Flo00 : Interesting how the common and uncommon parts of the cycle complement each other. I'm a little concerned that Vision of the Warper putting stuff into the graveyard might make it a little too advantage compared to Corpse Churn (especially since it can grab lands in addition to most artifacts/creatures the deck will run). Not sure if I'm a fan of how situational Call of the Titans is - you'll probably only run it in / decks where pseudo-draw spells exile stuff off the top that you won't use. I guess it also combats Oblivion Ring? I like the simplicity but worry it's a bit too simple for its own good. Kozilek - His ETB is a much much better than Kozilek, Butcher of Truth's for roughly the same cost. Not only is he drawing more cards, he is effectively the equivalent of playing Karn the Great Creator seven times over, i.e. you can tutor up all sorts of perfect sideboard hate like Tormod's Crypt and Pithing Needle whenever you want, so long as you can pay him. I think you underestimated the power of this effect by a lot, it should be 2-3 cards at most. 2nd effect makes sense and compliments the other cards, the 3rd fits the idea of him being a trickster and prevents him from dying to deathtouchers so easily, both seems like good choices. Overall good setup of designs in theory but it feels like you neglected balance a little bit. A little tweaking and review compared to existing cards would probably help. viriss : I like the combination of simple effects - Flash to put them in as a chump blocker and devotion to gain even more life after that. Feels like the Scholar should be "colorless creatures" to keep the cycle on theme and encourage running all of them - without it I think the card is a bit too easily reflavored as a or design. Otherwise I think is a good natural progression of colorless-matters cards with a payoff that doesn't feel like it's taking too much from a particular color. Set-ready as long as you make that slight tweak to the scholar. (Also, for what it's worth, I'm glad you didn't try and stretch this into a 4-card cycle. I feel like the scaling up of the lifegain is well placed between the three cards.) Daij_Djan : Interesting how you pushed very hard into Black's segment of the pie. I'm not sure how I feel about Ghastly Guard being better than Festering Mummy in almost every way minus the non-Spirit part - Festering Goblin tends to be the baseline ( Shambling Goblin, Grim Physician) so making a card like this at almost seems to be asking for a BFZ situation where the raw value of certain Colorless creatures was too pushed for the health of competitive formats. I would either drop Flying or make it just -1/-1 until EoT at least - probably the latter to keep the spirit (pun intended) of the cycle intact. Ghastly Warrior I think is the best example of what you were going for in this cycle overall. It's a very effect but it's got enough conditional hoops attached to it that I feel like I'm looking at something closer to Universal Solvent than " Murder in ". Ghastly Monarch feels like a good followup to the rest of this cycle that's difficult enough to trigger for the offensive effect while being a decent draft bomb on all of its own. A bit more flashier than Ghastly Warrior's simple design but I think it's still fairly good. Creative use of non-Spirit here. Overall I think your common is a bit too pushed (feels like you overestimated just how much "non-Spirit" weakens this card outside of its hypothetical Standard) to be healthy but otherwise set-ready. The dies trigger + non-Spirit stipulation makes it feel restrictive enough in most cases to not just be a bunch of cards and convincingly be its own archetype. ( Heartless Summoning could make for some interesting results, lol.) mosgon : I feel like given the nature of the submissions in general there's a bit of a joke we can make about being able to do everything, lol. I kind of wish Spiritual Guide returned colorless cards instead of creature cards even if I see the justification for it. Every color can usually dig for cards of a certain type from their graveyard, and "creature" makes this push a bit too much towards / in general for my liking. I think you underestimate just how powerful Spiritual Companion is - with a little bit of clever footwork, I can reanimate: Dragonlord Ojutai, Aurelia, the Warleader, Platinum Angel, Thought-Knot Seer, Verdurous Gearhulk, Zur, the Enchanter.... the list goes on, and I think it's a bit too broad when Wizards is nowadays even hesitant to print Zombify. You could make arguments for it not surpassing Goryo's Vengeance but it definitely pushes the limit of what I think would be an acceptable reanimator spell in Modern. I think I would at least make it target colorless creature cards only and even then it would have to be in a directly-to-Modern set at minimum. I'm pretty sure Charon doesn't work. "A creature or planeswalker “dies” if it is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. See rule 700.4.", so you can't regenerate it because it's already gone from the battlefield. You'd have to do something like the The Cauldron of Eternity and pay mana to put it back on the battlefield, which technically works but I feel is very klunky. Maybe creating Spirit creature tokens instead? For what it's worth I feel like I would've been more okay with a slightly less powerful Spiritual Companion if you'd explained that you expected it to be a high power card and perhaps scaled the other cards accordingly. Otherwise it's arguably even more powerful than Charon and that doesn't feel right without more context. Since there's only 4 entries I'll only announce a top 2. Interesting ideas from everyone though!

