Final Fantasy 7 Set / Mechanic Ideas
I've been thinking a while about the old final fantasy 7 game and how monsters, heroes and mechanics might fit into magic cards.
I'm a bit of a fan of the old game and it seems fun to print cards like that for commander or something to play with my daughter
The mechanics
Limit Break
Playable characters in the game have a limit gauge, which fills as the character angers as they are attacked by opponents.
Once it's full, the character can unleash a crazy attack that deals a lot of damage and sometimes does something else.
So I thought it would be nice to make legendary creatures with their limit break as a legendary sorcery on the other side as a Modal Double Face Card
One side has Limit Gauge <Number>
An ability that puts a limit counter on this creature each turn and limit the amount of such counters for that creature by <number>.
It also unlocks a free casting of the limit break back side of the card once the gauge is filled.
The other side has Limit Break
A legendary spell that can even be cast without waiting for the hero to fill their gauge.
Tifa Lockhart / Final Haven
Materia
Final fantasy 7 revolves around Materia, a crystallised source of power that produces magical effects.
While Materia is naturally occurring in the world, it is mostly manufactured artificially for military use.
My thoughts on Materia cards is a variation of the class mechanic, only changed slightly:
(Time Materia is almost like having - Haste, Slow and Stop spells in FF7)
Fanfare
Every time I hear this word I think of the victory music of all final fantasy games (especially FF1).
As this thing suggest, fanfare is an ability word that describe something that happens when you win in battle.
The trigger will be the end of turn for permanents and checking a condition for one time effects.
Perhaps fanfare could synergies with creatures with the Provoke keyword. (Whenever this creature attacks, you may have target creature defending player controls untap and block it if able.)
Or even with cards that create 1/1 blue Soldier creature tokens with defender and "This creature blocks each turn if able." to represent Shinra soldiers.
Cleanup step
In short... I really like final fantasy 7.

Tifa Lockhart / Final Haven
- Tifa is a character that is essentially a monk in final fantasy by punching and kicking. Having prowess seems fit as it was on Khans for other monks.
- Wanting to cast spells on her feels a bit as if she's doing tricks in battle.
- Her limit break combines all the tricks that she has learned.

(Template is a bit janky)

(Template is a bit janky)
- A Materia starts at level 0.
- Each activation is at sorcery speed, requires tapping and is a one time effect. (except for Mastery level which is continuous)
- I think it's neat to have different (but thematic) incremental abilities, just like the Materia in the game.
- The Mastery ability is a continuous effect so there would be a reason to leave the Materia on the battlefield and not to have it just be there without any effect.
(Time Materia is almost like having - Haste, Slow and Stop spells in FF7)

- Would very much appreciate any sort of feedback and/or ideas for other characters and mechanics.
- I didn't explore the Lifestream aspect of the game or the Memories theme. There must be a cool mechanic there.
- Also could explore the aspect of Mako energy and Nature vs Nurture theme of the game.
- There must be a cycle of WEAPON mythic creatures that devastate everything.
