Welcome to the Deckbuilders' Challenge originally created by sdfkjgh! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a deck along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of every two weeks, a winner will be determined by forum poll, and the winner decides the challenge for the next fortnight's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our hundred and eighth challenge! The winner of the “Random Colors“ poll was sdfkjgh with... |
(Modern/Historic)
|
And the challenge issued by our winner was... 1) Pick another forum member. 2) Scour their posts for card entries. 3) Build a deck using ONLY basic lands & cards that member has posted. (If they've posted lands, you may use those.)4) ? .? .? 5) PROFIT! Obviously let us know which member you've chosen and please provide links to the cards' original posts. Please provide a decklist using deckstats, tappedout or similar. Feel free to add some comments as they will be included in the final poll. Please provide a deck name as well as choose a card to represent your deck in the poll. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I'm going to be honest, I forgot I made that card but I'm actually quite happy to see it again. I've had more elaborate designs that are probably completely lost now but never had a real use. I was thinking of using one of Daij's sets but I think I'll focus on COTW entries instead, since he enters those pretty consistently.

DecklistPrimer{Spoiler} A decade-old throwback to Penada: Clash of the Tribes and Pyramids of Atuum made by Daij_Djan . Despite my previous post on one off designs, it turns out well-made sets have the advantage of being able to search a pool of cards quickly for interesting synergies. What was tricky about finding synergies between these two sets is that Daij didn't include any cheap self-discard or a lot of self-mill, forcing you to look for alternative means within the set's mechanics to quickly put creatures in the graveyard to get the most out of their mechanics. This deck is a control-combo deck focused made to showcase the power of Setheret, Awoken. Setheret is a powerful Planeswalker that can come down and immediately start removing threats to his rule, search for the exact card you need in any given situation, or prevent you from losing the game via life, so long as you can keep him alive. We are actually most interested in his last ability, as it allows us to power out the the aggressive combo of constantly duplicating a Blackleaf Shaman with Blurry Counterparts. Additionally, being a cheap Mirage creature means that we can play a Blurry Counterpart early as a removal spell so that it can be fuel for later Blackleaf Shamans. This is also why we run Njel Crocodile - while it may be normally be subpar removal, it serves a similar role as Blurry Counterpart as a 2-mana creature removal that we can play to stop aggressive threats and build towards our end goal. Rejected CardsFor those of you who play MSEM and are wondering "Why not Red with its large number of cheap Mirage creatures?" Because Setheret is and these two sets alone lack good duals. Life-Giving Waters is pretty much only run to help alleviate the pains of working with an all-basics manabase. For similar reasons, no Evermorphing Terrain as these would only slow us down. While it was tempting to also run Depraved Disciple, I decided against it and instead opted for Siros Persuader despite the painful manabase - we are just that badly in need of creatures that double as removal.* This is pretty much the only reason we run 1x copy of Dark Temple in the deck at all, to try and safely get rid of any stolen creatures - any more and I'd be a lot less certain about this deck's speed. *To put it in more recent Magic terms, we're essentially looking to play how the Flash Rogues archetype seen in Pioneer and Arena might've played had it debuted in 2000s-era Standard power levels. ? ? ?

Shouldn't Siros Persuader have flash?

Shouldn't Siros Persuader have flash? Unless Daij says otherwise, the keyword should override timing restrictions. (This is what lets you use Miracle on an opponent's turn in canon Magic and is the basis of Legacy Miracle decks.)

This was tough. ZephyrPhantom , you talk a lotta smack for someone who posts cards so infrequently! This is a somewhat interesting point to discuss tbh because A) it highlights the old forum (where most of my cards were, some good, many bad) is completely gone and B) I actually tend to not finish or post a lot of designs these days. I'm more interested in playtesting cards than designing them and as I've gotten older I tend to choose the former with what limited spare time I have.

Yeah, my previous image hoster shutting down a few months ago probably made this quite impossible..
This makes me wonder: As I've indeed saved all of those old designs, should I just dump them into a single archive post..?

I'm not sure how to say this, but.. That Setheret render is incorrect - its missing its fourth ability.. Setheret is supposed to be a lich and as such this first card iteration was heavily inspired by the Lich card, meaning it has a quite punishing downside mechanic to balance out the otherwise high power level..

I thought something was off but MSE insisted the render I got was what the card was supposed to look like. (It seems like older sets's Planeswalker cards in general don't get along with the current MSE build...) Could we consider this the first case of a DBC misprint? I'll see if I can make a new deck but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to do so.

Could we consider this the first case of a DBC misprint? That's what I'm gonna do