@ viriss: Go for it! I noticed my win a few days ago, but I was just too busy and didn't really have an idea for a new challenge..
@ ZephyrPhantom: Big thanks for the win! I actually really agree with your judging. Ghastly Warrior was in fact the card that started the entire cycle, which might be the reason it's kind of the best of the bunch. Then I came up with Ghastly Monarch because I have a soft spot for this effect - even though I know it's rarely really good - and then Ghastly Guard was fit into the cycle in the end. And yeah, it did feel overpowered for me as well - for some reason I never considered -1/-1 until EOT

Riley’s Armor Artifact - Equipment Equip abilities targeting equipped creature cost less to cast. Equip At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are five or more Equipment attached to equipped creature, transform Riley’s Armor and attach all Equipment you control to it. ---------- Riley’s Endurance Creature - Incarnation Haste Riley’s Endurance gets +1/+1 for each Equipment attached to it. Whenever Riley’s Endurance attacks, create a token that’s a copy of target Equipment attached to Riley’s Endurance and attach it to Riley’s Endurance. 2/2 Riley’s Sword Artifact - Equipment Whenever Riley’s Sword becomes attached to a creature, put a +1/+1 counter on equipped creature. Equip At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are five or more +1/+1 counters on Riley’s Sword, transform Riley’s Sword, then move all +1/+1 counters from all permanents onto it. ---------- Riley’s Resolve Creature - Incarnation Trample, haste As long as Riley’s Resolve has power 10 or more, it is indestructible. 0/0 Riley’s Shield Artifact - Equipment When Riley’s Shield becomes attached to a creature, untap that creature. Equipped creature gets +0/+3. Equip When equipped creature becomes tapped for the third time this turn, transform Riley’s Shield. ---------- Riley’s Malice Creature - Incarnation Haste Other creatures don’t untap during their controller’s untap steps. Each other creature has “ : Untap this creature. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on Riley’s Malice.” 5/5 Note that the equip trigger only work when you equip it to a new creature, i.e. you need to bounce it back and forth between two creatures.

I know the contest rules specify 3+ cards and this is stretching it, but frankly this challenge doesn't get enough love so I'll submit this anyway. Hallowed Spear Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gets +4/+0 and gains First Strike At the beginning of your end step, if you own and control an equipment named Frayed Brigandine equipped to equipped creature, sacrifice equipped creature, exile them and meld them into Faceless Avenger. Equip Frayed Brigandine Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gets +0/+4 and gains vigilance. Equip (Melds with Hallowed Spear)Faceless Avenger Legendary Creature - Spirit Warrior Flying, First Strike, Lifelink At the beginning of your end step, if a creature you control died this turn, untap ~ and it gains indestructible until your next end step. 4/4

