Welcome back to No Reservations! It’s open seating here, so pull up a chair, and enjoy the stupid. When last we left off, our tally was 27 cards are staying on The Reserved List, 11 cards should be reprinted for Standard (with Sedge Troll and Two-Headed Giant of Foriys both downgraded from to ), 5 cards should be reprinted in supplemental sets, 7 cards should be erased from existence, and 0 cards should’ve been put on The List, but weren’t for some reason. This gives us a BSQ of 23/50, or 46%. This week: Arabian Nights, with 22 cards. Let’s do this!
And that’s it for Arabian Nights! Our tally so far: 32 cards staying on The List, 20 cards reprinted in Standard (with Sedge Troll, Two-Headed Giant of Foriys, Elephant Graveyard, and Singing Tree downgraded from to ; Khabál Ghoul downgraded from to ; and Guardian Beast upgraded from to ), 9 cards reprinted in supplemental sets,11 cards Grandfather Paradoxed into oblivion, and 0 cards added to The List; giving us a BSQ of 55.55repeating%. Only two sets in, and we’re already more than half bullshit.
Next week will be a decklist column, then the week after that we’ll be back in the salt mines, with Antiquities’ 18 cards.
Until then, this is some guy, saying something or other, and thanking my Edtior, Daij_Djan.
Before we do, however, I should prolly preface this by saying that Arabian Nights has quite a few problems in regards to names and cultural inspirations. Back when the set was made, Islam in general, and radical extremist sects thereof, weren’t particularly in the forefront of the cultural zeitgeist (unless you worked in an international Intelligence bureau), so not as much cultural sensitivity was put into the effort as it should have been. At the very least, Prof. Dr. Garfield should’ve chosen placenames that didn’t have equivalents in our homeplane.
{Ali from Cairo}
Ali from Cairo see below

While this card is safe to reprint for Standard, it still has a few issues that may prevent this from happening. Chief among them is the fact that Cairo is a real place on our plane, which has the potential to cause some problems. However, if Cairo is also a location on Rabiah (this sort of thing has been known to happen in SF before; just look at Douglas Adams’ usage of Easter Island), then those problems might just be resolved with a return to Rabiah in Standard. Therefore, 6, unless a return to Rabiah, in which case, 12. Y’know what? I’m just gonna simplify things and say 12, but only if we return to Rabiah.

This is one of those times when the name isn’t the biggest problem. They could’ve called it Professor Wacky’s Super Happy Funtimeland, and it’d still be an absolute nightmare of an overpowered land, one that doesn’t actually do what lands are supposed to do. I’d be comfortable reprinting Magus of the Bazaar, but not its inspiration.

I’m glad this sort of effect has been move to Un-sets, as the actual, official templating required to make it work within the rules are just a little bit horrendous, with weird corner case exclusions/inclusions popping up every so often (like the Mountain that was the only basic land printed in the entire set). In Un-land, conversational language works just fine, rules-wise. For those of you who feel that this entire mechanic belongshere, don’t worry, I’ll get your back soon. By most accounts I’ve heard or read, Arabian Nights was actually a good set, which is why it escapes my ire.

Yes, it’s a land that doesn’t produce mana, but when you get right down to it, this is an effect that Wizards is so comfortable with, it essentially reprints it, or some variant, in almost every set. It’s nothing earth-shaking or game-breaking, just trading a creature for some life. The abuse is all in what creatures are sacrificed. We here at No Reservations believe in releasing the innocuous in favor of locking up the truly guilty parties.

Do me a favor. Go on Gatherer, and look up Drop of Honey. Then, in the same window, look up Porphyry Nodes. Now switch back and forth between them. Notice how the only thing that changes in the rules text is the names?1 Isn’t part of the promise of The Reserved List that they won’t even print functional reprints? Isn’t Porphyry Nodes a tacit admission by Wizards of The List’s bs-ery?

I love Time Spiral block, not the least for how much they skirted the line of actually reprinting Reserved List cards, thereby themselves implying that The List is bs. Yes, regeneration has been retired in favor of indestructible, but like Rowan Atkinson and Kim Basinger said, “Never say never.” Also, considering that there are currently only 50 Elephants in the game, and the fact that Masters Edition IV also did so, I’m comfortable downgrading Elephant Graveyard’s rarity

Island of Wak-Wak 6

Another land that doesn’t add mana. This one is just a little too narrow to reprint for Standard, where the skies are only crowded if something’s gone horribly wrong, like in original Innistrad (Lingering Souls was a mistake, and you all know it! If R&D needs to print a card specifically designed to correct the current metagame, then something’s gone horribly wrong!). In non-rotating constructed formats, however, there’s always going to be at least one player fielding an air force of some sort.
The manaless lands were an interesting experiment, but I’m glad it’s one Wizards has abandoned. I just wish they did so BEFORE printing Dark Depths!
I will say this, though: I’d be greatly disappointed if the reprint didn’t have as its art one of those trippy-ass Google deep-field images.

