Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our four-hundred and ninth challenge! The winner of the "First Time for Everything" poll was hydraheadhunter (left) and t2stonerain (right) with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Design a card based on a historical figure or a historical event, like they did for Portal: Three Kingdoms. Let's try and keep it to pre-WWI. A Wikipedia article to go along with each submission would be nice too (the reference will be included in the final poll. ~Daij_Djan). To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

The prompt says "Let's try and keep it to pre-WWI", but that isn't a hard and fast restriction, is it?
Walking Charisn'tma
Legendary Creature--Human Incarnation
Deathtouch for combat damage Aggressor (This creature must attack each combat if able.) If you would draw a card except the first one you draw in each of your draw steps, you skip that draw instead. Whenever Walking Charisn’tma attacks, it deals 1 damage to each creature, each player, and each planeswalker.
5/5

EDIT: New historical figure. Fittingly enough, he both is and is not pre-WWI:
Erwin Schrödinger Legendary Creature--Human Wizard Flash Erwin Schrödinger is both tapped and untapped at all times. 1/3
I wanted to have one of the Schrödinger equations as the flavor text, but MSE can't handle quantum mechanical notation. Also, he should prolly be in an Un- set, but I like the occasional brain-melter in regular Magic.

If I understand this card correctly, it esscentually reads pay one white, get two tap/untap triggers and an energy. That's a lot of power on a two drop.

Pretty sure it is, at least I took it this way which is why I "bolded" (is that the correct term? ) that part as well. Since t2stonerain 's post seems to confirm, I will treat the clause as such, sorry.
Considering she was the first person ever to make a longer drive with the vehicle, she qualifies more as a pilot, sorry

hydraheadhunter There are maybe a half-dozen cards that care about a creature (other than themselves) tapping and untapping, and most of them are not particularly good. He also does suffer from the problem that the 'inspired' mechanic had, in that he needs to already be tapped before you can use the activated ability. Lastly, I would mostly agree with you in any other circumstance, but given the nature of this week's challenge I'm heavily prioritizing the flavor and physics easter eggs over power level considerations.

Fair enough I suppose. Maybe powerful wasn't the right word. It just seems like the type of card that'd give R&D/The Rules Committee a headache five years down the road when it rises all but forgotten from the piles of draft chaf, awoken by whatever new game piece slots into it to fuels its unprecidented value engine, and I guess that's not actually important given the context of its existence.

The prompt says "Let's try and keep it to pre-WWI", but that isn't a hard and fast restriction, is it? Political stuff is exactly why I set the restriction to pre-WWI lol Politics have existed since the dawn of thinking apes, and if you wanted to avoid it you shouldn'ta picked history cause while I'll happily go on about how "everything is politics" to everyone that didn't ask, people tend to still disagree with me and my arguments after hearing them, I find "history is politics" a significantly less contraversial statement that people tend to at least agree that I have an sound argument even if they disagree with my premise. (Oh, and avoiding talking about politics just reenforces the status quo, which is why i refuse to shut up about politics.) Anyway, here's my entry for a pre-ww1 historical figure that's also explicitely political. We should conquest the bread and seize the means of production, etc.
| Silver (Pink) Boarder
Peter Kropotkin, Bread Santa A generic, a red, and a white
Legendary Creature — Human Anarchocommunist
Any player may activate any Food permanent’s principle ability. Whenever a creature becomes tapped, its controller creates a Food token. FT: “After bread has been secured leisure is the supreme aim.”
2/2
Art: Peter Kropotkin's Face shopped badly edited onto a santa clause laying out gifts which have been replaced by a spread of various breads. Art by: various artists. posted by u/ManThing772 (do let me know if you find an older version of the image and I'll update it; this is just one of those things that gets bounced around my political circles without regard to reposting or accrediation because memes are public property yeah.)
|
Anyway, This coulda easily been a black(purple) border card if I just used advisor as his class, and so on; but, I'm being pointedly political so silver(pink) it is.
The 'principle ability' of a type is the ability which predefined tokens like treasure, food, clues, blood, etc, come with. Which for food is "2 generic, tap, sacrifice this [permanent]: You gain 3 life." Not all permanents of a type will have its principle ability, and if they don't have the principle ability, it nautrally can't be activated. In case you want it here's the card with that in reminder text. | The above card, except the reminder text (The principle abilty of food is “2, T, sacrifice this permanent: You gain 3 life.” If a food permanent does not have this ability, it cannot be activated.) has been added and the flavor text has been removed.

Holy run-on sentence, batman!
Jokes aside, I think you should respect the spirit of the challenge. That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'll be respecting the letter of the challenge as I strongly disagree with the principles informing the spirit of the challenge. It's what I do. (And also I'm not a history buff, I've shit recall memory, and I'm some definition of busy, so picking myself a new interesting but 'apolitical' historical figure to research and design a card around isn't something I've got clean enough spoons to manage.)

If you don't agree with the premise/spirit of a challenge, don't submit anything. It's that simple. Nothing says you have to participate in CotW, and I imagine t2stonerain would rather fewer people participate than have them seek to undermine the challenge. (That being said, I tagged them so they can speak for themselves rather than me putting words in their mouth.)

Wow. All this debate sparked because I only have one card that's based on a historical figure, and I'm too lazy to create another! Also, "Let's try and keep it" to me sounds like a soft restriction.
Waitaminute! I DO have another historical card, it's just in another cardset! Will post in OP.

(That being said, I tagged them so they can speak for themselves rather than me putting words in their mouth.) I don't disagree with the premise. Pre-WWI history is a perfectly cromulent prompt yeah. I disagree wit the idea that history of any era can be apoliticized and I believe that that idea has some pretty nasty material consequences, and I'm therefore pushing back against that. There's also nothing says you have to abstain from a CotW just cause you disagree wit either, yeah; you just have to meet the brief for the entry to be considered (and as the other winner this week, if I'da gotten my prompt in faster, I'da happily welcomed checky entries from people who disagreed with it, not to put words in t2's mouth either, that's just my opinion): a thing which I've done. And, if folks don't like the card I submitted 'cause I'm being a bit cheeky by submitting a card outside the spirit of prompt, I'm perfectly used to getting no votes yeah? I'll have no hard feelings about it. Wow. All this debate sparked because I only have one card that's based on a historical figure, and I'm too lazy to create another! Trust me sdfkjgh, you didn't spark anything by yourself; I'm the one that struck the proverbial match, and I probably woulda picked a communist regardless seeings how I'm unappologetically a communist, and so we'da wound up having this conversation regardless, even if I weren't initially being so prickly about it.

I'm pretty sure "no politics" wasn't meant to exclude all political entries but rather meant as preventing any possible hurt feelings, discussions, and similar that often go hand in hand nowadays while dealing with current-days political stuff. Which is kind of ironic since it did kind of resulted in.. something anyway.

Wew lad, what a thread. Anyways, my entry: Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BenkeiSummary: Benkei used to be a rogue monk who fought samurais, taking their katanas as trophies. His 1000th would-be-victim was a young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who bested him. He swore to be Yoshitsune's servant after the fight. He went along Yoshitsune on his journeys and battles, and eventually died standing trying to protect his master in Koromogawa.
