really good shit! |
5 | I may not be quite as “Old Man Magic” as Evan Erwin (#BackWhenTheRocksWereSoft), but I’m still pretty up there. |
6 | Well, sorcery. |
