From a design PoV, what's the best play-me-from-the-graveyard creature mechanic? Not spells that return creatures from the graveyard, but creatures that return themselves from the yard. Thanks for your opinion.

I like, Unearth, Undying, Persist, discard two cards to return it tapped, and the old 3 creature cards above it mechanic from Nether Shadow and Ashen Ghoul.

Just curious, is there anything tying these preferences together? Unearth, Undying, and Persist are I-come-back-once mechanics. 3-From-the-Top is a cooldown mechanic. (BtW would this mechanic still work? I've never ensured that graveyards remain in order...) And Discard-2-to-Raise lacks either restriction but is very costly.

There's no "best" mechanic of any kind. It all depends on the context the card's meant to operate in. I'm a fan of Undying and Persist, especially in sets with counter synergies. As for flashback/unearth/escape style mechanics, I've always been partial to the idea of putting Retrace on creatures, although I'd consider changing it to exile the land rather than just discard it to hinder some repetitive gameplay.
