Howdy!
Some friends and I have created a vanilla-ish core set that is very, very loosely based on A/B/U, if it were brought to current-ish standards.
The four of us are all 93-94/oldschool players that were looking for something fun to draft and play in a relative vacuum.
We started by calling the set "Alpha Remastered," then "Alliteration," due to some of the wonky card names. For now, we've settled on "Afterward."
The set is 301 cards (319 with basic lands, Barry's Lands/Wastes exist in the set). Some reprints/functional reprints exist. Also, "look, ma, no planeswalkers!"
14 (2 per color, 3 artifacts, 1 land)
70 (10 per color, 10 artifacts, 10 lands)
97 (15 per color, 15 artifacts, 7 lands)
120 (20 per color, 20 artifacts)
The only non-evergreen keyword in the set is Ancient, which acts as an on-card restricted list.
We do have some egregious color pie bending, but we're okay with that. A/B/U had some fun, wacky stuff!
The only story tacked onto the set so far is that a group of pilgrims have fled some sort of magical cataclysmic event, brought on by a duel of powerful wizards that destroyed themselves (and a large portion of what was once a great kingdom).
Currently, we're looking for suggestions to improve
• The synergies in the set's archetypes
Control seems a bit strong, tokens seems a tad weak, enchantments seems a tad bland, blue and red need their own thing, etc.
• The balance and flavor of common-rarity creatures
We had no idea going in that would be an actual challenge.
• What we're calling the "functional-flavor" of the set as a whole
We might actually want to develop the story/setting, Two of us are graphic artists so if we go deep enough, we might end up doing non-stick-figure art if we have a strong enough framework.
If you're interested, you can take a look at the set file here.