This is what I was talking about with the slight lack of cultural sensitivity. I should take this moment to point out that my username on MTGO is PatrickJihad. Does that make me a hypocrite? Yeah, a little bit. In my defense, the name is meant to spark debate about the etymology of the word, and people’s excess baggage they attach to it. As for the card itself, it has a few too many templating issues to be any good nowadays, since it grants the bonus to ALL white creatures, not just your own. This also leads to some weird things happening when you and an opponent are both playing white creatures, and you are forced to choose that opponent.2 We already have better things that grant your team, or a portion thereof, +2/+1. We can leave the meshuga controversial cards right where they are.

King Suleiman 7
Price
I hafta say, I struggled with where to put this for a good few minutes. There’s the whole cultural sensitivity issue, as Suleiman/Solomon is an important figure to three of our plane’s major religions, not to mention the quote from one of those religions’ holy book. Then there’s the issue of design. Since Legends wouldn’t come out for another two sets, the whole concept of Legendary Creatures hadn’t been conceived yet, and this is so obviously supposed to be Legendary. Finally, we come to playability. With 84 potential targets (63 Djinns and Efreets, 20 permanents with changeling, and this guy) currently in Magic, barring type-changing shenanigans, His Highness is just inside the realm of “playable, but fringe/mediocre”. Taking all those issues into consideration (especially that last one) led me to conclude that Elvis should most definitely leave the building, just not for a new tour of Standard.

My Original Recipe Bouncing Soldiers deck runs the dilapidated librarian, so I know just how powerful the carddraw is. You haven’t lived until you’ve activated one librarian to draw a card, then activated another one to draw another card in response. Yes, that actually works. However, since the Magus requires to cast it, meaning there’s exactly 0% chance, barring Vanguard weirdness, of using its carddraw before turn 3 at the earliest, then it’s fair.
Now, imagine getting Library out on turn 1. Yeah, Library’s broken, it stays right where it is.

It’s , not (and a pretty crappy at that), and even accounting for the early days’ 1 & 2 weirdness, I’m willing to bet that this was the higher-frequency 2. Even Adorned Pouncer, a card that, in a vacuum, has nothing to do with lifegain, and costs twice as much, is a better choice than Merchant Ship.
Shall we go over why the Ship is so bad? It’s a 0/2 for , so it’s already outclassed by 37Kraken Hatchling37Kraken Hatchling. It breaks the color pie by granting you lifegain, but only if it attacks and isn’t blocked, which gives the defending player all the control over that lifegain.3 And, to top it all off, it also has islandhome, because nothing screams “flavorful execution” like a drawback mechanic so bad, they actually got rid of its keyword!

Why, you may ask, did I put 42Pyramids42Pyramidshere and not here? Why indeed? Land destruction was plentiful back then, far, FAR too plentiful for the health of the game, and the majority of it cost 3 mana. Pyramids was supposed to protect lands from being destroyed, so WHY IN PURPHOROS’ NAME WOULD IT COST ?! AND, ON TOP OF THAT, YOU’D NEED TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL FOR EACH LAND YOU WANT TO SAVE! It could’ve cost to cast, and to activate, or even to activate; or I could’ve cost to cast, and to activate, but NOOO! THAT’S APPARENTLY TOO GOOD! WE CAN’T HAVE AN EASY WAY AROUND PREVENTING ONE PLAYER FROM EVER DOING ANYTHING, BECAUSE THAT WOULD JUST BE INTELLIGENT! LET’S JUST GO THE STUPID ROUTE, AND PRINT A METRIC FUCKTON OF OVERPOWERED LAND DESTRUCTION CARDS, IN EVERY COLOR! WHEEE! ISN’T THIS FUN, BEING GOLDFISHED AGAINST?!
I’m sorry I went a little overboard there. This List, its stupidity, and the stupidity of early Magic design is already getting to me. Let’s just move on.