Sorry I didn't judged this when I said i would, but honestly getting only 2 submissions was honestly pretty underwhelming, and while I love both I did expect more. But the show must go on as they say, so let's get to it Flo00 {"Rileys Cycle"}I like how each of your cards work on their own, yet "Armor" serves as an enabler for the other two which I find is a neat link between them. I do have some problems though. While they look fun to play with I find both "Endurance" and "Resolve" to be seemingly identical (with Endurance being objectively better in my opinion) and I would have liked them to have more fleshed out differences, maybe one could have benefited from having equipements attached to it while the other growing by the amount of equipped creatures you control, also I find "Sword"'s transformation weirdly worded. "Whenever Riley’s Sword becomes attached to a creature, put a +1/+1 counter on equipped creature." "At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are five or more +1/+1 counters on Riley’s Sword, transform Riley’s Sword, then move all +1/+1 counters from all permanents onto it." see, you're putting the counters on equipped creature, not on "Sword" so it will never transform on its own, I suggest this instead. "At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are five or more +1/+1 counters on equipped creature, transform Riley’s Sword, then move all +1/+1 counters from all permanents onto it." so you can either pump a creature full of counter by other means and forcefully transform it, or equipp it throughout your whole board to ensure lots of counters put onto it when transformed. Regarding Shield, while it requires a lot of mana and/or turns to pull it of, I find its transformed state NASTY... and I love that. SilentKobold {Faceless Avenger}unlike Flo00's cards, I find yours more... let's say, balanced but they lack that Wacky "overpowerness" Withengar has; to be fair it does feel like a pseudo rare considering it's an uncommon, which works for me. but when I really didn't like is that they don't transform, they meld, I know I know, They are both keywords from the same block and I found it clever for you to use Meld the first time I read your cards, but I did ask for transformable equipments and I think I should stick to that premise.
{"Winner"}It was tough to choose a winner, Flo00's cards are bombs but I find them overly convoluted. Kobold's ones feel more grounded but underwhelming in my opinion. Ultimately it came down to the Transform over Meld thing so I'll give it to Flo00 because of this. Congratulations and hopefully you can come up with another challenge for this thread and keep it alive.

I'll expand on my entry for the YMTC: Poor Man's Game. The general idea is to complete a cycle for based on the 'universal aura' mechanic of Zephyr Charge. Raider's Stockpile Enchantment : Until end of turn, whenever target creature deals damage, you gain that much life. "A wise general makes a point of foraging on the enemy. One cartload of the enemy's provisions is equivalent to twenty of one's own." — Sun Tzu, The Art of WarDesperate Tenacity Enchantment : Regenerate target creature. "On desperate ground, I would proclaim to my soldiers the hopelessness of saving their lives. For it is the soldier's disposition to offer an obstinate resistance when surrounded." — Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Fog of War Enchantment : Target creature gains first strike and haste until end of turn. "The general who is skilled in defense hides in the most secret recesses of the earth; he who is skilled in attack flashes forth from the topmost heights of heaven." — Sun Tzu, The Art of WarOverwhelming Force Enchantment : Target creature gains trample until end of turn. "In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns." — Sun Tzu, The Art of WarEDIT: Changed the flavour texts to Sun Tzu quotes to carry on another gimmick from Zepher Charge

Last call for entries. Judging somewhere within 24 hours.odivesco wins. EDIT: {odivesco}A loose two-color cycle spanning over three rarities were one is a hybrid? I guess that's what I get for asking for weird Aerial Defensive Formation: A good Ghostly Prison version for a flyer deck. A bit sad that it doesn't do anything when you would need it most - that is when you have no creatures. On the other hand it's probably pretty great for attacking with an army of flyers without having to worry about a counterattack. Torture the Mind: That's a strange curse. I guess it's supposed to be best in a mill deck, yet the first thing I thought after reading it is "Hey, I can curse myself with that!" So it's actually a kind of life gain with graveyard synergy. Even better when you got Nexus of Fate, old Eldrazi titans or similar effects. Rabid Infection: I like how you can choose to spread the infection by blocking the infected crreature. Brings interesting decisions into the game. Lavapit Arena: Do you know Contested Cliffs? It needs tribal and can be pretty nasty. I think Lavapit Arena should be . Aside from that, I really like it. Miraculous Aegis: That's a new and interesting kind of replacement effect. I like how it doesn't react to mass damage since that causes the game rules (and not an effect) to destroy the creatures. I'm sure this would raise some rules questions from a lot of people, but nothing too serious. {thaneofglamis}A set of hybrid shrines. I like that, since even in monocolor you can play two of them. And two enemy colors even give you access to all of them. I like all of them, especially the Altar of Unending Predation, since it makes a 0/0 with counters and not an X/X, which can give you additional synergy. I tried to find things similar to Altar of Jubilant Courage and came up with three cards: Kamahl, Heart of Krosa, Sight of the Scalelords and Squad Commander, which makes me believe this is rather material, which is strange for a shrine. {SilentKobold}Nice and simple. Not much to say here. Big respect for making the flavour texts. Raider's Stockpile is a bit odd in the context of the rest since it doesn't just grant lifelink and thus can be used on an opponent's creature to your advantage.
{viriss}Nice way of using the new copy tech to make new Volutes. I didn't even have to read them to know what they did, just looked for the type they where returning and reacting on. I'd love to see these in action.

Ok, so for the next challenge With Kaldheim right around the corner, and my love for mythology; I want you guys to create a cycle of god creatures from any pantheon other than the gods we've already seen in Theros and Amonkhet. It could be anything, design the Norse gods you think, or you'd want to see on Kaldheim, maybe Native american Spirit animals, Japanese Kamis, African deities, heck! even gods from non-antropological fiction maybe you can do lovecraftian Elder gods. I'll be judging for flavor, so I'd suggest adding a description of the gods you're basing your cycle on in order for me to see the "spice". Extra points if your design plays on the design template of Theros gods *Keywords* *Conditioned creature status* *Passive Ability* *Activated Ability*
Example: Quetzalli, Dawnfeathered God Legendary Creature - God Indestructible, flying Quetzali, Dawnfeathered God can’t attack of block unless you have 5 blood counters. Spells your opponents cast that targets any Creature or Enchantment you control costs more to cast for each blood counter you have. spend X blood: Return target Creature or Enchantment with converted mana cost X from your graveyard to the battlefield under your control. So this one's based on Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent), in Mexica Mythology he was tasked to retrieved the bones of humankind from Mictlan(Underworld) and make the new humans with them, He's similar to Helios in that they are gods of magic, music and arts, but that's difficult to convey mechanically speaking so I went with a protection ability as his passive ability, and made his active similar to his task to resurrect humanity. Also Mexica gods needs blood to live and to perform, so instead of devotion I'm limiting their actions based on "blood" counters. It may not be the greatest example but you sorta get the idea.

Well, this could be interesting - because I have no idea whether you'll let my entry count or not Long before there was Amonkhet and its pantheon, I created my own egypt-themed plane Atuum and designed a (quite successful) set around it: Pyramids of Atuum. Here are four of the gods featured in the set (using the color combinations they appeared in): Each of them tutors up an enchantment fitting its flavor, doubling its ability while the god remains on the battlefield while leaving a trace of itself behind even it it dies. (Fun fact: Heast of the Battle was indeed included in the set.) Also they each feature PoA's signature mechanic Mirage which is what let me come up with the tutoring concept in the first place (no reminder text as it's not required at mythic and the tutor ability is rather wordy by default ). They are technically not from Amonkhet even though I admit they obviously have a similar theme (even though are mechanically different). To be honest I completely missed your restriction when I came up with these cards - otherwise I might have pondered about a different pantheon - but now that I have designed them, I kind of want to use them even if they end up getting disqualified

@daij_Djan I love their design, they feel like the cards they reference are sort of miracles they can do, and while on the battlefield, they are the embodiment of said miracles. I also feel the mirage keyword give them flexibility, which is nice. Unfortunately, some of them do resemble Amonkhet gods we have previously seen, and though you might have come up with them before, I'd have to disqualify, but rest assure, they will get an honorable mention. Boy, I hope we get more gods!
